This newsletter is packed full of information this time around. We’ve got our 73rd Annual Conference coming up on October 28 & 29 at the Stoweflake Conference Center. After reviewing the evaluations returned from previous conferences, we have seen similar responses of the difficulty of attending conferences due to lack of coverage at the office and more technology workshops were wanted. The VT NEA Days no longer exist and those were the days we normally scheduled the conference on. So we thought we would try something new! With it being late October, we have all been busy for a couple of months (or more) and could use a relaxing break, right? Why not enjoy a nice evening at the Stoweflake….. dinner, meet friends, get a little pampered and experience a day filled with technology training. Exclusive details are inside this newsletter. I hope you will take this professional opportunity to the fullest. With the conclusion of this conference, it also marks the end of my term as President. I would highly encourage anyone to step up and become involved with the Association. Rather it is becoming a member on the board or being a part of a committee. This organization is the only group around that targets our profession, as far as working with schools and children. I know there are lots of great people out there with great ideas to share. A good business meeting is one where all the players show courtesy and respect. This approach conveys
a simple message: We’re all professionals here, so let’s have a productive meeting.
The topic of business meeting etiquette has no established rules on holding courteous meetings. So I’ve
gathered what I’ve learned from my own experience into the following commandments.
1. R.S.V.P. R.S.V.P. R.S.V.P. R.S.V.P. When asked via phone, email, or electronic calendar to attend a business meeting, be sure to reply if a reply is re-
quested. Some meetings are structured and spaces secured on the basis of expected attendance.
2. Come Prepared. Come Prepared. Come Prepared. Come Prepared. Always bring something to write on as well as to write with.
3. Abstain from Electronics. Abstain from Electronics. Abstain from Electronics. Abstain from Electronics. As the notice posted at the beginning of films in movie theaters requests, “Please silence cell

do not want to waste meeting time asking a question that has already been asked.

Meredith attended high school at Springfield High School in Springfield, VT. Throughout her high school career, she became involved in many different activities. She was the 2010 class treasurer all four years. During her junior year, she organized and participated in the first ever Powder Puff football game as a fundraiser for her class. Meredith was a member of the National Honor Society and treasurer of the National Technical Honor Society. She stayed active playing on the varsity field hockey all four years and was on the varsity softball team for three years. Outside of school, Meredith swam for the Tiger Sharks of Claremont, NH and danced on a com-petitive hip-hop dance team for Starz Dancers Studio in Newport, NH. She was also a dancer for The Dance Factory in Springfield, VT and participated in the annual production of “The Nutcracker Ballet,” which is a fundraiser for the Springfield High School drama pro-
gram. She also participated in the annual Apple Blossom Cotillion helping to raise money for scholarships.
Meredith is currently attending Wagner College in Staten Island, NY where she will be a sophomore. She is an accounting major and plan on getting her Bachelors degree of Science, then her Masters Degree the next year. Meredith also intends to sit for the Certified Public Accounting exam in the hopes to become a CPA. Her freshman year at Wagner went very well and finished both semesters on the Dean’s List, where students must achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher. She stays involved while at Wagner, has a work study job and is an active member of the Wagner College Field Hockey Club. In her sophomore year, she plans on getting even
more involved, possibly joining a sorority and the Wagner College Dance Club.

Commerce as a school to career organization and merger as the new non-profit in 2002.
Mr. Tulikangas is a leader in education and employment, always striving to serve the students of Ver-mont for over 30 years. He works with his staff to develop and implement a professional development plan. He is always available

The Professional Standards Program (PSP) is a voluntary program established by the National Associa-tion of Educational Office Professionals (NAEOP) to encourage educational office professionals to grow
professionally.
The program is designed as a series of five levels in Option I and nine levels in Option II. The awarding of a certificate based on education, experience, and professional activity recognizes each level of achievement in the program. The current highest-level certificate must be recertified five years from
issue date or upgraded according to the guidelines to be considered current by NAEOP.
A member who holds the Advanced III, Option I, or Associate Degree or higher under Option II is quali-
fied to apply for the distinction of Certified Educational Office Employee (CEOE).

1. Heat the oven to 325º. Grease a 9- by 13-inch baking pan and set it aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the first six ingredients for the squares. Add the oil,
pumpkin, and eggs, and whisk until the batter is evenly blended. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
3. Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 30 min-utes. Remove the pan and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack, about 1 1/2 hours.
4. Just before serving the cake squares, make the cider caramel sauce. In a medium-size saucepan, whisk together the brown sugar and cornstarch. Add the cider and stir well to dissolve the other ingredients. Cook the mixture over medium-high heat, whisking con-stantly, until large bubbles form around the perimeter of the pan, about 3 minutes. Re-duce the heat to low and allow the sauce to continue to simmer until it thickens, about 2 minutes more.
5. Remove the sauce from the heat and whisk in the cream and the butter. Let the sauce cool slightly, then taste it and add a pinch of salt, if necessary.
6. To serve the dessert, cut the baked cake into 3-inch squares and top each with a scoop of ice cream, if you like, and a drizzle of warm cider caramel sauce. Makes 12 squares and about a cup of sauce.

Packed with vitamin-rich pumpkin, these lightly spiced cake squares are a delicious autumn treat. Our recipe calls for canned or fresh produce (see our recipe for pumpkin puree), and the batter is a cinch for young chefs to mix up. Kids will also learn a candy-making technique as they prepare the
cider caramel sauce, a not-too-sweet complement to the cake.
