When was the last time you recited the first commandment? You shall have no other gods. What

are a few of the false gods you have been tangling with lately? What does your relationship with the

one true God look like? What does it look like to other people who come into your path? Do you

need Him every day or just when you die? The joyful news is that our relationship with God is de-

veloped and sustained by God’s almighty love for us.

I John 4:8 “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

The love of God identifies us as his beloved children. He loves us so much that He sends us (Jesus),

He empowers us (Holy Spirit) and he saves us. He is the only God that has something to offer. The

natural order, or the flesh, sends us to run after the following as our god:

Human achievements

Human goodness or devotion

Money or possessions Human pleasures

Family and friends

Romans 8:5 “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those

who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.”

All these things in this list are special blessings that God provides and are designed to show us His

love, but they are not to replace Him as the god(s) we worship. Too often we confuse God the

creator with something that he created. What fruit are you bearing in your life? Does it mostly re-

flect the list above? Or is God working in and through you in the lives of others to inspire their

faith walk? The people of the church are much better off making fewer demands, judging less, and

loving others more than devoting themselves to these other gods.

The first commandment reminds us that God will not tolerate any other god before Him. If we run

to another god, it will not be able to sustain our life as God intends it. Human achievement, re-

sources, pleasures, and people cannot save you from the weeping and gnashing of teeth that awaits

unbelievers. God the Father draws us to Himself by the Holy Spirit so that our hearts will not rest

on anything else but God’s love for us in Jesus Christ.

A Passion for Praise (Andrew Lawson)

Music Knowledge (Donna Smith)

Page 3 Volume 1, Issue 1

Would you like to know the “Hymn Story” of your favorite hymn? Please submit your favorite hymn to Donna Smith and she will look to see if there is a hymn story about the song and submit it for an upcoming newsletter. Email your favorite hymn name to Donna ([email protected]) or the church office and Donna will see what she can find.

If you have a passion for praising God through music and would like to use your talents on Sunday morning Contemporary service, please contact An-drew Lawson at ([email protected]).

We are seeking singers, guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, brass, winds, strings, piano, even kazoo. If you haven't picked up your instrument in years we can help dust off those cobwebs. Come and worship with us in the Lord with gladness and joy for He IS GOOD!

Greetings Lakeside Lutheran! I hope you are all safe and healthy. Nobody knows what the autumn season is going to be like, but I am trying to plan for whatever comes our way. At this point I would like to know who is planning to sing in the choir and when they plan to begin. Strategies to situate the choir in the sanctuary will depend on the make-up of the choir. We will al-ways maintain an excess of suggested distancing between singers in order to be sure no one accidentally spreads the disease. Face shields will be provided so that we can sing with a minimum of sound distortion and a maximum of safety. The choir should sit in the congregational pews until the anthem sing-ing, and afterward go back to their seat. We are going to procure some new music designed for smaller groups.

In the meantime, I would appreciate any volunteers to sing solos or duets. Please contact me at ([email protected]) or contact the church of-fice to let us know if you are (or are not) planning to join us this season so we can make plans to keep everyone as safe and comfortable as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Gospel music is an important form of Christian hymnody. Beginning in the late 1800s, this style of

music is associated with well-known Christian preachers and composers such as D.L. Moody, Ira

Sankey, and Fanny Crosby. Fanny Crosby captures the spirit of American gospel songs best.

It is estimated that Fanny Crosby wrote more than 8,000 Gospel song texts during her life of 95

years. Her hymns have been sung, and continue to be sung, more frequently than any other gospel

hymn writer. These songs have been a part of evangelical worship for the past 150 years.

Fanny Crosby was blind, making her prolific expression of hymns even more impressive. During a

period of her lifetime, when under contract to a music publisher, she wrote three new hymns per

week. She used over 200 pen names besides her own. Many of her original text are still being un-

covered and may be published in the future. Fanny lived in a poorer section of Manhattan and

worked in rescue missions.

The music to Blessed Assurance was composed by a close friend of Fanny Crosby, Phoebe Knapp. Mrs. Knapp was an amateur musician, her husband, Joseph Knapp was the founder of the Metropol-

itan Life Insurance Company. They lived in a Brooklyn mansion. Fanny was a frequent houseguest.

Phoebe Knapp was a pianist. She played the music she had recently composed for Fanny Crosby,

her response: “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine…” Phoebe Knapp published over 500 gospel songs

herself, including Open the Gates of the Temple.

Hymn Story: Blessed Assurance

1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!

O what a foretaste of glory divine!

Heir of salvation, purchase of God,

born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

Refrain: This is my story, this is my song,

praising my Savior, all the day long;

this is my story, this is my song,

praising my Savior all the day long.

2. Perfect submission, perfect delight,

visions of rapture now burst on my sight;

angels descending, bring from above

echoes of mercy, whispers of love. [Refrain]

3. Perfect submission, all is at rest,

I in my Savior am happy and blest,

watching and waiting, looking above,

filled with his goodness, lost in his love.

Hello Everyone,

The Woman’s Guild Executive Board met on August 06, 2020. We shared ideas on how to move forward during the COVID-19 crisis. There was concern over monthly meetings, meals, activities and fund raisers.

Good news! We will resume monthly meetings effective January 07, 2021. For that first meeting, please bring a Bag Lunch. Coffee and Tea will be provided. At the meeting, we will discuss how best to move forward.

There will not be a Style Show or Craft Fair. However, we hope to have our Soup Sale and the Bakeless Bake Sale so that we can still support our Mission Organizations in the community.

Many of you might not know but the FL-GA Convention will be virtual in September. If you receive the EVANGEL, information is in there. If not the link for it is: https://s3.amazonaws.com/mychurchwebsite/c4242/lwml_fl-ga_district_2020_fall_evangel_-final_2.pdf

Please stay safe and I look forward to seeing your smiling faces!

Vision Update

The initial implementation phase of Lakeside’s vision of being “Joyful Christians Inspiring

Spiritual Growth and Discipleship” was completed in August. Following is a brief summary

of what the initial five 90-day Vision Teams accomplished. Please listen for where you feel the

Holy Spirit is calling you to serve as we move on to the next phase.

The Vision Communications Team developed a comprehensive plan to communicate our

vision within the congregation and throughout our community. This included a vision logo

and roll-out plan. They also formed “Communications 2.0 Team” for the next implementa-

tion phase that will further develop an advertising strategy, execute the roll-out plan, evaluate

need for a comprehensive communications process for Lakeside beyond just our vision.

The Constitution & By-Laws Team reviewed and updated Lakeside’s constitution and by-

laws, developed an organization chart, job descriptions for church offices and ministries to

support our vision. They also identified the need for, and provided an example of an Opera-

tions and Policy Manual to fully document Lakeside’s organization, including job descriptions,

roles, responsibilities, accountabilities, policies practices and procedures. This will need to be

developed by a subsequent team in the next implementation phase.

The Bread Breakers Relaunch Team reviewed the existing ministry, developed an organ-

izational structure and additional guidelines to enhance our vision. Due to Covid-19 no

groups formed in July as originally planned This team continues to communicate the value of

participation in Bread Breakers to all members of the congregation. Current Bread Breakers

Relaunch Team members will oversee the next launch, now scheduled for January, 2021.

The Definitions Team developed definitions and scriptural references for the following

terms that were determined to be most critical to understanding Lakeside’s vision and ad-

vancing our congregation and community’s spiritual growth; Disciple, Discipleship, Spiritual

Growth, Spiritual Maturity and Spiritual Gifts.

Covid-19 significantly hampered The Worship Team from obtaining input necessary to en-

hance the music portion of worship at Lakeside as planned. They will determine a viable

method to utilize focus groups to obtain congregational members’ input on how to develop a

more holistic worship experience at Lakeside.

Social Distancing - Return to Worship Services

Ignite Youth Ministries is meeting from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm every

Wednesday night. At 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm teens ranging from 11-18 years

old meet for open game time. From 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm we joyfully engage

our youth with Biblical studies that impact their lives, foster spiritual

growth and equip them to share the gospel with their peers. We are cur-

rently in a year long series that will take the teens through the entire Bi-

ble called "The Echo" series. Contact Andrew Lawson for more infor-

mation: [email protected]

The Lakeside Media team is looking for volunteers for Sunday opera-

tion. You do not need to be a tech wizard in order to volunteer. You

will not be asked to volunteer weekly but instead be put on a sched-

ule. This is a joyful and exciting opportunity to assist others in hearing

and seeing God's word. Contact Andrew Lawson for more infor-

mation. [email protected]

SUNDAY SERVICES

9:00 am Contemporary and 10:30 am Traditional Worship Services are scheduled each Sunday in the sanc-

tuary. Attendance has been around 35 people at each service with greater than 6’ between seating loca-

tions. We have different seating areas reserved for each service throughout the sanctuary. We strongly

encourage our onsite worshipers to wear cloth face coverings or face masks when in the building for the

safety and security of others and social distance while on the campus. These precautions are in line with the

Public Health Advisory issued by the Florida Surgeon General on June 20 and CDC Interim Guidance for

Communities of Faith issued May 22. These guidance's also encourage us to provide alternate means of

worship for those who are vulnerable. We encourage our vulnerable members to worship with us on line

or in the parking lot thru our live local FM radio station at FM 100.9 at these times. In person worship at-

tendance is not a mandatory requirement and you should not feel pressured or embarrassed if you choose

not to attend in person. Holy Communion will be offered on the first and third Sundays of each month. We

will have communion in the pew for those in the sanctuary and also at the breezeway for those worshiping

in their vehicles. Additionally, we will offer communion after the 10:30 service at approximately 11:40 in

the breezeway for those who drive to the church after viewing the service at home on the first and third

Sundays.

LIVE STREAM AND YOUTUBE SERVICES

We continue to offer online Live Stream services at www.lakesidelutheran.net. Services are available live and

recorded on YouTube on the Lutheran Lakeside Church YouTube Channel.

OTHER ONSITE AND REMOTE ACTIVITIES

A limited number of small groups activities have started up on site. Some activities have been added as inno-

vative responses to the pandemic including on site and Zoom Bible Studies. Please check the website calen-

dar tab for an up to date listing of planned activities.

We will continue to send out updates, primarily by email, as they are made available.

Bread Breakers Breaking News

A special Council meeting was held August

12th to review a report received from the

Preschool Advisory Committee. We

shared this report with the congregation

and ask for your input.

We have scheduled a general congrega-

tional meeting for Sunday, September 13th,

following the late service (approximately

11:45 AM).

At this meeting, we will discuss various options and opportunities available to the

Lakeside Lutheran Church Preschool facility.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, many of you will not be in attendance. If you

have a recommendation or suggestion please email the Preschool Advisory Commit-

tee Chairman (Dan Ladigoski: [email protected]) or Church Council President
