One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. That’s a startling
statistic. But since 1996, Lee National Denim Day® has raised nearly $80 million for the fight against breast cancer ... $5 at a time.
On Denim Day®, October 8, Certified Alarm Systems & Home Theaters will be joining together for a very special “casual Friday” to help Lee National Denim Day celebrate 15 years of fighting breast cancer. Certified employees are gearing up to participate in this grassroots program which has raised more than $80 million for breast cancer research by simply asking the nation to put on their jeans for a $5 donation to the Women’s Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF).
This year, Lee National Denim Day is proud to partner with the Cancer Support Community, an international non-profit dedicated to providing support, education and hope to people affected by cancer.
Funds raised from participation in Denim Day® will support:• Groundbreaking research at Lee Translational
Laboratories nationwide to find less toxic, more effective treatments.
• Development of an early detection blood test in collaboration with the Breast Cancer Biomarker Discovery Project.
• Cancer Support Community centers nationwide which provide emotional and social support to cancer patients and their families.
We Protect The Things You Can‘t Replace. “Our employees are always interested in participating in more charitable events” says Jan & Rusty Howard, owners of Certified Alarm Systems & Home Theaters. “Lee National Denim Day is easy and fun to do. Everyone gets to wear jeans to work in exchange for a
$5 donation and the money helps fight breast cancer, a cause that is very important to many of our employees.”
Certified employees will add their own flavor to Lee National Denim Day by encouraging online and in office donation collections to commemorate their fundraising accomplishments and further the message of the importance of early
detection.
“We are more grateful every year at the number of organizations like
Certified Alarm Systems & Home Theaters, who come together across the country and donate to make this grassroots program a continued success,” said Liz Cahill, Vice President of Marketing Communications for Lee Jeans. “This year as we celebrate our 15th anniversary, we’d like to thank all the companies and people across the nation that has continued to participate in Lee National Denim Day and helped us contribute more than $80 million in the fight against breast cancer.”

“ Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you.“
That‘s what Mom said when you complain about being teased in the 2nd grade. Now, however the teasing has gone far beyond schoolyard taunts and onto the Internet, as „cyberbullying“ or bullying others through electronic means, has taken hold among tweens and young teens. Cyberbullying is a different issue than regular bullying because it‘s everywhere. You come home and it‘s there. It‘s on your phone - people are sending you cruel text messages. Anywhere from one-third to one-half of children say that they are experiencing this. The Internet gives children an increasing ability to do this cliquey behavior. The potential danger of cyberbulling was made evident last year when a 13-year-old Missouri girl committed suicide after repeatedly becoming the victim of an Internet hoax, perpetrated by several people (among them the mother of a peer). The mother was indicted for fradulently using a MySpace account. Even individuals who study cyberbullying were shocked by this case. Cyberbullying is a problem that affects almost half of all American teens. Whether you’ve been a victim of cyberbullying, know someone who has been cyberbullied, or have even cyberbullied yourself, there are steps you and your friends can take to stop cyberbullying and stay cyber-safe.
How Are Teens Cyberbullied?Being a victim of cyberbullying can be a common and painful experience. Some youth who cyberbully:
• Pretend they are other people online to trick others
• Spread lies and rumors about victims
• Trick people into revealing personal information
• Send or forward mean text messages
• Post pictures of victims without their consent
When teens were asked why they think others cyberbully, 81 % said that cyberbullies
think it’s funny.
Other teens believe that youth who cyberbully:
• Don’t think it’s a big deal• Don’t think about the
consequences• Are encouraged by friends• Think everybody cyberbullies• Think they won’t get caught
How Do Victims React?Contrary to what cyberbullies may believe, cyberbullying is a big deal, and can cause a variety of reactions in teens. Some teens have reacted in positive ways to try to prevent cyberbullying by
• Blocking communication with the cyberbully
• Deleting messages without reading them
• Talking to a friend about the bullying
• Reporting the problem to an Internet service provider or website moderator
Many youth experience a variety of emotions when they are cyberbullied. Youth who are cyberbullied report feeling angry, hurt, embarrassed, or scared. These emotions can cause victims to react in ways such as
• Seeking revenge on the bully• Avoiding friends and activities• Cyberbullying back
Some teens feel threatened because they may not know who is cyberbullying them. Although cyberbullies may think they are anonymous, they can be found. If you are cyberbullied or harassed and need help, save all communication with the cyberbully and talk to a parent, teacher, law enforcement officer, or other adult you trust.
Today’s teens use technology more than ever. Most have
high-speed Internet access, which they use to send
instant messages to their friends, create blogs and online
videos, keep personal profiles on social networking websites,
share photos, and more. Many teens also have cell phones and
spend hours text-messaging friends. Technology, especially
the Internet, allows all of us immediate access to information,
which can greatly benefit our lives. However, it has also pro-
vided some people with the means to exploit the innocent,
commit crimes, and inflict injury on others. This technology
has allowed some teens to take the bullying that thrives in
school hallways into cyberspace.
Cyberbullying is using the Internet, cell phones, video
game systems, or other technology to send or post text or
images intended to hurt or embarrass another person.
Cyberbullies victimize teens in a variety of ways:
Nearly 20 percent of teens had a cyberbully pretend to
be someone else in order to trick them online, getting
them to reveal personal information.
Seventeen percent of teens were victimized by some-
one lying about them online.
Thirteen percent of teens learned that a cyberbully was
pretending to be them while communicating with
someone else.
Ten percent of teens were victimized because someone
posted unflattering pictures of them online, without
permission.
Youth give many reasons for bullying; as adults, you can
help stop cyberbullying by learning why youth cyberbully and
by teaching youth how to interact positively in cyberspace. An
overwhelming majority of teens believe that youth cyberbully
because they think it’s a joke, not realizing the negative impact
it may have on the victim. Many teens also think that youth
cyberbully because they are encouraged by friends or because
they believe that everyone else cyberbullies. Dealing with
cyberbullying can be difficult, but there are steps parents, edu-
cators, and other caregivers can take to prevent it.
Parents and caregivers have a responsibility to help keep
youth safe online. In order to do this, parents have to be aware
Forty-three percent of teens
have been victims of
cyberbullying in the last year.
Eighty-one percent of youth
said that others cyberbully
because they think it’s funny.
Almost 80 percent of teens
said that they either did not
have parental rules about
Internet use or found ways
around the rules.

FIREWATCHFIREWATCHWith Howard Ward -BAKER FIRE DEPARTMENT
1. If an alarm “chirps,” warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
2. Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they’re 10 years old (or sooner) if they do not respond properly when tested.
3. Never remove or disable a smoke alarm.
Have a great fall season and just use common sense when it comes to fire prevention…sometimes it’s just takes a moment to make sure you and your families are safe…
Stay Safe,
Howard Ward -Baker Fire Department PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER (225) 706-0574 [email protected] cityofbaker fd.com
“Many homes may not have any smoke alarms, not enough smoke alarms, alarms that are too old, or alarms that are not working, we want residents to understand that working smoke alarms are needed in every home, on every level outside each sleeping area and inside each bedroom. And, if a smoke alarm is 10 years old or older, it needs to be replaced.”Smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death in a fire. NFPA statistics show that working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire nearly in half. But they must be working properly to do so. Data shows that many homes have smoke alarms that aren’t working or maintained properly, usually because of missing, disconnected or dead batteries. Roughly two-thirds of all home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button, and be sure EVERYONE in
your home knows their sound.
Hello readers,
I do hope everyone has had a safe and fun summer and on a personal note… I think it was one of the hottest and humid summers I have ever experienced…WOW!!!…I do
remember saying on one of my previous Firewatch articles that I wrote…”I was tired of the cold weather and looking for some warmer temps”… Well…all I can say about that is…”Careful What You Ask For”…oh well we live in Louisiana and we like it hot…I guess??!!?!?! Fortunately for us…fall is in the air and with that comes cooler temperatures. It’s this time of year when we want to encourage you to make sure you have your heating equipment and fireplaces inspected and cleaned before you use them. Firefighters around the country will respond to a large number of 911 calls from folks who turn or light their heating equipment and soon after will smell the odor of something burning. The majority of the time when we arive, the odor will be traced back to dust or lent in the heating equipment being burnt off. And in regard to fireplaces, people sometimes forget to open the damper doors thus filling their homes with smoke.
National Fire Prevention Month October 3-9, 2010During the month of
October, fire departments
around the country will
recognize and promote
a national campaign to
educate communities about
smoke alarms. National
Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) a nonprofit sponsor
is a great advocate for
fire prevention and we
encourage folks to visit their

more information.

How Can I Prevent Cyberbullying?Teens have figured out ways to prevent cyberbullying. Follow in the footsteps of other quick-thinking teens.
• Refuse to pass along cyberbullying messages
• Tell friends to stop cyberbullying• Block communication with
cyberbullies• Report cyberbullying to a trusted
adult
You can also help prevent cyberbullying by speaking with other students, as well as teachers and school administrators, to develop rules against cyberbullying. Raising awareness of the cyberbullying problem in your community by holding an assembly and creating fliers to give to younger kids or parents.
Don’t forget that even though you can’t see a cyberbully or the bully’s victim, cyberbullying causes real problems.
What Else Can I Do?Remember that the Internet is accessed by millions of people all over the world, not just your friends and family. While many Internet users are friendly, some may want to
hurt you. Never post or share your personal information online (this includes your full name, address, telephone number, school name, parents’ names, credit card number, or Social Security number) or your friends’ personal information. Never share your Internet passwords with anyone, except your parents. Never meet anyone face-to-face whom you only know online. Talk to your parents about what you do online.

According to the Propane Education & Research
Council (PERC), 53% of respondents admitted that they know little or nothing about standby generators. Based on that fact we feel it’s important to address the issue and hopefully educate you on the importance of standby generators.Imaging spending thousands of dollars on your home networking, security, and a home theater setup, then a week later a storm knocks down your power for five days. During this time, you are unable to use computers and telephones, not to mention you are vulnerable to theft or worse. In addition you are going to be scrambling to save food before it goes bad. Having a standby generator installed prior to the incident would have negated all of these issues that have become a reality. Living in Louisiana means we’ll get our share of hurricanes, but it doesn’t mean we have to suffer without power come hurricane season, making it more prudent to have a generator system in your home. As with anything else, a generator is an investment, but an important one nevertheless.
What is a standby generator? A standby generator is a self-contained enclosure installed outside of the home in a similar fashion to a central air conditioning unit. It is wired into
the home’s electrical system then powered via propane or natural gas, much like a barbeque grill. When the power grid in your city goes down or your home’s power is killed from lighting, the standby generator provides immediate energy to the home so the security system, telephone system, computers, heating and air conditioning, home network, refrigerator, and other electrical appliances can continue to run as if nothing happened. A standby generator can be installed in both new and existing construction homes.
Think you’re not vulnerable? According to the Electric Power Research Institute, about 3,500,000 people in the U.S. lose power each week. Another one in three consumers is worried that severe weather will affect their community within the next year. And for these reasons, automatic standby generators are becoming a common request by homeowners analogous to central air conditioning in the 1980′s. The truth is virtually everyone is interested in having a standby generator installed in their home and for many, price is a concern. The good
news is prices have come way down and there are now more choices than ever before to ensure the right generator can be matched to your home and families energy requirements. Standby generator prices have dropped 13%, making it an attractive and affordable option for anxious homeowners. Waiting out the power outage in the dark increases security risk and many more consequences.
Consequences of NOT having an automatic standby generator:• Food spoilage• Loss of a/c and heating
systems• Loss of computers and phones• Mold growth• Inability to use at-home
medical devices• Security system failure• Damage to computer systems
In short, every homeowner wants to be prepared for unexpected weather, unstable power grids, or even terrorist threats. At the same time, the average homeowner has also become more dependent on multiple computers and TVs, larger refrigerators, and sophisticated whole house electronic systems. The same is true for home-based businesses, valuable electronic data protection, and digital assets that simply cannot be replaced once damaged or destroyed.
Is your home’s POWERsecured? If not, you seriously need to reconsider

When Should You Hire A Professional To Help?• When you do not know all the web
tools, software, and steps needed.• When you want a professional
look. Maybe memberships, sign in controls, etc.
• When you want your site to do well in the search engines.
One thing to remember is that websites and the money put into them truly follow the saying: “You get what you pay for.“ Of course, this does not mean you have to pay a lot. With the tools available now, the real professional webmasters and internet developers can setup a website much easier than before. AND they can set them up so that you can make the changes you want by signing in and making them yourself. This ends the old complaint that you have a change and have to wait for them to make it.
In order to compete in a local to a global market, you have to be available to it. Having a professionally designed website gives your business an edge, saves time, reduces operating costs and improves your image. You can increase
your sales by being able to complete transactions online, anytime. Whether you are a large corporation, or an individual who simply wants to have a personal space on the internet, your site can serve as an informational tool you can refer your customers or interested parties to.

According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), there
has been an increase in the number of hijacked social networking accounts reported to www.ic3.gov.
One of the more popular scams involves online criminals planting malicious software and code onto to victim computers. It starts by someone opening a spam e-mail, sometimes from another hijacked friend’s account. When opened, the spam allows the cyber intruders to steal passwords for any account on the computer, including social networking sites. The thieves then change the user’s passwords and eventually send out distress messages claiming they are in some sort of legal or medical peril and requesting money from their social networking contacts. So far, nearly 3,200 cases of account hijackings have been reported to the IC3 since 2006.
Cyber thieves are also using spam to promote phishing sites, claiming a violation of the terms of service agreement or creating some other issue which needs to be resolved. Other spam entices users to download an application or view a video. Some of these messages appear to be sent from friends, giving the perception of legitimacy. Once the user responds to a phishing site,
downloads an application, or clicks on a video
link, the electronic
Social Networking - I.D. Hijackingdevice they’re using becomes infected. Some applications advertised on social networking sites appear legitimate but install malicious code or rogue anti-virus software. These empty applications can give cyber criminals access to your profile and personal information. These programs will automatically send messages to your contacts, instructing them to download the new application too. Infected users are often unknowingly spreading malware by having links to infected websites posted on their webpage without the user’s knowledge. Since the e-mail or video link appear to be endorsed by a friend, social networking contacts are more likely to click on these links.
Here are a few suggestions to keep in
mind to protect yourself while navigating the
Internet:
• Adjust website privacy settings. Some networking sites have provided useful options to assist in adjusting settings to help protect your identity.
• Be selective when adding friends. Once added, contacts can access any information marked as viewable by all friends.
• Limit access to your profile to only those contacts you trust with your personal information.
• Disable options, such as photo sharing, that you might not regularly use. You can always enable these options later.
• Be careful what you click on. Just because someone posts a link or video to their wall does not mean it is safe.
• Familiarize yourself with the security and privacy settings and learn how to report a compromised account.
• Each social networking site may have different procedures on how to handle a hijacked or infected account; therefore, you may want to reference their help or FAQ page for instructions.
If your account has been hijacked or infected, report it to by visiting www.ic3.gov or www.lookstoogoodtobetrue.com.
The Internet Crime Complaint Center is a partnership between the FBI and National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C).
