Sugarbeet Festival Sept. 28The Mead Area was founded, in large part,
upon the Sugar Beet industry. To celebrate this heritage, the Mead Area Community Foundation (MACF) created the "Sugarbeet Festival."
2006 was the inaugural Festival, and produced tremendous community support. The annual Festival continues to grow, and is now co-hosted by the Rotary Club of Mead.
The Mead Sugarbeet Festival is a one-day event held on the site of an actual sugar beet fi eld. Traditional fair activities are offered, including garden tractor races, skillet tosses, pedal tractor pulls and hay bale throws. However, attendees also have the opportunity to tour a sugar beet fi eld and watch beets as they are weighed and loaded for delivery to be converted to raw sugar.
The Mead Sugar Beet Festival is held the last Saturday of September in the beet fi eld located at the intersection of CR 13 and CR 32 between Platteville and Mead, Weld County.

Town of Mead Takes on Indoor Rec Sports
The Town of Mead is proud to be taking on the Rec volleyball and Rec basketball program that Mead Youth Sports Association has offered for several years. Through the dedication of the volunteers on the MYSA board these programs were given the opportunity to be continued when they were no longer offered through Mead Community School. This changing of responsibilities comes with the creation of the Recreation Director position in the Town of Mead. Currently, at this time, the town will only run the Fall and Spring Rec Volleyball program for participants in grades 3-8, Preschool/Kindergarten Basketball League, 1st & 2nd Grade Basketball League, and the 3rd-8th grade Young American Basketball Program. MYSA will continue to offer their Youth Soccer program, T-ball, and Fast Pitch softball for girls ages 5-14. MEAD MAYOR REPORT
School has started smoothly, the days are getting shorter and cooler, but I can tell you that things are getting hotter in your Town of Mead. Calendar wise the Mead Community Day will be on September 14 in the Town Park. This as you know is a spectacular event and is for the most part organized and run by your volunteer neighbors. The Sugar Beet Festival will be two weeks later on September 28 and will be held on the north east corner of WCR 32 and 13. This is also a great event , run also by 100% volunteers…mostly the Mead Rotary…and will have activities for all ages. While we are working on our calendars let’s be sure to put down October 18-19 as the Mead Clean up Days… snow dates are October 25-26.
Not to be outdone, Weld County will hold the election for county commissioners in early November. This election will also contain a Town of Mead question and I urge you to become familiar with why it is important to all of us. As a point of information, this election will be by state code a 100% mail ballot and I sincerely urge everyone that is eligible to vote.
If you haven’t noticed, and it would be diffi cult to miss, the town hall renovation is underway and going strong. The Mountain View Fire District has also relocated its equipment and personnel just up the street from the temporary town hall but is still within a short response time to all of Mead. Construction is also prevalent in the Liberty Ranch portion of town and the Vail View roads are being repaired (not at taxpayer expense). Our town engineer and Public Works are evaluating all the roads in town so we can prepare a long range budgeting plan to keep them in top shape for your driving pleasure. Also the Mead Rotary is planning on placing a fl ag pole at our veterans memorial to honor each of our military services. As a veteran I personally feel this is a wonderful gesture and I thank them.
With 2014 quickly approaching it is time that the town started on its annual budget cycle. If you think
there is something that should receive serious consideration and included as a line item, this is the time to let us know. Once the budget is locked in it is diffi cult to change it.
West Nile virus has been discussed at length and we are deeply concerned about public
health and the elimination of the mosquitoes that carry the disease. We have investigated spraying and found that to be extremely expensive. Our Public Works department has been very diligent and has been placing a substance approved by the Board of Health in any still water ponds and waterways. This material kills the larva before the insects can hatch and has been very successful.
A couple of town related items that are of concern to you. First, we have determined that due to postal zone coding some residents have been identifi ed as living in Longmont or Platteville instead of Mead. This is important in that Mead does not receive the taxes you pay on any vehicle purchases and in addition you will be assessed an RTD tax that you should not pay. Second, there has been some questions regarding intergovernmental agreements with neighboring communities. I can assure you that your town board believes in comity (the principle that one jurisdiction will extend certain courtesies to others) on the front range and as such we have agreements in place with the towns/cities to our north, west and east. We will continue a sensible and intelligent dialogue with the community to our south. Third, the Sheriff’s department has requested the assistance of all of us in terms of community watch. The town covers a large geographic area and the Sheriff’s Dept. cannot be everywhere at once. Basically they are requesting that if you see something that does not seem right, please call 911. The offi cers would rather respond and fi nd out that it is a perfectly innocent event than making out investigative reports and additional work. While the county dispatchers may request your name and address, all calls to 911 do remain anonymous.

business owners fi nd themselves in an uninvited situation that essentially forces an issue that needs to be resolved; and NOW! That uninvited situation was Alex’s dad becoming gravely ill in early 2012. Doctors gave him a 5% chance of survival. It was during his dad’s illness and, thankfully, his recovery, that Alex lost his job.
Both Alex (15 years) and Valerie (10 years) were already in the glass business and had been toying with the idea of starting their own business since 2010. So, at the loss of Alex’s job, they offi cially created Rickman Glass, an independent, family
owned and operated company.They live in Mead, a growing family
community and set up the original location in downtown Mead. Mountain View Fire Rescue (MVFR) donates Automated External Defi brillators (AED) to Local Schools.
According to the Red Cross, 350,000 people will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest this year. Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time, and MVFR is helping schools be prepared. In total, seven AED’s will be donated from MVFR to the following schools: Mead High School, Mead Middle School, Erie High School, Erie Middle School, and Niwot High School. These AED’s were donated by Zoll to assist MVFR with their AED’s in Schools program and MVFR also worked with Mead Booster Club to be able to purchase additional AED’s for the Mead schools, bringing the total to 8 new AED’s in the MVFR District.
Zoll AED Plus is the only AED with Real CPR Help technology, which provides feedback for both depth and rate of chest compressions during CPR. AED’s have the potential to save someone’s life when they are in cardiac arrest as an AED analyzes heart rhythm and determines if it is necessary to administer an electrical shock to the individual. This electrical shock helps the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm. For every minute without defi brillation, the chance of survival is reduced by 10%.
MVFR Foundation is accepting donations to be able to provide these in the elementary schools within the District and to provide traveling AED’s in each high school for sporting events.
