CYCLE A SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." This is a fascinating promise. Jesus enlightens us today about the power of communal faith. He emphasizes that a gathering of like-minded believers, small though it may be, has a powerful effect. As he tells his disciples, "If two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father." Alright then, what are we waiting for? We should take Jesus up on this amazing offer! Go-ing to Mass is one way to do so. When we gather together every Sunday, we do more than listen to readings and receive the Eucharist. We also PRAY together. The priest leads us in these prayers, of course, but we are meant to join with him, as the Second Vatican Council put it, with "fully conscious, and active participation" (Sacrosanctum Concilium, #14). We are to make the prayers our own by attentively joining in with them from our hearts. Mind-lessly reciting "Amen" or absently whispering the words of the Our Father likely loses the effect Jesus was talking about in today's Gospel. But truly praying and singing together with our parish community certainly fits the bill. We need not be at church to fulfill this kind of prayer, however. It only takes two! Those of us who live with others can exercise communal prayer every day in our own homes, just by joining each other for a few moments of petition or praise. Those who live alone may need to reach out more deliberately, but it only takes a phone call to "gather together" with an-other believer and offer up our prayers. May we have the courage to invite others to join us as we bring our needs to God.

Collect for September 10th O God, by whom we are redeemed and receive adoption, look graciously upon your beloved sons and daughters, that those who believe in Christ may receive true freedom and an ever-lasting inheritance. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

ALL SAINTS PRAYER GROUP (NEW!) The works of God begin and end in prayer. Prayer is es-sential in the kingdom of God. Prayer keeps us focused on God’s love and care. Prayer acknowledges God’s grace in our lives. “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am with them.” The strength of the early Church was not measured in numbers. The presence of Christ and His communion with His followers is what mattered. During these challenging days may we gather as believers. May we gather as Church. May we support each other in prayer. Do you need time for silence, sharing and reflec-tion? Come and join us in prayer. If you are interested in being part of our new All Saints Prayer Group, please call the parish office (503-232-4305) and leave your name and number with Bar-bara. We are trying to select days and times that would be best for the members of our new Prayer Group.

What Do You Know All Saints? Expand your knowledge of All Saints Parish and School with history and questions drawn from the past 100 years. Enjoy and celebrate All Saints! All Saints During World War II

World War II for the US, Portland and All Saints ran from Pearl Harbor day on December 7, 1941 to August 15, 1945 when the war in the Pacific came to an end with the detonation of the first atomic bombs over Japan. One of the first notes in the Bulletin came on June 14, 1942 with an announcement: “This is Flag Day – fly the Stars and Stripes.” In August, 1942 it was announced: “Next Saturday morning at 7:45 am and every Saturday until we shall have obtained victory and peace, we shall have a Novena of Our Lady of Victory to pray for our soldiers, sailors, nurses, for our heroic dead, and for victory and peace.” Men of the parish joined the Auxiliary Police branch of the Civil Defense organization. Parishioners planted potatoes in the parking strip on Ladding-ton Court to supply food for the parish and hot lunch program. The parish bought war bonds, storing them against the coming days of peace when an expansion would be required. The Red Cross sewing group met Wednesdays and Servicemen’s wives in the parish met on Friday evenings in the church hall. After D-Day in June 1944, the parish held special prayers for American GIs who had invaded “Fortress Europe” in the Normandy landings. There was a 5:00 am Mass every Sunday for shipyard workers who helped build Victory Ships. When V-E Day arrived, victory in Europe, women of the parish gathered and shipped clothing to the needy in war-torn Europe. Two All Saints parishioners lost their lives in battle in 1944: PFC Bernard F. Morrell on Biak Island in the Pacific, and Henry J. Kujal Jr. on the West-ern Front. The war ended on V-J Day in August 1945. On Sunday, August 19th, the parish gathered for a Mass in thanksgiving for victory and peace, and to pray for the safe return of all parishioners in the Services.

They are assessing the situation, accepting donations, and work-ing closely with Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Galveston/Houston. They've asked for people to do the following: Pray: God of hope and mercy, we lift up to you all victims of Hurricane Harvey, and those responding with assistance and aid. Protect all who are in any form of danger; provide practical help to all those in need; strengthen the weary; console the grieving and heal the suffering; and bless those engaged in disaster relief efforts with safety and courage. Help all people of goodwill to respond with compassion and generous hearts. Amen. Give: Help relief efforts in wake of Hurricane Harvey by texting CCUSADISASTER to 71777. You can also give by calling 1-800-919-9338, visiting www.catholiccharitiesusa.org or by mail: PO Box 17066 Baltimore, MD 21297-1066 (put "Hurricane Harvey" in the memo line of the check). Funds raised will go towards local Catholic Charities agencies' efforts to assist fami-lies and individuals with shelter, food, and other immediate and long-term recovery needs. At this time, Catholic Charities Oregon does not have the infrastructure or capacity to collect, store and send donated items to the victims in Texas. Monetary gifts are needed most. Please consider making a financial gift directly to Catholic Charities USA to assist their effort in aiding our neighbors in the Houston area.”
