the scoop SEPTEMBER 12 2012 Only two and a half weeks to go in our third term and only two weeks until our production for 2012 - 'I Speak for the Trees' - is live on stage at the Civic! Remember that tickets are on sale at the Civic booking office ($15 an adult, $8 per child) and that all Myross Bush students are in the show! Truffula Tree building - This Thursday after school there is a Truffula Tree building session in the Activity Centre. If you have half an hour to spare straight after school we would love your help. Main Character Costume discussion - This will also be straight after school in the Activity Centre on Thursday. Please pop in and catch up with Mrs Kahukura if your child is one of the speaking characters. September Board meeting - This was held last Monday night. The Board spent time working through their relevant meeting information on the online Board site that we have running. The last meeting minutes from August 13 were passed and are available on line under the Board page along with the September Board agenda. One of the significant discussion items was around the specific governance responsibility each individual board member has in our schools operation and what policies and procedures are in place to support that area. Their individual responsibility, in partnership with the Principal, is to make sure that these are relevant to our circumstance and a true reflection of our current practice. Another item of discussion was the pre review information that is being compiled by the management of the school for the ERO team that are here in Week 3 of next term. The English Curriculum development review document was tabled and highlighted and the rest of the Principals report that summarises school developments under was discussed. Our schools strategic goals each have an associated action plan. At each Board meeting our 5 strategic local goal action plan developments are summarised as part of the Principals Report to the Board. As well as this, one strategic local goal specific action plan is updated as a Focus Goal report. If you ever want to chat about what happens at a governance level of the school then please feel free to catch up with me, or any Board member. Principal’s Conference - Next week I am away in Melbourne for the Trans Tasman Principals Conference along with about 700 other Kiwi Principals. This is a great opportunity to hear international speakers present the latest in education thinking and to reflect on what we are doing here and what could apply to our schools context! I would like to acknowledge the support of the Board and the Southland Primary Principals Association who are investing in my professional learning and growth. Regards Tim Lovelock Principal Myross Bush School Newsletter Find out more at www.myrossbush.school.nz Our classes are finalising their entries to our ICT Cluster awards event. Week 9 Term 3MANUKA What a fantastic time Manuka class are having with their Measurement unit in maths. We have based it around the story of The Gingerbread Man. We have ordered our gingerbread men from tallest to shortest; found things around the classroom that measure taller or shorter or the same as our gingerbread men and had a competition to see who could build the longest bridge for the gingerbread men to cross the river. Lots of talk at home comparing tall, long, short, small things would be great! For our production costumes we need to be dressed in dark coloured 'skinny' clothes' (ie not too baggy as we are wrapping bandage around our limbs to look like the rings on the trunks). I have purchased enough colourful wigs for each child. We will be wearing bare feet so that's the easy part!

KOWHAI We are continuing with our persuasive writing this week, with the purpose of sharing it with an audience. We are excited about our 'tree project', where we investigate what lives in a tree and how we can make a difference to our environment. Production is coming up fast! If you were able to help out with costumes/jobs, pop into class this week- there is a list of jobs up in the classroom which you can put your name beside. Your help is much appreciated! Don't forget our costume making afternoon next Wednesday, where we will be making some other bits and bobs for our Bar-ba loots. We have a few runny noses around at the moment. It would be really helpful if each family could contribute a box of tissues to the class. Thank you!Certificates: Hollie Stoddart, Scott Hoffman

RIMU We are in desperate need of umbrellas for our dance so if you have any small colourful umbrellas lying around at home that we could borrow for the production it would be greatly appreciated as we only have 8 at school at the moment and we need 22. We were sad to lose Jake from our class and wish him well for his new school in Cromwell. We continue to work on shapes and basic facts for our maths. Certificates: Eilish Hegan, Jake Stoddart

RATA Hi, this Thursday is our planting day. You are welcome to join us at 11.15. Thank you to the parents who have already donated some small colourful annuals for us to plant. More donations would be welcomed. Please remember to send along a trowel if you have one. The production is taking shape and is looking good. A big thank you to Debbie Willis andLisa Tielkes for all their great ideas and hardwork putting together our costumes. The children will need to wear shorts and a t-shirt

on the night of the production. This is the last week of the term for set Math's and spelling homework. Please visit our class blog for math's and spelling games. Thanks for your support Evelyn

MIRO are very excited to begin setting up the worm farm this week with Mr Broad. We will be researching what worms like to eat and ways we can sustain this through recycling food scraps. On Friday a group of students will be visiting Nicholls garden shop to find out about what would be good to put in our school garden and tunnel house. We feel like we are really making a difference to our school environment. You can view our progress of this on our blog. This week in maths we are working on fractions. We are looking at finding a fraction of a set by equal sharing and using our addition, multiplication and division facts.Certificates: Hannah Symon, Blake Condon

TOTARA (Mrs Carr has been away this week with a bereavement in the family)• I am enjoying art - Karlee• I am loving production choir practice - Katie• My favourite thing is silent reading - Ashley• I enjoy my ukulele class with Judy - Millie• We’ve been writing about a book called Bert - Eilish• Production practice has been going really well - Ella

KAURI • We are getting some plants for the garden club soon. We have weeded and dug up the garden again to loosen the dirt and get rid of the rest of the weeds. Hannah F• It's hard learning and remembering my words for the production, but it was really good to have a rehearsal this week in the activity centre. Hannah C• It's a shame we didn't go skiing this week, it was cancelled because of the weather. I will definitely go next year though. Blake

MATAI • We've been learning using metaphors in our writing. I wrote this one - "Mr Lovelock gave a lion roar, powerfully at Ben." He wouldn't actually do that - it was just a made up story. Benjamin• We've been practising for our production. I'm in the dance. I can't wait till we finish and get to see how the dance will turn out. Olivia

Some of us have been learning about 'Managing our impulsivity' - a Habit of the Mind. We thought this t-shirt, seen on the playground was a classic example!
