SMAC(ING) IT UP

EDITORIAL

CLOUD, AN INEXORABLE FORCE, has taken over the word of technology today. It has become the ‘mother’ of all technologies. No business can bear fruits unless they kowtow to this inevitable force. Forget the large enterprise even SMEs too can’t remain untouched with it.

According to findings by SAP 90% of SMEs in India are of the opinion that cloud is important for furthering their business. Additionally, 87% of very ambitious Indian SMEs believe enterprise applications, analytics and mobile solutions will play an important role in achieving their ambitions.

The din over Cloud is pushing enterprises who want to go cheaper, faster into adopting the technology as fast they say can say “cloud”. However, there is one constraint the cloud adoption rate among the SMEs is still low.

As per Ernst & Young once SMEs become tech savvy they can propel the cloud adoption at a CAGR of 20 per cent between 2012-2016. It further announced that the total number of channel partners catering to SMEs in India increased by 10-15 per cent year-on-year in 2013, while the number of cloud channel partners increased by 25-30 per cent.

Not only this they are expected to play a pivotal role in the adoption of social, mobility, analytics and cloud (SMAC). Cloud gives the SMEs the flexibility to pay as per their need without spending too much on infrastructure. Social media has given SMES more cheaper and faster way to connect with the right customers at minimal cost. Mobility gives a plat-form to promote their brands and the right usage of analytics can help SMEs to improve business.

Once the SMEs understand the power of SMAC and incorporate it into their business strategies and harness it for their business growth can propel a new growth in this segment.

Information Security Spending to Grow Worldwide spending on information security will reach $71.1 billion in 2014, an increase of 7.9 percent over 2013, with the data loss prevention segment recording the fastest growth at 18.9 percent, according to the latest forecast from Gartner, Inc.

According to Gartner, the increasing adoption of mobile, cloud, social and information (often interacting together) will drive use of new security technology and services through 2016.

“This Nexus of Forces is impacting security in terms of new vulnerabilities,” said Gartner research director Lawrence Pingree. “It is also cre-ating new opportunities to improve effectiveness, particularly as a result of better understanding security threats by using contextual information and other security intelligence.”

Pingree said that the bigger trend that emerged in 2013 was the democratization of security threats, driven by the easy availability of malicious software (malware) and infrastructure (via the underground economy) that can be used to launch advanced targeted attacks.

“This has led to increased awareness among organizations that would have traditionally treated security as an IT function and a cost center,” said Pingree.

“No longer can decision makers

ignore the potential that big data and

cloud solutions can impact their business

outcomes,” ARUNA TELANG,

MANAGER, CONSULTING SERVICES – ASIA, SKILLSOFT.

SINGAREN SELECTS SDN-READY BROCADE ROUTING CORESingapore Advanced Research and Education Networkhas taken the wraps off the SingAREN-Lightwave Internet Exchange (SLIX), a 100 Gigabit per second (Gbps) community network with a Brocade MLXe-4 router at its core.

SLIX delivers one hundred times more capacity than SingAREN’s previous generation of network infrastructure, providing stronger support for complex, data- and bandwidth-intensive research in areas such as genome and meteorological studies. In addition, the MLXe-4 core router provides a clear path for the use of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) in SLIX’s network.

The new network includes a dedicated dual fiber-optic ring – capable of supporting multiple 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) links – that provides a resilient backbone connecting Singapore’s key research and education sites. This opens up new possibilities as a test-bed for the Singapore research and education community, extending database mirroring services, bilateral disaster recovery, high-performance computing federation and shared services, high volume peering with content data networks, and other value-adding services.

“I am happy to announce the launch of the SLIX project with its 100 Gbps resilient backbone,” said Professor Francis Lee Bu-Sung, President of SingAREN. “SingAREN is again pushing the envelope of technology to provide high-speed connectivity and services that meet the needs of the research and education community. We see Brocade as a key technology partner to meet the challenges of building an agile, scalable, high-speed network infrastructure and Internet exchange point.”

Indian cities are all set to become ‘smart’ as the new Narendra Modi regime wants to take the city living to a whole new level where utility services are available round the clock. But this requires a huge

infrastructure support connected through a strong backbone of cabling network. Therefore, structured cabling market is likely to go through a major transition. As per market-intelligence organization BSRIA by 2020 the total structured cabling market will exceed $8 billion. Enterprises are focussing on implementing best-of-the-breed technologies to deliver differentiated capabilities. “Post the recent general election in the country, the new government’s initiative towards build-ing smart cities & emphasis on digitization has resulted in a positive market sentiment for cabling industry,” says Shailesh S. Bhayade, VP (Struc-tured Cabling Business), D-Link (India) Limited, “Recent market reports also suggest that the cur-rent market size is poised to touch nearly Rs. 1500 crore with an anticipated growth of 20-25% in years to be followed. Hence moving forward there

will tremendous growth opportunities in this segment with huge investments coming in from government sector.”

“We also see a need to address the growing complexity of network and cabling environments and the needs of geographically distributed orga-nizational networks,” says David Shalts, Regional Sales Director, RiT Technologies.

The rising use of HD video, high quality voice & data services and remote access of applications will continue to drive the demand for structured cabling in the coming years.

Shailendra Trivedi, Director (Operations and Channel Development), R&M India, says, “The growth drivers in structured cabling are the prod-ucts, which are becoming more solution based as per the customers’ requirements. Structured cabling in data centers are growing but isn’t a large chunk of the market. But that’s going to increase soon.”

The MarketTelecom infrastructure, datacenters, government

spending, townships and the hospitality sector are creating new revenue streams for the vendors.

SME is another rising sector across all verticals that are strategically investing in reliable, robust and intelligent infrastructure that ensures opera-tional efficiency, reduced operating costs and significant return-on-investment. Data Centre consolidation is further driving demand for fibre-based solutions.

Trivedi mentions, “All verticals have a need for structured cabling but as for the general require-ment we could say IT/ITES, manufacturing, auto-motive hold the largest pie.”

“With strong emphasis be laid on network infrastructure, corporate/ enterprises have been making huge investments in enhancing their networks. Similarly government initiatives to promote digitization have also been instrumental in driving ICT segment. With structured cabling being an essential part of network, we have wit-nessed that higher adaption of cabling solution across various business verticals,” comments Bhayade.

The atmosphere of uncertainty which had hung in the air for the last couple of months seems to be fading away with the election of the new government, rupee appreciation and others. The market is abuzz with a positive sentiment and it will definitely reflect on the

structured cabling market.

Today, IT departments face myriad of chal-lenges in terms of addressing security, virtualiza-tion and big data but on the other hand it provides opportunity for technology innovators. “There is a need to address the growing complexity of net-work and cabling environments and the demands of geographically distributed organizational networks. India is a significant market and offers tremendous potential for growth,” informs Shalts.

In the last year or two structured cabling market lost some of its mojo in face of rupee depreciation, economic downturn, and the impending elec-tions. However, in the post-election scenario with the emphasis on infrastructure development – Finance Minister Arun Jailtley had promised allo-cation of a sum of Rs 7,060 for the development of the smart cities – and the appreciation of the rupee things are starting to look up once again.

Despite the turbulent economic state in the first half of 2013-14 & subdued market senti-ments, D-Link India managed to record an overall growth of 37.8% during FY 2013-14. “We success-fully managed to bag large enterprise projects throughout the year. We also introduced an exten-sive range of networking enclosures to address the growing demand of enterprises. So along with our enhanced focus on this business, robust product-line and relentless channel support, we managed to record a remarkable growth of approx. 58% in comparison to last year,” says Bhayade.

R&M says it was able to achieve a double digit growth last year like its previous ones. “The opportunities that the market gives us are the huge amount of projects that are coming up in India, as the country is rapidly growing. The challenges in the market are the number of players as well as the customer’s budget. But these factors can be dealt

with effective planning,” remarks Trivedi. RiT, a relatively new company in India, says to

have seen growth in this market as well as other international markets such as China and Europe. Last year it expanded the sales of its new network infrastructure management solution, PatchView+ as well as its copper and fibre cabling solutions.

Technologies Copper continues to dominate the market due to its easy installation feature along with high level of acceptance in Data center space though Fiber too is fast catching up. Today, Copper and Fiber stands at approximately at the ratio of 80:20.

According to a CyberMedia Research Fiber optic cabling is likely to drive the SCS growth. The increased use of digital content and increas-ing reliance on online applications and demand for broadband are resulting in an increase in fibre deployments.

In recent times Fiber has garnered a lot of mind share, with FTTH & FTTP being increasingly deployed. A lot of recent high-end residential proj-ects are also opting for FTTH, as it allows a single service provider to deliver voice, data and video content efficiently. The rapid spread of broad-band (3G, 4G / LTE roll-outs) and innovations in wireless technology is driving the adoption of advanced structured cabling solutions. This trend is likely to see a further increase as FTTH finds increasing acceptance and deployment in India.

In the Fiber category OM3 has become the preferred solution reason being it supports higher data rates and longer distances. Given the higher bandwidth advantage and high-end applications that most customers use, it advisable for custom-ers to opt for OM3 Fiber solution.

The growing need for faster data transmission and stable performance across a wider frequency range has given rise to increased adoption Cat 6a and Cat 7. CAT 7 is the latest and faster Ethernet cabling standard and it provides full backward compatibility to 10/100/1000 Mbps networks.

Shalts informs, “Shielded cables (S/FTP) are gaining popularity in LAN deployments since screened cabling brings valuable and improved performance such as noise immunity – which is vital in high-speed communication as well as enhanced security and supports the highest band-width Ethernet i.e.10 Gbps and above.”

OpportunitiesAdoption of best-of-breed technologies to deliver differentiated capabilities is gradually becoming a key trend among SMEs.

“We see great opportunity in SMEs,” says Shalts, “they are increasing their demand for sophisticated network infrastructure. We also see a bigger understanding for the need to invest more in advanced equipment in order to maxi-mize network and capabilities, reduce operational

“THE GROWTH DRIVERS IN STRUCTURED CABLING ARE PRODUCTS BECOMING MORE SOLUTION BASED AS PER THE CUSTOMERS’ REQUIREMENTS. STRUCTURED CABLING IN DATA CENTERS ARE GROWING BUT ISN’T A LARGE CHUNK OF THE MARKET. BUT THAT’S GOING TO INCREASE SOON.” SHAILENDRA TRIVEDI, DIRECTOR (OPERATIONS AND CHANNEL DEVELOPMENT), R&M INDIA

“RECENT MARKET REPORTS ALSO SUGGEST THAT THE CURRENT MARKET SIZE IS POISED TO TOUCH NEARLY RS. 1500 CRORE WITH AN ANTICIPATED GROWTH OF 20-25% IN YEARS TO BE FOLLOWED.” SHAILESH S. BHAYADE, VP (STRUCTURED CABLING BUSINESS), D-LINK (INDIA) LIMITED

space. Moving ahead, D-Link is determined to focus on this approach and take it to the next level.

“From enterprise point of view as D-Link will continue to be bring-in products with technology advancement and further provide better infra-structure for enterprise. Last but not the least, network enclosure/ rack solution will be another key focus area at D-Link,” concludes Bhayade.

FinallyWith the increase in data centers, government thrust on infrastructure development and increased adoption mobility, the growth of robust backbone is bound to happen, which means the future of cabling industry is far more promising.

“THERE IS A NEED TO ADDRESS THE GROWING COMPLEXITY OF NETWORK AND CABLING ENVIRONMENTS AND THE DEMANDS OF GEOGRAPHICALLY DISTRIBUTED ORGANIZATIONAL NETWORKS.” DAVID SHALTS, REGIONAL SALES DIRECTOR, RIT TECHNOLOGIES.

expenditure and streamline work.” He further adds they are mainly focussing on our complete range of passive solutions of copper and fiber for this segment.

Bhayade adds, “One of the key challenges for SMEs today is to enhance their operational effi-ciency, be it internal or external. As a result SMEs today are investing in building & enhancing their existing network infrastructure that will eventu-ally facilitate business operation & contribute to their organizational growth.”

Channel Partners play a significant role in help-ing customers choose the right solution and deploy. Industry consensus it’s imperative working towards empowering the channel partners with a wide and unique portfolio of products and solutions.

RiT is focussing significantly on developing its channel eco-system to enable increased market penetration across the country. While R&M is looking to establish the positioning of its products with the customer to better understand the value proposition that R&M offers.

D-Link says its business approach is of right price, right product and right supply matrix which have enabled it to garner maximum customer mind-share in end-customer, SMB & Enterprise

With the IT hardware products becoming commodities and the competition in the market shooting up, the component and accessory vendors are losing advantage over each other. However, the companies are trying to bring innovative products and finding newer markets to create a better mind share – at least Transcend is doing so.

TED CHENG ACCOUNT MANAGER, TRANSCEND

“WE FIND THAT THERE IS AN INCREASED DEMAND FOR MAC SOLUTIONS IN INDIA. OUR NEWLY LAUNCHED PRODUCT JETDRIVE SSD UPGRADE KIT IOS, IS AN INTERNAL MEMORY SOLUTION BUT YOU CAN TAKE IT OUT AND PUT IT IN THE SLICK ALUMINIUM USB 3.0 EXTERNAL CASING TO MAKE IT AN EXTERNAL STORAGE FOR MAC.”

S tanding true to the meaning of its name, Transcend has evolved from its previous position. Started as a memory modules company, now it

offers an assortment of PC peripherals including external storage, MP3 & MP4, Pen Drives, Card Readers, DVD drives, Memory module and many more. Its present portfolio of products can stand eye to eye with the likes of SanDisk and storage vendors like Seagate and WD – at least for exter-nal storage devices.

From the market perspective the company believes that India is one of the fastest growing markets along with Russia, Japan and Germany – at least from the revenue contribution perspec-tive. India contributes 15 per cent of their overall revenue, which is better than their performance in China. Even from the memory products’ market share perspective, they are the leader in this geog-raphy. Therefore the company think tank believes it is worth their time to spend more man-hour in this country than anywhere else. Therefore one can see in every quarter someone from their Taiwan HO flies down to this market for two weeks to work with their local partners. This quarter it is the turn of Hugo Lee, Sales Manager and Ted Cheng, Account manager duo to spend time with the local partners in India and visit cities

including Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Banga-lore. Their objective is to maintain their current partner relationship and look for some industrial customers.

The company’s strategy is not to consolidate its position in the traditional memory market but also address the emerging market including Apple and Android market. Plus their focus is to work closely with various vertical industries.

Therefore focusing on the Apple products, which its competitors do not have, Transcend has brought out a range of Apple solution espe-cially for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Ted Cheng, Account manager, Transcend says, “Out of the entire end user compute population in India 5-10% are Apple products, therefore Apple solutions, which include JetDrive SSD, JetDrive SSD upgrade kit, JetDrive Lite flash cards, special memory module for the MacBooks, etc.

Hugo Lee, Sales Manager, Transcend, says, “We find that there is an increased demand for Mac solutions in India. Our newly launched prod-uct JetDrive SSD upgrade kit iOS, is an internal memory solution but you can take it out and put it in the slick aluminium USB 3.0 external casing to make it an external storage for Mac.”

It means the product has little extensions at the back, which makes it easier to tuck into the MacBook slot and the users can add up to 128 GB capacity.

Ted Cheng, Account manager, Transcend, added, “The memory module we have for the MacBooks are tested properly whereas the generic memory modules, which can go into the

MacBook also, are not properly tested. Even the memory modules that our competition offers for the MacBooks are also not properly tested.”

Although Transcend has launched products for MacBooks, the company is also equally sensi-tive to other markets therefore the company has brought out new products for Android OS and Windows OS.

The latest offering for Andoid smartphone is OTG card reader and OTG pen drive. The card reader takes MicroSD card, SD Card and Pend Drives.

Apart from bringing innovative products to

the market, the company also concentrates on developing business relation with large SIs to take their memory solutions to various project oppor-tunities in the country. The company is already working with customers like Infosys, HCL, Wipro, Accenture, Intel, for a long time.

In addition to these activities, Transcend moots to have one dedicated person stationed in the country to look after developing industrial busi-ness for them. Plus, Hugo says, “In future, the sales persons from Taiwan will stay in India for a long time – up to two months at a stretch to overlook the smooth functioning of the operation.”

With the total Indian printer market expected to grow to 3.4 million units (Rs. 25,883 million) in fiscal year 2014 Epson says it is well positioned to capture a big pie of this market.

MINORU USUI PRESIDENT, EPSON SEIKO CORPORATION

“THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE CONSUMERS IN THE EMERGING MARKETS ARE DIFFERENT AND WE WANT TO MAKE DEEPER INROADS INTO OFFICE AND CORPORATE PRIVATE USERS.”

With the overall printer market expected to grow from Rs 22,880 million in 2013 to Rs 33,000 mil-lion in 2017 and the same resil-

ient growth expected in inkjet and laser printer categories Epson has chalked out plans to capture 15-20% of the office laser printer market, which is around 300,000 in terms of units by 2017.

It was in 2011 that Epson launched its Ink Tank printers as a better option to laser printers and invigorated by its acceptance not only among the Soho and commercial customers but also the corporates, enterprise and home too the printer company is increasing focus towards making its Ink Tank more acceptable in the market.

“The shift from laser printers has begun,” stresses Minoru Usui, President, Epson Seiko Corporation. “They are better option to laser printers because they are of better quality, lower cost of printing, lower power consumption, lower heat generation and have more features compared to a laser printer for the same cost. There has been immediate acceptance by SoHo and commercial users and corporate, enterprise and home too are rapidly embracing the change.”

At present Epson has A4 Ink tank printers and by November it plans to launch for A3 too.

From 25% in 2011 Epson’s A4 Inkjet has gar-nered a market share of 44% (in terms of value) in

2013. And with a turnover of Rs. 8840 million in 2013, it is expecting to touch Rs. 10,000 million in 2014.

“The distinctive focus on emerging markets like India is clearly reflected in our long range corpo-rate vision. The expectations of the consumers in the emerging markets are different and we want to make deeper inroads into office and corporate private users,” emphasises Usui.

Epson’s plan of action is not only to build on the initial success and make deeper inroads to the office and corporate print user but also focus on providing the right customer value by not meeting just their requirements but also acceding them.

Ram Prasad, Deputy General Manager, Epson India, says, “Earlier there was hesitation among users for printing but with Ink Tank there has been a sheer increase in the volume of printing. There has been a remarkable shift from mono to color printing. After getting the no. 1 position in inkjet printers we want to now target the laser printer space with our entry level mono Ink Tank based inkjet printers.”

He further adds, “For the mono-series printer 40% of the business comes from SMB and government.”

While there was a 19% increase in inkjet mul-tifunctions, inkjet single function, DMP and laser single function printers declined.

TAKING ON THE PRINTER MARKET WITH INK TANK

With the shift more towards multi-function printers (MFPs) and that too towards laser MFPs Sambamoorthy, director sales and marketing informs that out of the total laser printer, the entry level laser printers constitutes to over 75 % of the total market size. “Our current two models M 100 and M200, address the 75% of laser printers in terms of reliability, power saving, cost per print is unbeatable, or even users compare it with the refill,” he added.

“SMB CAN ACT AS A CATALYST TO

UCAAS ADOPTION”

GAURAV SHARMA RESEARCH MANAGER,

ENTERPRISE COMPUTING, IDC INDIA

According to IDC the evolution of SMB sector can act as a catalyst to the UCaaS adoption rate but only if SMB is given the attention it needs, in terms of custom solutions and

flexible models. In a chat with SME Channels Gaurav Sharma, Research Manager, Enterprise Computing, IDC India, talks about the opportunities in UCaaS for SMBs.

As organisation moves towards cloud based solutions how

attractive is hosted unified communi-cation or UCaaS for organizations especially SMBs/SMEs? Hosted Unified communication has its own merits but is definitely capex intensive as com-pared to UCaaS/cloud based solutions and SMBs/ SMEs might find it expensive relative to the UCaaS solution. UCaaS is good for scalability, flexibility & availability: the 3 needs of any SMB. SMB’s who are on the growth path may prefer UCaaS but have to be cautious as the individual benefits of UCaaS may not be achieved if other components in the eco-system remain laggard. SMBs have special needs and hence solution options are required which today are few in the market. Solutions are today designed for enter-prises and then are shrunk to fit SMBs for instance an SMB may require only a video conferencing solution to start off with and not the complete col-laboration suite.

However, UCaaS is still an evolving concept with most of the business models & vendors learning on the job. Cloud based solutions still need a push in the market as awareness remains low despite being attractive in terms of lower capex. The adoption of UCaaS / cloud based solutions will happen rapidly if customized cost effective solutions, awareness and support struc-

ture are in place. SMBs will have to be cautious in their business priorities and data security (in case of critical data, if any). 3rd platform will push the evolution and adoption of more innovative UCaaS business models.

One of the limitations of UCaaS is the custom-izability when customers are looking for unique features or linkage to a non-standard set of appli-cations. In situations like these, hosted UC would be a better fit.

The evolution of SMB sector can act as a cata-lyst to the UCaaS adoption rate but only if SMB is given the attention it needs, in terms of custom solutions and flexible models.

What is the future of UCaaS in India and how big is the address-

able UCaaS market in India? UCaaS market in India is expected to grow as SLA & integration models evolve further to provide customers with more pocket friendly choices. UCaaS is a new concept in India which is in the early stages of evolution with vendors and part-ners gearing up for the growth/potential. India has a large addressable market (primarily in small & medium business segment) with either the organizations still looking at UC’s adoption or the adoption has been done at a first level and they are looking at next generation offerings. IDC expects the India UCaaS market to surge to

US$80.2 million in 2018, at a CAGR of 101.2% ((2013-2018) Source: Asia Pacific Excluding Japan)) 2014 IDC Collaboration Practice. UCaaS market in India is 9.7% of the total APeJ UCaaS market ((2014) Source: (Asia Pacific Excluding Japan)) 2014 IDC Collaboration Practice.

What factors are contributing to the overall growth of UCaaS?

There are innumerable factors which are driving the growth of UCaaS like pocket friendly Opex solutions, reduced/Nil capex, scalability for usage. The ever increasing pressures of cost cutting & increasing productivity and the availability of innovative pricing models are increasingly lead-ing organisations towards adopting this model which is easy on the pocket. Further the non requirement for new/niche & expensive skills sets are also pushing businesses towards adopting this technology addressing our need to stay connected all the time. The need to concentrate more on core busi-ness, expansion needs of the large and medium organizations, specific needs of the small/novice organizations that can be catered to, innovative service & support options, immediate usage (quick start) possible with minimal infrastruc-ture requirement, availability of high bandwidth, bundled offerings and the huge potential market with SMBs flourishing and enterprises looking to

expand are all driving the need for this technology.

Which verticals are majorly going for UCaaS?

Some of the key industries which are seriously looking at this technology are retail banking, discrete manufacturing, professional services, healthcare, education and communication & media.

What are the restraints and opportunities in the UCaaS

market? Like every other technology this market too offers opportunities and challenges. UC adoption is yet to mature in India and the sluggish economy prompting the need for opex friendly solutions. The cost & productivity pressures and increasing costs of space, power & cooling are increasing the need for collaboration solutions. Organizations of all sizes are looking at focussing more on their

about UCaaS, integration issues with the existing infrastructure, lack of proper business outcome based messaging, and with the SLA models still evolving are leading to challenges in this market. Vendors need to push/educate the market on short term and long term benefits.

How can the channel partners leverage from this trend?

Channel partners can capture the opportunities presented by this market by focusing on enter-prises with the next generation offerings and integrating the issues of customers. It needs to be kept in minds that the messaging should be business outcome based rather than technical and they should adopt a holistic solutions for custom-ers (as per the need). They need to adopt a services approach, rather than product approach. Empha-sis should also be put on strong sales & marketing campaign for awareness. Lastly, they should focus on SMBs with opex friendly models.

core business and even new SMBs are looking at marking their presence. The expansion needs & global presence for the organizations and 3rd platform is pushing the need for “stay connected & collaborate”.

However, security concerns, bandwidth demand (it doesn’t come cheap), sluggish econ-omy, regulatory compliances, lack of awareness

“HAVE STRENGTHENED

THE BRAND EQUITY”

DAVID SHALTS REGIONAL SALES

DIRECTOR, RIT TECHNOLOGIES

Structured cabling vendor RiT Technologies is significantly developing its channel eco-system to enable increased India market penetration. In a chat with SME Channels David Shalts,

Regional Sales Director, RiT Technologies talks about their plans. Excerpts.

Brief us on RiT India operations? India is fast growing and RiT considers it

a strategic market. We develop solutions that are customized specifically for the Indian customers. While continuing our focus on the enterprise market, we are also expanding now to address small and medium – sized corporations with an extensive product line across fiber and copper solutions (including the complete range of cabling products, from the communications room to the ends user outlet).

We believe our solutions radically change the ability of organizations to budget, control and optimize their network infrastructure.

Along with our partners spread across major metros in India, we offer ground-breaking solu-tions such as Intelligent Network and Infrastruc-ture Management (IIM).

RiT has an exceptionally quick turnaround time, a customer centric approach, and a very competitive pricing for a premium brand. We also provide excellent local technical support, so I think we are well positioned to offer a compelling customer experience.

What all products and solutions do you have in your portfolio for

India business?

Addressing the Indian market, RiT Technologies has an extensive cabling product line across both optic fibre and copper addressing the require-ments from switch to outlet (including cables, outlets, connectors, patch panels and more).

All our products are certified as component level according to TIA and ISO/IEC standards (including ANSI/TIA-568-C.2 and ISO/IEC 11801 2nd edition) making them fully compatible with any certified product in the market. This is very important, in order to avoid future “lock-in”.

The RiT advanced Intelligent Infrastructure solution provides network utilization for data centers, communications rooms and work space environments. RiT’s IIM enables organizations to plan & provision expansion and equipment add-ons, taking in critical variables such as power and space. With our IIM solution, IT managers can monitor and troubleshoot their communications networks, maximizing utilization of equipment and increasing the reliability and physical security of the network.

What is the USP of your prod-ucts vis-a-vis other structured

cabling vendors? First, RiT Technologies has a strong track record as an innovator in the field of cabling. The com-

pany has written many patents and has invented many products such as Intelligent Infrastructure Management (IIM) and switchless panels. RiT is a full participant in the TIA and ISO/IEC cabling standard committees: we participated in creating Category 6, 7 and 8 standards, and consequently were one of the first companies to produce a full range of Category 6A and & 7 cables for high speed applications. We are also one of the few companies to offer S/FTP cabling solutions for the highest bandwidth Ethernet 10Gbps.

Second, the RiT range of products and solu-tions is developed, engineered and assembled onsite at our corporate headquarters. The result is a product range of the finest quality that makes us a premium brand.

Third, our pricing is very competitive, which makes our offering just about the best return on investment you can find in our field. Together with our strong presence in India and quick deliv-ery times, I think our offering is extremely valu-able for the Indian customer.

How is the India market shaping up for you? Please elaborate on

your marketing strategy planned for India? Our India marketing strategies focuses on

understanding the specific needs of the Indian market and delivering best-of-breed solutions. For example, we developed switchless panels to answer the need of IT managers to ease mainte-nance and prevent patch cord mess (the switch-less panels do not require patch-cords to connect to the switch)

Another part of our strategy is empowering our partners, not only with unique solutions, but also with training and support services through the complete sales cycle and with competitive pricing.

How much contribution comes from the SME segment in terms

of business? SMEs contribute to our business significantly. We see an increase in demand for sophisticated net-work infrastructure among SMEs and an under-standing for the need to invest more in advanced equipment in order to maximize network and

Which all verticals are you focused on?

We envision that channel partners will be playing a significant role in helping customers choose the right solution and deploy. We are working towards empowering our channel partners with a wide and unique portfolio of products and solutions

We also offer our partners attractive price-points as well as exceptional training & education (including technical, product & sales training) joint customer visits, product demonstrations and technical and pre-sales support.

What is your channel strategy and what kind of channel model

do you follow? We are focussing significantly on developing our channel eco-system to enable increased market penetration on all India level.

We have main distribution partners present in West and South of India supported by other regional distribution partners. Our plan is to add more partners over the next six months to increase our presence in the market.

We have also signed up with various system integrators to address all small and large enter-prise markets and other various verticals.

What is your vision and goal for this year?

We are establishing the RiT brand through greater market penetration and have strengthened the brand equity. We are scaling up our operations through partners across enterprises, SMEs and mid market segments.

We will also be appointing regional partners across all metros. Our plan is to appoint 20 system integrators and 5 major consultants in each region. We also have plans to establish presence in Tier II cities, including; Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai.

capabilities, reduce operational expenditure and streamline work.

What all products and solutions do you have for them? Tell us

more about your SME strategy? We are mainly focussing on our complete range of passive solutions of copper and fiber for this seg-ment. These are cost effective solutions essential for the growth of the SME segment.

Then, we have our special high density solu-tions which can help in saving space which is very critical again for this segment.

Our focus on this segment is supported by ready availability of products, aggressive prices, complete range of passive solutions, good installer partners, strong support and after sales services.

To support this we are building a strong network of partners, resellers and value added distributors.

Dell’s strategic engagement with the Tier 2-5 channel partner community to reduce gaps in markets with high potential has finally paid off with a triumphant quarter for the SB segment under Dell CSB

P. KRISHNAKUMAR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & GENERAL MANAGER, CONSUMER & SMALL BUSINESS, DELL INDIA.

“WE ARE HAVING SEPARATE CHANNEL TEAM TO FOCUS ON THE MOBILE SPECIALITY STORES. EARLIER, IT WAS NOT A MAJOR FOCUS AREA FOR US BUT NOW WE ARE WORKING TO APPOINT DISTRIBUTORS IN CITIES.”

Post elections business sentiment in the market has seen an upswing and the traditional PC OEMs are also aggressively charting their way into the

Tablet market. According to IDC, tablet market shipments in India stood at 0.86million (mn) units in Q2 2014 i.e. a quarter-on-quarter growth of 9% over Q1 2014.

While Android continues to dominate the market Windows OS is also gaining ground. Tablets with screen size 7 < 8 inch contributed to 88% of the overall market in Q2 CY2014. IDC expects dominance of the aforementioned screen size to continue. However on the low volume side, tablets with screen size 10 < 11inch grew by 54% in Q2 CY2014.

The top vendor remains Samsung with Micro-max bagging the second spot displacing Apple.

Another giant in the PC market Dell, which launched its Tablets earlier this year, is bringing out a new range of voice-enabled Tablets which are expected to hit the market by September 15. Tablets launched in January came with just WiFi or WiFi/ 3G through which one could Skype but had no dialling facilities.

“Hence for this festive season we will have voice enabled Dell tablets in India which will be avail-able in 7” and 8” form factor on both Android and Windows platform,” informs P. Krishnakumar, Executive Director & General Manager, Con-sumer & Small Business, Dell India.

Dell’s small business segment under Dell CSB has witnessed substantial growth thanks to its recent channel alignment: strategic engagement by Dell with the Tier 2-5 channel partner commu-nity to reduce gaps in markets with high potential and a heavy focus on increasing PC penetration in SB via specifically targeted customer engage-

ment activities. As per IDC Data Q2 2014, Dell CSB growth vs industry in PC Client Market Rev-enue, Dell CSB is 64.4% vs Industry at 59%, Dell Consumer is 51.8% vs Industry at 46.8%, and Dell Small Business is 12.5% vs industry at 12.2%.

In addition, Mobile Speciality Stores, which sell Tablets along with thin clients, is fast emerging as another priority area for Dell. “We are having sep-arate channel team to focus on the mobile special-ity stores. Earlier, it was not a major focus area for us but now we are working to appoint distributors in cities. So that’s a new development from a chan-nel point of view,” adds Krishnakumar. Though he could not give the number of stores they will be targeting but in terms of geographic presence are looking at top 30 cities.

There are five routes through which customers can buy Dell products: through Dell exclusive stores which number more than 250 in to 140 cities and will expand to 400 by the end of this year; multi-brand outlets; LFRs like Reliance and Croma stores; online like computer.com; and ecommerce partners.

“Want to ensure that our partners have the entire portfolio to meet the end- customers’ needs and they are able to make money out of the busi-ness,” Krishnakumar says, “and are profitable. With the low PC penetration channel plays an important role in expanding the IT penetration.”

Today, Dell works with close to five digit part-ners across 1000 plus cities in terms of its distri-bution reach and with the main goal of driving the small business it’s working with close to 600 partners in 300 cities. Krishnakumar informs they have done extensive training program for the 600 partners and not just for the owners. All the 600 partners have been trained to understand the customers’ requirements. “In the last four months

PUSHING MOBILITY

we have covered close to 40 cities for the end-customer segment and customer connect with the SB events. We ran it in March and will run it in September again.”

There are plans to increase the number of partners but only where they are underserved like from tier 3 to tier 5 cities. Plans are to increase the business in close to 1500 cities (from the earlier 10000) on the consumer side and 1000 (earlier 300) cities in small business side by the end of the year.

In WLAN market in India Q1, 2014 TP-LINK commanded a market-share of 9%, and to further strengthen its base it recently opened offices in Mumbai and Delhi.

BILL YE, DIRECTOR & COUNTRY MANAGER, TP-LINK INDIA & ATUL JAIN, VP-CHANNEL SALES

“WE WANTED TO GIVE THE CHANNEL AND OUR CUSTOMER NOT ONLY CONFIDENCE TO DO BUSINESS WITH US BUT ALSO ENSURE HASSLE FREE OPERATION OF OUR PRODUCTS”

The speed with which data today is being churned out, the wider accep-tance of 3rd platform, and consumer demands are driving the network

market in India. According to IDC forecast for India traffic offloading is rising due to the increas-ing popularity of data-guzzling applications and existing strained network infrastructure. With the new government in place, the public hotspots projects, announcements in the budget and pro-investment environment are likely to positively impact the networking market in the foreseeable future.

In the same report Q1 2014 WLAN India market was pegged at USD 35.9 million and despite its lean performance in the earlier quarters it has pegged LAN & WLAN markets in India in a strong position for the upcoming quarters. In WLAN market in India Q1, 2014 TP-LINK commanded a market-share of 9% a little ahead than some of the known vendors in the market. The networking company which started its India business in 2005, with the opening of its first office in 2010 is consolidating its position in the market with the inauguration of its offices in Mumbai and Delhi recently.

The offices it says will help more numbers of its distributors, retailers and customers to reach to TP-LINK India with ease and make business activities more dynamic.

“Channel has an important place for us. Open-ing of these offices is just one of the steps that we have taken for the Asia market. We wanted to give the channel and our customer not only confidence to do business with us but also ensure hassle free

operation of our products through best service support. This will also give them easy access to the place. It will also lead better communication as now they can come directly to us if they have any complaints,” informs Bill Ye, Director & Country Manager, TP-LINK India.

Their expansion mode won’t stop as they plan in investing more in opening such offices in other parts of the country.

Apart from investing in office infrastructure, investments are also being made to strengthen its sales infrastructures and increasing the man-power which today stands at 50 plus which it plans to increase to close to 100.

Ye stresses their focus is not only on to bring good quality product based on product design, research, manufacturing, but also to offer it at a very cost effective rate. With this they want to present to its consumers products at competitive price to bring value to their money.

The Company’s sales volume has jumped from 1.4 million USD in 2010 to Rs. 110 crore in 2013. Its main target verticals are mainly SoHo and home users, with 90% of its products going into home users. However, in the coming times SMB/SMEs too will become a major focus areas for TP-LINK.

“We have focus on consumer and SoHo but if I divide it segment wise consumer and SoHo is the first segment followed by SMB/SME and enterprise. We are not present in the last category. Out of SME and SMB we are going to have more focus on SMB but we will have switches which will complement the SME too,” adds Atul Jain, VP-Channel Sales, TP-LINK India.

MAKING A STEADY PROGRESS

Its Jet Stream switch is one of such product aimed at the SME segment. Globally launched in Poland and is available in India too, but hasn’t been announced officially as it has yet to build its SME Community, the partner base informs Jain. And has plans to do the same in the next financial year. “The moment we are ready with our SME community we will channelize the product into that market.”

Currently, they are in search for the right dis-tributor who can align with their SME product but their current distributors too are given a chance to push their SME products. Following a regional distribution model they have 60 such partners.

Expecting at least 30% growth this year Jain concludes, “We want to have TP-LINK routers in every home.”

Just four months old in India F-Secure is aggressively looking at driving its growth in India through channels to expand its business footprint.

AMIT NATH COUNTRY MANAGER, INDIA & SAARC, F-SECURE

“WE WANT TO CHANGE THE BUYING BEHAVIOUR OF CUSTOMERS FROM CAPEX TO OPEX; RIGHT NOW 90% ARE ON CAPEX.”

According to Gartner (2013) cloud-based security services market will rise to $3.1 billion in 2015. It further predicted that that the top three

most sought-after cloud services moving forward will remain email security, web security services and identity and access management (IAM). Within the IAM space, interest in cloud-based security has been driven mostly by SMBs’ needs to extend their basic IAM functions and serve employees who are accessing SaaS and some inter-nal web-architected applications.

With the rapid transformation of traditional business delivery by cloud based delivery F-Secure says it’s well positioned to grab the opportunity in the booming cloud market and is gearing focus towards providing security-as-a-service for the enterprise community in India. “We are good in email security and great in antivirus and now we want to take positioning in security-as-a- service,” informs Amit Nath, Country Manager, India & SAARC, F-Secure . “We want to change the buying behaviour of customers from CapEx to OpEx; right now 90% are on CapEx,” Nath adds.

Relatively new in India F-Secure is aggressively eyeing the market. “The India security market is worth $200 million. We are betting big on Corpo-rates here and want to grow in multiples. We have already done three to four large end-point deals and want to rope in 20-15 big customers before we get a new national distributor which will happen

not before 2015,” says Nath. The security company is aggressively looking at

driving its growth in India through channels and bring in innovative business model to build a great channel ecosystem. As a 100% channel driven company it plans to take the number of channel partners from the present 272 to 500 by the end of this year. “We not only offer great channel experi-ence but are also investing money,” informs Nath.

While it follows national distribution model Nath hinted that down the line it might adopt the regional distribution model later.

Recently F-Secure released its latest threat report (F-Secure H1, Threat Report 2014) which revealed India is not only a center for botnets (as bot infecting viruses like Ramnit and Sality are rampant) but also ranks 4th in the world in Mobile Malware: New Delhi has the highest number of SMS sending mobile malware. This has been revealed by a report by F-Secure H1, Threat Report 2014.

It further listed the Top 5 Most Infected Indian Cities as Chandigarh followed by Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and New Delhi. This trend further shows how Tier-2 cities becoming favorite destination for Mobile malwares.

The Finnish company which started its India operations four months back is aggressively mapping the mobile landscape in India and beyond with increasing malware in Android Platform.
