MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear St. Agnes School Parents, I am happy to announce that we now have a Music teacher who will begin position on Monday, September 26th. Special thanks to Christa and Nathan Zak who let a piano teacher that they have for Natalie know of our open position. She responded immediately with her resume and an email. I interviewed her on the afternoon of Grandparents’ day and offered her the position after the interview. She asked for the weekend to pray about it and called Monday to accept. Our new Music teacher is Deborah Ferguson. Ms. Ferguson has a BS in Contemporary Christian Music, a masters in Elementary Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and is certified as a teacher. Classes will begin the week of October 3rd. The first week will be spent meeting everyone and working with the new music curriculum. A special welcome to Ms. Ferguson! Tonight is our Parents’ Club Back to School Cook Out! I look forward to seeing many of you and your family this evening. We will begin at 6:00 p.m. behind the school. Hamburgers, brats and hot dogs, provided by Jim Mizeur, with families bringing a food choice to share will make for a great variety of food. This evening provides a chance for you to greet other St. Agnes School families and welcome those who are new to our school. Enjoy a fun and relaxing evening. You won’t want to miss it! Students have no homework this evening due to the Iowa Assessment week. They will be able to enjoy the basketball court and the playground areas. In case of rain, we will move inside to the cafeteria and gym. On Tuesday of next week, our Springfield Area Principals will be meeting here at St. Agnes for the first of the monthly meetings that we have throughout the year. We gather monthly as principals to discuss Catholic identity, curriculum, marketing our schools, shared activities and the daily operation of our schools. The shared activities this year include:

Third Graders in Faith Day at Little Flower - Friday, January 27 Fourth graders attending the Mission Mass at the Cathedral - Wednesday,

October 5 Fifth graders doing service at St. Joseph Home - Friday, November 18 Six graders celebrating National School Choice at Christ the King –

Tuesday, Jan. 24 Seventh graders sharing a retreat day organized by the Diocese on

Thursday, Nov. 10 The first Technology meeting for this school year will meet next Wednesday, September 21st, in the school office area. This meeting is a week earlier than indicated on the school calendar. A first planning meeting for the Parish and school Gala will be held on Wednesday, September 28th in the school library. If you signed up on the school volunteer list for either of these committees, please plan to join us for these meetings. Soon, I will be visiting the Jr. High students to give them information about this year’s Student Council elections. Eighth graders run for the officer positions and seventh or eighth graders may run for the three commissioner positions: Spirit, Christian Action or Service. Two students campaign together for the commissioners positions. Applications are due on Friday, September 30th. Campaigning can be done the week of October 3rd with speeches and elections to follow on Friday, October 7th. Students in grades 3-6 may serve as class representatives. These

students give short presentations in their classrooms and a drawing is held with the names of all who would like to serve on the Student Council. Jr. High class representatives are elected. Representatives for the lower classes are chosen from those who run in the election. The M.A.G.I.C. Match committee will meet next Thursday at noon. Thank you to the parents and businesses who have already responded to requests to be a partner for one of our classrooms or programs during the school year. This M.A.G.I.C. Match program matches a sponsor with each classroom (PreK-8) and special programs including: art, computer, counseling, library, music, P.E., Resource, Spanish and Speech & Language as well as cafeteria and maintenance when possible. Those who share in this partnership will hear from the class throughout the year. You are invited to stop in and visit the class so the students and teacher can thank you. This program allows us to purchase current educational materials for instruction and provide a variety of class experiences. Although the full sponsorship is $50 a month for a total of $500.00 you can also be an alternative sponsor and contribute to a special “wish list” need. Thank you for your generosity to our children! Many have already responded to this program. Please be aware that many businesses match employee donations. When you make a donation to the school through the Annual Fund or the Magic-Match program, some businesses, when you are an employee or retired employee, will match that donation. Please check to see if your company participates in this way. Some of our families already use this process. We are grateful! Room parents will be receiving a letter next week and a list of this year’s Room Parents. There are, ordinarily, two Room parents for each room for grades K-6 who will be the contact parents with the teacher for planning parties and activities. The room parents were chosen by teachers from the names received on the volunteer sheets at the August Orientation Day or at the invitation of the teacher. Grades seven and eight have more room parents as the activities required at these levels are more than classroom parties. The designated room parents will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27th, for an organizational meeting in the school cafeteria. Faith Reflection: Taken from A Year of Spiritual Companionship

How often do you hear yourself saying one of these phrases? “I can’t catch my breath.” “I need to take a breather.” “My schedule is suffocating.” “I want some breathing room.” We are unwittingly acknowledging the close connection between our breath and our spirit. Simply taking a deep breath can bring awareness and attention to the here and now, connecting our spirit to inner peace and calm, even in the busiest days.

“Every breath we draw is a gift…Every moment of existence is a grace. -Thomas Merton Gratefully, Sr. Joan

GRADE K We were very proud of the Kindergarten kids for performing at church on Grandparents Day. They were very cute! This week we are working on letter F and sharing stories about friends and family. We will do fun activities with frogs and learn more about firemen and fire safety. We are fantastic! REDIKER PARENT PORTALS Earlier this week parents were emailed their individual activation information for the Rediker Parent Portals. This Parent Portal will let you view your child’s grade progress, homework assignments, calendar events and much more. All of us are learning together so please be patient in viewing information on your portal! If you did not get the email or mistakenly deleted it, please let Karen White know in the school office or send an email to [email protected]

. Thank you to the parents who have logged in to their accounts already!
