PRESIDENT CHUCK WARD greeted us at Fratelli’s Italian Restaurant for an “away” Rotary social evening. We were served bruschetta appetizers, wine, salad, French bread, penne pasta with meat sauce, and penne pasta with creamy garlic sauce. The delicious meal was topped off by servings of spumoni ice cream. Did I mention there was wine? CHUCK said that a lot of the wine was compliments of DAVE SHORE, whose $100 donation the previous week in the auction for the Padres tickets, bought 4 of the bottles for us. Thank you, DAVE (and CHUCK).

In attendance were CHUCK AND BARBARA WARD, their daughter, TESS and her fiancée, ROSS NELSON, VICKIE and LLOYD PROSSER, A.J. MAZZARELLA, DAVE and TERRI HALL, SUSAN and GARY BROWN, PAM MYERS, MELISSA RODRIGUEZ, BOB and DARLENE PICKREL, RUDY and ELIZABETH VAN HUNNICK, RON MARBEN and ANCHISA FARRANT, JIM SCHRODER, DAVE NYDEGGER and his sweetie, MARTA HALL, LARRY HATTER, LOLA SHERMAN, and visitors, RUSS AND SHERRI CATEY, ANITA ROMAINE and your reporter, JAY CRAWFORD (28 in all).

We were welcomed by Fratelli’s owner, BRANDON, and he expressed his appreciation and honor to have us enjoy the evening at his establishment. PRESIDENT CHUCK then said he was $20 Happy that everyone was happy to be there. SUSAN BROWN was $20 Happy that her niece was recovering and fine after being hit by a car while riding her bicycle. VICKIE PROSSER was $5 Happy for an enjoyable family reunion in Oregon of members from all over the world, even though the skies were “smokey.” RUDY VAN HUNNICK was $40 Happy to be there. RUSS CATEY was $20 Happy to join us. JAY CRAWFORD was $10 Happy because PRESIDENT CHUCK had asked him earlier in the day to bring his guitar, but after practicing a few tunes at home, he put himself to sleep, and he didn’t want to do that to his fellow Rotarians. PRESIDENT CHUCK then announced we were going to have a Pictionary Challenge between the large table of guests and the small table of guests. Two easels with sketch pads were provided and each table had 60 seconds to name what was being represented.

The small table answers were Iron Man, then Bases Loaded, then Happy Dollars, and finally Gavel Grabber.

The large table answers were Hornblower, then Surf Board, then Shorelines, and finally Dining and Dancing. The times were recorded to name the answers and the both tables were declared winners. It was a delightful evening of food and drink, friendship, and fun with fellow Rotarians and guests. We all said we wanted more of these kinds of get-togethers in the future. And that’s the TRUTH!

ROTARIANS OUT AND ABOUT BILL DERN continues his globe-trotting, family-visiting adventures – This time with a trip to the Seattle area where they visited his son CHRIS’s family. While there, they celebrated the oldest grandchild’s birthday as IAN turned 15 years old. Plus some of the family checked out the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum. This is Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's personal collection of WWII aircraft, tanks, V2 rocker, helicopter, jets, etc. Most of the 7 or 8 WWII aircraft on display still fly. They made sure to get a photo of the Mitchell B25 bomber exhibit, because it was the type of plane that BILL’s dad flew.
