Fr. Lou Franz, CM Memorial Mass, Saturday June 6, 2018 at 10 am (St. Joseph Church) part 1

Father Lou was born in New Orleans, LA on July 27, 1931 to Hilda (Trege) and Valentine Franz, Jr. He was educated at St. Stephen Elementary, a Vincentian parish in their school which was staffed by Daughters of Charity. He attended St. Vincent’s College, Cape Girardeau, MO and entered the novitiate on May 23, 1948. He took his vows on May 23, 1950. He completed his philosophy and theology at St. Mary’s of the Barrens, Perryville, MO and was ordained on June 2, 1957.

In the 1950’s, the Congregation staffed many seminaries and was always in need of more faculty. Father Lou began his teach-ing ministry at Regina Cleri Seminary, the minor seminary for the diocese of Tucson, AZ. He also served as rector and/or on the faculty of the following institutions: St. Vincent’s Seminary, Montebello, CA; St. John’s College Seminary, Camarillo, CA; St. Mary’s Seminary, Perryville; and St. Mary’s Seminary, Houston, TX. He had a great love for literature and taught it often. He studied English literature at St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO and received his master’s degree in 1959 and a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, in 1966.

In 1973, he was elected vice-provincial of the then New Orleans Vice-Province. In 1975 the Western region was divided into three autonomous provinces, and he became the provincial of the then Southern Province. Growing up in a house where your dad runs a grocery store gave Father Lou a growing sense of business, investments and how to manage money well. As the first provincial of a new province, he used his knowledge so that the Southern Province could have a healthy start and continuing financial stability. After the Constitutions of the CM were renewed in 1981, he laid the foundations that allowed the Southern Province to become more involved in evangelizing those in need and to be more proactive in starting new apostolic ministries with a missionary focus.

PARISH CALENDAR

23 Sept. Sunday, Children’s Liturgy 10 am & 8:30 pm

23 Sept. Sunday, Feast of St. Vincent (Reception after 10 am Mass)

LISTENING AND RESPONDING

There are three interwoven themes in today’s read-ings: listening to God, faith vs. good works, and losing our life in order to find it. How are they related?

The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much dis-tress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has lis-tened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God.

God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don’t always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willing-ness to listen to God’s promptings will lead us in the right way.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — The Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong? (Isaiah 50:5-9a). Psalm — I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116). Second Reading — Faith, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:14-18). Gospel — Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:27-35).

Pope Francis’ September Intention

That young people in Africa may have access to education and work in their own countries.
