WELCOME!

We at Dripping Springs High School are proud to welcome you back to the 12th Annual Dripping Springs Thunder in the Hills Percussion Invitational! To the competing units and directors in attendance today, I would like to gratefully thank you for continuing to support this activity through your participation, dedication, and hard work. After an extremely difficult 2020 we are excited to be back together in celebration of these amazing students and the marching percussion art form.

We have 28 incredibly talented percussion units from across central Texas converging to compete for class ranking and caption awards. We are pleased to be able to bring four world-class adjudicators in from all across the U.S. to give valuable educational feedback and commentary to the participants and their directors. Be sure to check the contest schedule on the following pages to ensure that you don’t miss your favorite performers!

The concession stands will be open all day offering cold drinks, snacks, and full meals to all spectators and participants. Be sure to visit the souvenir booth to purchase this year’s Thunder in the Hills t-shirt. Directors can find a moment of peace in the Director’s Hospitality room located in the press box at Tiger Stadium.

I would like to acknowledge how incredible our parents, students, and volunteers have been in coordinating and executing this event. If not for their late nights, thoughtful consideration, and relentless organization of all of the logistics involved, we would not be able to host this event year after year. I would also like to thank our generous sponsors for their contributions and support. Without their help, it would be impossible to host a contest of this size and scope.

Please consider reaching out or visiting these businesses while in town and be sure to let them know that Thunder in the Hills sent you! We are glad that you have decided to make Thunder in the Hills a part of your Fall marching experience.

Best of luck to everyone performing, and let the THUNDER begin!

Linda McDavitt was director of bands at Dripping Springs from 1978-1984. Being the only director for 6th-12th grade band Linda felt like this is where she really became her own as a teacher. During McDavitt's six years at Dripping Springs she led them to be state finalists in both UIL Marching Band and UIL Honor Band contests. She was amazed by the work ethic of the Dripping kids and helped to lay a foundation that would serve the program well to this day. Linda had an incredibly successful teaching career and was named to the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame in 2012. On top of teaching Linda has been an active percussion performer throughout her lifetime. She has performed regularly with the Austin Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Charlotte Opera, The Austin Symphonic Band, and Inside Out Steel Band. After retiring in 2001 she began to run the Genevieve and Ward Orsinger Foundation founded by her aunt. The Foundation reflects the philosophy of the Orsingers. It helps give people the tools to become educat-ed, healthy, and self-reliant by making grants in the areas of Cultural Enrichment, Education and Human Services. The Foundation supports organizations and institutions in Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Hays, Kendall and Travis Counties. Linda even found time to be a competitive sailor throughout her lifetime and in 2015 at the age of 69 she was on a team that competed in The Clipper Around The World Race. This race helps to raise money for UNICEF and takes a full year to complete! Thunder In The Hills is honored to start "The McDavitt Drum" award. This award will be presented to the group with the highest overall score regardless of division and it will be a traveling trophy with each year's winner being engraved on a nameplate on the base of the trophy. Linda has helped to make our world a better place through her amazing work as an educator and her time leading a non-profit. And to top it off she's a percussionist! We hope this award can embody some of her amazing spirit and energy for percus-sion and life.
