  • This weekend is Seminarian Appeal weekend. Fr. John Kartje, the rector of Mun-delein Seminary has a word for us: “I am grateful for your support of the Seminar-ian Appeal, which is a major source of funding for our ministry of priestly for-mation in the Archdiocese of Chicago. The Appeal supports not only Mundelein Seminary, but also our college seminarians who now study at St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul, MN. I’m happy to report that the collegians’ num-

ber almost doubled since last year!” We are blessed this year to have a new seminarian, Marko Culjak, who is in his first year of theology at Mundelein and is studying for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Marko is excited to help in the reli-gious education program and will/has shared his vocation story this weekend. Matthew Newland from Seattle is on a pastoral year in his diocese, so we won’t be seeing him this year. Please pray for them both as they seek to follow Christ. “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few, so ask the Master of the harvest to send out laborers to his harvest.” While we pray for the labors of priests and religious sisters in the Church, we are all meant to be la-borers in the Lord’s vineyard. That was the theme from this weekend’s Gospel, the parable of the late workers who still received the daily wage that the laborers received who bore the day’s burden and heat. To the people at the time, this parable would in part teach that salvation was meant not just for the Jewish people but for all people, even the newcomers, the Gentiles. The parable also reveals to us that Christ calls all people to faith and conversion even until the moment of death and that we should want their salvation too. To hear the Lord’s call and serve in His vineyard is a gift of grace. Jesus makes clear that whether one is “first” to hear the call like the Jewish people or a Gentile convert to the Church then, or even the “last” people today who convert right before death, all can die in His grace, be purified and enter heaven. Our sense of justice is somewhat challenged by this parable because at face value, it does seem like the early workers aren’t being treated fairly and we identify with them. On a spiritual and moral level a Catholic might grumble, “I’ve believed in Jesus and tried to follow the commandments and Church’s teachings while these others get to commit whatever sins they want and all they have to do is say ‘sorry’ before they die and they go to heaven too!” I’m sure we’ve all felt this way at some point, but it does reveal that we still wrongly envy the sinner their sin. God knows the horror and evil of sin vs. the goodness of His own will and commands so He warns in our first reading “Let the scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked his thoughts.” But it’s also good to be reminded that we should not presume that we are the early laborers. Have we real-ly borne the day’s burden as fully as we could have? We should be glad of the Lord’s mercy to the late workers because our hearts may not have been truly with Christ until the twilight of our lives. We can all say like St. Augustine “late have I loved You O Lord, late have I loved you O beauty ever ancient ever new.” In Christ, Fr. Mike

St. Elizabeth Parishioners, We are in our 4th week of in-person school and I am loving every minute! We have 196 students registered this year, with 174 passing through our doors each day, and 22 participating in remote learning. Our students have their temperatures taken each morning, hand sanitize constantly and wear masks with pride. I am so proud of all our students and staff and how they have adjusted to our guidelines. Underneath their masks, I know they are smiling. If you have not liked our Facebook page, please do so. (St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish). You will be able to see all that is happening during our school day among all our classes. Below are some photos of students eating lunch, and outside, socially distanced of course! Please feel free to reach out to me if you ever have any questions. Kristine Hillmann, Ed.D Principal

  • GET TO KNOW OUR PARISH STAFF - DEACON JOHN ROTTMAN

I’m 72 years young, having worked as a Journeyman Plumber and now a proud re-tired member of 47 years in Plumbers Local Union #130. In 2002, after completing four years of Diaconate Formation, I was ordained a deacon by Francis Cardinal George having served at both St. Thecla and St. Cornelius Parishes these 18 years. My late wife Candace and I were married at St. Thecla Church, May 27th 1973. We

gave birth to four children. Three sons: Timothy C.F.D., Michael C.F.D., John C.P.D. and our daughter Kathleen employed by the State of Illinois working for the State Representative. My wife Candace and my younger sister Nancy attended and graduated together from St. Tarcissus School. They were life-long friends and my sister became the match-maker who re-introduced me to Can-dace back in 1971. The rest fills a life-time of family, friends and great memories that spanned 45 years. In May of 2016 my wife began her second and final fight with cancer and God called the love of my life home to Heaven, October 24th 2016. Needless to say, my life goes on, but the loss of that love never leaves one completely, as so many of you have experienced. Candace attended the Diaconate Formation Program with me and supported my call to serve as a perma-nent deacon here in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We were a great team together working in several posi-tions as staff members at St. Thecla Church and School. As a deacon I’ve served the Archdiocese of Chi-cago outside the parish in a variety of ministries. I was a Field Advocate for the Matrimonial Tribunal of the Archdiocese for 12 years of my ministry. I volunteered as Prison Chaplain at the Cook County Jail for the first five years of my diaconate. My wife and I both volunteered and assisted in the opening of The Kolbe House, a ministerial program for men leaving prison and transitioning to home, family and job op-portunities. This ministry concluded in 2008. In parish life, Candace and I assisted in several Sacramental preparation classes for R.C.I.A and R.C.I.C. Programs as well as Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation classes. At St. Cornelius we vol-unteered as Food Pantry helpers. I enjoy 9 holes of golf but walking nine takes a lot more effort these days. And YES, a few cold beers taste that much better back at the club house. In closing I’ll pray for our parish family and I ask for your prayers as well. I look forward to the many par-ish events be they spiritual, educational or social that fulfill the mission of Christ and the Church.

God Bless + KATHLEEN DRISCOLL I’m Ms. Kathleen Driscoll, the new Director of Children’s Faith Formation at St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish. I come to St. Elizabeth with a BA in Elementary Education and an M.Ed. in Cur-riculum and Instruction. In my over twenty years of experience in education, I have taught multiple grade levels, most recently middle school language arts and reli-

gion. I was also the assistant director of my parish’s Religious Education Program for three years. I grew up on the south side of the city (Go Sox!) and have lived in Chicago my entire life. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my nieces and nephews and my dog Stella. I’m very excited for school and religious ed to begin and I can’t wait to meet all of you!
