Breaking the Bonsai Mentality! (Or more simply known as….running my first 8 miler)

LGRAW has some of the most energetic, friendly, helpful people that I know. Since recently joining the club, I have run a few 5-mile loops. Each time, there has been someone who has taken the time to run with me, for which I am grateful. I have been honored that these “marathon” type people not only run beside me, but also keep me enthralled with their answers to my questions. They are certainly inspirations. Two Saturdays ago, I ran my first 8-mile distance out at LGRAW. Marty Metzger enthusiastically helped me to break the “Bonsai” mentality. In case you are wondering what

this is… Marty and I chatted about how we confine our abilities inside pots, just like the Bonsai tree. We ought to continually transplant ourselves into bigger pots to allow room for growth. I broke the 5-mile pot that day, and traded it for an 8-mile one, where I reside, at least for now. THANK YOU to each of you out there, who love running and help others get addicted to the sport. Whether by helping at races, giving a smile, supplying our water, or doing the admin, you’re all terrific! P.S. If you want to know more about this Bonsai Mentality – ask my friend Andy at Andy Hickman.com.

Congratulations Jeff and

Melanie!

Jeff Brown and Melanie Davies met in July of last year—running at the Rec center. It was a month before they dated, but when they did, they really clicked....and the rest is history. They were married in Hurst July 31, with Jeff’s daughter Caroline (13) and Melanie’s daughter Emily (8) looking on. Jeff and Melanie plan to honeymoon in Kauai in November.

Jeff was obviously eager for this wedding, as he got the first speeding ticket that he’s had in a decade, while racing to get to the courthouse on time!

Fourth of July BBQ and Fireworks Are a Real Blast!

There was a great turnout at the RAW Clubhouse for the 4th of July barbeque. We lost count when we reached 60, which is easy to do with a moving target! We tried the old method of counting legs and dividing by two, but that didn’t work either. There were club members all over the place—in front, in back, and inside (but none on the roof that we know of). There were two cookers going at full speed, and 20 feet of tables filled with side dishes. Once everyone was fed, we settled in and watched the fireworks show (30 minutes) over Lake Grapevine. Then we watched the traffic flowing south on Dove Loop (90 minutes). It wasn’t a problem for RAW however, as there were plenty of soft drinks and beer to help pass the time. The heat limited the number of runners in the 5K fun run, but the eight souls that had the fortitude to run had a great time. They were: Dave Ford (25:16), Dave Aungst (25:49), Roy Lange (28:09), Courtney Noell (28:49), Doug Noell (28:51), Lee Miller (28:33), Melinda Ashley (36:00), and Pat Noell (55:18).

Oh, say, can we see? The short straw has to cook.

Soup’s on! The one I caught was this big.

Marathon Report LGRAW continues to be well represented at marathons across the country. Alison Repass and Jon Korte ran the Suzuki Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego on June 4th. Alison ran an excellent 4:20:04 (chip time) marathon. Jon, who was running his first marathon, finished 15th in his age g r o u p w i t h a 2 : 5 7 : 2 0 ! Congratulations to both these runners! Kelly Sizelove, (K1), ran the Steamboat Springs marathon, also on June 4th. Unfortunately, she fell on some gravel five minutes before the start and sprained her big toe, but still managed a time of 4:20. Kelly reports that Steamboat Springs was beautiful, with friendly people and a well-organized marathon. The weather, along with the 8100 ft altitude, presented some challenges, as it was 85 degrees and there was no shade. Despite some setbacks, it was a good day for K1. We’re proud of a l l our marathoners, and look forward to hearing from more of you!

RAW Members On the Go!

RAW members enjoy the balmy Texas weather at the July 21st Happy Hour at Scott’s Landing. The MixMasters (Barbara Martin, Kandy Kobar, and Tia Metzger) ensure that we have an opportunity to get together each month to get to know one another in a relaxed setting. Check your RAW calendar for the next Happy Hour.

New RAW member Paige Fontaine Junker finishes her first race with proud grandparents Richard and Eileen Fontaine. It was the “Get In Gear” race in Minnesota (the end of April—I think it was about 104 that day in Dallas), so there’s no need to jump to the conclusion that Paige is sweltering!

What a fine looking group of svelte, well-conditioned athletes! This is a typical weekend morning at the clubhouse, before the thundering herd begins their tour of the trails.

This, on the other hand, is the tired, but well-satisfied group relaxing after they’ve completed their endeavors. Is Jack holding up the Clubhouse with that post?

On Saturday morning, September 23rd, LGRAW will be having another fun run and breakfast at the Clubhouse—the Duct Tape Duet and Pancake Breakfast. The fun run is a team event; one person runs the 10K while their partner walks the 5K. Everyone starts at the same time, 8:00 am. The “catch” is that both team members must cross the finish line together. There will be awards and prizes! Following the run/walk we’ll be cooking pancakes for breakfast. Please bring something to share; there is a sign up list at the clubhouse. The event is free to members, so come on out and meet your fellow club members.

RAW Goes to the Races

RAW!!! RAW!!! RAW!!! RAW!!! This is what you’ll hear as you cross the finish line if you join us at selected upcoming races. RAW members – walkers, runners and supporters! – are planning on attending the following races as a group:

Saturday, September 2nd Harris Methodist HEB 10K & 5K Saturday, September 16th Southlake Stampede 5K Suggested Attire: RAW Wear (or something purple)

Look for our table where we’ll have our banner, membership brochures, upcoming RAW race flyers to distribute, and someone to watch your ‘stuff’ while you are running. Help us promote RAW, our October race – the DOUBLE TROUBLE 5K & 10K, cheer on your fellow RAW members and have a great time! Contact Joe or Evelyn Luccioni @ [email protected] , John Bush @ [email protected] or Barbara Martin @ [email protected] for more information.

Will Run For Food The Tom Thumb Good Neighbor program is paying off. Thanks to those RAW members who linked their Reward Card to RAW we received our first check - $90.53! Not bad considering we advertised the program for the first time in the March Footprint. For those of you who didn’t read that scintillating article, here’s the scoop. Tom Thumb will donate 1% of your purchase dollars to LGRAW when you use your Reward Card. All you have to do is ask to have your card linked to our number – 8637. Now if we could only get the 1% on beer…

Weekend Workouts – Did you know…

…that from July 22nd to August 20th we had 340 RAW members at the clubhouse for our Saturday and Sunday informal workouts! That’s an average turnout of 34 runners and walkers each of those days. AWESOME!!! Plus, these 340 members covered 2530 miles. We’re 1/10 of the way around the world! These weekend warriors have an interesting profile. Lest you think our club is made up of only those who run long and fast, look at these results – taken from the sign-in sheets that we collect following each weekend workout. Date Walkers Total Runners (by # of miles run) 1-4 miles 5-6 miles 7-10 miles Over 10 miles 7/22 3 4 13 9 1 7/23 6 1 11 9 5 7/29 6 1 12 16 1 7/30 5 4 6 5 6 8/05 3 7 8 13 6 8/06 6 3 7 10 9 8/12 7 2 7 16 7 8/13 9 1 7 10 8 8/19 9 6 12 14 9 8/20 6 - 7 1 5 The W in RAW is becoming more apparent. Plus, if you look at these breakdowns as a percentage of the total, 17% are walkers, 35% run 6 miles or less, 30% run 7 to 10 miles, and 16% run over 10 miles. We are well represented on both ends of the spectrum. LGRAW is a club for all abilities of runners and walkers, so come on out and join us on Saturday or Sunday morning. There will be someone there just waiting to walk or run with you!

LGRAW Long Training Runs

So… you’re going to run the D a l l a s W h i t e R o c k Marathon! A key component to your marathon training is building mileage. This you do in two ways – by increasing your weekly mileage and by increasing the length of each week’s longest run. While long runs are meditative, talking to yourself for 3 or 4 hours can be too much of a good thing. A great way to break out of the long run doldrums is to run in a group. To help with this the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers Club is going to hold a series of long training runs. These events will feature mile markers, water stations, bananas and bagels for refueling at the clubhouse, and exceptionally good company. Mark your calendar for these upcoming group long runs: Sunday, October 22nd 16 – 18 miles Sunday, November 5th 18 – 20 miles Sunday November 19 20 – 22 miles There will be sign-up sheets posted at the clubhouse for members to post the distance they will run and their expected pace. There is sure to be a group that you will want to run with. Let’s keep each other entertained!

RUN YOUR NEXT MARATHON FOR MONEY

Running a marathon for most of us is tough, serious business. It takes all we've got to go the 26.2 miles. Afterwards there is a deep sense of accomplishment. However, there is an even deeper sense of satisfaction when you turn your marathon into a way to help others. For the past two years, I've run marathons with my friends and family pledging my miles to "Burn Camp", an annual 5-day summer camp put on for the Pediatric Burn Unit at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Every year, medical volunteers from Parkland's Burn Unit take a week's vacation to take their patients to a place where they can just be kids. Away from the stares and painful treatments, they are regular kids doing all the regular camp activities. Living in special camp quarters (near Clebourne, TX) under medical supervision, these campers swim, hike, fish, play basketball, baseball, do crafts, paint, sing songs and even dance. I observed what these kids accomplish in one week, and was astounded by their courage. This is where YOU come in. We need more runners. Whether you decide to run for this cause, or for another that has touched your life, I would love to help you organize the fund-raising effort. Burn Camp, my chosen charity, is NOT funded by Parkland Hospital or Dallas County. It is only funded by private donations. A good portion of these patients' families lack the financial resources to afford the camp which costs approximately $400 per child (medical bills add up to astronomical sums, even with insurance). Would you consider pledging miles by your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers in your next marathon to help these kids, or other people in need? I have worked out an easy system of signing up people, and will customize your pledge sheets to help you raise the money for your particular charity and marathon. I promise that running for this "higher purpose" can actually get you through mile 20 - 26 stronger because you're helping someone who can’t be there to run. Not to mention the on-going payoff in knowing deep in your heart that you've helped someone get an opportunity he/she might not get otherwise. Your finisher's medal will definitely have a bigger meaning long after your race... I guarantee it, because you'll be a hero to some great folks. Please contact me by phone or email if you are interested in setting up a program. And of course, I’d love to have your help in supporting the kids at Burn Camp. Look for the sign-up sheet I’ve posted at the clubhouse. Together, our running donations can help some great kids. Thank you so much. David Ball phone: 817.481.4326 email: [email protected]

Overheard on the RAW Bulletin

Board

Marty Metzger: How fast do I have to run the 5K to burn off the free pancake breakfast? Terry Marcott: Well, Marty, if you run all out you might burn 600 calories, which would allow you to drink one glass of orange juice and eat about three pancakes with no butter and no syrup. Where is the justice?
