I hope all is well -- I’m so glad football season is here! As summer leaves us and the cool weather gusts in, Elevate Lifestyle is bringing you our annual Fall Fashion Issue. This issue is packed full of the hottest looks from the best boutiques, new trends from local designers, and even throw-back styles from true vintage shops. We also have the 411 on make-up styles, and how to choose the fragrance that is right for you.

So as we unveil this year’s Fashion Issue, what better time to launch our search for the Elevate Cover Girl 2010. So ladies, if you think you have the look, e-mail us at [email protected]. The winner will be on the cover of our seventh anniversary issue in November, and will also receive an Elevate Lifestyle prize package and maybe a couple other surprises along the way.

So now with the heat gone, it’s time for some fun. Elevate Lifestyle has some great events coming up. We’re getting things started at Cosmos on Sept. 24 with a “Friday Happy Hour,” then we keep things going on Monday, Sept. 27 with our annual golf tournament, Chipping In Fore Charity Golf Classic. That following Wednesday, Sept. 29, join us for our monthly “After Work Surrender,” when we take the Elevate Lounge on the road to Chima Brazilian Steakhouse. And then to kick off October, El-evate is hosting our fourth annual Pink Party at Mez on Saturday, Oct. 2. As always, you can stay up-to-date on these and other events at ElevateLifestyle.com. Have a great month, Steve

real beauty - makeup magicPopular makeup looks for 2010 include smoky eyes, red lips, col-orful eyeshadows and natural-looking makeup.

The natural look is all about flawless skin. So the only way to achieve it is to take care of your skin! To keep your skin looking its best, always use sunscreen, moisturizer and a concealer that matches your skin tone perfectly.

Smoky eyes create a dramatic sexy look that will work on the run-way as well as a night on the town. Add false lashes to create a look that really pops.

Simple yet glamorous red lips have been popular for decades now, and they have not lost any of their sexiness. The bold, red state-ment works perfectly with fair complexions as well as tanned skin.Heather Richardson of Tah Tah Cosmetics is a master at her craft. Yes, this is her very own makeup line. With a twist of Heather’s

magic wand (brushes and spong-es), any “Plain Jane” is transformed into a real beauty, with the added bonus of feeling empowered.

You know it when you look smok-ing hot, and it gives you that extra boost of confidence that makes you even sexier!

Heather has done makeup for tele-vision -- she’s the secret weapon on my TV show -- movies, videos and print; and she boasts a roster of clients that includes countless stars and celebrities. Having stud-ied at Joe Blasco’s Makeup Acad-emy in Hollywood -- arguably the best makeup school in the world -- Heather is undoubtedly one of the best makeup artists in Charlotte. Also gifted in the art of styling hair, Heather possesses the talent and skill to endow her clients with a full “magical makeover” as you will wit-ness in this editorial feature.

Join me for Charlotte Fashion Week as I host “Boutique Night,” on Thursday, Sept. 23 at the Bank of America Urban Garden, located at 150 N. College St. See you there!

feels like a chemical reactionAny true player knows a fragrance is essential to leaving a last-ing impression. Scientists will tell you that smell is the sense most often tied to human memory. Cologne or perfume is mandatory if your plan is to be unforgettable. But it is intimidating to walk through the fragrance aisle smelling flowers, food, plants and other exotic scents that you may or may not have ever experienced. And by the time you smell three or four, you can’t remember which one you liked or how it smells.

Although a fragrance is supposed to make you feel something, (i.e. pretty, sexy, fresh, etc.) there is a science behind it: a chemi-cal reaction. Scents have families: fresh, woody, floral, oriental, fougére (fern-like) and leather (the last two being found primarily in men’s fragrances).

Also known as citrus scents, fresh scents are meant to smell fresh (it may be science, but it’s not rocket science). Woody scents are

fashion

Page 89: September 2010

87

reminiscent of smells you might find in a forest. Floral scents, smell like (you guessed it!) flowers. Oriental scents fall into the category of “exotic,” and include spices, balsams, resins and amber. These are the scents meant for the evening.

Once you decide which type fits your personality, you need to pay attention to the notes – the top notes, middle notes and base notes. If you have ever heard someone say a fragrance smells different throughout the day, this is what they mean. Some scents don’t last very long, so they’re top notes. Some scents last forever -- they are the base notes. The ones in between are called the middle notes. If you spray on your cologne before work, you will smell a little different by the time you get there and get your coffee -- the top notes are preva-lent. By lunch time you’ll smell a little different – those will be the middle notes-- and by happy hour, the base notes come out to play. When choosing a fragrance, keep all of that in mind. You may want a scent that smells fresh in the morning, but by the end of the day morphs into something more exotic, like vanilla.

As you comb through the fragrance aisles, keep in mind the code words: true perfume, perfume extract, eau de parfum, eau de cologne, or eau de toilette. They are listed in order of strength. Keep in mind that eau is the French word for wa-ter, so eau de anything is a watered down version of the true perfume. Although the concentrated versions last longer, they cost more.

With that being said, your fragrance should incite emotion, whether it’s glee, romance, relaxation or sex (or a combination of all of those). You can use the various families and notes as a guide, but in the end, it is all about how the scent makes you feel. Flowers may make you feel sexy, while vanilla reminds you of your grandmother.

Page 90: September 2010

88

“Finding the perfect scent for your-self definitely comes from trial and error,” said Amelia Keith, of Char-lotte Pretty City. She advises us-ing store and magazine samples in the morning and checking the scent again in the afternoon and evening to see if you still like it. How does it make you feel throughout the day?

“Also, make sure you do not test many fragrances at once,” she said. Amelia explained that not only will the various scents give you a headache, but they can re-act with one another and be con-fusing.

Most importantly, have fun with it. “Spice it up a bit!” Amelia said. “Have something light for day time and sexy for evening.”

Remember, your fragrance is an accessory meant to enhance your style like a hat, scarf or funky piece of jewelry. Change it based on your mood, or have a reliable fragrance that always makes you feel comfortable and sexy.
