Hi everyone

What happened to Summer? I hope you all enjoyed your holidays and managed to find a bit of good weather. It’s back to school time as well, so I hope the kids are prepared. We are, at present, putting a new website together and it should be up and running soon. It will contain all the advertisers and articles from the magazines each month. We also want to include more articles and pictures showing events and news from the area so take a look when it’s online and please feel free to contact me with any contributions. We will also be on Facebook and Twitter. I’ll keep you all up to date with the progress.

Thanks and best wishes Trevor

#03 Rewards, Cashback & Stoozing

Money Saving Tips

The typical interest rate on the vast majority of credit cards is considerably higher than that of personal loans. Therefore it is not recommended that you use a credit card to borrow money. There is an exception... Whereas some credit cards offer cashback or rewards when you spend; others offer an introductory rate of 0%. By cleverly taking advantage of this in-troductory rate, you can often make more money from this type of card than through the best reward and cashback cards. Below, I have outlined the different types of credit card...

03.1 Cashback: It is exactly as it sounds. You get cashback equivalent to a given percent-age (eg. 0.5%, 2%...) of the amount you spend on the credit card each month. But here’s a few things to look out for when picking a cashback credit card... Cashback percentage: Some credit cards offer up to 5% cashback as an introductory rate, but you must always check what the rates are after introductory offers, to make a fair com-parison between cards. If you don’t plan to change your credit card every six months, a more consistent standard rate of cashback can often work out a better option. WARNING: Applying for credit cards has a small negative impact on your credit score. Limit credit card applications to a minimum, especially if you are going to be reliant on your credit rating for something important in the near future (eg. loan or mortgage). You should also be aware of other credit searches that can affect your credit score, these include, mobile phone contracts, car insurance, personal loans, and many more. Don’t be too worried though; the effect is only small and your credit rating will recover after a short period of time. It is pretty much acceptable to apply for a credit card every six months, although there is no hard and fast rule. T&Cs: Always read the terms and conditions of a credit card before applying. Some cards limit their advertised cashback to purchases less than a certain value, and may offer no cashback, or an inferior rate to everything over. Card Issuer: Most cards are issued by Mastercard and Visa, and are accepted by the vast majority of retailers and outlets, but some of the best deals are available through American Express, which is accepted by fewer stores. It is important to check that the card you apply for is accepted by the stores you spend in, and if not, you must be willing to use an alterna-tive card in these stores. You should also be aware of potential charges for using certain cards in certain stores (particularly with Amex).

03.2 Rewards: Rewards credit cards are probably the most popular option, as they are often widely available in the form of store cards. As with cashback credit cards, there are some things to look out for... Rewards percentage: Similar to cashback cards; rewards cards offer you a cashback per-centage, but in the form of points and vouchers. This allows the card provider to disguise the real value of the percentage. For example, a card may offer 100 points for every £1 you spend. This means on a £500 purchase, you would receive 50,000 points. It may sound good; until you realise you need 100,000 for a £1 store voucher. This equates to a 0.1% cashback amount; not so good. This is why you must always calculate the value of rewards. T&Cs: As with cashback cards, always read the terms and conditions to ensure that the card is what you are expecting. Also, ensure the card is accepted by places that you wish to use it.

To get the most out of any reward, cashback or stoozing credit card, switch all of the spending you can to it, even your direct debits, mortgage/rent

(where extra charges don’t apply), but watch out for your credit limit.

Page 7: September 2011

7

03.3 Stoozing: One of the most common ways for credit card companies to attract our attention is with 0% interest on purchases for an introductory period. Spending with a card like this, is essentially like getting an interest free loan; so if it is offered, why not take it. I am not endorsing irresponsible spending. The normal rule with credit cards is to pay them off every month in full, or even setup a direct debit to pay them off in full. However, when a card company is offering you interest free money, take advantage; simply change the way you pay off your credit card. Here is a step by step guide... 1. Apply for a 0% introductory rate credit card, with as many 0% months as possible, and the highest credit limit possible. 2. Setup the best regular savings account you can find (or maybe make use of an ISA), which allows you to save as much each month as you plan to spend on your new 0% credit card. 3. Switch all of the regular spending you can to your new credit card. 4. Instead of paying off the full balance of the bill each month, put that money into your regular savings account and make the minimum repayments on the card. 5. Watch out for your credit card limit, and stop spending if you reach it. 6. At the end of the 0% interest period of the credit card, you have two options:

Pay off the credit card in full, using the savings you have accrued, leaving you with the interest from the savings; your profit.

Transfer the balance of the card to another credit card which accepts 0% on balance transfers and with low transfer fees. Keep your savings ready to pay off the new credit card when the 0% period ends on that card.

WARNING: When transferring debt from one card to another, calculate the cost of moving the balance (transfer fee) and compare it to the interest on the savings you will accrue. Also, beware of spending on a card that you have transferred debt to. Read the terms and condi-tions of your card, or a mistake could mean you are forced to pay off the full balance of the debt to avoid charges, which would defeat the object of having the card in the first place.

Have a look at moneysupermarket.com/money to compare 0% credit cards and savings accounts.

GENERAL WARNING: You should only use credit cards for stoozing if you are well organised and can plan your fi-nances accordingly. Cashback and/or reward cards maybe a more suitable alternative, if you are worried you won’t be able to plan your savings to cover your spending. Although possessing multiple credit cards simultaneously can allow you to get as much cashback as possible; you should limit the number to as few as possible. Cancel any unused cards; as having more credit cards and a higher credit limit can damage your credit rating over time. Finally, don’t apply for credit card after credit card as soon as you are declined for one, space out applications.

When credit limits are restricting your stoozing, try using a combination of types of credit card to maximise your rewards. You may be able to make

£400 per year, just by changing the way you spend.

Vista Windows Charity Night.

A Fundraising Charity event to support Ward 75 Manchester Children’s Hospital was held on 23rd July at The Apple and Pear Pub in Alkrington. The evening raised a massive £3.300 from the sale of tickets for a delicious dinner and raffles, and the proceeds of informal auctions.

Vista Windows owner, Craig Wilkinson, is the Granddad of Jack Wilkinson age 7 months. When Jack was 3 months old he contracted Meningitis and was admitted to

Manchester Children’s Hospital for treatment. Jack’s life was in the balance at times but because of the care he received from all the skilled staff at the hospital he pulled through and is now a very happy 7 month old. Jack’s family would like to thank everyone who supported the fund- raising by giving time or financial support. A Big Thank You to :- The Apple and Pear for allowing us to use the room free of charge and decorating it beautifully. Andy Livesey for providing a disco and karaoke free of charge. The Round Table for provid-ing tables and chairs.

The evening began with a three course meal, followed by raffles and auction. Prizes were donated by United Trade Frames from Chadderton. Mayo Civil Engineering from Middleton. TLH Auctions from Roy-ton. The Norton Grange from Rochdale. Vision signs from Blackley. Acorn Glass from Littleborough and Stephen Stockton AKA Jobie. Many thanks to you all.

A massive Thank you to friends and family and everyone who participated in ensuring the success of the evening.

Stephen’s International DutyStephen’s International DutyStephen’s International Duty

After a tough selection process, Stephen Bradshaw (17) from Chadderton is on the verge of gaining his first international musical experience. Stephen has been chosen to represent the UK at the Commonwealth Heads of Govern-ment Conference in Perth, Western Australia , not on the sports field, but as a musician. He has been chosen to be part of The Commonwealth Resounds! an organisation dedicated to bringing together young musicians from across the Commonwealth. Violinist and composer Stephen, who is a student at Chetham’s School of Music, is one of only 14 young musicians from the UK who will be spending two and a half weeks in Australia working and teaching primary school chil-dren and developing partnerships with musicians from all over the world. There may even be opportunities to perform music for senior government representatives from all over the Commonwealth. Stephen is looking forward to the trip and is excited at the thought of performing on the international stage. He said: “It's the experi-ence of a lifetime to play music to such a wide audience and to Meet and share my music with people from all over the world. It'll be an honour to play and learn alongside other international standard musicians and composers”. Unlike many international sports stars Stephen has to find the money to pay for the trip himself. To raise the £2,500 he needs to pay for travel and accommodation he has been performing with fellow students at a number of concerts and is open to suggestions for fresh fundraising ideas to help him get to Perth. If you would like to see Stephen play you can catch him at Mills Hill Baptist Church on September 10th where he will be performing with young musicians from Chetham's School of Music - a varied evening of popular classics, songs and harp showpieces. For tickets please contact Stephen on 07950734580 or email [email protected]

This summer my porch has got me thinking about the plant hunters, those daring (some would say mad), men that traversed the globe to find new plants. It's hard to imagine that before the Tudor period gardens looked very different with only a small number of plants available. It was the Tudors that got gardening cracking. By the first half of the 17th century English gardeners were collecting plants with gusto and the new English hobby of plantsman-ship had begun. An indulgent hobby for wealthy gentlemen which grew, like our gardens, into a glorious obsession. Collecting plants in person or funding expeditions for others became the very in thing. John Tradescant, a gardener at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire became such a successful and re-spected plant hunter that he was later employed by king Charles I. When Tradescant died in 1638, his son continued in his father's plant hunting footsteps and between them they completely changed our gardens with countless flowers, fruits, trees and even the humble Privet ! The plant hunters aren't well known and whilst most will have heard of Cap-tain Cook and his voyage aboard the Endeavour to the East coast of Austra-lia, few will know that Joseph Banks hitched a lift and collected thousands of plants including Eucalyptus and Callistemon (bottlebrush plant). Even Cap-tain Cook was impressed, hence the botanically named 'Botany Bay'. On their return Banks' achievements almost outshone Cook's. Banks planned to travel again with Cook, but he never did, Cook refused his demands for 15 staff which included two French horn players ! Banks stayed in England where he became the unofficial director of Kew Gardens and he sent others to do the plant hunting for him. Thanks to him and the other Kew botanists, Kew became the envy of all the other botanical gardens.

Of course plant hunting was a dangerous business and plenty lost their lives.- " Good God, when I consider the melancholy of so many of botany's vota-ries, I am tempted to ask whether men are in their right mind who so desper-ately risk life and everything else through the love of collecting plants" So said Carl Linnaeus, the man who is largely responsible for the way we name

By Shelagh Stewart

Page 23: September 2011

23

plants, a much safer occupation than finding them ! Two Kew gardeners, David Nelson and William Brown were aboard Captain Bligh's ship the Bounty when the voyage ended in mutiny and ultimately their deaths. Much closer to home the Duke of Devonshire, along with his head gardener Joseph Paxton were transforming the gardens at Chatsworth and were hungry for new plants. The Duke helped to fund an expedition to California and the Pacific North-West and in March 1838 two Chatsworth gardeners, Peter Banks and Robert Wallace, were warned about the dangers of bears and women, paid £1 4s per week and sent off on the three year expedition. Sadly, just a little over a year later news reached Chatsworth that both young men had perished in the Colombia river rapids. Plant hunting was not for the faint hearted and Paxton never organised another expedition. Of course not everything the plant hunters collected was such a good idea, plants like Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam and Rhoddodendron pon-ticum have turned out to be invasive and expensive mistakes. You'd be wrong if you thought hunting for plants was something confined to the past, or that there's nothing new left to discover. There are still plant hunters who continue to risk life and limb to study, collect and help conserve plants in far flung places. Thankfully, there's more of an emphasis on conser-vation these days and finding ways of making plants work for us. Tom Hart Dyke, a modern day plant hunter, was looking for orchids near Colombia when he was captured and held hostage for 9 months. He was lucky to es-cape with his life, especially when you discover he drove his captors batty by

building gardens in his prison and end-lessly talking to them about orchids ! So, back to the porch....My porch is tiny, two plants is a squeeze and it gets a lot of sun. This year it's home to a pepper plant with a fabulously showy, Gloriosa lily scrambling through it. The glossy green peppers are perfect com-panions to the crimson, spiderlike lilies- fabulous ! They've grown like triffids and I'm a slave to the tomato food, but

it's worth it. My porch looks and smells super-tropical and that's exactly what they are, a small slice of South America in Middleton !

HAPPY GARDENING!
