Replacing Inefficient and Outdated Equipment is COOL…
In 2010, Ameresco (formerly APS Energy Services) conducted an audit of 23 city facilities and identified ways to reduce energy consumption and utility costs. Through an energy performance agreement , city facilities will receive a variety of energy conservation upgrades over the next year, creating work for approximately 100 construction employees. Tempe received $930,000 in Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grant funds to partially cover program costs, which total $8.7 million, in addition to $373,000 in utility rebates. The remaining project costs will be financed through special low-interest bonds, which will be paid over 15 years through utility cost savings of $550,000 per year due to reduced power consumption.

Ameresco Southwest is in the process of replacing 129 individual air conditioning units for the City of Tempe. Systems include heat pumps and gas packs, which consist of both package units and split systems. Thirteen buildings were selected for the air conditioning portion of the efficiency upgrade project. The two facilities seeing the most activity in September were the Edna Vihel Center and Escalante Multi-Generation Facility. The Edna Vihel project is 70% complete and approximately 60% of the units at the Escalante Multi-Generation Facility have been replaced. Special thanks goes out to the Edna Vihel and Escalante Multi-Generation Facility onsite staff, as well as, the facilities group for their excellent support of the construction teams as they continue with this project. The total air conditioning project is scheduled to be completed December 30th, 2011.
