Hi fellow Division 11 Key Clubbers! I hope that

the beginning of the school year has been both

exciting and smooth for you so far. Every new school

year certainly comes with goals and plenty of new

opportunities, so I have made sure to chronicle many

of these important news and updates in this

newsletter. In this issue, I have covered some of the great and successful

projects that our Division's clubs have achieved over the summer, as well as

some clubs' aims for the 2011-2012 Key Club year. These articles can be

sources of motivation and inspiration for your club, so please take a look at

them.

Additionally, with the coming of fall, Key Club affairs have swung

into full gear, with a multitude of new events and deadlines coming up.

This issue contains articles covering important topics like the new

Governor's Project, reminders of important upcoming events (such as the

Fall Rally and Divisional Training Conference), and deadlines, especially

for the dues collection process. Read carefully and never hesitate to ask me

for help or advice! Over the next few months, I will constantly keep in

contact with your clubs to monitor your progress and growth, so stay alert

for future updates.

A Message From the

District Governor Domenick Pesce

Hey New York District Key Club, For those of you who are new to Key Club this year, my

name is DomenickPesce and I will be serving as your New York

District Key Club Governor. I would like to warmly welcome you

all to this 2011-2012 service year. Whether you are a Freshman

new to Key Club, or a veteran member, I’m sure this school year

will provide us all with great opportunities for service!

I have served in the Kiwanis family for the past 6 years at

my home club of East Meadow High School in Long Island, New

York. My job as Governor for the New York District consists of

serving you, the Key Clubbers of the state in any way that I can. I

facilitate Lieutenant Governors and District Board Officers to

make the District run smoothly and successfully.

As the school year begins, Key Club becomes a lot busier

than usual. Your clubs will begin to plan their own service

projects and fundraisers. I encourage you all to get involved in

not only your home club events, but Divisionals and Divisional

Projects as well. Be connected with Key Club in the club,

Division, and District level.

The Governor's Project also offers clubs the chance to

perform a more unique kind of service. This year’s Governor's

Project is called “Music and Art Within our Hearts.” It simply

advocates and encourages the planning of service projects or

fundraising that somehow involves or promotes the music and

the arts. With the economy in its current condition, and school

administrators cutting budgets left and right, students are

beginning to lose out on things such as music, arts, and even Key

Clubs! This is an opportune time to show your teachers, parents,

and administrators how much extracurricular events mean to you

as well as all of the good they accomplish.

Finally, please stay in contact with the District by

subscribing to our email list at www.nydkc.org, as well as the

Official NYDKC Facebook Group (on.fb.me/meTPeC), what are

you waiting for? Go to the homepage and subscribe! Encourage

your Key Club friends to subscribe as well.

I’m extremely excited to be working with so many of you

this year and wish you all of the best luck in your school, SATs,

college applications, and of course Key Club. Inspire to have an

exceptional year!

~ District Governor Domenick Pesce

A Message from the District Secretary By District Secretary Daniel Ivan Lin

Hello New York District,

My name is Daniel Ivan Lin, your District Secretary

for the 2011-2012 service year. I'd first like to welcome you

back from your summer vacation and hope that all of you

enjoyed yourselves over the past two months. For those of

you whose clubs were inactive during the summer, welcome

back to another year of action packed Key Club fun! Though

it has only been a month, it is important that you transition

back into Key Club as soon as you can. As simple as it may

seem, there are many things to keep in mind.

First, it is important that your club submits

paperwork. For clubs that were inactive during the summer, it

is important that you submit a Monthly Report Form (due on

the seventh of each month). For those inactive months, every

club is still required to submit a blank Monthly Report Form.

Second, for clubs that have not held elections or have not

been able to obtain the contact information of their club

officers, please make sure to submit the Election Report Form

as soon as possible. A deadline has been set for all Election

Report Forms and that date is Friday, October 7th, 2011.

Please remember to save the date!

I hope that the amount of paperwork I receive will

increase as the school year continues and that we will

continue to grow stronger as a district with respect to

paperwork! Remember not to forget these basic duties and

that you do more than what is necessary! Remember that

dedication, a heart of service, and a smile are key to Key Club

success! As always, if you have any questions or concerns,

please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I

hope that all of you will be successful in your school year and

Key Club endeavors this year! Let's rock it / rocket, New York

District! Thank you all so much! Please remember to stay

warm (And happy holidays in advance!)!

A Message from the District Treasurer

Message By District Treasurer Emily Gicewicz

Proof can be a copy of the check from the money raised, letter from the benefiting organization, or an expense

report. Email or mail the proofs to the information below. If you have any questions on what could be a proof or if you

have trouble getting one, contact me.

What is so important about FRFs are the fact that is gives your club credit for the fundraising and your club

deserves that credit. You worked hard raising the money and now all you need to do is say you fundraised!

A frequently asked question is if you have to fill out FRFs for due submission and the answer is no, it is only for

fundraising. If you club fundraises to garner money for dues, then you would complete a FRF for that. Speaking of dues,

you can start submitting them today! Keep in mind December 1st is closer then it may seem.

There is a Google spreadsheet for FRFs and it has information on who submitted what and what clubs still need

to send stuff in. Please check it out at http://bit.ly/ouqddP! While you are on the World Wide Web, check out the

treasurer’s new Twitter and please “follow” https://twitter.com/#!/NYDKCTreasurers! Thank you!

Hello, I hope the school year is going very well for everyone! My name is Emily

Gicewicz and I am your District Treasurer for the 2011-2012 service year.

If you are irresolute about what a Fundraising Report Form or a proof is, you have

stumbled upon the perfect article to inform you! A Fundraising Report Form, commonly

abbreviated as FRF, is a form that Treasurers must fill out after every fundraiser used to sum

up your fundraising. This form can be located under report forms on nydkc.org. The form

takes two minutes to fill out and all you need to do is send me proof afterwards. What is

proof? I am glad you asked; proof is verification that proves the fundraising you said you did.

DON'T FORGET TO START COLLECTING DUES!

Hey All!

I am Lieutenant Governor Sean O'Connor from the

fabulous Division 19 in Central New York!

I hope all of you are back in swing with your schools,

clubs, and activities (and I hope Key Club is in your priorities

too)!

As you all should know, Project eliMiNaTe has been

selected as one of our District Projects this year. I am the

chairman for this committee. Governor Domenick Pesce and I are

looking forward to making sure that this cause is emphasized as

soon as possible.

For those of you who don’t know, eliMiNaTe aims to

cure Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus. This deadly disease takes away

the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant

number of women each year. The effects of the disease are

excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions

and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

This project is a joint project with the worldwide

Kiwanians. With the joint efforts of Key Club and Kiwanis, it is

extremely possible to eliMiNaTe Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus!

What did Division 11 do during the summer? by Lt. Governor Emma Cheng

Even before the school year started, Division 11 was

already hard at work making a difference in their local

community. Many Key Clubbers made individual

contributions, taking up internships at nonprofit

organizations and local schools or libraries. Meanwhile,

various clubs stayed committed and continued to hold

group projects, like walks. Division 11 Key Clubbers never

lost their spirit for service, as they participated in

community service and flocked to events like Chinatown

Beautification Day. After concluding the summer with an

fun August Divisional, I can confidently say that Division

11 is well-prepared to pursue and achieve their 2011-2012

service year goals during the new school year!

Page 7: September 2011 Newsletter

September 2011 7

Every new service year, we, the members of the New York District, are

challenged to fulfill new goals and initiatives. Along with this year's District and

International Projects, District Governor DomenickPesce has specifically

selected another initiative that Key Clubbers can contribute to on a local and

District level. Last year's project, appointed by Immediate Past District

Governor NadyliNuñez, focused on education. The project aimed to help

spread knowledge to a diverse array of people from children to adults. This year,

to put a fun and unique twist on the annually-appointed project, District

Governor DomenickPesce has created the initiative "Music and Art, within our

Hearts" for the 2011-2012 service year. How exactly can you contribute to this

cause? Any service project or fundraiser can count as long as it focuses on

promoting the music and arts, two much neglected subjects during troubling

economic times. You can create cards or artworks to donate to a local hospital,

give a musical performance at a local senior center, or even donate to an art-

based nonprofit organization. Almost anything you do can help achieve the

Governor's Project!

As chair of the Governor's Project Committee, I will be working with

the rest of the committee to regularly release helpful suggestions and service

project ideas via publicity materials and nydkc.org. All these resources will be

easily accessible online, so please take advantage of them as you delve into the

project this service year. If you have any questions regarding this topic, never

hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Remember, even the

simplest projects can count and you can be recognized for your work towards

the Governor's Project at our upcoming Leadership Training Conference!

The Governor's Project

As you start the school year and start planning the events for your

Key Club calendar, I urge all of you to try and incorporate a District Project

into one or more of your fundraisers that you plan to hold throughout the

year. As of August, the District as a whole has raised a total of $31,671.79.

With our goal set at $200,000, we still have $168,328.21 to raise before the

end of March.

We will never reach our goal unless every club makes an effort to

fundraise and inform your peers both in Key Club and out about everything

that you can do with these 10 charities. There are 9 amazing charities that

you can choose from, that provide service, not including Local Causes. If

you would like a list of these charities or would like to learn anything about

it including contact information, please visit the district website,

www.nydkc.org. Almost any question you have about any of these charities

can be found on the website, including information about what is a Local

Cause. However, if you have any questions about anything, please contact

either myself, Nicholas Viviano, or the three other committee members

including Kelseyliz Habla, Josh Hill and Stephanie Pena.

Even though we still have $168,328.21 to raise, I am confident that

we will be able to meet our goal. I know I have said it before, but whether it

is a bake sale or a multi-club fundraiser, you are still making a difference and

bringing the District closer to reaching our goal.

High School of Math, Science and Engineering Division Service Spotlights

HSMSE Key Club: New Year By Club PresidentTina Lee

There's something really special about Key Club.

Every year, the Key Club organization manages to unite regular high school students all over the world to come together for one

purpose: service. What's even more amazing is the fact that we can contribute just an hour of our lives to support a huge cause such as

"Making Strides Against Breast Cancer," AIDS, Hemophilia, and more. Another great aspect of Key Club is the fellowship we have in

school. Students from all grade levels are able to interact with one another, working together for a common goal. Throughout the year, we

make new friends, go to new events and service projects, explore conventions and conferences with our New York District, and much more.

The fact that we're so young, and yet have the opportunity and ability to perform these acts is really amazing. It shows me how

powerful youth are and most importantly, demonstrates our potential to benefit our community and even the world.

With greater potential, we can have greater goals. This year, HSMSE Key Club is planning on participating in more events, getting involved

with the New York District's projects, holding fundraisers to support causes such as Breast Cancer, having individual Key Club events such

as Charity Flix (also a fundraiser), and creating numerous in-meeting projects for students to get involved directly during the meeting.

Just recently, we participated in an event called Ecofest. Our Key Club was given tasks that involved working at the front

registration desk, guiding guests, speakers, and other volunteers to their booth or section in the event, as well as helping with setting up and

cleaning the tents and chairs. From solar powered flashlights to hybrid cars, this event served as a convention that provided more

information on eco-friendly products. This year, they held a performance on "eco-friendly ice," where skaters 'ice skated' on this plastic-like

material. They also invited musical bands to come and perform songs that portrayed a natural essence. Amazing Ken returned, putting on

an excellent magic show for the little ones, along with arts and craft and game booths where younger guests had the opportunity to

participate in activities. Overall, Ecofest was a great experience for all ages and definitely a fun-filled event.

BBBS Race for the Kids World Wide

Day of Play by Club Vice President Sara Louie

On a warm Saturday morning, HSMSE Key

Clubbers found themselves volunteering for a huge

event that was associated with Nickelodeon's World

Wide Day of Play event. The event focused on

raising money for the many kids that the Big

Brothers Big Sisters organization mentored

throughout the city. From about 7:00 to 2:30,

volunteers took shifts working as crowd control,

food distributors (Whole Foods supplied food and

Pop Chips!), and other miscellaneous duties.

Thousands of people went through the

72nd Riverside area running, walking, and

playing. Nickelodeon set up a huge activity area for

the kids where they could play a bouncy version of

twister, rock climb, decorate a reusable lunch bag,

take pictures with tv show characters, and listen to

live music. There was also a chalk wall kids could

tag with a message or their name. It was a great

event that seemed to keep the sun shining and rainy

clouds away.

Bronx Science Key Club Club Fair by Club Editor Naurin Shaki

With the leaves falling on the ground, Bronx Science Key Club welcomed a new start to the year. This past week, we had Club Fair.

Club Fair is an event where all the clubs in the school gather to represent their club and recruit as many new members as they can. Key Club,

being one, if not the, biggest club in Bronx Science had a table outside. By the end of the 10th period bell, the kids continued coming in

packs. Timid freshman lined up to sign up to the club and were the biggest crowd, but they all had the same question: What is Key Club?

Current members of Key Club all stood behind that wooden table (filled with spreadsheets, Key Club pamphlets and posters) and

answered this question multiple times throughout the day. It was not the number of times that this question was asked that left a special

mark, but the quality of the answers. My peers all stood beside me, members who I spent hours joking around with, members who I spent

hours being silly with; these same members represented Key Club with such great glory.

As they spoke their eyes lit, their voice was clear and their answers were precise. “Key Club is a community service and leadership

club. In Key Club you learn how to become a leader to better your community. As Key Clubbers, we devote as much time as we possibly can

to helping any and all who is in need.” Behind the wooden table, there was such unity. We all fell into a steady balance of giving out

instructions, listening to instructions, answering questions, laughing as we explained over and over again that we did not make keys, and

screaming to grab the attention of the crowds. These members are a clear representation of the effect Key Club has on an individual, for even

the quietest member was screaming at the top of her lungs to represent her club. These members were a mass of Key Clubbers who had let

Key Club shape who they were as a person and were now willing to share that experience with others. On that day, Bronx Science Key Club

filled up more than 13 spreadsheets, with over 1000 eager newcomers. There couldn’t have been a better way to start the new Key Club year!

LaGuardia Key Club: "Hand in Hand" Event by Club President Sheng Lin

On September 10, 2011, we participated in the "Hand

in Hand" event that took place in Downtown Manhattan and

commemorated 9/11. New York Downtown Hospital, being

very close to the 9/11 site, was one of the major hospitals that

gave relief to victims coming from the World Trade Center on

that tragic day. At the New York Downtown Hospital, we

created hand-crafted mementos that we gave to the patients,

families, doctors, and nurses in the hospital. We created mini

twin tower replicas and paper cranes and handed them out

throughout the hospital. In addition to handing our t-shirts for

the "Hand in Hand" event, we also asked the patients and

hospital staff to write messages. Later that day, we collected

those messages and posted them on the "Wall of

Remembrance," a wall honoring all the victims and those who

served the United States on 9/11.

New Service Year

Resolutions by Club President Sera Kwon

Hunter Key Club is now a lot bigger

than it was when I first joined it as a freshman.

We now have an annual fundraiser event that

raises over $300 and involves faculty and student

alike. This year, I want to use the connections

we’ve formed over the past couple of years to

organize more school-wide events, whether it be

another game show like Faculty Feud or other

formats such as walk-a-thons and book

drives. I’d also like to motivate members to

commit to more long-term projects, rather than

simply relying on brief stints working at charity

walks. Hunter’s come very far, and I know we

can go even further.

DeWitt Clinton Key Club's Plans by Club Editor Qurrat Ain

For this new service year, the DeWitt Clinton Key Club has planned various

walks and is going to hold a fair amount of donation collecting events in order to

raise awareness and donate to charities. Our goals include participating in more walks

than we have done in previous years and instilling a much more strict policy in order

to raise a larger sum of money for each event.

Our hope is to do the Breast Cancer walk on October 16 and to raise up to

two hundred and fifty dollars for the event. We are also going to plant trees in Van

Cortland Park on October 22. As for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, we hope to fill up a

hundred boxes.

As of September, we have about fifty members in the club and our goal is to

recruit more members to join, especially those of lower grade levels, so that when the

seniors have graduated, the rest of the members can carry the club forward. In order

to display our unity at events, we will be holding a bake sale sometime in the middle

of October to raise money to buy Key Club sweaters for members in the club. In

addition to the Breast Cancer Walk, we have planned other walks for the future such

as: AIDS, March of Dimes, MS Walk, Alzheimer’s and much more. We plan to be a

strong group this year and carry on good deeds throughout our community.
