more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million in order to accomplish the task at hand. Previously, Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Similarly, Millburn High School Key Club would like to make a difference in the world. For the previous two years, we received first place trophies for raising the most money for UNICEF among all High School Key Clubs in New Jersey. This annual Talent Show is our main source of fundraising. The show is on . With your help, talent, and enthusiasm, this year’s talent show is sure to raise lots of money for an incredible cause!

Talent Show

BY MEDHA TANDON (Committee Head)

Lights. Camera. Action. Have you ever wished to be a part of a Hollywood event? Well here is your chance! The MHS Key Club is hosting its 10th Annual UNICEF Talent Show! This year our theme is Hollywood and our two celebrity guests will be the loved and super classy Mr. and Mrs. English! With their acting and singing expertise, we are sure to have an interesting show this year! Victoria Nachevnik, Miranda Kasher, Chaerin Ahn, and I are doing our best to get as many people to help and watch the show! It is highly encouraged that all Key Club members watch or perform in the show. This fundraiser will support UNICEF as well as The Eliminate Project. Recently, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to ‘eliminate’ maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) from the face of the Earth. This deadly disease takes the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and mothers each year. To counter this disease,

RTC Recap BY SYLVIA LEVY (Editor)

Biannually, the New Jersey Key Club District has Regional Training Conferences in which Key Clubbers from all over the state come to learn about how to be better members.

This event is student-led and offers Key Club members a chance to interact with the larger service community. The conference at Roxbury on September 23 began with a call to order and then announcements by the District Board. Later, New Jersey Key Clubbers attended various workshops spanning from how to be an incredible officer to icebreakers to learning how to make community service fun.

The Millburn Key Club members who went to this RTC, Marlee Birnberg, Chaerin Ahn and I thoroughly enjoyed the morning of learning and inspiration. Although the Lieutenant Governors and District Board Officers seem removed from our own club’s plans and community service efforts, these high school students are working very hard to ensure that our club has what it needs. We learned about our own club-level officer positions and will use that new information to make our Club even better!

The theme of this year’s Fall RTC’s was “Reach for the Stars with Service”. Attendees listened to informational speeches and workshops while looking at space-themed decorations and thinking about the endless possibilities in our universe for service.

We highly encourage all members and officers to attend a Regional Training Conference while being a member of the club. It is an easy way to learn about inspiration and service while having fun and meeting new people.

Here, Marlee Birnberg, Sylvia Levy, Bria Metivier

and Chaerin Ahn (L to R) enjoy themselves at

the North RTC at Roxbury High School while

learning about the greater Key Club

community.

Our club, along with all other Key Clubs Internationally, is raising money to buy immunizations for mothers and children suffering with maternal/neonatal tetanus, or MNT. The goal: to eliminate this disease.

Some of the money we raise goes to this cause which provides for the care and help for babies with birth defects. Our school also has an independent march of dimes club, which we are in contact with.

Annually, we collect food and money from shoppers at the local Shoprite stores and from homerooms at our high school around Thanksgiving and Christmas. This food goes to the Hillside Food Bank, about 20-30 minutes away from Millburn-Short Hills.

As a state, members of New Jersey Key Clubs raise money and supplies for this organization which helps Children’s’ hospitals in the state stay financially healthy and good environments for sick kids. Our club also visits the local Children’s Specialized Hospital a few times a year.

Our club also helps out around Essex County. We go to the annual Back-to-School Night and read to children at the local library. Members also volunteer at nursing homes and elementary schools.

Hello Everyone!

I would just like to start off by saying that September was a very successful month for Eliminate. Not only did we raise money with the Red Mango night on the first night of school, but we also raised money from a raffle in the last week of September. We made a whopping $76.60, which is enough to save 43 lives! Honestly, I think that is AMAZING! I would like to thank all of you who participated in the fundraisers and helped out.

October is going to be a fun filled month as well. There is the ever so exciting Fall Rally, where you get to spend the whole day at Six Flags with your friends. There is also the annual Talent Show, which is always so much fun to attend and participate in. My favorite event, the Car Wash, is also in October. And lastly, there is a wonderful fundraiser planned for Eliminate again.

I look forward to seeing you all participate this month in our various events! I wish you all a fun October!

Yours in Caring and Service, Karen Fich
