Man, the hits just keep on comin’, at least for me! Last month, food on a stick, this month a lake life themed issue. (Put me on the water, and I’m a happy girl all summer long!)

September brings some of the country’s best sportsmen to some of my favorite spots. Lake Decatur plays host to the Bassmaster Elite Series Toyota Trucks All-Star Week September 20-23. See the action, hit some demos, meet the stars, and maybe get on TV—ESPN 2 is covering the weigh-ins daily.

In between action, whoop it up at Lake Fest, Decatur’s newest festival, billed as a mini Decatur Celebration. Live music, crafts, kids fun and of course plenty of food on a stick make it a must!

The smooth sailing continues as we check out the partnership between the Decatur Yacht Club and U of I Sailing Club—Decatur now has its very own regatta!

On the supply side, The Fisherman’s Quarters has you and everyone else covered with all things outdoors, with live bait in brand new digs to boot and reopening just in time for the tourney.

And what’s a lake without casual waterfront dining? Check out our Food Dude’s take on Dockside, a Lake Decatur staple. (Hint: You can’t lose with anything on the menu that has “Dockside” in the name.)

Whether you live in the no-wake zone, let the wind guide you or live by the “if you don’t leave a wake, why bother” mantra, peruse our pages for wild, wet entertainment.

Backpack Attack

Swing into School

The YMCA hosted a Kid Fest last month featuring the Y Backpack Attack. Loaded back-packs were handed out to 2,000 kids, grades K through sixth, to kick the school year off right! Sponsors contributed healthy snacks, lunch, puppet shows, train rides, bounce houses and fire safety tips to make the event a success.

Paul's Puttin' Place & Dunn's Dugout were busy last month, hosting a Teen Night and a Back to School event. School ID's earned visitors free golf and batting cages along with snacks and prizes.

LHP (Lourash Hursh Peoples) seasoned Paco's with some acoustic goodness, becoming 2nd Friday regulars on the back room stage. Couple that with dinner and drink specials and call it a fantastic night on the town. These tunes are delicious!

The RhythmOf the Night

This year's Decatur Celebration hit every high note featuring a plethora of jims, jams and cover bands. Big names graced the evening stages, but local talent fueled the fire day in and day out. Like Rosetta Stone on the North Street Stage—all Decaturites who have been playing together for over 8 years. Along with the music, games, food, performers and rides kept this year's event hopping!

The Fisherman’s Quarters…the Ultimate Stop for OutdoorsmenYou get a line and I’ll get a pole…but before we head to the fishin’ hole, we’ll hit The Fisherman’s Quarters for live bait, tackle, boat repair and more.

For hard core anglers and lake lovers alike, The Fisherman’s Quarters has you covered, with anything you want for not just fishing but hunting and outdoors pursuits galore.

“I was raised on boats my whole life and on the lake my whole life,” says owner Chris Delatte, himself an amateur angler and avid outdoorsman. “I’ve been fishing since I was old enough to breathe.”

Living and breathing the outdoors life, he knows what to stock and what service to provide. Servicing all makes and models of boats and trailers, Chris appeals to all audiences.

Likening the business to a scaled down Bass Pro Shop, he’s stocked it with all things outdoors, from live bait and tackle to camo, decoys, hunting accessories and bows.

There must be something to his formula because after just two years in business, he recently moved to a larger location. The new building at 2886 S. Mt. Zion Rd. in Decatur affords him not just more space but more opportunity to grow.

With winterization season coming up, he’s ready and able to service a large number of crafts in a short time—typically a mere one-day turnaround time. But don’t expect

any fancy winterization packages; look for good deals year round. “Every day’s a special,” he laughs.

Featuring everyday specials of its own, the live bait shop will reopen in mid-September with a full selection of everything anglers need. Plus, he features a line of specially designed handmade bait you won’t find just anywhere.

Something else Chris has a line on: classes and seminars. Working with local and national organizations, he hopes to have a slate of courses that bring in the pros to share first-hand knowledge with his customers.

As they like to say, from bow to stern and everything in between, they have you covered!

$16.99 from Play it Again Sports

I had my first shot at Disc Golf this past month as part of the Richland "Killer Sprouts" team in the Decatur Games. It was a blast and I have already decided to start building my own flying disc arsenal. Within days of playing the Nelson Park course, I found myself at Play it Again Sports choosing three discs to start out with. Of course, I based my decision mostly on whether the color is bright enough for me to find when I make bad tosses and whether they looked cool enough-hence the Jackal graphics. I ended up with one Distance Driver, one Fairway Driver and a Putter for when I finally make it to the basket.

The Food Dude is not a professional critic. He just really, really likes food.

THE FOOD DUDE10Want Casual Dining? Do It Dockside!

This dude loves a good casual dining event and was beyond excited to hit up Dockside for an easy, breezy meal, flip flops and all.

Located right on Lake Decatur with a lovely picturesque view, its own duck squadron and a gas dock to boot, Dockside lets you fill up from both sides of the water.

Pull in and tie off the boat for a midday break on the water, or, if you’re a landlubber, park for a quick bite any time.

With a menu as varied as Decaturites’ tastes, Dockside offers a fun summer feast to be enjoyed dine-in or carryout.

My boy Blue and I went for the water view dining on the outdoor patio. We got a little carried away ordering, but who could blame us?

Burgers, pulled pork, a Cordon bleu with raw horseradish, the Dockshoe (their take on a horseshoe) and a host of sandwiches and appetizers that would bring drool to even the driest of mouths.

After much debate we started with the cheese cubes, a delightful mix of deep fried cheddar and pepper jack, which our server assured us we’d have no problem telling apart. (She was right, but even if she wasn’t, who cares, it was all good, and what makes mouths happier than cheese?!)

On to the main course, where it was the walleye sandwich for me—thanks to the waitress’ pronouncement that you couldn’t beat it—plus thick cut crinkle fries. Fish sing over this one, boys. Thick, golden batter with just the right flavor and crispiness to complement the light, flaky white fish. Fries crispy on the outside yet tender on the inside, with the perfect crunch and munch texture.

Meanwhile, Blue, of the go-big-or-go-home school, went for the Dockside. This culinary

creation consists of its signature handmade, thick patty on butter-brushed Texas toast, topped with green peppers, onions, bacon, two cheeses and mushrooms. Available single or double, but unless you’re ready to eat your arm, stick with the single. He finished it off with hush puppies, a classic side perfectly prepared and generously battered with a fluffy seasoned cornmeal concoction inside.

We enjoyed it all to the sound of waves crashing on the shore, the thrum of boats on the water and the cacophony of ducks wandering across the yard (led by a stately lone white duck who stole the show).

Added bonus: service that wasn’t just fast but friendly and attentive, too.

Eat up, drink up, gas up! Whatever floats your boat, you can get it at Dockside.

Lots of little fish, or one

really big fish?

My favorite childhood fishing memories are of four of us standing on the shore catching bluegills as fast as we could cast, while the people next to us watched their hooks and bobbers get neglected.

But as an adult, my favorite day of fishing included catching a 15-inch muskie on one cast from shore because I knew where a muskie should be lying. Not big for a muskie, but much bigger than any of the crappies we had caught from the boat.

Let’s go fishing. You might be thinking of a whole bunch of adjectives you can associate with fishing. Me? I love fishing. With fall on its way, fishing is about to heat up. Cooler weather jump starts the food cycle because nature is trying to store its energy in larger bodies for winter. Which means little fish get really hungry for little bugs, and big fish get really hungry for little fish. Who wins? Those of us casting for all sizes of fish.

Would you rather catch a lot of little fish, or one really big fish?

The show, though no longer juried, had an average of 100 artists show their work for sale in Central Park and on the streets of downtown Decatur.

In 1991, with the desire to place greater emphasis on fine arts, the Barn Colony and the Decatur Area Arts Council (DAAC) established a separate juried fair, Art on Main, on the grounds of the Millikin Homestead. So as not to interfere with the Downtown Decatur Council’s art fair, this new fair was held in the spring of the year. The following year, the Barn Colony discontinued its involvement with the fair, and Gallery 510 Arts Guild stepped up to partner with DAAC to produce Art on Main through 1994.

In 1995, the Downtown Decatur Council, Decatur Area Arts Council and Gallery 510 negotiated to present a single, juried fine arts fair in Central Park on the third weekend in September, and Arts in Central Park was born. Although the event focuses primarily on visual art, the word “arts” was chosen for use in the name to reflect the variety of art forms represented during the weekend.

When the Downtown Decatur Council was dissolved in 2010, Arts in Central Park became a collaboration of the Decatur Area Arts Council and Gallery 510, and that relationship continues today. Though minor changes have occurred since 1995, the basic premise has remained and is still going strong today.

Arts in Central Park continues the 50-year tradition of offering a terrific arts experience for both area artists and community members. Artists get to show off their creativity and hard work, while the rest of us have the opportunity to enjoy and even buy it. Plus you’ll find arts activities, an art shop for kids, live entertainment and food booths. So take the entire family downtown September 15 from 10 am to 5 pm and September 16 from 10 am to 4 pm, and see what special 50th anniversary treats have been added to sweeten one of Decatur’s truly unique annual delights.

by Jerry Johnsonand Stella Carnahan

Hearing the pleasant sounds of strolling musicians floating on the cool breezes of mid-September while wandering through the artists’ tents at Arts in Central Park is something we look forward to every year. It’s become a genuine Decatur tradition as well as a sure sign that summer is nearly over. However, Decatur’s premiere fine arts fair has gone through a number of changes over its 50-year history. Yes…50 years!

The first juried art show, the Downtown Art Fair, was created and produced by the Barn Colony Artists group in 1962 and was held on the third weekend in September, just like today. (“Juried” means artists must submit slides or photographs of their work for review by a jury- a knowledgeable committee-before being accepted into the show. The jury considers technical skill, creativity, the medium and other requirements.)

After 20 years, the Barn Colony turned over the planning and production of the Downtown Art Fair to the Downtown Decatur Council in 1983.

Dear Miss Manners – I am getting married next month and want to give my bridesmaids something they will actually use later. Can you help me come up with a unique idea that they will all love? - Bethany

Bethany – Bridal party gifts are often one of the details that get taken care of with little thought as organizing a wedding that can become overwhelming.

First things first, before you even begin searching for the perfect bridesmaids gifts, figure out a budget you would like to spend. Next think about how each gift can represent each individual yet still commemorate your special day.

One perfect example is having custom headpieces made for each girl in a style unique to their personalities yet complementary of each other. They can then wear them on your wedding day and just to dress up anytime they like. Think vintage, girly & fun.

Remember, manners matter! You want your attendants to know how much you appreciate their support and how much they mean to you. Include a personal note to each one of your bridesmaids to let them know how much you care.

Where else can you clear 75 mph on the water, see a world series of fishing and see nationally known entertainers live? Lake Decatur, of course—and it’s all free! The Bassmaster Elite Series Toyota Trucks All-Star Week and Decatur’s newest event, Lake Fest, promise head-to-head competition side by side with good old-fashioned family fun.

Here’s how it works: Twelve anglers will compete for a $100,000 purse. The winner takes home the top prize of $60,000 and the title of All-Star Champion. Eight competitors come from the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings; fans choose the remaining four. Voting opens on bassmaster.com in late August, giving fans the opportunity to push for their favorite angler.

The four-day event features two exciting stages: the All-Star Semi-final September 20-21 at Lake Shelbyville and the Evan Williams Bourbon All-Star Championship, where the top four finishers by weight will compete September 22-23 on Lake Decatur.

At least that’s the way it’s planned, assuming Mother Nature doesn’t have other ideas like continuing the drought. But even if our rain dances don’t produce and fishing has to stay on Lake Shelbyville for all four days (at press time no decision had been made), we’ll still have a front row seat for the action. “From the fan’s perspective, everything will be the same, regardless of where we fish,” says Michael Mulone, Director of Event Partnerships for Bassmaster.

And fish they will, bringing some of the country’s top anglers right into our backyard, er, marina.

Brent Chapman currently leads Angler of the Year points; he’s got the “hot stick,” as

they say. Also bringing the noise: Ott DeFoe, the still-hot angler who won in his rookie year last year, and Todd Faircloth, always a tough competitor. Kevin Van Dam is always one to watch. The “Babe Ruth of fishing” has won seven Angler of the Year titles and four Bassmaster Classics.

“Meet them at the docks and shake their hands, meet them at the weigh-ins,” says Michael. “Show the kids and get up close and personal. For a lot of people, it’s meeting their heroes.”

Weigh-ins right on the Decatur waterfront will be broadcast nationwide on ESPN 2 at around 4 pm daily. “Come out and see it,” says Lori Sturgill, director of Lake Fest, which will run concurrent with the tournament. “We want a big crowd to show how much Decatur supports its events!”

Also not to be missed: the Hope For The Warriors Tournament on Saturday, September 22. Eight veterans wounded in

action will fish side by side with the pros. The eight anglers who aren’t fishing in the final will act as fishing guides and tournament partners for the wounded heroes.

Whether you’re an avid angler yourself or you’ve never dropped a line in your life, you’re sure to find fun to spare during this action-packed weekend.

“With our tournaments, we want to be woven within the fabric of the community,” says Michael. “This is a big, four-day festival, with everything at Nelson Park and featuring fishing plus local food and beverages, concerts, kids’ activities and more.”

Lori can attest to the “and more.” The Lake Fest organizer envisions this as a mini Decatur Celebration, bringing festivals back to the lakefront—and all FREE to the public.

You’ll see live music on at least three stages, featuring nationally known artists as well as local favorites. The lineup will also

include local performing groups like show choirs and others who aren’t available for Celebration. And with the tournament comes Bush Hawg, an up-and-coming country/southern rock act out of Nashville presented by Evan Williams Bourbon.

Craft and commercial vendors will show their wares. A full complement of food and beverage sellers will offer delights to tempt every taste bud. A huge kids’ area will deliver activities for all ages, including a kids’ fishing derby.

Plus, a host of tournament sponsors will give you the opportunity for hand-on, firsthand experience, with demos of boats and other products. Where else can you get in a boat and see what it’s like to go 75 miles per hour?

“You don’t have to be a hard core angler to enjoy this event—it’s free; it’s family friendly,” says Michael. “It’s great for the family who

wants to get out on the water or fishes from shore. It’s a community event that welcomes everyone.”

If you spend any time at Lake Decatur, you’ve likely seen them: smallish white sailboats careening across the water one direction before spinning around and coming back the opposite way. Or maybe some bigger sailboats, just tooling around, letting the wind envelop them and take them along on a leisurely cruise near their docks at Lost Bridge Road and Lake Shore Drive.

COME SAIL AWAYDecatur Yacht Club, U of I Sailing Club join forces

article by Troy Hayes

COME SAIL AWAY

The small boats are called 420s, named for their length of 4.2 meters, and they are likely being piloted by a member of the University of Illinois Sailing Club. And with just more than 100 members, the bigger boats are likely steered by someone belonging to the Commodore Decatur Yacht Club. The two organizations recently formed an alliance, with the Yacht Club helping keep afloat the slowly sinking U of I squad.Paula Luckenbill is an avid member of the Yacht Club, sailing whenever she gets a chance. She attends a sailboat show in Chicago each year, and in 2010, she happened upon the U of I booth.

She signed up for the club’s newsletter and quickly found that finances were a mess. The club is a registered student organization and is independently funded, but bake sales just weren’t paying the bills at Clinton Lake. Paula, who’s been sailing for 40 years, remembered when the Yacht Club used to race boats, but as the members have gotten older, the pace has slowed considerably.“It started as a racing club. It was a hopping place back in the day,” says Paula. “It’s evolved into more of a cruising club now.”That’s why, when Paula pitched the idea of helping the U of I club, which has around 15 active members and a few who pop in and out, by providing a place to sail, store their boats and hold a race, many jumped at the idea.“Most of the older guys were giddy about it,” Paula says. “They were chomping at the bit for the regatta.”They planned the course—laid out depending on the wind—posted buoys to indicate turnarounds, helped with the boats and even grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, brats and all the fixins to feed the nine schools that came for the inaugural Chief Illiniwek Memorial Regatta last October.“A lot of the members wrote checks to help with the costs,” says Emily Van Dam, a member of the U of I club. “It’s really been a great match. Their willingness to help and the proximity to Champaign have been incredible.

They’ve made it possible for the club to continue.”The racing part of the U of I club, which folded for nearly 20 years until students literally dug the boats out of the ground where they were being stored 10 years ago, is reserved for Illinois students, but Emily says students from any school (Millikin, Richland, Parkland, et al.) or non-students who would like to learn sailing skills, or just brush up on their existing skills, are welcome to become members.“The club is definitely geared toward students,” Emily says. “But we are very open to anyone interested in learning to sail.”In her pitch to the Yacht Club board, Paula said she thought helping out the university club might bring new, younger members to the organization. And while she can’t specifically tie the alliance with the U of I club to a recent influx of new Yacht Club members, it is awfully coincidental.“The regatta may have sparked the renewed interest,” she says. “Along with new members, we have had a lot of people come out and say they had no idea that we had a club.”The second Chief Illiniwek Memorial Regatta is planned for October 13-14, but with the drought this summer, the outlook is grim.“I hope we get some rain,” says Emily. “We need a lot, but it’s still possible.”Paula is doing everything she can to bring showers.“I’ve been doing rain dances, washing and waxing my car,” she said. “I think I may have found the trick. I left my sun roof open the other day, and it rained. It wasn’t good for my car, but it was good for everything else.”Maybe with a city-wide rain dance or just a few people leaving their car windows down, the lake will get the much-needed drink it needs. It would be lovely, like a body of water dotted in white. “There’s something special and magical about a lake full of sailboats,” Paula says. “It’s beautiful.”
