September is here again, and with it the release of the first of many inspiring coin releases in 2014. As you are all probably aware, the Mint has had a great first half of 2013 through the release of fantastic coins that continue to tell Australia’s story.

The largest of these releases was the launch of the 2013 60th Anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II $2 coloured circulating coin. The slow reveal of the coin’s design on the website www.colourfulchange.com.au took the Australian public along for the circulating coin production journey with a fun view of how coins are made at the Mint. The unlocking of each stage of the process was announced on the Facebook page www.facebook.com/yourcolourfulchange and on twitter with the hashtag #colourfulchange. We are currently running a Colourful Change video competition on the Colourful Change website, and voting closes soon so make sure you check it out and vote for your favourite!

The Governor-General of Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Quentin Bryce AC AVO, officially launched the 2013 60th Anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II $2 coloured circulating coin to the public at the end of June; Her Excellency pressed the button to begin the packing process which packaged these coins for distribution to banks.

The coin has been spotted in change across Australia already, however we are also holding a coin swap at a location which will be chosen through a Twitter competition using hashtags to vote for the city to hold the event in. Check out our website for more details! We look forward to meeting all the enthusiastic collectors wanting to get their hands on this coin.

The Mint recently set up a temporary shop in Queensland, with a stall at the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) in Brisbane from August 8 – 17. In addition to more than 10 000 animals and 23 000 competition entries, one of the highlights of the show for many was creating a 2013 Bicentenary of the Holey Dollar and Dump $1 uncirculated ‘B’ counterstamp coin on our mobile press – a great take-home memento from one of Queenland’s largest and most loved annual events.

Back on home soil, the Mint’s Visitors Gallery was recently transformed with the installation of the sculpture ‘Floating Currency’ above the ‘Cascading Staircase’ in the Mint foyer. It was launched by Centenary of Canberra Creative Director Robyn Archer on Thursday 27 June, who spoke at length about the importance of institutions such as the Royal Australian Mint in continuing to tell the Australian story.

This month’s Mint Issue includes great coins which will be kicking off our numismatic calendar for 2014, as well as some new 2013 coins. The most exciting coin has been featured on the front cover of this Issue, and celebrates the 40th anniversary of Sydney’s Opera House. The second coin in the Southern Sky series can also be found within these pages, and make sure to look out for the Ashes and Lunar Year of the Horse coins as well.

Happy collecting!

In any given year the Royal Australian Mint produces hundreds of thousands of circulating and numismatic coins. Few people know exactly who is responsible for designing, minting, and releasing a particular coin, however.

So, with that in mind, we have peeled back the veil in order to introduce you to people who are instrumental in producing some of the finest coins on the planet.

They call themselves “Minties”.

Sang TranCirculating Coin Hall Leading Hand

The Royal Australian Mint’s factory floor is like that of any other manufacturing plant – multi-faceted, fast paced and noisy. To meet the needs of the Australian public, the Mint employs a number of dedicated individuals to oversee its operations.

One of these people is Sang Tran, the Mint’s Circulating Coin Hall Leading Hand.

Sang moved to Canberra from Vietnam in 1980, and admits to not knowing a lot about the Australian capital when he arrived on our shores; he began work

at the Mint in 1988, and is one of the few people who have seen the business transition to new technologies – and to new premises.

“I’ve seen many changes in my time here,” said Sang, “from the way we ‘tip’ the blanks; to the introduction of AGVs (automatically guided vehicles); and introduction of robots into the Mint.”

“We have had to learn new systems and new technologies – but it all helps make the process smoother.”

As Leading Hand, Sang is responsible for helping coordinate the production of Australia’s circulating coins. He is also affectionately known as the “keeper” of Mint drawcard robot, Titan.

Sydney Opera House is a masterpiece that belongs to all Australians. One of the world's most recognised and celebrated buildings, it contributes significantly to the cultural life of the city, Sydney.

Opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 20 October 1973, the UNESCO World Heritage listed building welcomes over 8.2 million visitors on site every year and is one of the world’s busiest performing arts centres and cultural destinations.

Following an international design competition, drawing more than 200 entries around the world, Jørn Utzon – a relatively unknown Danish architect – triumphed with his scheme of vaulted sails. In giving the world one of the 20th century’s greatest buildings, Jørn Utzon changed the creative and cultural landscape of Australia forever.

In 2013 the Royal Australian Mint celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Sydney Opera House with the release of a one ounce silver proof coin depicting the much-loved building in its entire splendour as seen from the harbour.

In July 2007 Sydney Opera House was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognising the structure as a ‘masterpiece of human creative genius'. To complement this precious keepsake, the Mint has also released an aluminium bronze version of the coin which will make both a great present and a wonderful start to a new collection.

Exciting and extroverted, vivid and animated, people born in the year of the horse are said to be bursting with energy – the life of any party they attend.

It is with this description in mind that the Royal Australian Mint is pleased to announce the latest release in its innovative Lunar series, the Lunar Year of the Horse coin.

Since 2007 the Mint has celebrated each Lunar Year by releasing coins depicting each animal of the Chinese Zodiac Calendar.

1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 and 2014.

2013 $5 silver proof COLOUR PRINTED domed coin

This year, Royal Australian Mint’s celebrated Southern Sky collection features a heavenly body of stars that have been talked about, and admired, for millennia.

Pavo is Latin for peacock, and the origins of the Pavo constellation are steeped in ancient Greco-Roman myths, variations of which are still told around the world today.

2013 Southern Sky – PAVO

210187

$5 Silver Proof Colour Printed Domed CoinIn Greek and Roman mythology, the peacock was sacred to Hera (or Juno), Goddess of Women and Marriage – who was also the wife of Zeus; she was said to have adorned the tail feathers of the bird with the thousand eyes of her giant servant, Argus Panoptes, as a tribute after he was slain.

The constellation is said to depict a male peacock who has erected and fanned out his train, drooped his half-open wings to his sides, and is strutting and prancing from one foot to the other, shivering from time to time. This produces a spectacular shimmering, psychedelic display – and an amazing coin.

Just as the peacock is a symbol of the greatness of an ancient Goddess, so is the Pavo coin a symbol of the Mint’s continued commitment to produce breathtakingly innovative collectible coins.

The coin has been expertly crafted by Mint designer, Aaron Baggio, and shows the Pavo constellation as it appears in the early night sky. The celestial coordinates of the starry image encircle the outer rim of the coin.

Following the sell-out success of our 2012 Southern Sky Crux $5 Colour Printed Domed Coin, the Mint is releasing 10 000 of these innovative and imaginative coins to collectors. They are expected to sell fast, so get in and secure yours today.

FIRSTBORNbaby of the

DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE

He is the baby boy that, seemingly, the whole world has been waiting for.

Ever since the Palace announced in late 2012 that the Duchess of Cambridge was pregnant, preparations have been made in earnest for the arrival of the new royal - all in front of the

world’s media and a never-ending line of eager onlookers.

It has been 120 years since a sitting British monarch has been alive for the birth of a great-grandchild and heir. Prince George now becomes third in line to the throne behind

The Duke of Cambridge and The Prince of Wales.

With the impending birth of the new prince, the Royal Australian Mint sought approval from Buckingham Palace to create a specially designed coin – complete with the name of the new

royal – and it is our pleasure to now bring this special coin to you.

The Korean War began on 25 June 1950, when North Korean forces invaded South Korea. Attrition warfare, reminiscent of the Western Front years before, ensued.

Fierce fighting continued right up until the last day of the conflict, which was signaled by the signing of an armistice on 27 July 1953

– three years and one month after the war began. The ending was so abrupt that some soldiers had to be convinced the conflict really was over.

60th Anniversary of the Korean War

This $1 coin produced by the Royal Australian Mint commemorates the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. Its reverse, designed by Mint designer Aaron Baggio, symbolizes the signing of the armistice agreement between communist and United Nations leaders in 1953. The depiction of a dove in flight and the word ‘peace’ in Korean is a reminder of the ultimate goal on the still-troubled peninsula.

Celebrated 19th century zoological illustrator Henry Constantine Richter was born into a family of renowned artists and sculptors around 1821. It is little wonder then that Richter, a man of amazing natural talent, was commissioned by famed wildlife author John Gould in

1844 - following the death of Gould’s wife and respected illustrator, Elizabeth.

The second release in the Royal Australian Mint’s Explorers’ First Sightings series is a representation of a Western Grey Kangaroo, taken from John Gould’s The Mammals of Australia. Richter’s depiction of these animals was taken from a sketch made by Gould’s Australian journey in 1838.

This beautifully designed coin captures the essence of Gould’s original design and Richter’s artistic talent – as well as the intrigue, intricacy, and creative expression that went into documenting what was then an almost unseen species in Europe.

60th Anniversary of the

CORONATIONof HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II

Months before her 26th birthday, Elizabeth, eldest daughter of King George IV ascended to the throne following the death of her father.

The coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II took place over a year later, on 2 June 1953, and was an event that captured the imagination of the entire world.

In addition to the 8251 guests in attendance, an international audience of over twenty million watched the coronation ceremony on television

– for many it was the first televised event they had ever seen.

At the time, many saw the accession of this new, young queen to be the spark Great Britain needed following the devastation of the Second World War and the hardship in the years that

had followed – some even called it the start of a prosperous, second Elizabethan era.

60 years later, Queen Elizabeth II is a monarch who is still adored around the world; a Queen whose reign has endured through extremely trying times, and has been celebrated in times of

prosperity; and a loving mother, grandmother and, as of June, a great-grandmother.

2013 20c Uncirculated CoinWhen an Australian cricket team first won on English soil in 1882, a British newspaper, The Sporting Times, famously published a satirical obituary stating that English cricket had died, the body had been cremated and the ashes had been taken to Australia. The subsequent 1882-1883 English tour of Australia was dubbed “the quest to regain The Ashes”…

During their tour, a small terracotta urn was presented to English captain Ivo Bligh by a group of Melbourne women. It was said to contain the cremated remains of a cricket bail – or so the story goes. This urn became the symbol of one of the most celebrated and hotly contested rivalries in international sport.

130 years later, the Royal Australian Mint has released this striking memento in commemoration of the nail-biting contests of the past – and in anticipation of those yet to come.

2013 $1 Uncirculated CoinAustralia’s ‘ King of Country’ was born in Kempsey, New South Wales, in June, 1927. Named David Gordon Kirkpatrick by his parents, the young musician adopted the stage name “Slim Dusty” at just 11 years of age.

Slim’s 1957 hit “A Pub with No Beer” was the first Australian single to receive a Gold Record and was, at the time, the biggest selling record by an Australian. What is more, the boy from the bush made sure everyone heard his music – he was known to travel 30 000 miles annually to reach his audience.

Looking Forward, Looking Back – Slim Dusty’s 100th album – was released in 2000 through record label EMI, as all his previous 99 records had been. This meant that Slim Dusty was the first recording artist to release 100 albums through the same record label – just another accolade in a truly mesmerising career.

The next release in Royal Australian Mint’s “Inspirational Australians” series pays tribute to one of Australia’s greatest ever musical talents – and one of the nation’s favourite sons.

Atlantic Puffin 310216

The Atlantic Puffin’s waddling gait and often peculiar behaviour have led it to be known fondly as the “clown of the sea” and “sea parrot”. This ‘colourful’ character rounds out the Mint’s 2013 Polar Animal series in eye-catching fashion.

Weddell Seal 310219

Mottled-coated Weddell Seals can weigh as much as 600kg – and a good thing too! These ‘smiling’ Antarctic locals are considered to have the southern-most distribution of any mammal on the planet, with only a thick layer of fatty blubber to protect them from the elements.

BICENTENARY OF THE

BICENTENARIO DEL

2013 Silver Proof Three Coin SetAs part of our celebration of the Holey Dollar and Dump, Australia’s first official currency, the Royal Australian Mint have collaborated with the Royal Spanish Mint (Real Casa del la Moneda) to bring you this exceptional silver proof three coin set.

Coin historians will know that the first ever Holey Dollars were struck from Spanish eight reale pieces, popularly known as “pieces of eight”, and were crafted by a convicted forger.

Now, in 2013, we celebrate this monetary link between the two nations with the first ever joint coin issue between Australia and Spain. The set features a 10 euro coin, $1 coin, and 25 cent coin.

What is more, the commemorative 10 euro coin features a reproduction of an obverse design of the eight reale coins. This is the first euro coin to bear a unique ‘C’ privy mark, echoing the Royal Australian Mint’s Canberra mintmark, which highlights the significance of this international partnership and monetary milestone. The reverse designs of the accompanying $1 and 25 cent coins are reminiscent of the original Holey Dollar and Dump, which have become rare and valuable.
