Janelli Hair and Beauty,    Falmouth,  have  recently  celebrated  their  first  anniversary.

This  Family  run  retro  salon  first  opened  its  doors  in  July  2013,  and  has  had  an  “amazing  first  year”,  said  Partner  Paula  Speed.

Opened  originally  with  Paula  and  her  two  daughters,  ex  Inkfish  Stylist  Danielle,  and  Beautician  Jess,  they  grew  the  business  between  them  for  the  first  few  months  until  another  stylist  was  needed.

Fortunately  at  the  same  time,  Falmouth  girl,  senior  Inkfish  stylist  and  “TIGI  inspirational  youth”    winner,  Carla  Fairburn  ,  was  also  looking  to  move    to  Falmouth,  and  as  Danielle  and  Carla  had  worked  together  in  the  past,  it  was  a  natural  transition  for  Carla  to  join  the  Janelli  team.

Janelli  offers  a  cool  relaxed  retro  themed  salon,  with  separate  Beauty  room  and  Spray  tan  booth.

Although  offering  cutting  edge  techniques  and  products,  the  Janelli  team  have  a  laid  back,  welcoming,  easy  going  approach  in  line  with  the  salon’s  ethos,  and  would  love  you  to  come  in  to  discuss  your  hair  and/or  beauty  needs.

The  Janelli  experience  offers  that  rare  bit  of  “me  time”  that  we  all  need  occasionally  ,  so  come  up  and  have  a  quality    coffee  and    a  chat,    whilst  listening  to  pleasant  music    ,and  let  us  make  each  visit  that    “Something  a  little  different”.

Trescobeas Surgery    As ever General Practice continues to make headline news:

48 hours' wait to see a GP- Daily Mail – 11th July Four in ten patients still wait longer than two days to see their GP, despite Government claims to have speeded up access.

Millions wait a week to see GP - The Telegraph – 11th July Patients waited more than a week to see their GP on almost 50 million occasions last year, new figures show as doctors warn pressures are becoming intolerable

At  Trescobeas Surgery  we  believe  that  patients  need  a  better  service  so  we  ensure  90%  of    non-‐urgent  and  100%  of  urgent  problems  get  dealt  with  on  the  day.    Average  waiting  time  to  speak  to  one  of  our  GPs  is  3  hours.

In  addition  to  this  we  are  striving  to  do  more  with  our  most  vulnerable  patients.  This  includes  named  GP  for  over  75s,  care  planning  for  those  at  risk  of  hospital  admission,  checking  up  on  those  discharged  from  hospital  and  health  checks  for  40-‐74  year  olds.  We  also  partner  up  with  local  organisations,  such  as  The  Core,  to  offer  all  our  patients  access  to  a  good  healthy  lifestyle

However  it  is  getting  much  more  difficult  to  sustain  this  level  of  service.  It  is  no  secret  that  due  to  ageing  and  increasing  population,  improved  medical  care,  greater  patient  expectation  and  much  more  preventative  care,  demand  is  increasing.    Conversely  NHS  budgetary  pressures  mean  our  share  of  funding  is  reducing.      A  couple  of  statistics:

General  Practice  carries  out  90%  of  all  NHS  patient  contacts  but  receives  only  8.39%  of  the  NHS  budget.

It  is  predicted  that  GPs  will  conduct  40million  more  consultations  a  year  by  2017  yet  the  budget  would  have  shrunk  to  just  7.29%

Whilst  we  continue  to  tighten  up  our  administrative  procedures,  reduce  wastage,  be  more  innovative  and  generally  do  more  with  less,  there  is  only  so  much  we  can  do  without  impacting  upon  patient  care.

Therefore  Trescobeas Surgery    is  backing

This  petition  aims  to  raise  the  plight  of  General  Practice  with  Government  and  demand  an  increase  in  funding.  To  read  more  about  this  and  to  sign  the  electronic  petition,  please  see:

LUCY GETS HER TEETH INTO NEW BUSINESS - FOR HORSES A chance experience while working voluntarily at an animal rescue centre has led to an unusual career choice for a young Falmouth woman.  Lucy Evans was helping out at the Flicka Foundation Horse and Donkey Sanctuary, at Mabe near Penryn, when she noticed a horse dentist at work.  "Like most people, I had never even thought of dentistry in the context of horses," she recalls. "Until then I had wanted to be a vet, but watching this woman go about her

work just seemed so bizarre; it changed everything for me."  That was six years ago, when Lucy, then 16, had just completed her GCSE exams at Truro School. Now, after three years' specialist training and £40,000 of investment, she has launched her own dentistry service, Equine Dental Solutions, for horses, ponies and donkeys across Cornwall.  At a mere 5ft 4ins and weighing just seven-and-a-half stone, little Lucy often finds her "patients" - some as heavy as half a ton - towering above her.  But nine times out of ten she gets on perfectly well with them - helped by a "gag" placed over the horse's mouth to keep it open and a collar around its head.  Even so, she recognises that injury is an occupational hazard for horse dentists, and even in her training and early business practice Lucy has been no exception.  "I have been bitten and I have been smacked around the head and knocked for six by a horse that was being very boisterous," she recalls.  "You never know how a horse is going to react and you only put the gag on after an initial examination.  "That is when the bites can occur, but most of the time it is just a question of being patient and efficient - building up rapport and applying certain techniques rather than brute strength."  Lucy adds: "Most of the time, a horse already has an issue; they can get real grief with sharp teeth and ulcerations, for instance, and it's reassuring for them when I relieve that pain."  She is not allowed to administer injections or fillings - that's a job for the vet - but she is one of only a handful of practitioners in the South West with a first class BSc (hons) degree in Equine Dental Science.  As well as studying at Hartpury College's equine centre, Lucy has trained with BAEDT-qualified technicians in five counties. She was also selected to work alongside a BAEDT technician doing equine dental work in France.  She had a university research abstract published in the conference proceedings of last year's annual meeting of the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians (BAEDT).  She is now fully insured and able to treat the teeth of all horses, ponies and donkeys.  Lucy sees her role chiefly as improving the dental and oral comfort and overall welfare of the animals by preventing dental problems.  "Horses' teeth continually erupt through their lives, similar to rabbits' teeth," she explains. "Just as with humans, it really is very important for them to have their teeth regularly examined.  "Every horse, pony and donkey should have their teeth filed down ("rasped") if required every six to 12 months, to prevent dental abnormalities."

24FitCamp Falmouth Living  in  one  of  the  most  beautiful  places  in  the  world,  we’re  never  left  short  of  choices  to  get  outdoors  and  enjoy  the  Cornish  lifestyle  of  the  sun  (when  it  shows),  sea  and  sand.  However,  most  of  us  would  like  to  feel  fitter  and  healthier  and  be  able  to  enjoy  it  all  the  more.  This  summer  there  started  a  new  wave  of  fitness  and  fun  in  Falmouth  –  One  that  brought  exercise  to  all  shapes,  sizes  and  ages,  by  being  free  and  offering  a  chance  to  look  at  the  improvement  to  health,  as  opposed  to  just  weight  loss.  24FitCamp  Falmouth  has  had  such  success  and  been  enjoyed  by  so  many,  that  what  started  out  as  a  small  step  for  a  fitter  Falmouth,  has  now  gained  speed  and  is  carrying  on,  beyond  the  summer  sunshine  and  is  here  to  stay.  Every  4  weeks  there  is  a  fitness  test,  to  help  monitor  the  improvements  and  success  of  the  hard  work  put  in  by  all  involved.

Then,  in  true  Cornish  style,  a  BBQ  celebration  is  had  to  offer  medals  to  those  achieving  the  most  success  in  both  fitness  improvements  and  inches  lost.  With  the  option  to  train  at  either  the  early  morning  session  or  the  evening  class  –  being  held  in  and  around  Falmouth,  there  really  is  little  excuse  now  to  get  out,  get  fit  and  start  leading  that  ‘healthy,  active  lifestyle’.  Classes  are  run  by  a  qualified  personal  trainer,  who  can  offer  both  nutritional  and  physical  support  and  advice,  and  with  the  eldest  coming  in  at  62  being  motivated  to  ‘move  more’,  and  the  youngest,  coming  along  for  the  fun  to  run.

There  really  is  something  for  everyone  who  is  looking  to  get  out,  get  fit  and  feel  healthier.  Check  out  24Fitclub  Falmouth  on  Facebook  or  contact

[email protected]  for  more  information  and  to  join  the  next  24Fitcamp.

September   brings   a   busy   month   at   Enys   with   opportunities   for   visitors   to   see  inside  the  house  before  work  continues  on  the  fabric  of  this  Georgian  Mansion.

Enys  is  host  to  Unsettled,  an  exhibition  of  paintings,  drawings,  words  and  actions.  The   participating   artists   and   writers   are   all   lecturers   in   Fine   Art   at   Falmouth  University.   They   are:   Simon   Averill,   Neil   Chapman,   Glad   Fryer,  Mercedes   Kemp,  Neil  McLeod,  Kate  Southworth,  Mark  Surridge,  Roger  Towndrow,  Lucy  Willow,  Lisa  Wright,   Gillian  Wylde.   The   exhibition   in   the   house   runs   for   six   afternoons   from  Sunday   7th   September   through   to   Thursday   18th   September   during   normal  opening  hours

"At   the   heart   of   the   exhibition   are   the   interconnected   themes   of   change   and  dispersal.  Crucially,  Enys   itself   is  not  a  backdrop  for  the  work  but  a  vital  agent   in  the  installation  process;  the  artists  work  with  and  are  sensitive  to  the  house,  itself  in   a   time   of   change   and   possibility,   heavy   with   history,   open   to   newness.  New  kinds  of  spaces  emerge.  Some  of  the  works  align  next  to  each  other  while  others  seek   out   hidden   places,   suggesting   possibilities   for   re-‐reading,   re-‐viewing.   On  another   level,   the   configuration   of   the   show   hints   at   a   longing,   a   quiet  restlessness,  an  unsettled  form." "Unsettled  "  artists  and  writers.

Enys   is   also   host   to   a   colony   of   bats   and   Simon   Barnard,   Senior   Ecologist   with  Spalding  Associates  (Environmental)  LTD,  who  has  worked  closely  with  us  over  the  last   five  years   is   leading   two  bat  evenings  both  on  Sunday   the  14th  and  28th  of  September.  Tickets  for  these  are  £5.00  and  the  evening  starts  at  6.30  pm  with  an  anticipated  finish  around  9.00pm

The   final   Sunday   of   the   season   (September   28th)   sees   an   event   of   a   different  nature,  David  Roskilly,  Chairman  of  Kernow  Old  Vehicle  Club   is  expecting  around  25   of   their  members   to   bring   their   vehicles   on   site   for   a   small   rally   and  we   are  hoping  for  a  beautiful  Indian  summer  to  round  off  the  season.

Preheat  your  oven  to  180˚C.  Lightly  grease  a  23cm  springform  cake  tin  and  line  with  baking  parchment.  Warm  the  milk,  poppy  seeds  and  lemon  zest  in  a  small  pan  for  a  couple  of  mins,  then  remove  from  the  heat  and  leave  to  cool.    Cream  the  butter  and  sugar  in  a  large  bowl  until  pale,  light  and  fluffy  (an  electric  hand  mixer  makes  life  easier).  Beat  in  the  egg  yolks,  one  at  a  time.  Stir  in  the  almond  extract,  flour  and  ground  almonds.    Fold  in  the  courgettes  and  cooled  milk.  Whisk  the  egg  whites  in  a  separate  clean  bowl  to  stiff  peaks.  Add  a  large  spoonful  to  the  courgette  mixture  and  stir  in,  then  gently  fold  in  the  rest,  keeping  as  much  air  in  the  mixture  as  possible.  Pour  into  the  tin.    Bake  for  approx  60  mins,  depending  on  your  oven,  until  firm  to  the  touch;  it  should  spring  back  when  you  lightly  press  the  middle.  Cool  in  the  tin  for  15  mins,  then  turn  onto  a  wire  rack  to  cool  completely.    To  make  the  icing,  sift  the  icing  sugar  into  a  bowl.  Add  the  lemon  zest.  Melt  the  butter  and  pour  over  the  icing  sugar.  Add  the  lemon  juice  and  stir  together  quickly,  adding  a  splash  of  cold  water  if  needed,  until  you  have  a  thick  but  spreadable  icing.  Use  a  pallet  knife  to  spread  over  the  cake.  Leave  for  approx  30  mins  if  you  can,  so  the  icing  can  set  a  little,  before  serving  sprinkled  with  poppy  seeds.
