MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Mary and Parker Hughes
Unlocking the mysteryCHILDREN’S PROGRAMS HELPED MOM COMMUNICATE WITH SON
Your support makes trusted educational children’s programming possible. Thank you. 3KET.org
PARKER IS A BUNDLE OF ENERGY, full of fun, full of interests, and eager to share. He can rattle
off the names of a dozen different dinosaurs and knows everything there is to know about all the trains and vehicles featured on Thomas & Friends.
“There is no better thing in the world for him than the world he is watching in those shows on KET,” said Parker’s mom, Mary Hughes of Floyd County, a friendly, self-described mountain girl devoted to family.
Parker reads fluently and with confidence about his favorite subjects. But it wasn’t always this way.
At one time, the 8-year-old never responded to his name or made eye contact. He stopped achieving developmental milestones such as first sounds or talking.
Her son, Mary says, just disappeared.
“Parker was born in 2006 and he was born healthy,” she said, “but at about the age of one year he no longer communicated. He became silent, he didn’t make eye contact, and he didn’t turn his head when I said his name. I was very scared.”
Doctors thought perhaps Parker was deaf. He underwent tests, and being a young, inexperienced mother, Mary even wondered if she’d done something wrong. Finally, his first diagnosis came back: autism.
“So I guarded him, like a hen on an egg,” she recalled. “I did not want anybody disturbing him, I didn’t want anybody in his face. But I woke up one day and just realized: you are disabling
your child by being so protective, and he’s missing out on fun things because of a condition. Why are you doing that?”
From that time on, Mary decided to give her little boy plenty of experiences and provide him as rich a life as possible. She pointed out the names of everything in his room, she took him to church. She prayed.
Eventually she found a way to reach Parker.
“He watched KET all the time,” she remembered, “and before he could talk, he could hum the Barney song. At first I didn’t understand what it was — I was just happy to hear some sound — but as he got better and better at making sounds, I said, ‘Oh my goodness! He’s singing to me!’ I never will forget that.”
From that basis, Parker’s vocal development began to take off. He began making consonant sounds, and Mary enrolled him in Head Start, where he received speech and occupational therapy.
More and more, Parker’s intense connection to his favorite programs on KET began to give his mother a way to communicate with him.
“KET unlocked my child,” she
declared. She is quick to add that Parker was not “cured” of autism, but notes that his unique needs responded well to the stimulation he received with KET’s educational programs. And a new evaluation has revealed that his correct diagnosis is not autism, but rather high-functioning ADHD, she said.
“With my child, he couldn’t relate to anything around him, there was no ground to communicate with him at all, no tools,” she said. “But then suddenly, we had a place. We had Thomas.”
Parker quickly moved from playing trains (which he still loves) into full-on dinosaur obsession, thanks to Dinosaur Train. Mary, remembering Mr. Rogers from her own childhood, is pleased how much he loves Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. Other favorites include SuperWHY and Peg + Cat.
His interests also include subjects like biology and history.
“The programs he watches on KET gave me a way to get in there and learn how he functions and enabled me to find out what I can do to make his development better,” she said.
“It’s the best thing I ever did.”
“He couldn’t relate to anything around him, there was no ground to communicate with him at all, no tools. But then suddenly, we had a place. We had Thomas.”

Teddy standing over a big-game kill in Africa. Franklin telling a frightened nation it has nothing
to fear but fear itself. Eleanor becoming “The First Lady of the World.” The lives of these charismatic members of one powerful and influential family in American politics is examined by iconic filmmaker Ken Burns in The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, a new seven-part, 14-hour documentary. The first time their individual stories have been woven into a single narrative, The Roosevelts follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States, and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, as well as the role of the United States within the wider world. The series encompasses all the history the Roosevelts helped to make — the creation of the National Parks, the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal, the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights around the world. The mini-series is also an intimate human story about love and betrayal, family dynamics and personal courage, and the conquest of fear. Actress Meryl Streep portrays Eleanor Roosevelt in readings from the first lady’s personal letters and writings; Paul Giamatti is the voice of Theodore Roosevelt; and Edward Herrmann, two-time Emmy Award nominee for his performance as Franklin Roosevelt, is the voice of FDR. Also lending their skills are Patricia Clarkson, Adam Arkin, Keith Carradine, Ed Harris, John Lithgow, Carl Lumbly, Amy Madigan, Pamela Reed, Billy Bob Thornton, and the late Eli Wallach.

Around the world, obesity levels are rising; in fact, more people are overweight than undernourished. In this three-part, thought-provoking series, Jacques Peretti explores the profitable ways eating habits have been revolutionized over the last 40 years. He learns about a sweetener, championed in the 1970s to make use of the excess corn grown by farmers, that is now known to interfere with the hormone that controls appetite; about “supersizing;” and assumptions about what is healthy and what is not.

The Big Burn: American Experience
KET Tuesday, Sept. 9 • 9/8 pmKET2 Sunday, Sept. 14 • 9/8 pm
In the summer of 1910, an unimaginable wildfire devoured more than 3 million acres across the Northern Rockies, confronting the fledgling U.S. Forest Service with a catastrophe that would define the agency and the nation’s fire policy for the rest of the 20th century and beyond. This program provides a cautionary tale of heroism and sacrifice, arrogance and greed, hubris and, ultimately, humility in the face of nature’s frightening power. Inspired by the best-selling book by Timothy Egan.

Penguins: Spy in the HuddleKET Begins Wednesday, Sept. 24 • 8/7 pmKET2 Begins Saturday, Sept. 27 • 6/5 pm
For nearly a year, 50 animatronic cameras disguised as realistic life-size penguins, eggs, and rocks infiltrated colo-nies to record the tough challenges penguins face from the moment they emerge from the sea, to raising their chicks, and finally returning to the water. This three-part special reveals the intimate, emotional, and sometimes amusing behavior of nature’s most devoted parents bringing up their young against the most extraordinary odds. The first program, “The Journey,” focuses on the treacherous treks of three species: the Emperor, Rockhopper and Tropical Humbolt.

‘KENTUCKY TONIGHT’ BEGINS CANDIDATE PROGRAMS FOR 2014 ELECTION
‘Health Three60’ looks at efforts to combat asthmaOne of the most common chronic diseases, asthma is responsible for more than 6,000 hospitalizations per year in Kentucky.
Health Three60 “Easing the Burden of Asthma,” which takes an in-depth look at the often-underestimated chronic lung disease, premieres Monday, Sept. 29 at 9/8 pm on KET.
Many people don’t realize that asthma attacks can be fatal, and poor indoor air quality can often be a trigger.
“People die from asthma attacks.” says Beth VanCleave, the asthma educator at Kosair Children’s Hospital. “I don’t think we take it seriously enough because the symptoms are not there on a daily basis. The number-one myth is that you only have asthma when you are having trouble breathing.”
Health Three60 “Easing the Burden of Asthma” is funded in part by a grant from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.
Breathe Easy
KET continues its in-depth election coverage with Kentucky Tonight programs featuring candidates from select 2014 congressional races.
The first program, featuring the 2nd District U.S. House of Representatives race, airs Monday, Sept. 22 at 8/7 pm on KET. Invited candidates are Ron Leach, Democratic Party, and Rep. Brett Guthrie, Republican Party.

America Graduate Day features KET’s ‘Dropping Back In’The new KET-produced four-part series Dropping Back In, premiering next month, will be highlighted nationally as part of this year’s American Graduate Day, a seven-hour public television event to address the high school dropout crisis. The event airs Saturday, Sept. 27 beginning at 11/10 am on KET.
American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen is a long-term public media initiative, supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), to create awareness of and implement solutions for improving high school graduation rates.

The four half-hour programs, to air on the public TV stations nationwide, share the inspiring stories of individuals across the nation who have overcome the odds, returned to learning, earned their high school equivalency diploma, and changed their futures in a powerful way.

Sincerely,
This month, KET and PBS are pleased to present Ken Burns’ newest film, The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, profiling the extraordinary lives of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor, in an epic new seven-part, 14 hour mini-series event. It premieres nightly on KET beginning September 14, and the following day will be available by online streaming in its entirety at video.KET.org.
This series about the Roosevelt family story pro-vides a front-row seat to incredible, worldwide his-tory. From industrialization, through world wars, and into the human-rights struggle, the film illuminates the change and progress that propels humanity.

Hall passes gavel after 20 years; Nicholson to follow as new Fund chair
A leadership change will soon take place with KET’s non-profit fundraising foundation. John R. Hall, founding chairman of the Commonwealth Fund for KET board of directors and retired chairman and CEO of Ashland Inc., is stepping down after 20 years.
Hall helped launch three endowments, includ-ing the W. Paul and Lucille Caudill Little Endowment for the Arts, the O. Leonard Press Endowment for Public Affairs, and the Endowment for Kentucky Productions. Hall is particularly proud of KET’s original biographies about distinguished Kentuckians — such as the late William T. Young, Sr., the late Sally Brown and, more recently, Ted Bassett — as well as KET’s original production Thoroughbred, which brought the pageantry and traditions of the horse industry to the nation, airing on PBS in 2011.
He will be succeeded by Nick Nicholson, retired president and CEO of the Keeneland Association, who assumes the chairmanship Oct. 29. Hall will remain on the board in an emeritus capacity.
“Few people have achieved such success and commanded as much respect as John and Nick,” said Shae Hopkins, KET’s execu-tive director. “KET’s programs and services are stronger thanks to their tireless leadership, and we are truly grateful.”
