BUZZ Datamatics

Adrenaline junkie, thrill seeker, the ones who live on the edge; no matter how you see them, there exists a little bit of them in each one of us.

Some of us with a stronger heart seek extreme sports, while some can only stomach the adventure rides. The rest get an adrenaline rush just at the sight or at the thought of these.

I fall in the middle category and have had my own share of adventure rides. The sense of euphoria that I experience after adventure rides is unassailable.

The excitement and anticipation of the free falls; an adrenaline rush from spine-tingling, hair-raising roller-coaster rides; it’s that moment when fright gives way to excitement; an experience that pushes us to our limits and a thrilling fleeting moment of liberation!

Whoever said that amusement parks are for kids, was kidding. These rides are for brave hearts!

DATAMATICS SHINES AT 2014 EDGE AWARDSTwo projects involving Datamatics won the prestigious Information Week Edge awards at INTEROP Mumbai 2014. This is the fourth time that a Datamatics project has won an Edge award. Wipro, Infosys and L&T Infotech were among the other prominent winners this year.

The first award was for automating Insurance Policy issuance for ICICI Prudential with the help of iQ. This solution enabled huge benefits both in terms of turn-around-time and human resource optimization. The second project to win the award was one where Datamatics provided an efficient Alfresco based Document Management Solution to help Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) streamline their document management system and build a base for smooth e-governance.

TECHGEEKshoEs with haptic fEEdback

The world of consumer technology is ever changing and the latest trend the industry is abuzz with is wearable technology. An Indian startup company, Ducere Technologies, has created a Bluetooth enabled smartshoe named LECHAL (meaning “take me along” in Hindi) which is responsive to haptic stimuli. The shoe was originally designed for the visually challenged but has now found a wider application. The shoe has a Bluetooth enabled device that syncs up with a smartphone app to use Google Maps for hands-free navigation. The shoes can also be used as a more accurate way to record distance travelled and also come with a calorie tracker and a pedometer.

The LECHAL footwear also comes with something called Smart Assist, which alerts you if your phone is not in close proximity. If you don’t like the style of this new smart shoe, you can just buy the insole which is also fitted with vibration technology and use it in your own favourite shoe.

LECHAL is Ducere’s first product, and is expected to retail for around $100 to $150 this September. They are compatible with Windows phones, iPhones and Android.

Visit http://www.lechal.in/shoes.html for more information on the product.

fuN FACTs

Opened in 2010, the Formula Rossa, located in Abu Dhabi, currently holds the crown of the fastest roller-coaster in the world and propels riders to a staggering speed of 150mph in just 4.9 seconds using technology similar to aircraft carriers when they need to launch jets into the air.

The concept for roller coasters was first conceived in 15th century Russia, where they constructed slick ice slides between seventy and eighty feet tall and hundreds of feet long that people rode on sleds. Usually sand was used to slow the riders down at the bottom. Sometimes this worked, sometimes it didn’t!

At 17 stories, the Verruckt waterslide opened in 2014 in Kansas City, Kansas; is taller than Niagara Falls.

Tivoli Gardens in Denmark is one of the oldest operating amusement parks in the world. It opened in 1843 and was reportedly one of Walt Disney’s inspirations for his parks. The park’s first proprietor, Georg Carstensen, got permission from King Christian VIII to build the park by saying, “When the people are amusing themselves, they do not think about politics.”

The “Most Track Inversions on a Roller Coaster” record goes to The Smiler at Alton Towers in the UK. Thrill-seekers brave enough to ride get inverted 14 times.

Richard Rodriguez set the record for “Longest Marathon on a Roller Coaster” by riding the Pepsi Max Big One in Pleasure Beach, UK, for more than 405 hours! The record required he ride continuously during park hours (about six hours a day) for 112 consecutive days.

The first Ferris wheel was designed and built by George W. Ferris, a bridge-builder from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia for the 1893 World’s Fair, held in Chicago to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s landing in America. The Chicago Fair’s organizers wanted something that would rival the Eiffel Tower built by Gustave Eiffel for the Paris World’s Fair of 1889, which honored the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.
