MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL IMPORTANT DATES
Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Community Members, During the first month of school, our teachers welcomed their students, set expectations and assessed their students' needs. Kindergarten teachers held their orientation for parents and guardians. Kindergarten students learned about our school plate lunch and played with their peers during recess. They also met our office staff and support teachers. Open House for Grades 3-‐5 students was held on August 25th. Our PTA emphasized the importance of joining and supporting the organization which provides vital support for our school and students. Parents/guardians and students visited their classrooms. Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2 Open House will be held on Wednesday, September 10th, from 5:45-‐7:30 p.m. A Kindergarten Family Gathering will be held on September 26th. It is being organized by Mrs. Salazar, our PCNC and the Kindergarten teachers. Student Council Officers and leaders represented our school before the Kaimuki Neighborhood Board. They did a wonderful presentation featuring our school programs. Mahalo to Leila K., Viveka L., Victor L., Emily B., Takeo S. and to their parents for joining Mrs. Matsushita and I at the event. A special thank you to Mrs. Bullock for the pictures and DVD of their performance and the goodie bags! Last school year we were fortunate to receive a $8,000 Wellness Grant from the Department of Health. The grant enabled our school to educate students, teachers/staff and families about the importance of healthy eating and keeping physically fit. We were able to purchase additional health and physical education equipment. Our school believes in educating
the "Whole Child". An important aspect of our philosophy is establishing the relationship between wellness and the effect on student learning. During the previous school year, we also received $75,000 for being a DOE Recognition School! We were informed we will continue to be a Recognition School this school year, however newly identified Recognition Schools will receive the monetary award. The 2014-‐15 SY brings additional good fortune to our school. We received a Marshall Hung Realty Grant for $7,000 to fund our Kindergarten and First Grade IPAD labs. We kindly ask parents/guardians to plan their vacations during the Fall, Winter and Spring Breaks. The DOE tracks each student’s attendance record in a computerized system and students having more than fifteen days of absences are considered chronic absentees by the system. Kokua by having a doctor's note if your child is ill for extended days. Good attendance is vital to your child's academic growth. All students will be on Fall Break from Monday, October 6th thru Friday, October 10th. Students return on Monday, October 13th. Winter Break will be three weeks long and Spring Break will be held for one week. Congratulations to Mrs. Iwanaga and Mrs. Uehara! They gave birth to healthy baby girls. Message from your Parent Community Networking Center (PCNC) BY Iris Salazar
Welcome back to school everyone! And welcome to our Kindergarteners and their families to Liholiho! I'm looking forward to a great school year filled with excitement.
For those parents new to Liholiho, and for some who are not but still curious, I’m a parent of a Liholiho graduate and got my start at the PTA as a Donations Chairperson. I have held the position of Parent-‐Community Networking Center (PCNC) Parent Facilitator for the past 14 years. I still serve on the PTA board as a PCNC Parent Facilitator. I work closely with parents, teachers, principal, school staff, community members and other parent facilitators within the Honolulu district to provide the best educational experience for all of Liholiho students.
I'm pleased to announce that our two wonderful volunteer moms will continue to help out with our Box Tops For Education and Labels For Education programs. Mrs. Kimber Kahanu will take care of the Box Tops For Education program and Mrs. Vicki Bunao will take care of the Labels For Education program. Both programs will generate resources to support out students and teacher. Please see their articles in this issue for details.
First event for our Kindergarteners after the Open House will be Kindergarten Family Gathering on Friday, September 26 at 5:45 p.m. in the cafeteria. The purpose of this event is to promote fellowship as we get to know each other. Sometimes we make new friends and sometimes we reconnect with old friends. The invitation is open to our Kindergarteners and their immediate family members. A flyer will be sent home so please sign up and join in the fun!
I'm always recruiting for volunteers to help our teachers and students. We have an on-‐going weekly Wednesday group that meets at 9:00 a.m. in the
PCNC room. The volunteers will make copies, collate, staple pages, trace and cut out patterns, and other tasks that assist our teachers with projects which students will work on. Contact me if you are free on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. so you can come and join us.
This year, you will find me in my room on Mondays and Wednesdays during regular school hours from 8:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. with occasional Tuesdays and Fridays as schedule allows. Please contact me via email at [email protected] or by phone at 733-‐4859 or 733-‐4850.
Aloha,
Iris Salazar

Message from your PTA Presidents BY Shayna Kusumoto & Alan Aloiau
Hey, Liholiho ‘Ohana!
Hope everyone enjoyed the summer break and could not WAIT to come back to campus. Well, the 2014-‐2015 school year kicked off to a fantastic start this year with our festive, bustling Welcome-‐Back-‐to-‐School-‐Night (that’s a mouthful!) on July 30th. We had two rockin’ open house nights already, and three kindergarten classes that are raring to go at Liholiho!
We are Shayna Kusumoto and Alan Aloiau, and we’re honored to be this year’s Liholiho Laulima PTA co-‐presidents. Our goals this year are to help Liholiho continue in their stellar track of growth in educating the whole child.
One thing we love and appreciate about this school is how the teachers, staff and families come together as one big ‘ohana to do amazing things for our kids. We have such wonderful families who give their time, talent and treasure, and we couldn’t do it without each one of you.
Each year, the PTA supports the school by raising funds that pay for things that the state doesn’t or can’t pay for. Our fundraising dollars help to support our IXL math and KidBiz reading programs, the new filtered water fountains you see around campus and the awesome fish playground last year! These things aren’t just nice-‐to-‐haves, they are essential to our school’s continued success.
Our goal for each student is $100. We are going to offer something new this year. You will be sent a letter giving you the option to donate that target amount per child and opt out of other fundraisers throughout the year. We hope to make it easier for busy families so that you can
make your donation up front rather than bracing yourselves for the onslaught of mini-‐fundraisers. Please also consider giving this target amount through Give Aloha, September 1-‐30 at any Foodland or Sack ’n Save.
Our keiki are worth it. They deserve our very best and as your PTA officers, we are committing our best efforts to them and to you.
Aloha,
Shayna Kusumoto Alan Aloiau Liholho Laulima PTA Presidents

Fundraising Chairs BY Derek Sayegusa, Ko Kuroda and Kristy Tong
September 1-30, Give Aloha to Liholiho School!
What is the Give Aloha Program? Give Aloha is a donation program that benefits schools of choice. During the month of September, when you shop at Foodland you can donate to Liholiho. Western Union and Foodland will match part of every donation. Why make a Give Aloha donation to Liholiho School? Donate through Give Aloha to Liholiho to retain current teachers, staff, and programs, and provide your child(ren) with good education and safety. If every Liholiho family donates $100 (maximum of $249 for each Maika‘i card holder account) in September when shopping at Foodland, we will be able to raise enough funds in 2014-‐15 to pay for:
• Part time teachers, which allows for smaller class sizes
• KIDBIZ 3000 literacy program, which has helped raise reading test scores at Liholiho
• Lunchroom Supervisors • Physical Education, and Music
programs and teachers When Can I Donate? You can donate to Liholiho any time you are shopping at Foodland between September 1st -‐ 30th, 2014!
How do I participate? Present your Maika‘i Card at any Foodland checkout or customer service desk and tell the cashier that you would like to make a donation (cash, check, charge or debit card) of up to $249 to Liholiho Elementary School, Organization Code #77919. If you don’t have a Maika‘i card, simply give your phone number to the cashier, who will process your donation and arrange to have one provided for you later. ASK THE CASHIER TO GIVE YOU TWO RECEIPTS that will include: the amount you donated to Liholiho School. Keep the original receipt for tax deduction purposes and attach the other copy of the receipt to the class donation form. The class donation forms will be sent home on September 1st. Your child and your child’s class will get credit for every receipt attached when the form is returned to the homeroom teacher. Am I the only person who can make donations on behalf of our family? No, your relatives, friends, or neighbors can also donate to Liholiho School when they shop at Foodland. They should give you the copy of their receipt, which you can attach to your child’s class donation form and have your child get credit for the donation.

Hey, did you know September 14th is the 200th anniversary of the Star -‐ Spangled Banner?
In 1814, about a week after the city of Washington had been badly burned, British troops moved up to the primary port at Baltimore Harbor in Maryland. Francis Scott Key visited the British fleet in the Harbor on September 13th to secure the release of Dr. William Beanes who had been captured during the Washington raid. The two were detained on the ship so as not to warn the Americans while the Royal Navy attempted to bombard Fort McHenry. At dawn on the 14th, Key noted that the huge American flag, which now hangs in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History was still waving and had not been removed in defeat. The sight inspired him to write a poem titled Defense of Fort McHenry. The poem was eventually set to music that had originally been written by English composer John Stafford Smith for a song titled "The Anacreontic Song". The end result was the inspiring song now considered the national anthem of the United States of America. It was accepted as such by public demand for the next century or so, but became even more accepted as the national anthem during the World Series of Baseball in 1917 when it was sung in honor of the brave armed forces fighting in the Great War. The World Series performance moved everyone in attendance, and after that it was repeated for every game. Finally, on March 3, 1931, the American Congress proclaimed it as the national anthem, 116 years after it was first written.
