President’s Message By David Aldana The year was 1975

The population in Edmonton was 451,635. The Edmonton Coliseum opened in November of 1974, and 1975 was the first full year of operations. The Heritage Festival started in 1975. Some of us were young and full of energy.

The Edmonton Oilers record was 27-49-5 (59 points), finished 4th in the WHA Canadian Division and lost in the Quarter-Finals (4-0) versus the Winnipeg Jets. The coaches were Clare Drake and Bill Hunter. The Edmonton Eskimos finished in 1st place in the Western Conference with a 12–4–0 record and won the 63rd Grey Cup over the Montreal Alouettes.

The most popular TV shows were “The Six Million Dollar Man,” “M*A*S*H,” and “Hawaii 5-0.” “Wonder Woman,” “Starsky & Hutch” and “Saturday Night Live” all started in 1975. Hollywood’s blockbusters were “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Jaws” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”

Hairstyles were quite varied, from long to short in length, and incorporating flicks, layers, curls and bubble perms. Also common were the shorter pageboy, shag and wedge styles. In fashion, polyester was the material of choice and bright colours were everywhere. Men and women were wearing very tight fitting pants and platform shoes. The jumpsuit was a huge success.

Some camera companies released new models that reflected a ‘downsizing’ of the SLR cameras. For example: Canon unveiled the

long-awaited professional camera, Canon F-1.

Minolta released the SrT 201 SLR camera that was built like a tank.

The Pentax K2 was the flagship model of the camera trio Pentax.

Olympus released the OM-2.

Steven Sasson, an engineer at Eastman Kodak, invented and built the first digital camera using old movie camera parts and a bunch of digital and analog circuits wired together (see below).

The music charts were topped by “Love Will Keep Us Together” from Captain and Tennille, “Philadelphia Freedom” from Elton John, “My Eyes Adore You” from Frankie Valli, and “Jive Talkin’” by the Bee Gees. Tom Jones performed a concert with The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, which was deemed “The Event of the Year.”

And Images Alberta Camera Club

was born ...

Food, dancing, music,

more volunteers than you

ingredients for one of the

best summer festivals in

Edmonton–Heritage Days!

Colleen typically tries to

spend at least one day

down at Hawrelak

own pleasure. This year,

however, she entered a

competition for former

students of the Burwell

School of Photography to do

some shooting for The Servus

and was one of three

chosen. Her "official" status

allowed her to do some

'behind-the-scenes' shooting

Taken at Astotin Lake, located in Elk Island National Park.

John had taken a student from Japan, who he was hosting, to see the bison. There were no bison but there was another incredible sunset. John was particularly drawn to the sharp geographic profile of the clouds to the right of the island and striations of various colours.

John posted two versions on Flickr but it was the second, cropped version that received the most attention—over 9000 views and it was featured in Flickr's Explore.

One of the main reasons I switched to a DSLR from a pocket-sized point-and-shoot was my disappointment with the quality of my bird photos. So, when I heard there was going to be an outing with a bird photographer to learn some tips and tricks for this craft, I immediately signed up. I was thrilled to be selected as one of the 10 IACC members who would join Gerald Romanchuk and Steve Knight at Beaumaris Lake on May 14, 2014. As the day progressed, I watched the sky with trepidation—were those dark clouds going to drop the rain they carried right on the event I had been waiting for? The group met in front of the Castledowns Library at 6:00 p.m., with dark clouds still overhead, but as yet no rain. Although the lighting was less than ideal, we were still able to spot a nice variety of birds, and get some great tips to apply on our own future bird hunts. Some of the key hints I picked up that evening were: get down, get down, get down. Shoot at the bird’s level, rather than standing up above. The pictures are much more interesting and powerful. Be patient, stay still. A bird that flies away will often immediately circle back to right where it left from. If you are patient (something I always struggle with) you might get a great landing shot!

After about an hour of shooting, the group headed back in to the library to look at some pictures and learn some editing tricks. There was a lively discussion about the best way to crop a photo, and the end conclusion was that it’s really a matter of personal preference, as well as deciding what story you are trying to tell with your image. The light-hearted camaraderie between Gerald and Steve really set a great tone for the evening, allowing everyone to relax and have a good time. If you are interested in shooting at Beaumaris, here are some of the birds we spotted: Canada Geese (including at least one set of

hatched goslings) Mallards Red-Necked Grebes Lesser Scaup Tern (of some variety) House Sparrow Ring-billed Gulls Black-billed Magpie. In the past, I have also seen a group of American White Pelicans and a pair of Double-Crested Cormorants. Gerald told us that, occasionally, a local Great Blue Heron will stop by to visit.

Report from the IACC Treasurer

By Vincent Morban

To be discussed briefly at short Annual General Meeting, which will be held on September 25, 2014 (IACC

Competitions Night).

Page 15

September 2014 Imagery: Images Alberta Camera Club — Edmonton, Alberta, Canada www.imagesalberta.ca

In trying to discover the beginnings of Images

Alberta Camera Club (IACC), I went out to lunch

with three of the old timers who where there at

the beginning—Saul Rabinovitz (with the basso-

profundo voice); Bill Wyshynsky (with the

amazing memory); and Hans Hildebrandt, former

owner of Carousel Photographics on Jasper

Avenue. Even on the phone getting organized for

the lunch, the stories started to flow.

In the early days, Peter Wong used to bring his

old Sayer projector for competitions, but it used

to eat up all the slides. Bill W. would only bring

his third-best slides. He used to win with them.

Wanting to show some of his better slides, Bill

stuck his neck out and personally bought a

Kodak projector for $360 (big money in 1973).

He loaned it to the Club until the Club could

afford to buy it from him and he would recoup

some of his investment. When the Club finally

raised the money, his warrantee was almost

finished so Helen MacArthur (then president)

went down to Carousel and bought a brand new

one leaving Bill out of pocket!

Or the time that Saul Rabinovitz was IMPEACHED

for submitting a slide that didn’t fit the category.

He was told it was wallpaper, and he decided the

judge was right! It would make good wall paper.

Bill W. had been to Hawaii with a new camera

and his pictures weren’t great so he decided he

needed to learn. He figured that “taking bad

pictures costs just the same as taking good

pictures.” He saw a notice in the Edmonton

Journal and decided to join the Club.

Hans was a fairly new immigrant to Canada,

having started but never having finished a

photography apprenticeship program in

Germany, so he signed up at NAIT for its new

photography course and graduated in the 2nd

graduating class in 1967. He worked at Storleys

on 105th Street for six years and bought Storley

out when he retired in 1973. Hans began

Carousel Photographics in the basement of

10525 Jasper Avenue under the Seven Seas

restaurant. Mo Constantine was a good customer

of his and they got together with Helen

MacArthur, Bill Wyshynski and Peter Wong and

decided that there should be a camera club in

town.

Their first meeting was in a little room at the

Midtown Hotel on 5th Street and 100th Ave.

Mo became the president, and Bill was put in

charge of Public Relations. He had never heard of

Public Relations before so went to the library and

got four books on the subject, read them and

managed to boost the membership to 16 by the

end of 1976 and 39 by the end of 1977.

Time Travel: History of IACC

By Mufty Mathewson

“Or the fact that Flo Duggan

came for two years, brought

cakes and prepared the coffee,

and didn’t even own a camera

for all that time.”

Page 16 September 2014 Imagery: Images Alberta Camera Club — Edmonton, Alberta, Canada www.imagesalberta.ca

In 1978, the Club was going to fold. Lack of interest

and interpersonal disagreements were happening,

so Bill W. said maybe the Club is going to fold, but

the $400 will stay in a bank account for IACC. Well,

people were loath to give up that $400, made up

their differences and kept the Club going.

And listen to this! At the beginning they had a dress

code. NO blue jeans and NO PANTS for women!

Some men even wore ties to the meetings!

Bill Wyshynski remembers the first outing; a walk

from Emily Murphy Park to the High Level Bridge

with a naturalist from Toronto, who found a seam

of white volcanic ash running along the North

Saskatchewan River from Crater Lake in Oregon.

Apparently it covered the North West for hundreds

of miles in the 1800s.

The Club has had many homes in its history. First

members met in the Midtown Hotel on 105th Street

and 100th Avenue, then at the Provincial Museum,

Prince Rupert School, a school east of Westmount,

King Edward School, John Janzen Nature Center and

Allendale School.

Saul Rabinovitz bought his first camera through

Sears Catalogue when he was stationed 800 miles

north of Winnipeg at Lake Lynn. He used to mail his

film in to Winnipeg and they would mail the prints

back or for his slide film he used the Kodak yellow

bags that came in the box with film to pop into the

mail for Vancouver. When he moved to Edmonton

he went downstairs to Carousel and learned from

Hans about the new Camera Club that was just

starting. He thought that would be a good way to

meet people so he became Membership Chair.

(Saul was the first person to warmly welcome me to

a meeting in 1978.)

I had begun planning this outing with Max Wilke,

the only original Images member who is still with us;

however, at the last minute, he wasn’t able to make

our meeting. Max Wilke tells me that he was

walking through the downtown library and saw a

notice saying “Film Club Starting.” He loved taking

pictures and had done so for many years, so he

thought this is a good idea! First meetings were at

the library. Possibly Donna Fong was there. I know

she designed the newsletter IMAGERY logo with the

film strip (see below)across the top that won us

so many prizes in newsletter competitions over

the years.

This is how Images Alberta Camera Club came

about.

I plan to interview as many of the old timers during

the coming year as I can find and write a piece for

each newsletter. If you are in touch with a former

member, (better than OLD member!) please let me

know. If your memory has a different version of

some of the stories, please call me so that we can

record as many versions of what we remember. We

need it all.

Thanks Hans, Bill and Saul. It was great seeing you

again!
