Nothing brings a community together like the spirit of pride Growing up in the Ralston school district our family was always involved in some activity whether it was cheering on our peers helping our neigh-bors or rooting for the home team

As I have matured my pride has grown to encompass all of Omaha I am proud of the people in this city and the strides we are taking as a whole I want other cities to see how great we are

Pennants have been traditionally used as commemorative flags and trophies for sports teams I encourage you to create your pennant to celebrate what you are most proud ofmdashwhether it is a sports team vacation spot

institution or your favorite personemsp

MATERIALSbull 30rdquo x 12rdquo strip of colored feltbull 12rdquo x 12rdquo strip of white felt (or a contrasting color)

bull Scissorsbull Liquid starchbull Spray adhesivebull Printer paper

DIRECTIONS1 Cut out a 30 x 12 triangle of colored

felt to act as the background of your pennant Stiffen the felt by soaking it in liquid starch Wring out the liquid and lay it somewhere flat to dry

2 Once the felt is completely dry iron it to get it nice and wrinkle free If you are concerned about burn-ing the felt use a press cloth

3 Hop on the computer and try out some different fonts to see what you like After you have typed out the name that you would like on your pen-nant manipulate the letters so they get slightly smaller as they go to the right

4 Print out the name and see how it looks in relation to your pennant If it looks correct cut out each individual letter with scissors

5 Place paper letters upside down on the white piece of felt and trace them lightly with a pen Placing them upside down will ensure that you do not have any pen marks on your final letters

6 Place felt letters onto the pen-nant and arrange them as desired Pick each individual letter up off the pennant spray the back side with adhesive and press it onto the pennant in the correct place

7 Cut out a 1rdquo strip of white felt to run along the left side of the banner spray with adhesive and press it onto the colored felt

THERE ARE 2584841 ACTIVE GEOCACHES AND OVER SIX MILLION GEOCACHERS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD

8emspHerFamily bull July 2015 omahamagazinecom

ACTIVITY by Danielle Herzog

ldquoDo you see it Are we closerdquo

My children looked feverishly around as my husband held out the GPS app on his phone

while stepping over branches and tree stumps The leaves crunched under our feet as we walked through the St Columban Retreat Centerrsquos grounds to find a hidden treasure

No we werenrsquot seeking lost gold or looking for my keys

We were geocaching an activity in which participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location

The sport has grown quickly along with the technologymdashthe increasingly affordable tech-nologymdashthat has made it possible According to Geocachingcom the most-popular website dedicated to the activity there are 2584841 active geocaches and more than six million geocachers throughout the world

Gone are the analog days in which you had to navigate your way with compass and maps Now with apps specifically for geocaching and GPS management families can pick the level of difficulty and type of terrain they want to explore

For our first adventure we picked tasks that rated a measly 15 on the 100 scale We thought finding the canisters would be a breeze And two out of the four times it was But even after 20 minutes of search-ing we found that we struggled to find the others We followed the directions even read the clues included but quickly real-ized that some things take a bit more time and experience

We are hooked We already have a plan to go back out to the caches we missed and are determined to find them on our next day off

And we arenrsquot alone

Omaha has its own group dedicated to geo-caching in Nebraska Nebraskache has more than 500 members of all ages throughout the state Their Yahoo and Facebook groups are members-only though all are welcome to join They post their favorite caches organize group outings and even share clues and tips to finding the ldquotreasurerdquo

Brady Holmes 37 an experienced cacher who works as a change-control technician for Dell in Lincoln started caching in 2011 ldquoFor me it was a way to start exercising I cached every other weekend and then I became extremely addicted and ended up caching every day for over 450 days My first year I found over 2000 cachesrdquo

Although that number is on the high end many people are hooked right from the start

Kia Itsen 38 an insurance industry staffer says itrsquos an adventure her whole family has loved since they first started in 2014 Her 10-year-old daughter is now finding the caches herself and loving every minute of it Itrsquos not the amount of finds that attracts her but rather where the journey takes them ldquoThere are many caches in Nebraska and geocaching takes me to so many places I would have never gone to otherwiserdquo

The activity has gotten so popular in Nebraska that the state recently won the bid for the 2015 Geocoinfest which will be held at Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland on Oct 3 This traveling event will offer sessions on geocaching while also having an expo for products and supplies as well as a kidsrsquo area to introduce children to the activity

So whether you go as a family with friends or out on your own geocaching is giving people an opportunity to experience new places while challenging them and leaving them wanting moreemsp

TIPS FOR THOSE NEW TO GEOCACHING

1 Join ldquoNebraskacherdquo on Face-book or through Yahoo groups Go to events where you can meet other people who geo-cache and would be interested in going together

2 Start simple Go for the big easy ones at first then stretch your abilities gradually

3 Bring a pen There are log sheets in the canisters and yoursquoll need something to sign your name with

4 The name of the cache is often a clue to its whereabouts

5 Canisters come in all sizes Sometimes it takes several trips to a place before catching on to how they are hidden

SPEAKING UP AS MAYOR OF BOYS TOWNJennifer Nguyen

HerFamily bull September 2015emsp11bestofomahacom

YOUNG HEROby April Christenson photography by Sarah Lemke

Jennifer Nguyen is bright and soft-spoken Sitting in the living room of her family teachersrsquo home on the Boys Town campus the high school senior thoughtfully considers her answer before explaining why she chose to run for mayor of Boys Town

ldquoThis is my homerdquo Jennifer says after a moment ldquoI want to give back to Boys Townrdquo

In May the 17-year-old was elected the 115th mayor of Boys Town Nguyen and Vice Mayor Tessa Miller are only the second female mayor-vice mayor duo in Boys Townrsquos history

Nguyen wants to serve the community her home since she was 12 that has done so much for her After she graduates from high school she would like to attend Wayne State College and study business The future looks bright but it wasnrsquot always quite like this

ldquoBEING ABLE TO ROLE MODEL FOR OTHERS IS REALLY NEAT TO MErdquo -Jennifer Nguyen

ldquoIt was toughrdquo Nguyen says ldquoFor a while I wasnrsquot sure Irsquod get past junior yearrdquo

Her family teachers Scott and Kim Kavanaugh affirm her statement saying they have seen a remarkable change in her over the past four and a half years they have known her Like many kids her age Nguyen had trouble in school and her grades suffered but she turned things around in a remarkable way

ldquoWersquore just so proud of herrdquo Scott says ldquoShe strives for excellence in every-thing she does It was tough there for a while but now she gets upset when she gets a Brdquo emspgt

ltemspStill when Nguyen first told them she wanted to run for mayor the Kavanaughs were a bit surprised Itrsquos a lengthy selective process Nguyen who has always been a little reserved and reluctant to speak up in a group would have to give a speech before the entire student body

ldquoWe asked her lsquoDo you really want to do thisrsquordquo Kim says

But Nguyen was sure

ldquoEver since we were in eighth grade my friends and I talked about itrdquo she explains It was something she really wanted and she was willing to put herself out there to accomplish it

With help from the Kavanaughs Nguyen got endorsements from her teachers and community director They created posters and pamphlets She prepared to address the entire student body And on May 5 the students voted and Nguyen was elected the 2015-2016 mayor of Boystown She says she hopes other students will see her as a positive example

ldquoBeing able to role model for others is really neat to merdquo she says

In addition to her new role as mayor Nguyen is captain of the soccer team and a member of the color guard student council junior ROTC and National Honors Society Even with a busy schedule of school and extracurricular activities she believes making time for service to others is important

ldquoJennifer has always been a person who gives backrdquo Scott says ldquoShe sees the needs of othersrdquo

Boys Town founder Edward J Flanagan conceived its student gov-ernment system as a way for students to build character citizenship and a sense of community In Nguyen that legacy lives on

ldquoI want to make Boys Town feel like home for all of the students and encourage everyone to get involvedrdquoemsp

5 Canisters come in all sizes Sometimes it takes several trips to a place before catching on to how they are hidden

ldquoBEING ABLE TO ROLE MODEL FOR OTHERS IS REALLY NEAT TO MErdquo -Jennifer Nguyen

ldquoIt was toughrdquo Nguyen says ldquoFor a while I wasnrsquot sure Irsquod get past junior yearrdquo

Her family teachers Scott and Kim Kavanaugh affirm her statement saying they have seen a remarkable change in her over the past four and a half years they have known her Like many kids her age Nguyen had trouble in school and her grades suffered but she turned things around in a remarkable way

THERE ARE 2584841 ACTIVE GEOCACHES AND OVER SIX MILLION GEOCACHERS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD

5 Canisters come in all sizes Sometimes it takes several trips to a place before catching on to how they are hidden

ldquoBEING ABLE TO ROLE MODEL FOR OTHERS IS REALLY NEAT TO MErdquo -Jennifer Nguyen

ldquoIt was toughrdquo Nguyen says ldquoFor a while I wasnrsquot sure Irsquod get past junior yearrdquo
