College Counseling News from Mrs. Pitts This is a very busy time for seniors! Students should have college application lists determined and be aware of important dates and deadlines. Juniors and seniors are allowed three days of excused absence for college visits. Parents must call Mr. Chilles office, D36, to excuse students. If seniors have not registered to take SAT/ACT please do so now. I strongly suggest that seniors take both tests. Colleges will take the highest score from either. It is very important that students send scores to the colleges when they register to take the tests. Four free score reports are included with the price of registration. I have fee waivers for eligible students. The December test dates are the last dates that seniors can test. Students can begin to work on the UC application now. This year, for the first time, there are new Personal Insight Questions. Students must respond to four short answer prompts from eight options. Each answer is limited to a maximum of 350 words. These statements are a very important part of the application; students should work to write meaningful and insightful responses. The application cannot be submitted until November 1st with a November 30th deadline. The CSU application period opens October 1st. There is no personal statement required. The deadline to apply is November 30th. Private colleges have varying deadlines. Students must check deadlines individually. Letters of recommendation are required. For counselors, the deadline to request a letter of recommendation is November 1st. Three weeks advance notice is required. There are application workshops scheduled at Beyer to help students fill out applications throughout October. For students applying to private institutions, there is a mandatory Common App workshop on October 6th. Students must sign up with me for all workshops. MJC will be here to host application workshops for all students who plan to attend. The date and time will be announced soon. NO SAT or ACT is required for students attending a junior college. Financial Aid has big changes this year. For the first time, seniors and their parents will be allowed to file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) on October 1st. You will use your 2015 income tax to file. Go to www.fafsa.gov The deadline to file is January 1, 2017

meal program eligibility and other restrictions specified in law.3. Paying the replacement cost for District books or supplies loaned to a

8. Charging for the parking of vehicles on school grounds.9. Fees for school camp programs, so long as no student is denied the

opportunity to participate because of nonpayment of the fee.10. Reimbursement for the direct cost of materials provided to a student for

possession and use, such as wood shop, art, or sewing projects kept by the student.

11. Reimbursement for the actual cost of duplicating public records, student records, or a prospectus of the school curriculum.

16. Fees for an optional fingerprinting program for kindergarten or other newly enrolled students, if the fee does not exceed the actual costs associated with the program.

17. Fees for community classes in civic, vocational, literacy, health, homemaking, and technical and general education, not to exceed the cost of maintaining the community classes.

18. Deposits for band instruments, music, uniforms and other regalia which school band members take on excursions to foreign countries.

A Message from ABS Leadership With it being a month into school already, the ASB Leadership class has been working hard in planning out events for the entirety of the year. As of right now, they are focused primarily on planning for Fall Homecoming which will be October 10th-14th. As a class, they have been deciding on Fall Homecoming week activities and dress up days. Each of the individual class officers and class representatives have been planning out the logistics for Fall Homecoming Floats. The Club/Elections committee have been preparing for the Fall Homecoming Elections (October 11-12), and the Activities/Spirit Commissioners have started planning for the Homecoming Rally and Royalty Ceremony that will take place on October 14th. Aside from Fall Homecoming, ASB Leadership has been busy planning for many other events as well. The Community Service committee has been planning for the first Blood Drive which is September 15th. A giant powder puff game will be held on October 5th, and the ASB Executive Board has started planning for the Veteran’s Day Ceremony on November 10th. The Senior Class officers and representatives have been busy planning for senior year festivities, like Senior BBQ (October 13). The Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior class officers and representatives have started planning for class fundraisers, as well as filling orders on class t-shirts. Stay tuned for more updates!(Written by ASB Secretary Jason Leung)
