September 2017
“Welcome Back to School” from Mrs. Lee the Teacher Librarian in Meadows School Library! It promises to be another
exciting year here at Meadows with some Book/Author events already in the works.
The library has had a transformation this summer! There are new tables to brighten up our space and about 100 new
books that were donated through our application to the Indigo Love of Reading grant. The first “read aloud” has been
“I Am A Story” by Dan Yaccarino. It was dedicated to Mrs. Wright on her retirement, so we enjoyed imagining what
Mrs. Wright would be doing instead of teaching at Meadows!
Students will start borrowing books on Day 6, September 13th. Kdg to Grade 4 students can expect to borrow 1 book
at a time and Grade 5 to 8 students can borrow 2 books. We track books carefully each 6 day cycle, so please support
your child by helping them to return or renew books once you have enjoyed them at home. Books are usually due after
a week. An “overdue” book means that a child cannot borrow another book until the “overdue” is returned.
Thanks to Library Volunteers; Kathy Oman, Sharon Spak, Maureen Stitt and Lu-Anne Kruk for helping to scan and
count over 8000 books on Monday, September 11th. If anyone reading this is interested in being a volunteer in the
library, contact Mrs. Lee! There are many fun jobs to be completed.
Grade 7/8 Library Volunteers:
These students volunteer during morning recess and help out with re-shelving, tidying, preparing new books, helping
out with Book Fair and numerous other small jobs!
There will be a sign up sheet on the Library Circulation desk and students are only required to attend one noon hour
training session. They need to bring a lunch and plan to stay for the entire lunch hour.
“Lunch Hour Bring a Lunch” Training is Thursday, September 21, Day 6. Mrs. Lee will set another lunch training af-
ter this one if needed.

TERRY FOX WALK
Join us for our annual fundraiser for the
Terry Fox Foundation on Thursday Sept
28 at 2:35 pm. We will walk the perimeter
of the playground, weather permitting, in
honor of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. This
year, Meadows School is setting a goal of
raising $500. That is $1 per person, which
is something Terry had asked of Canadi-
ans. If you wish to donate to his cause of
finding a cure for cancer, please send your donation
with your child to school. We have a “Change for
Change” jug for students who wish to donate to can-
cer research.
Thanks very
much!
Options (Shop/Home Economics)
Starting September 8th, DAY 3, A.M.
Grade 7- Home Economics at Earl Oxford or River-
heights
Grade 8- Industrial Arts at Harrison, Riverheights or
Earl Oxford
Students arrange own transportation. Free City Bus
Transit Passes provided by Brandon Transit. BSD bus
students are dropped off at Riverheights and must
arrange their own transportation back to Meadows.
LUNCH INFORMATION
We are asking parents/guardians
to remove any nut products from
your child’s lunches and snacks. If
you send sandwiches with Wow
butter could you please mark the
sandwich, so we know it does not contain peanut but-
ter. We have students with serious nut/peanut aller-
gies. The best way to ensure a safe environment for
these students is for all parents to be dutiful and
carefully pack their children’s lunches and snacks
free of peanut products.
Here are some healthy alternatives that are nut
free:
Breadsticks, crackers, pita bread, muffins
Raw vegetables and dip
Yogurt, pudding
Chicken pieces, cold meats
Cheese and crackers
Please do not send items that require heating as stu-
dents do not have access to microwaves.
Students that go home for lunch should not be
returning until 12:40.
Your cooperation is appreciated!
2017 FALL MAGAZINE CAMPAIGN
Parent Council major fundraiser starts: September 2017. Welcome back students & parents! The kickoff date for our Annual Magazine Fundraiser with QSP is Sept 21st. This is our major fundraiser for the school. The mon-ies raised go to classroom funding, field trips, awards day, artist in the school and so much more! Our campaign will run from Sept 21st—October 10th. Lots of great new prizes and parties for the top 2 classrooms! We sold over 430 subscriptions in 2016 and would love to surpass this number for 2017! If each stu-dent brings in 1 magazine order we would reach our goal! SCENT-FREE POLICY
Brandon School Division has a scent free policy. Stu-
dent, parent and visitors are asked to refrain from
wearing perfumes, colognes, hairsprays and deter-
gents to school.
STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP
Students should be dropped off and picked up in the
designated areas in front of the school on 22nd
Street or the north parking lot. Please do not use the
bus loading lot, south staff parking lot or the back
alley. (It has come to our attention that some of our
Meadows students are being dropped off in the back
alley way south of the school. This is not only unsafe
for our students but an interruption to our neighbors.
The staff at Meadows School want our students to be
safe as well as be good community members.)

21st Century SECRET Skills
Meadows will be focussing on continuing to teach our students
21st Century Skills using the SECRET Skills
21st century skills are a set of abilities that students need to develop in order to succeed in the
information age. They include knowledge (things you know), skills (things you can do), work hab-
its (how you work), and character traits (who you are). These skills are super important for EVERY-
ONE to be a success in today’s world.
At Meadows, we will use the SECRET Skills to teach our students these important 21st Century
Skills. SECRET is an acronym and includes the following skills - Self-management; Effective
Participation; Creativity; Reflective Leaner; Enquiry and Team Work. When you put the letters
together they spell the word SECRET!
Each skill also has a mascot or symbol to go along with it to help us remember them.
Here is more information about each skill.

Wear ORANGE Sept. 29th
Because
EVERY CHILD MATTERS!
On Friday September 29th, Meadows School will be honoring Residential School
Survivors by wearing orange and paying tribute to Indigenous culture.
The color orange was inspired by Phyllis, whom in 1973 was told she could not
wear her new orange shirt at school and was made to change into a plain shirt.
We wear orange for Phyllis and for all Residential School Survivors because
EVERY CHILD MATTERS!
What does the Guidance Counsellor do?
I work for the students! Teachers and the Guidance Counsellor work as a team with the goal of promoting a sense of belonging for all.
Guidance Counsellors provide leadership opportunities for youth, including facilitation of Youth Revolution.
When students visit the Counsellor, we communicate with on another, draw pictures, listen to music, complete hands-on activities, and learn new strategies to practice at home
and school. The Counsellor works with students individually, in small
groups, or in classes. I am here to work with EVERYONE, not
just some students.
Students are welcome at any time! Parents can contact Mrs. DeDecker at 1.204.729-3971
