When I die, what will happen to my retirement plan benefits? August 16, 2017
In general, your retirement plan benefits pass to the beneficiaries you designate on the plan beneficiary designation form. It is generally recommended that you designate beneficiaries, the percentage of the total that each will receive, and any backup beneficiaries on the plan beneficiary form. However, if you are married or have been married, your spouse or former spouse may have certain rights in your retirement benefits. If you have a large taxable estate (generally, over $5,490,000 in 2017), your retirement benefits could be subject to estate tax or generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax at your death. The GST tax may apply if you transfer your retirement benefits to someone who is two or more generations younger than you, such as your grandchild. After your death, your beneficiaries will generally be required to take minimum distributions from your retirement plan over their life expectancies. (Of course, your beneficiaries can always withdraw more than the required minimum amounts.) The rules may be more favorable if your surviving spouse is the beneficiary of your retirement plan. In general, for income tax purposes, your beneficiaries will include distributions from the retirement plan in income when received. Your beneficiaries can take an income tax deduction for estate tax (if any) attributable to the retirement plan benefits; the deduction is apportioned and taken into account as distributions are received and included in taxable income. If you have made any nondeductible contributions, your beneficiaries can generally exclude a portion of the distributions from taxable income. However, if you have not made any nondeductible contributions, the entire distribution will generally be included in the beneficiary's taxable income. On the other hand, distributions made after your death from a Roth 401(k) plan or a Roth IRA will generally be qualified distributions that are not taxable income to your beneficiaries (as long as certain five-year holding periods are met).

The Inspire Central Wisconsin initiative brings together education and industry to help students and job seekers achieve their goals and address communities’ workforce development needs. Inspire Central Wisconsin provides powerful tools for students and job seekers and adult career searchers, community businesses, educators, and local system administrators.
In an initiative aimed at addressing Wisconsin’s workforce development needs, all nine of the state’s regional economic development organizations have teamed up to develop a statewide platform that directly connects local employers to students. In the Centergy region, that includes the Marshfield area in Wood County, MACCI is leading the effort.
Centergy and MACCI, with support from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DP), will expand the use of a web-based platform called Inspire that virtually connects area businesses to their future talent pool through online profiles, virtual career coaches, and career based learning activities for high school students and educators.
What should I know about Inspire? Inspire is a cloud-based platform that enables collaboration among all community partners in preparing youth to
transition from school success. Inspire integrates seamlessly into Career Cruising for grades 6 to 12.
Inspire connects education and industry with employer profiles, career coaches, work-based learning experiences, communication tools, local events, and social networking connections in a safe and secure platform.
Students engage with employer profiles to see how their pathways connect with businesses and organizations in their community. Students can ask questions of real working people in their community, learn about apprenticeship opportunities, and see upcoming employer-hosted events.
Employers can connect with students and share information about the work they do and skills they need. They can also target students with profiles that match their needs, all on a secure platform that protects students.
Community members can serve as pre-screened mentors to offer real-time career advice and answer students’ questions about the real world of work.
Where do I access Inspire? Participating in Inspire is easy! To access and register your business on this cloud-based platform, visit Centergy’s website to enter Inspire’s employer portal at http://www.centergy.net/workforce/inspire_employers.htm. Upon selecting a username and password, you’ll begin to establish your company profile. The company profile can describe your business, highlight unique attributes, and communicate areas of need to future employees. Upon completion of the company profile section, career coach profile, submittal and approval of a background check, you are now ready to receive and answer communications on your company message board. The message board is monitored by administrators to ensure a safe environment.
I’m Inspired but need some assistance! Have no fear, help is always available. MACCI’s workforce development director Karen Isaacson has attended training sessions, set up a company profile and is now a career coach. She will also be the Inspire Administrator for the Marshfield area businesses. Contact her at (715) 384-3454 or email [email protected] for more information.
Inspire is set to go live in the school districts on October 1, 2017. Therefore, don’t wait to get your company registered or you may be missing out on connecting with your future workforce!
