September 2017

Legacies are so important...

Race to Scotland

Thank you toMr & Mrs Williams See why on page 3

Income from legacies has always been

an important source of funding for us

here at Oakhaven. As an organisation

we are very reliant on this form of

income to make up the shortfall

between the cost of running our

services and fundraising initiatives

and donations.

In addition, so much of the vital development

of our services would simply not have taken

place without legacy income. Initiatives such

as our very successful Hospice at Home

service and the redeveloped and refurbished

Day Hospice building at Pennington Chase,

plus our new In-Patient Unit link building

would not have happened without being

underpinned by legacy income.

This last financial year though has been a

poor one in this respect with both the

number of legacies we have received and the

amounts received quite significantly down,

which has seen us having to dip into our

reserves. All well run charities have reserves

of course for the proverbial 'rainy day'; it is

simple prudent good housekeeping.

While this current financial year is showing a

better return on legacies so far, it is very

important that we maintain the drive and

constantly remind our supporter base of the

importance of legacies to us. Consequently,

our supporters will notice more frequent

reminders over the coming years just to

reinforce that message.

We are always so grateful to those kind

people who leave us a gift in their will; it is a

wonderful and poignant gesture and makes

such a difference. It can also be great news

for the other beneficiaries, as a gift to charity

in a will, can have benefits in the potential

reduction of the amount of inheritance tax on

the balance of the deceased's estate.

That leads us of course to the big question –

will you consider leaving us a gift in your will?

It will ensure we really can continue to

“Make every moment matter”.

You will see further on in this newsletter

that we have not received as many

legacies this year as we have in the past.

Legacies of any size are vital for

Oakhaven Hospice - they help us to

continue providing all of our services free

of charge. Leaving a legacy in your will is

the perfect way to help to make a

difference and to leave something of

real value to the whole community. It is

also a very tax-efficient way of giving, as

gifts to charity are exempt from

Inheritance Tax. If you pledge at least

10% of your estate to charity, you will

also benefit from a lower rate of

inheritance tax on the remainder.

There are many challenges that have

been achieved for Oakhaven by our

supporters and all of them are special

to us. I would like to mention in particular

the supreme effort made by Ken Fowler,

who single handedly sailed his RS Aero

dinghy from Land's End to John

O'Groats and has, so far, raised over

£30,000, to be split equally between

Cancer Research and Oakhaven.

Recently, our Bereavement Cookery

course was featured on BBC South

News and is a part of the development of

the health and wellbeing aspects of our

community engagement work. In

addition we are developing services in

The Coates Centre for support groups

specifically for patients with a Brain

Tumour; Dementia; and Heart Failure as

well as other life-limiting conditions.

We are developing our Neighbours'

project and expanding this community

work over the coming months. The

proposals are in the early stages,

however, it is hoped that a revised

scheme could be operational by the end

of the year.

We have recently opened the “Eatery”

café for staff, volunteers and visitors. We

are very grateful to our sponsors for

providing the catering equipment,

carpentry skills and time to create this

new area. I would also like to thank the

volunteers who man the counter and the

till. This new facility has brought in

additional revenue already and is proving

to be very popular.

Last year, 'força strength against cancer'

launched 'Nourish by força'. The aim is to

provide delicious meals to local people

undergoing chemotherapy treatment at

Oakhaven Hospice. All meals are freshly

prepared on site by the Oakhaven

Hospice catering team; vegetarian

meals are on offer and most dietary

preferences can be catered for. All meals

are financed by 'força' – strength against

cancer. We are now in negotiations with

'força' to provide meals for our Day

Hospice patients.

I remain extremely grateful for the

tremendous level of support we

receive from our donors, sponsors,

volunteers and staff, without whom

none of our services would be

possible.

We are very proud that all of the services that the hospice offers

are free for people to access. The annual cost of providing these

services is over £4 million. Almost all of this cost is raised through

the support of the local community and we need your ongoing

support. This could be from shopping in our retail outlets,

attending events, playing the Hospice Lottery, leaving a gift in

your will (a legacy), corporate partnerships, donating and your

community events and challenges.

Keith’s Story...

The training went surprisingly well and fundraising was much

easier in the internet world than when I last traipsed round with a

form and had to go up to people asking for money. I decided that

as this was important to me, I would email as many friends,

colleagues and clients as I could. They didn't have to say "no" if

they didn't want to help, just not reply.

I was amazed by the response. So many people said they had

been through a similar experience and how much hospice care had

helped them and their families at such a difficult time. At that point

though, I did not yet fully appreciate quite what they meant.

A few short weeks later, I understood only too well. When Dad

spent his final days in the amazing care of Oakhaven, I discovered

two unexpected benefits of having done the Oakhaven half

marathon. The first was when Dad suddenly asked how we were

paying for all the expensive care he was receiving. I was able to say

that our friends and family had already made a contribution.

The second was that my email about fundraising subtly told

everyone I knew that Dad was ill. So, when I had much more

upsetting news, and had to take time off work, no one had to ask

why and I already had their sympathy.

“ The run was hard and the weatherwas terrible, but I was very glad to be able to say I had done a bit to helpOakhaven, given the massive amountthey did for my Dad and my family. I'm very proud to have raised justover £6,000.

“Goodbye Julie & Roger

It really was the end of an era when the fundraising team said a

sad farewell to Julie Eyre and Roger Old; this intrepid pair had

been the departments collection box counters for 18 and 15

years respectively.

At a presentation to the two of them Jill West, Community

Fundraiser, thanked them for their outstanding contribution to

Oakhaven and calculated that they had counted in the region of

£200,000 over those years.

Good luck Roger & Julie and thank you for everything;

we will miss you.

In January a number of local businesses signed up for the

challenge and were each given £100 by The Beaverbrook

Foundation. They were asked to multiply that sum over

the following six-months by devising and implementing

fundraising ideas and donating the profit from them back

to the hospice.

“The Challenge was a great way for businesses to show

entrepreneurial flair, bond with teammates and improve

organisational and communications skills” said

Oakhaven's Head of Fundraising & Communications Mike

Denny. “There were some marvellous, creative ideas

including a sponsored weight loss programme, rides in an

Aston Martin, competitions, a spring fayre, recycling,

raffles and BBQs to name just a few”.

The Challenge has raised £14,000 to date and some of

the participating businesses got together at Oakhaven

recently to hand over their profits. “We would like to

extend our thanks to all the companies who took part and

to The Beaverbrook Foundation for supporting us” said

Mr Denny. “We are now looking for more local companies

and business to take part in the £100 Challenge 2018

which will kick off in January, again supported by The

Beaverbrook Foundation.”

The 2017 participants were New Milton Sand & Ballast

who won the prizes for top fundraisers and best

teamwork, True Savings (Rob Barras) who won the prize

for connecting with the community, The Roman Group

who won the prize for the best innovative idea, Banco

Fleet, Diamond & Son Funeral Directors, Rosie Lea Tea

Rooms, The Three Tuns (Bransgore), Two Counties

Cleaning, Kew Electrical, Eric Robinson Solicitors,

Freedom Childcare and Beach Huts 'n Boats.

Coates Centre Celebratesits 3rd Birthday !

In 2014 the Coates Centre was opened as a place from

which Oakhaven could connect more extensively with

the community and become a focal point for the

community to engage with Oakhaven. By doing so, it

extends Oakhaven's reach beyond palliative care and

into the realms of living well.

In the first year of opening, the Centre had around 1,500

visitors, today this has risen to over 4,000, many of

whom take part in the wide range of wellbeing and

social activities that are on offer. There is an increasing

number of people who are living with a life-limiting

illness, caring for someone with complex needs, are

elderly, bereaved or simply lonely - and the Coates

Centre welcomes them.

The Centre prides itself on being open to all those

impacted by illness, with no referral required and you

can live in any postcode area. The Centre provides a

place where you can meet and gain support from others

in a similar situation. A range of new Support Groups

have been developed in the last twelve months in

collaboration with local organisations. These have

proven very popular and include Respiratory, Advanced

Cancers, Heart Failure, Brain Tumours and Dementia.

Speaking about the future of The Coates Centre, Carol

Canning, Head of Support Services, said “Public

expectations of health and social care services are

changing. Government provision is moving toward

positive 'strength' based thinking, for people to feel in

charge of their own lives.

The future success of The Coates Centre and

Oakhaven's overall engagement with community is to

focus on collaboration and partnerships that enhance

existing links and forge new ones. By doing so,

Oakhaven can develop a community where living life

well matters most and, at the time of need, also provide

the very best of care, making every moment matter.”

In a year packed with 25th Celebrations for Oakhaven, there is another smaller but significant milestone tocelebrate... In October, it will be three years sincethe opening of The Coates Centre.

*It’s not all about tea and cake! Last year in numbers...

• 4,000 visitors to The Centre

• 2,500 took part in activities/groups

• 1,500 called in to The Hub

• 15% travelled more than 10 miles

• 20% came for a chat, 1 in 5 stayed over an hour

• £11,194 donations received – thank you!

• 12,000 brochures distributed to 200 locations

And, we estimate we get through 1,150 cups of tea 385 cups of coffee and 200 slices of cake every month!

Ken Fowler’s Epic Race to Scotland

With glorious scenery and many

adventures along the way, including

becalming twice and being rescued by the

RNLI and encounters with seals, dolphins

and whirlpools, Ken completed the

challenge in June. Alongside Ken were his

support crew Ian and Jane Pike who were

invaluable to the challenge.

Raising over £35,000 to be split between

Oakhaven and CRUK, it was an amazing

achievement and ended with a

presentation evening by Ken at the

Christchurch Harbour Hotel, where he told

the whole Race to Scotland story – a

fascinating tale!

Ken sailed over 900miles up the coast in a small RA Aero dinghy - only 4 metres long and weighing just 30kg.

A number of people have done crazy things to raise money for

Oakhaven with many setting out on really extreme challenges

but Ken Fowler’s “Race to Scotland” project was truly

inspirational. He was not the first to travel from Land’s End to

John O’Groats but he was certainly the first to do it for us by

sea. His plan to sail over 900 miles up the coast in a small RS

Aero dinghy - only 4 metres long and weighing just 30kg -

captured the imagination of us all.

Ken had just 30 days to complete the challenge as he had to be back at

his ‘day-job’ as an Air Traffic Controller, having taken his entire years

annual leave to undertake the adventure. Inspired by the loss of his late

father when he was just 24 and the more recent loss of his mother-in-

law - both of whom he had pictures of in the dinghy - Ken took on this

epic challenge with gusto and determination.

Volunteers – we couldn't do it without you!Hospices have always (traditionally)

relied heavily on volunteers. Today

there are 125,000 volunteers in

hospices around the country,

contributing in excess of £112

million in terms of the value of their

work. In 2016, our 440 volunteers

gave approximately 88,878 hours to

Oakhaven, saving the Hospice

about £676,560 in labour costs.

Volunteers are in every department,

supporting patients, families,

visitors and staff.

Administration

There are admin volunteers supporting

Counselling, Finance, Community

Engagement, Physiotherapy,

Complementary Therapy, Day Hospice,

HR, Fundraising, the Clinical team,

Chaplaincy, Education, the Coates

Centre and of course, Volunteer

Services. Each of these teams relies on

their admin volunteers to take on some

of the day to day tasks that are so

time-consuming, freeing the staff to do

other things.

The Coates Centre

Our Coates Centre volunteers keep the

Centre open Monday-Friday 9-5. They

offer support and information to anyone

who pops in. Some visitors are recently

diagnosed, others are living with a

terminal condition, while some are

supporting a loved one through a serious

illness. If you've seen a Coates Centre

brochure in a local surgery, library or

shop, a volunteer put it there!

Patient-Facing

This is probably the most visible group

of volunteers at Oakhaven - volunteers

who directly support Oakhaven patients

and families.

Retail and Fundraising

Whether marshalling, manning stands,

selling cakes, toys, cards or tickets,

counting money, distributing and

collecting donation tins or jumping out of

airplanes, fundraising volunteers are vital!

Within fundraising, we also have

volunteers who act as ambassadors for

Oakhaven. They accept donations on

Oakhaven's behalf and give talks on the

work that we do.

Our shop volunteers, meanwhile, are

hard at work in our six shops sorting and

cleaning incoming donations (not always

a pleasant task!), arranging merchandise

displays, and serving customers.

Gardening, Maintenance, Kitchen

Our volunteer gardeners can be found

hard at work in the Hospice grounds on a

Wednesday morning, in fair weather and

foul, keeping the place beautiful for

everyone who comes here.

We also have volunteers supporting the

Facilities and Physio teams. These

volunteers clean physio equipment and

get it ready for reuse, repaint and fiddle

with (technical term!) the garden

furniture, paint and decorate, do repairs,

maintain the Oakhaven vehicles, and are

generally very handy people to have

around! And finally, we’d like to mention

the volunteers helping in the kitchen,

supporting the Catering Team with

preparing salads, sandwiches and other

bits for the Eatery.

To all our volunteers, thank you - we

couldn't do it without you!

Events Round-Up...

We celebrated Father's Day with a difference this year as 40

brave individuals took on the challenge of abseiling 100

metres down the side of the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.

There was glorious weather to make the most of the stunning

views over the Solent and Dockyards.

With nerves and excitement in abundance we had a great day

raising just over £19,000 for Oakhaven.

Thank you to everyone who took part and to all the generous

family and friends for sponsoring them.

Abseiling Challenge

With a full field of 28 teams for the

Oakhaven Golf Day held at Barton-

On-Sea Golf Club the day was filled

with good golf and a lot of humour.

As the participants sat down to dinner

they were regaled by stories from

Eddie the Eagle Edwards about his

desire, triumph and struggles to

represent Britain in the Winter Olympic

Games in Calgary.

The winning team from Dunford

throughout the day was fantastic, with

everyone thoroughly enjoying the Golf,

Jamie Adams our Magician and the

year’s event on 13th May 2018

– put the date in your diary.

We returned to Netheravon near Salisbury in May to

hold our 7th annual sky diving day. This year saw 23

brave individuals take to the sky and tandem sky dive

from 14,000 feet. The weather was glorious with only

one short weather hold meaning everyone had

completed their jump by mid-afternoon. An exhilarating

challenge which everyone enjoyed raising just over

£18,000 for us. Thank you to everyone who took part

and all those who so generously supported them.

If you would like to take to the skies next year

Forget-Me-Not Appeal

This year to celebrate Oakhaven’s

25th Anniversary we launched a

very successful Forget-Me-Not

Appeal which raised £37,394.

Each of the beautiful 1,000

flowers were handmade by the

leading UK tiles manufacturer

Johnson Tiles. The limited edition

ceramic Forget-Me-Nots were on

display in the Hospice gardens for

one week at the end of April until

the official launch of our 25th

Anniversary year on 7th May.

This was also the day of our

celebratory Forget-Me-Not Cream

Tea event, which was a sell-out

afternoon and included plenty of

tea, cake and sunshine!

Kindly sponsored by Thesis

Asset Management, guests were

able to enjoy their cream teas in

the splendour of Oakhaven’s

gardens whilst admiring the

Forget-Me-Nots.

Our Dining Divas events are as popular as ever and over the past

year our ladies have lunched at the Captain's Club in

Christchurch, The Mill at Gordleton, Stanwell House Hotel in

Lymington and the ever popular Montagu Arms in Beaulieu. Our

guest speakers have included Sophie Neville, local resident and

childhood star 'Titty' in the classic film Swallows & Amazons,

local New Forest magician Jamie Adams and Barton on Sea

based chef Fiona Hill, who has cooked for royalty all over the

World. Our ladies always enjoy a delicious lunch, followed by a

raffle, with entertainment from our guest speaker.

Dining Divas

At the beginning of July we welcomed the

Berkshire Brass ensemble to St Thomas

Church in Lymington for a special evening of

music and song, which also included the

ladies of Lymington Choral Society,

conducted by Michael Goldthorpe, and

organist Martin Penrose.

The whole evening was a spectacular

performance of music and song and was

enjoyed by all. Our special thanks go to

Berkshire Brass who initiated the evening, St

Thomas Church, Lymington, which was a

perfect setting for such an occasion and also

Daphne Johnston for her musical expertise

in bringing the Gala Concert together.

Sway Open Gardens

This was another wonderful

event made possible by the hard

work and generosity of everyone

involved with the Sway Open

Gardens project.

We extend huge thanks to the

organising committee, who

kindly opened up the garden to

the public, making the whole

thing possible. So much work

goes on for so many months in

the lead up to this amazing

community spectacle which

once again raised an amazing

sum of money for Oakhaven;

over £10,000 this year.

Specials thanks also to

members of the Oakhaven

fundraising team and some of

our brilliant volunteers who were

rushed off their feet running the

tea rooms right through the day.

Oakhavens first Forest Half Marathon took place on

Sunday 5th March, nearly 300 runners took part on the

course, which the Southampton University Air Squadron

marshalled brilliantly. Despite the hail showers, spirits

were high with Adam Jundi and Valeria Sesto completing

the course to take the overall male and female titles.

Many thanks to all of our sponsors Hoburne, Caldwells

Estate Agents, Co-op Funeralcare, Yacht Consultancy,

our hosts Brockenhurst College and all of our wonderful

volunteers who made this event such a huge success

and helped us raise over £11,000.

New Forest Half Marathon

Oakhaven will be making this an annualevent - so keep a lookout for our 2018 date!

Hospice to Hospice Walk... and two (very) personal stories

The second Hospice to Hospice Walk was a resounding

success with over 100 walkers travelling between Lewis

Manning Hospice in Poole along the coastal path back to

Oakhaven (25 miles). Special thanks to the Bournemouth Rapid

Relief Team who ran and sponsored the half-way house at

Mudeford (fabulous food and refreshments). There were several

groups walking, many in memory of friends and family, but we

must make special mention of the lovely Laura MacGregor and

her team; who raised nearly £3,500 with the event overall raising

well over £11,000 with sponsorships still coming in.

The event was very poignant for a number of walkers

and one of them Marion Hewitt summed it up as follows:

“My much loved Dad spent his last week in Oakhaven

Hospice. He died on 2nd April. I spent much of that week with

him and realised how privileged we were as a family that Dad

received care and kindness which ensured his last days were

peaceful and pain free. Privileged seems a strange choice of

words for end of life care but we were very aware that not

everyone coping with terminal illness has this.

My attention was drawn to the Hospice to Hospice walk as a

way I could contribute. I do a lot of walking so I wasn't unduly

concerned about the distance and there aren't many hills

along that stretch of coast! I was most uncomfortable about

asking people to make donations. However, I rationalised that

I wasn't asking people to give me money and as I said when I

sent out the request to people, I think the last time I asked for

sponsorship I was at school many years ago!

The day of the walk dawned with clear blue sky, which

changed to heavy rain as we set off. Fortunately, this was brief

and the rest of the day was dry, if rather windy. There was a

camaraderie about the day, particularly when you started to

meet people walking the route in the opposite direction. We

were well looked after with refreshments provided at check

points and were greeted at Oakhaven with a glass of fizz, tea

and cakes which were all welcome. It was then really pleasant

sitting in the garden sharing the experience.

My fundraising total has now gone over £1,000 which is

amazing and made the fairly tired muscles a very small price

to pay!”

A message from Marion's Mum: “From the time my

husband was referred to Oakhaven, the medical, emotional

and spiritual care we received has made a very painful

experience bearable. There is no way I can adequately repay

everyone concerned but what we can do as a family is

contribute in different ways to help make this care available to

others. We have made our gratitude to Oakhaven known as

widely as possible and as a result, the donations in my

husband's memory have been very generous.

Not being young enough or fit enough to undertake the half

marathon or hospice to hospice walk like my children, my

other contribution has been to ensure that in sorting out my

husband's possessions, everything with any value has been

given to the Oakhaven Shop. I did not want to off-load

unsuitable items so I was surprised to be told that the Shops

can use anything and everything (except kitchen equipment

which did not apply anyway). Nothing is wasted and I have

been glad to pass to them things which we might otherwise

have sold ourselves”.

Our bi-annual luncheon at the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes was once

again a resounding success. With some 150 guests enjoying a

sumptuous meal in the most elegant of surroundings and coupled with

breath-taking views it was no wonder the day was a hit with everyone. Our

thanks to Elisabeth Lady Amherst and her hard working committee for

running such a magnificent event which this year raised some £42,000.
