Those of you who have walked the corridor in the Wellness Center near the Sunny Treasures shop have seen the ongoing construction in the area. Possibly the light was on in the shop and you could see the

freshly-painted walls. As I write this in mid-August, there is no firm date for reopening; however, mid-September seems likely. Keep in mind there will be a flurry of activity in restocking shelves and replacing merchandise. In the meantime, you who will be commencing Fall housecleaning, can begin setting aside items to donate. Repeatedly, you have been told that jewelry is always welcome and that is so; but think about other small items: tweezers, screwdrivers, measuring tapes or a flashlight. How about stationery? Kitchen-wares sell well. Although Sunny Treasures does not sell clothing, it does offer scarves, handbags and belts.

Christmas is coming. Maybe you have a wreath to donate or a Christmas serving plate, a nutcracker or a crèche you are ready to part with. Perhaps you received a game as a gift and don’t play it anymore. Possibly, you never even opened it! Somebody else might want just that.

You’ll be bringing your plants back inside. Do you find you have spare crockery or extra plates for under the pots? Do you have more mittens or pillow covers than you can use? We have a new store. It could use a fresh array of items.

There will be NO First Friday Furniture Sale in September. Instead, both the furniture bins (open from 8 am– 11 am) and the Yard Sale (8 am– 11 am) will occur on Saturday, September 16th. A special Yard Sale Preview Sale for residents and staff will be held from 3 pm - 5 pm on Friday, September 15th.

The Store by James Patterson is based on a mega store

that can supply and ship anything you desire directly to

your door. Sound familiar? When a pair of

investigative reporters go undercover to explore

exactly how the “Store” operates, the excitement

begins. The secrets they uncover are unsettling and

justify their worst fears.

Music of the Ghosts by Vaddey Ratner, a survivor of

the Khymer Rouge in Cambodia, is a moving portrayal

of lives interwoven by loss, Buddhist wisdom and

redemption. The novel confronts age-old questions of

guilt, regret, loss, and shows the impact of traumatic

history on families and the nation. But she is careful to

leave us with hope for renewal and

redemption.

Our Short History by Lauren Grodstein is an

unforgettable story about parenthood, sacrifice, and life

itself. It’s the story of a woman planning a future for

her son after her death and finding that her son wants

something very different. He wants to meet the father

he has never known. Unfortunately, the only thing she

cannot bring herself to do—let his father become a

permanent part of his life— is the thing he needs from

her the most. Written with wit, insight and heartfelt

emotion.

Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann is the

story of the making of the modern FBI and an amazing

investigation of a shocking series of crimes. With the

discovery of oil in the 1920s, some of the richest

people in the world were members of the Osage Indian

tribe in Oklahoma. Then, one by one, they began to be

killed off in a shocking series of crimes. Based on

years of research and startling new evidence, the book

is a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction, as each step in

the investigation reveals a series of sinister secrets and

reversals. One of the Best Books of the Year.

Fierce Kingdom by Gin Phillips is both a suspense

filled novel and a moving story of a mother and child.

On an ordinary visit to the Zoo with her four-year-old

son, the pleasant afternoon becomes her worst

nightmare when a group of gun men stalk the

remaining visitors. Trying to stay hidden and protect

her child invokes the primal bond between mother and

son as the clock ticks down hour by hour.

Idaho, by Emily Ruskovich. A little Barbie shoe under a

seat in the truck; a book on “How to Draw,” behind a

bale of hay---poignant reminders of Wade’s former

family---inspire Ann’s search for what happened to them,

and fill her with love and compassion for this quiet,

caring man who is her husband, and whose memory is

beginning to fail.

Before We Were Yours, by Lisa Wingate, tells two

stories: There is Avery Stafford, of an old Southern

family of impeccable ancestry, who, while helping her

senator-father deal with just-discovered cancer, and her

grandmother to adjust to a retirement home, finds

evidence of unknown people in the Staffords’ past. Then

there is Rill, living happily at home on a riverboat with

her parents and four siblings. When an emergency

temporarily leaves the children alone, they are kidnapped

and made victims of an exploitation racket---which leads

to the connection of the two stories.

The Lying Game, by Ruth Ware, is about the “fun” four

fifteen-year-girls have sealing their own relationship by

concocting lies to unsuspecting classmates. Although

akin to the old trick of sending the naïve freshman on a

“snipe hunt,” these lies are more elaborate, more hurtful

to their victims, and, in the face of a tragedy, disastrous

for the liars themselves.

LARGE PRINT

The Alice Network, by Kate Quinn, is a novel set in

1947. Along with many trying to find loved- ones

missing since the War, Charlie (short for “Charlotte,”)

sets out to find her cousin, Rose---last heard from in

letters from Limoges, France. Acting on a tip, she finds a

gaunt, bitter woman, Eva, whose fingers appear to have

been broken, and who, at first cynical about Charlie’s

quest, finally agrees to join Charlie for her own reason---

to find out the fate of her comrades in the Alice Network,

an organization of women spies for the French Resistance

against the Germans.

The Nearness of You, by Dorothy Garlock, finds Lily,

bored with hometown Hooper’s Crossing and an

over-protective father, craves excitement and almost runs

away to New York City. What stops her is the big

Harvest Festival coming up. As it turns out there is plenty

of adventure at home: A thief and a safe cracker try to

make off with the community’s festival funds, and a

veteran LIFE photographer named Boone shows up,

making Lily’s life very interesting indeed.
