Outsmarting Stress You're familiar with the symptoms of stress — a
pounding heart, increased perspiration, tight neck
and shoulder muscles, anxiety, and fear. But you may
not know how to prevent or relieve these symptoms.
Stress can be triggered by events, ideas, memories,
emotions or failed expectations. The following actions
can help you counteract the negative effects of stress,
according to wellness experts at the Canyon Ranch
Health Resort in Tucson, Ariz.
Exercise
Keep communicating
Pay attention to your diet and habits
Make time for laughter and fun
For more information on this and other topics, visit our EAP at www.FirstChoiceEAP.com and enter cwu as the username. Please feel free to call Human Resources at ext. 1202 with any questions.

~Stephen Sarchet
I’ve told my wife more than once that I love
her hands. When I see her working on some-
thing, or reading, or when she’s just playing a
game on her phone, I find myself tickled by her
little mannerisms that make her who she is.
And I do still feel a small thrill of emotion every
time she takes my hand. Maybe that sounds a
little sentimental coming from a guy, but we’ve
been together for thirty-three years and the
feeling is still there. Our story is still being told.
Sometimes I’m
aware of oth-
ers being
drawn into our
story or wit-
nessing little
pieces of it as it’s being told. I’ve listened as my
wife tells people we’ve come to know little
snippets of our story and watched as they take
in the story of us. And just as I know they are
now part of our story, we are part of theirs in
small ways.
We know sto-
ries of sons and
daughters who
have cared for
their own
mothers and
fathers. Who have found the courage to be the
strong one now, to be the one who puts on a
brave face so their own mom can make it
through one more treatment and know she’s
not alone.
We hold the stories behind the memories of
our children close to our hearts. We are part of
the stories they
will tell their
own children
some day, as
scary as that
may be. We hold
on to stories of
first words, first steps, first days of school, and
of the little boo-boos and real scares along the
way. We remember the feeling of hope we felt
for their futures every time we held their
hands.
Everyone has a story. Sometimes we are invit-
ed in to each other’s stories and sometimes we
are witness to them. Our stories are what
make us. Either way, I know my story goes on
every time I hold my wife’s hand.
