UNITED WAY’S TOOLS FOR SCHOOLS
NUT ALLERGIES
Just a reminder that we cannot have any nuts/tree
nuts in our school. Please make sure when making
lunches or sending snacks, that there are no nuts; that
your snack is made in a nut free factory; and your
snack does not say ‘may contain traces
of nuts’. As well, please remind your
children to not share their food.
Thank you
Volunteers with the United Way Brandon and District
delivered school supplies for Tools For Schools.
Thank you to the United Way volunteers and to our
community members for donating these supplies!
We have new patrols on
once again this year and
could driver‘s please be
patient with them.
Thank you!
PATROLS
LICE
We would like to make our families aware that head
lice maybe a problem during the school year. We en-
courage you to check you children weekly. We will be
checking children at school as back up. If you do find
lice please contact the school at 204-729-3946.
Dear Meadows Families,
Hello there! My name is Ian Carkener, or Mr.C, as I
have the students call me, and I am your new Meadows
Vice Principal! I feel like I am “following in footsteps”
as my office is the same office occupied by my father-
in-law when he was the VP here in the late 70’s. I am
very excited to join the Meadows School community.
I am entering my 24th year in teaching. I have taught
in several different locales, from a remote fly in com-
munity, to small rural schools, to inner city situations.
For the past 16 years I have been a member of the
Fleming/Earl Oxford School community. I was the
grade 6 teacher, the interim Principal, and for the
past 7 years, the Vice Principal. My wife is a grade 1
teacher, my daughter has just started her journey to
be a Veterinarian at the U of M in Winnipeg and my
son is in grade 11.
I believe in our students and our teachers and assis-
tants. Every child deserves access to a quality educa-
tion to meet their unique needs and desires. I ask our
students to: Be Respectful of every person in Mead-
ows School, Be Responsible for their actions, and Be
Safe on our grounds and travelling to and from school.
My door is always open for conversation, advice and
concerns. You can reach me at 729 3987 or email at:
I look forward to working with you and your family to
provide the best possible learning experience for eve-
ryone. Here’s to a great year of smiles, laughs and
especially learning!

BRUCE AUSTIN LIBRARY
Meadows School had 2 separate Summer Reading op-
portunities;
1. K to Gr. 6 students were each given a pink Sum-
mer Reading Brochure in their report cards.
2. Interested Grade 5 to Grade 7 students bor-
rowed up to 4 library books to take home and
read over the summer.
13 students returned the pink Summer Reading Bro-
chure and took part in a “celebration” in the library
with Mrs. Lee on Monday, September 10, 2018. Each
of these 13 were given a book, snack and drink. They
also had a chance to share the title of their favorite
summer read. Way to go summer readers!
The second summer reading program allowed 30 inter-
ested students to take home some Meadows Library
books for the entire summer. Gr 5 to Gr 7 students
read their books and then returned them along with a
simple book review and a 1 to 5 STAR rating. A recess
celebration took place with iced tea a snack and then
each participant choosing a book prize and receiving a
certificate.
Photos of the students and their books and reviews
are on display in our library.
Kevin Sylvester is a Canadian Author
Kevin Sylvester will be visiting
Meadows School on Thursday,
October 25th during the
morning. He will present 2 one
hour sessions that morning. All
Grade 3/4 classes and all
Grade 5/6 classes will be
involved.
To be prepared for his visit, each of the classes
involved will be reading one of his novels as a read
aloud, or as a joint read aloud with Mrs. Lee in the
library.
Kevin will also bring copies of MINRS and MINRS2
for students who would like an author signed
hardcover copy. More information to follow, but
please check out some of his titles below!
Grade 7/8 Library Volunteers
Grade 7/8 students are a huge support for our Mead-
ows Library.
An organizing “interest” meeting was held on Sept. 19
during morning recess. 4 or 5 students per day help
out in the library during morning recesses.

LUNCH INFORMATION
We are asking parents/guardians
to remove any nut products from
your child’s lunches and snacks. If
you send sandwiches with Wow
butter could you please mark the
sandwich, so we know it does not
contain peanut butter. We have students with serious
nut/peanut allergies. The best way to ensure a safe
environment for these students is for all parents to
be dutiful and carefully pack their children’s lunches
and snacks free of peanut products.
Here are some healthy alternatives that are nut
free:
Breadsticks, crackers, pita bread, muffins
Raw vegetables and dip
Yogurt, pudding
Chicken pieces, cold meats
Cheese and crackers
Please do not send items that require heating as stu-
dents do not have access to microwaves.
Students that go home for lunch should
not be returning until 12:40.
Your cooperation is appreciated!

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL
Wow, another school year already, where does the time go?
Welcome all students and families!
My name is Victoria Findlay, and I am Meadows Parent Advisory Council's chairperson. I have four children at
Meadows school, and have been on PAC for 8 years, serving as chairperson for the past two years.
We have a wonderful group of parents on PAC. But, many of us have children moving on to high school in the next
few years. We are in need of new members to join us and learn our policies, procedures, what we do as a commit-
tee and also have lots of fun helping within the school and community.
PAC is a great way to get involved with what's happening at Meadows school.
It's not a huge commitment, as we meet once a month September-June) Childcare is provided at all meetings, so
you can bring siblings, even if they don't go to Meadows.
As a PAC member, you will be involved in many aspects of your child/children's education. Last year, Meadows
PAC provided a parent run lunch program, did one annual fundraiser, purchased a new piano for the music room, a
new stove for the canteen, hosted movie nights, had a family BBQ, resurfaced the playground with new wood
chips, purchased another ping pong table and accessories, held a teacher appreciation luncheon, held booster
juice days, pizza days, and so much more. Without the commitment from PAC members, we could have never made
any of this happen! Please feel free to contact myself, if you have any questions.
Many hands make light work
Make sure to keep a look out for information about our upcoming fundraiser. ***We only do one fundraiser a
year and its a magazine fundraiser.*** We have had great results in the past, and are hoping for an even better
year, this year, with your support. Our kickoff assembly will be held on Sept 24th!
We will be holding our first meeting this Wednesday, Sept 19th at 7pm.
Please come and see what we are all about, we would love to have you! Hope to see you there!!!
Coming together is a beginning. Working together is success!
Sincerely,
Victoria Findlay

GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR
What does the Guidance Counsellor do?
I work for the students!
Teachers and the Guidance Counsellor work as a team with
the goal of promoting overall well-being and a sense of
belonging for all.
Guidance Counsellors provide leadership opportunities for
youth, including the facilitation of Youth Revolution.
Guidance Counsellors provide individual support to
students in need. Some students seek out counselling
support while others are referred by parents and teachers.
Guidance Counsellors work with students individually, in
small groups, or in classes.
Guidance Counsellors work with
EVERYONE, not just some students.
Students are welcome at any time!
Parents can contact Mrs. DeDecker at 1.204.729-3971
Wear ORANGE Sept. 27th
Because
EVERY CHILD MATTERS!
On Thursday September 27th, Meadows School will be
honoring Residential School Survivors by wearing orange and
paying tribute to Indigenous culture.
The color orange was inspired by Phyllis, whom in 1973 was
told she could not wear her new orange shirt at school and was
made to change into a plain shirt.
We wear orange for Phyllis and for all Residential School
Survivors because EVERY CHILD MATTERS!
EVERY CHILD MATTERS
Meadows School Home School Liaison facilitates the
attendance and call back program which is a way of
making sure that students who have left for school
have arrived safely. Parents of children who are ab-
sent without a reason will be contacted to verify the
reason for the absence. This is a way to ensure your
child's safety and attendance at school.
If your child is going to be absent or late, leaving ear-
ly, or picked up by someone other than their parents/
guardians, please ensure you notify our Home School
Liaison, Mrs. Lavoie at 204.729.3946.
As well, Mrs. Lavoie provides a vital link between the
home and school, and can support families in terms of
the communication of questions and concerns that re-
late to the school, family and community.
