Choosing to Heal moves one towards forgiveness: tell the story, name the hurt, grant forgiveness, then either renew or release the relationship. Now, this pathway is mostly about how we treat one another, but I want to consider laying this framework down over what God is doing in the Old Testament vs what God is doing through the person of Jesus Christ. When Gods people see God as the one who hands them over to the AmoritesI see this as a misinterpretation of what God is up to. At the August 2018 Theology on Tap session, we dis-cussed the power of forgiveness. The questions I laid out for the evening were based on the book called The Book of For-giving, by Demond Tutu and his daughter, Mpho Tutu. That conversation became an internal conversation for me as I read the Scriptures from the Daily Moravian Texts the follow-ing morning after the Theology on Tap session. Given that our community culture is very much based on “getting even” with one another or “holding power” over one another, I felt the topic was on point. And as my blog post got some traction, as did the Theology on Tap conversa-tion, I thought I’d share the post here, to help you see some thoughts on Forgiveness as we enter our fall season of life and ministry at Advent.

From my blog, “Digging Daily with Pastor Michael” (DiggingDaily.Wordpress.com, Tuesday, August 28, 2018)

S (Scripture): Joshua 10:6-16 (Go to BibleGateway.com, if you like)

O (Observation): Once again, a classic example of a lack of humility, followed by a challenging experience apart from God, followed by cries for mercy by God’s people (to God), and God showing mercy.

A (Application): The Book of Forgiving, by Desmond Tutu and daughter Mpho Tutu, includes a great image of two direc-tions one can choose after being a victim: choose to harm or to heal. Choosing to Harm is a cycle: one rejects the shared humanity one has, works towards revenge and violence…then the victim becomes the perpetrator. When God’s people see God as the one who “hands them over to the Amorites” I see this as a misinterpretation of what God is up to. In this case, God doesn’t hand anyone over…rather, God let’s God’s people call on their own gods. God is choosing to be open to healing and forgiveness…moving towards the Forgiveness Cycle. God’s people would rather see others as perpetrators and see themselves as victims…continuing down a Revenge Cycle. Eventually God would choose to fulfill his promise to humanity by becoming one of us…putting on flesh, becoming the Incarnate One who would constantly represent and em-body the Forgiveness Cycle.

P (Prayer): Lord, help us to choose the Forgiveness Cycle. Amen.

Peace, Pr. Michael Jannett

IN …discovering the path God has

chosen for each one of us…

First Confirmation Class & Parent Meeting!!!

Saturday, September 22, 9am, Fellowship Hall

One response to the gift of Baptism is to make inten-

tional efforts to teach our young folks about the joy of

our baptismal callings in life. One way we embrace

this joy is through education and formation in the minis-

try of Confirmation. At the end of two years of study,

our young folks step forward in faith through the rite of

Affirmation of Baptism. As they affirm their baptism,

they discern their path forward in this congregation and

in the community.

Faith formation is indeed a lifelong process, and one

part of this formation is Confirmation. Our 7th and 8

th

grade youth (and a few others) are continuing this pro-

cess this year on Saturday, September 22. 9am-

9:30am will be a parent meeting to discuss the pro-

gramming and calendar for the 2018-2019 Confirma-

tion year. Please plan to attend. We will then conduct

our first class together following the parent meeting,

9:30am-12:30pm.

To get a sneak peek at the calendar, please go the

Confirmation page on our website:

http://www.theadventchurch.com/confirmation.html

First Communion Class

Saturday, October 27

9-10:30am (children 9 and younger)

10:00-11:30am (children/youth older

than 9 years old)

Some of you have young ones that

come to the altar with you and they ask

about what’s going on…or why you go

up to the altar…or what it’s all about.

While we can’t fully answer all those

questions all at one time, we can start!

On Saturday, October 27, we will gather

to discuss the gift of Holy Communion

and prepare your children to receive this

blessed gift for the first time on Sunday,

October 28, Reformation Sunday.

Please sign up at this link here: https://

theadventchurch.breezechms.com/form/

This will allow us to keep an accurate

record of which children will be taking

Communion for the first time. We will

schedule younger children (through age

9) at the 9:00am-10:30am time slot.

Older children will come for the 10:00am

-11:30am time slot. The shared time

(10:00am-10:30am) will be our oppor-

tunity to show them how to kneel and

how to receive the elements. They will

also sample the bread and juice / wine at

this time.

Please be sure to register at the link above.

Gratitude Sunday (Top Left) where the youth shared their experiences from camp and the youth gathering. Rally Day Picnic (Bottom Left) Fam-ilies gathered at Barfield park to have a picnic and games to celebrate the kick off of Sun-day School

We, (myself, husband Bill and daughter Molly) just moved here from Trinity, Florida in June. We are life-long Luther-ans, I grew up in Iowa and Bill in Minnesota.

Before moving to Tennessee, we lived in Florida for 17 years, and I worked as Secretary & Office

Administrator for Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church ELCA for 8 years. My husband Bill works for Bridgestone/Firestone and Molly graduated from High School this year and has just started her first year at MTSU.

We were so excited to find an ELCA church near our new home. We look forward to meet-ing everyone and making Advent Lutheran our new church home and family!

Special Needs Ministry Team to Meet on Sunday, September 23

After 10:45 Worship Last year, a team of people met at Advent to explore the potential for ministry to children and adults with disabilities. The discussion generat-ed a number of excellent ideas which the Spe-cial Ministries Team will revisit on Sunday, Sep-tember 23 immediately following worship in the fellowship hall. Child care and refreshments will be provided. All are welcome!

Pastor Jannett and Deacon Intern Lori Ward will lead the meeting, which will not last more than one hour. Lori has been endorsed by the South-eastern Synod-ELCA to specialize in community outreach and service, including ministry with and among people with disabilities. After the meet-ing on September 23, Lori will work intensely on projects already suggested by the Special Ministries Team, such as offering respite care to support families sometime before Christmas and establishing a monthly worship service which is inclusive and welcoming (shush free!) to people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. With guidance from the team, her work will include research, confirming logistics, and broad communication.

Talk to Lori or Pastor Jannett on Sunday for more information or contact her at [email protected] or 615-519-1969 (cell phone).

Rally Day Picnic at Barfield Park, lots of families came for food, fun and fellowship!
