Dr.C.Balachandran, Vice–Chancellor, TANUVAS unfurled the National Flag at the University Headquarters, distributed Kissan Vikas Patras for the employees who have rendered 25 years of unblemished service and addressed the gathering. The staff and students of the University participated. The Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS also planted hybrid coconut tree saplings at Livestock Farm Complex, Madhavaram. Earlier the Vice- Chancellor, TANUVAS unfurled the National Flag at Madras Veterinary College campus and addressed the gathering. The Deans of VC&RIs at Namakkal, Tirunelveli and Orathanadu, CFDT, Koduvalli and CPPM, Hosur unfurled the National Flag at their respective campuses. The NCC Cadets at MVC and VC&RI, Namakkal presented a ceremonial parade during the occasion. Velumani, Hon’ble Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme, Government of Tamil Nadu participated as the Chief Guest, inaugurated the programme and delivered the inaugural address.     expertize. TANUVAS technologies and products, live exhibits and publications were displayed in the TANUVAS stalls. The faculty members of

    TANUVAS delivered lectures on livestock and poultry health and management aspects during the technical sessions. Five best farmers and five best entrepreneurs nominated by TANUVAS were honoured. More than 6,500 farmers attended the mela and were benefitted.

    NEW HATCHErY UNIT INAUGUrATED

    A new hatchery unit with double setter facilities of 30,240 eggs and hatchery facilities of 10,080 eggs for incubation has been commissioned at Poultry Research Station, Madhavaram at a total cost of Rs. 9.00 lakhs. Dr. C. Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS inaugurated the facility by lighting the Kuthu Vizhakku and distributed inputs viz. native chicken and feed to the beneficiaries who have undergone skill development and self-employment training course to start an economic activity on 01.08.2018. Dr. M. Thirunavukkarasu, Registrar, TANUVAS, Dr. V. Ramesh Saravana Kumar, Director, CAPS, TANUVAS, other University Officers and HODs were present.

    EXOTIC PET bIrD UNIT INAUGUrATED

    Dr.C.Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS inaugurated an exotic pet bird unit at the Postgraduate Research Institute in Animal Sciences, Kattupakkam on 16.08.2018 in the presence of Dr.V.Ramesh Saravana Kumar, DCAPS, TANUVAS. Currently the unit has 10 pairs of Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and Java sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora). In future other exotic varieties like cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), cockatoos (Cacatua sulphurea), American gold finch (Spinus tristis) and Rosy faced love birds (Agapornis roseicollis) will be added.

    brAINSTOrMING ON NEWCASTlE DISEASE

    TANUVAS and National Academy of Veterinary Sciences (India) jointly organized a brainstorming session on “Newcastle disease in poultry” at VC&RI, Namakkal on 03.08.2018. Dr. G.A. Balasubramaniam, Dean i/c, VC&RI, Namakkal welcomed the gathering. The event

    session comprised five sessions viz., “Indian scenario of global pathogen- Newcastle disease virus” by Dr. K. Kumanan, Dean i/c, MVC, “Vaccines and vaccination issues” by Dr. J. John Kirubaharan, Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary Microbiology, MVC, “Newcastle disease - Diagnostic approaches” by Dr. K. Vijayarani, Professor and Head, Department of Animal Biotechnology, MVC, “Scenario of Newcastle disease in Namakkal” by Dr. T.R. Gopala Krishna Murthy, Professor and Head, PDDSL and “Newcastle disease field issues and emerging threats” by Dr. K. Sukumar, Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary Microbiology, VC&RI, Namakkal and the recommendations were recorded.

    ICAr SPONSOrED SHOrT COUrSE

    The Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, MVC, Chennai conducted an ICAR Sponsored 10 days Short Course on “Novel approaches in disease diagnosis via imaging modalities in veterinary clinical practice” from 01.08.2018 to 10.08.2018. Faculties from various SAUs had participated in this programme. Dr. K. Kumanan, Dean, i/c, MVC and Dr.S.Balasubramanian, Director of Clinics, TANUVAS inaugurated the training on 01.08.2018.

    TrAINING ON INTEGArTED CrOP – lIVESTOCK SYSTEM

    IAN, Kattupakkam, CAPS, TANUVAS organized a one-day farmers training entitled “Integrated Crop – Livestock System” under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Scheme on 16.08.2018. A total of 92 farmers from Kancheepuram and Villupuram Districts participated. Dr. V. Ramesh Saravana Kumar, Director, CAPS inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp and also demonstrated the utilization of cattle urine as micronutrient

    source for trees. In addition to technical sessions various TANUVAS technologies were showcased. Dr. C. Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS participated in the valedictory function, delivered the presidential address, released the training manual and pamphlets and distributed certificates and inputs to the participants.

    TrAINING

    VUTRC, Karur conducted a farm school on “Desi fowl rearing” for 25 farmers including 15 farm women at Karuppur village in Thanthoni block of Karur district. The programme was inaugurated on 19.07.2018. A total of six classes were conducted during July and August, 2018 and the farm school completed on 30.08.2018. Tmt. K.B.Jeyanthi, JD (Agri.) Karur issued certificates on 19.07.2018 in the presence of Mrs. R. Umarani, Deputy Director, FTC, Karur.

    The centre also conducted a self-employment training programme on “Goat Farming” for ten days from 20.08.2018 to 31.08.2018 funded by Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI) of Indian Overseas Bank, Karur. Thiru. M.Parameshkumar, AGM, NABARD and Thiru G.Ranganatha Prabhu, Director- RSETI participated in the inaugural function held on 20.08.2018. A total of 23 farmers including rural youth and women participated.

    The Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics and the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, VC&RI, Tirunelveli have jointly conducted a training programme on “Ethno-veterinary practices in livestock and poultry” under the project on “Ethno-Veterinary Herbal Products Research and Development Centre”

    of Tamil Nadu State Innovation Initiative (TANII) programme at Chokkattanthoppu village on 16.08.2018. Dr.J.Johnson Rajeswar, Dean i/c, VC&RI, Tirunelveli presided over the Valedictory function and distributed the certificates to the participants. A total of 36 women Self Help Group members participated in the programme.

    FArMErS OrIENTATION PrOGrAMME

    VUTRC, Tiruchirapalli organized Farmers Orientation Programme on “Scientific management of bovine breeding through technological backstopping” at Pannankombu, Manaparai on 23.08.2018. Lectures on the reasons and economic importance of infertility and recent technologies in oestrous synchronization were arranged. Dr. S. Murugesan, JD(AH), Tiruchirapalli Dr. Suresh Christopher, AD(AH), Srirangam and Dr. P. Thuraiarasan, AGM, Aavin participated and spoke. The AMMA Ambulance was stationed and the activities were explained. A total of 263 farmers from three self-help group members attended and benefitted.

    WOrKSHOP ON SHEEP MANAGEMENT

    VUTRC, Krishnagiri organized a one-day workshop on “Sheep management” under NABARD funded scheme on “Technological Interventions to improve productivity in sheep” on 24.08.2018. Lectures on various aspects of sheep management were arranged. Tmt. Nasreen Salim, GM, NABARD, Krishnagiri and Dr. C. Elangovan, RJD(AH), Krishnagiri participated and spoke. Inputs were distributed and their usage was explained. A total of 50 farmers were benefitted.

    SKIll DEVElOPMENT COUrSE

    VUTRC, Karur conducted a skill development course on “Poultry Vaccinator” from 18.06.2018 to 21.07.2018 in which a total of eight candidates from Karur District participated. Dr.N.K.Sudeep Kumar, Director of Extension Education and DDE i/c, TANUVAS issued the certificates to the successful trainees on 06.08.2018.

    EXPOSUrE VISIT ON GOAT rEArING TECHNOlOGIES

    VUTRC, Karur conducted an exposure visit sponsored by ATMA, Karur on the theme ‘Goat rearing technologies’ on 24.08.2018 and 25.08.2018 in which a total of 50 farmers from Krishnarayapuram block of Karur district participated. The participants were taken to Kisan Samriddhi Mela - 2018 held at Coddissia Trade Fair Complex, Coimbatore and exposed to recent farming technologies.

    INTErNATIONAl TIGEr DAY 2018

    Wildlife club of the Department of Wildlife Science, MVC celebrated the International Tiger Day on 02.08.2018. Dr. K. Kumanan, Dean i/c, MVC offered the felicitation address. Dr. T. Sivakumar, President of Wildlife Club and the Dean i/c, FBS, TANUVAS, offered the presidential address. Dr.C.Sreekumar, Vice-president of Wildlife Club

    and Professor and Head of Department of Wildlife Science, MVC, Chennai Presented the annual report of the Wildlife club of MVC. Dr. N. Kalaivanan, Former Wildlife Veterinarian, Muthumalai Tiger Reserve, Mudumalai delivered special address.

    ANTI rAbIES VACCINATION CAMP

    VC&RI, Orathanadu, Department of Animal Husbandry, Thanjavur and Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Thanjavur jointly organized an Anti-rabies awareness cum vaccination camp for pet animals at Veterinary Hospital, Kumbakonam on 29.08.2018. A total of 162 dogs and 5 cats were vaccinated against rabies.

    AWArENESS PrOGrAMME

    VC&RI, Orathanadu and TNLDA jointly organised an awareness programme on “Pulikulam cattle” as a part of the scheme, “Field performance recording programme in Pulikulam cattle” funded by TNLDA at Thirupathur, Sivagangai District on 28.08.2018. A calf rally was conducted and the best Pulikulam cows and calves were selected and prizes were distributed to the owners. A total of 92 beneficiaries of the scheme participated.

    NEW UNIVErSITY OFFICErS jOINED TANUVAS

    Dr. S. balasubramanian assumed charge as Director of Clinics, TANUVAS on 27.08.2018. He has completed post-doctoral training in University of Guelph and University of Western Ontario, Canada (1997-1998) and distinguished Research Scientist Fellowship in Gyeongsang National University, South Korea (2005-2007). He joined TANUVAS in 1989 and served in various capacities.

    He has guided one Ph.D. and 7 M.V.Sc. students. He has to his credit 155 clinical and research publications and 71 popular articles and pamphlets. He has won 36 awards which include the International Young Scientist Award – 1998. He has developed 6 innovations / technologies. He also received Dr. N.C. Sharma Memorial Award – 2012 in recognition of the Meritorious Contribution to Research in Animal Reproduction by the Indian Society for the Study of Animal Reproduction.

    Dr. G. Dhinakar raj assumed charges as Director, Centre for Animal Health Studies, TANUVAS on 27.08.2018. He joined TANUVAS in 1990 and he has commercialized 18 products from TANUVAS and TRPVB. He has filed 11 patents of which one has been awarded and 7 have been published. He has fostered research collaborations with 13 national institutions or companies and four international institutions. He published 238 research articles, authored 5 books and 3 chapters. He has guided 5 Ph.D, 9 M. V. Sc and 5 M. Phil students. He is a member of the RCGM, a statutory body of Government of India, DBT Task Force and in the RAC/SAC in 3 ICAR / DBT institutions. He was awarded the Commonwealth Fellowship for his doctoral programme. He was the recipient of the TANSA award in 1994, the National Bio-sciences award in 2007 and the DBT-TATA fellowship in 2012.

    Dr. j. john Kirubaharan assumed cahrges as Dean, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai on 27.08.2018. He joined the university in 1989 and he significantly contributed for obtaining ISO 9001-2000 certificate for Madras Veterinary College, development of biofilm vaccine against sheep pasteurellosis, ELISA based

    diagnostic kits for quantification of antibodies against Newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis and development and standardization of inactivated black quarter vaccine for cattle. He also developed and transferred technologies viz., oral pellet vaccine to control Newcastle disease among desi chicken, thermostabilized live Newcastle disease vaccine, improved black quarter vaccine. He has published 80 research articles. Received Best teacher award of the University twice in the years 2001 and 2011. He was the recipient of Gold medal for best doctorate thesis in veterinary microbiology and received the Mid-career Scientist award of the Indian Society for Veterinary Immunology and Biotechnology for the year 2004.

    Dr. P. Kumarasamy assumed charges as Controller of Examinations, TANUVAS on 27.08.2018. He joined TANUVAS in 1993. He was instrumental in the establishment of andrological laboratory for screening of breeding bulls of Tamil Nadu, Regional Core Laboratory for molecular characterization of South Indian Breeds of Livestock and Biotech Centre for Fecundity Genes for increasing twinning in sheep by Fec B gene introgression. He has published 78 research articles, 104 scientific abstracts, 28 popular articles and authored 20 books / manuals / compendium. Instrumental in signing two MOA/MOU between Genome Life Sciences, Xinnovem and TANUVAS for the collaborative research on Genomics. Guided 141 student projects in the field of Animal Genetics, Animal Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.

    Dr. b. Mohan assumed charge as Dean, VC&rI, Namakkal on 27.08.2018. He joined TANUVAS in 1993. He was instrumental in the establishment of Animal Feed Analytical and Quality Assurance Laboratory (AFAQAL) and Regional Feed Processing Unit under NADP

    scheme at VC&RI, Orathanadu. He has published 63 research articles, 40 research notes, 3 books, 36 chapters in books, 47 popular articles. He has guided 4 M.V.Sc. students. His Ph.D. research work was awarded with three Gold Medals by TANUVAS. He was awarded as the best extension worker of TANUVAS during 2011. He was recognized with 24 awards and appreciations by District Administration, TANUVAS and ICAR, New Delhi.

    Dr. G. Sarathchandra assumed charges as Dean, Faculty of basic Sciences, TANUVAS on 27.08.2018. He has 24 years of experience. He accomplished establishment of Pharmacovigilance Laboratory for Animal Feed and Food Safety, Pharmacotoxicological Diagnosis in Disease Outbreaks, Veterinary Pharmacovigilance for recording adverse drug reaction in livestock and was certified as NABL Assessor for 17025 Laboratory Accreditation and for establishment of Veterinary Forensic Sciences Laboratory. He published 65 research articles and 5 manuals. Received TANSA award in the field of Veterinary Sciences for the year 2007 and Dr.Vaithilingam Rathnasabhapathy award 2012 for his innovation in the field of veterinary sciences.

    Dr. K.N. Selvakumar took charge as Director of Distance Education, TANUVAS on 27.08.2018. He joined the University in 1988 and he was instrumental in the establishment of econometrics laboratory at MVC. He serves as member of Under-Graduate Admission committee of TANUVAS for the past 25 years. He has to his credit 16 externally funded projects, 99 research articles and guided 9 M.V.Sc., and 4 Ph.D. students. He developed District Agricultural Plan (DAP) for 11th and 12th plans of Tamil Nadu to aid in the implementation of NADP. He has offered consultancy to develop ‘Technology Achievement

    Index’ for Indian Livestock sector. He is serving as a Member in Technical Management Committee for the Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of Tamil Nadu, Nodal Officer for UGC-All India Survey on Higher Education and as a Consultant for livestock sector - State Planning Commission, Government of Tamil Nadu.

    Dr. T. Sivakumar assumed charges as Dean, VC&rI, Orathanadu on 27.08.2018. He joined the university in 1989 and he was instrumental in establishing the Ostrich and Boer Goat Research Units at Livestock Research Station, Kattupakkam. He has published 230 research articles, 25 international and 104 national abstracts, 56 popular articles and 25 text books / practical manuals. Guided 7 M.V.Sc. and 10 Ph.D., scholars. Received TANSA award in the year 2010 in the field of Veterinary Science and A.L. Mudaliar Award for the overall best performance in M.V.Sc. for the year 1988, Tamil Peravai Award for the best book published in Tamil in the year 1999, Shantha Memorial Award for the best book published for the year 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

    Dr.P.Tensingh Gnanaraj assumed charges as registrar, TANUVAS on 27.08.2018. He has 22 years of experience and published 116 research articles, 182 popular articles, 84 short communications, 11 books and 13 book chapters. He has organized 19 workshop / seminars / trainings and 22 farmers training programmes and applied for six patents. He is bestowed with 9 awards including Best Farm Scientist Award - 2012 and Senior Scientists Award 2016 in the Discipline of Veterinary Science. He has guided one Ph.D. and 7 M.V.Sc. Students. He has handled 42 research projects. He has contributed significantly in the area of livestock production and management with special reference to fabrication of innovative farm devices / equipments, pig and goat farming.

    VICE-CHANCEllOr INAUGUrATES ICAr SHOrT COUrSE AT NIANP, bENGAlUrU

    The National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology (NIANP), Bengaluru has organized an ICAR-sponsored Short Course on “Recent Advances in Nutritional Physiological Approaches for improving Reproduction and Production in Livestock under Climate Change Scenario” from 20.08.2018 to 29.08.2018. The inaugural function was held on 20.08.2018. Dr. C. Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS participated as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the short course and addressed the participants.

    VICE-CHANCEllOr’S VISIT TO CPPM, HOSUr

    Dr. C. Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS visited the administrative complex, library, academic block, technology block, engineering block, hostel complex, feed mill and poultry farm complex of CPPM, Hosur on 02.08.2018 and also interacted with the staff and students.

    VICE-CHANCEllOr’S PArTICIPATION IN IAUA 7TH rEGIONAl COMMITTEE MEETING

    Dr.C.Balachandran,Vice-Chancel lor, TANUVAS participated in the IAUA 7th Regional Committee Meeting of Vice-Chancellors organized at CS Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur on 29.08.2018 and 30.08.2018 to share the views and experience on the issues related to “Harnessing potential of traditional and modern technologies for sustainable agriculture”. The Vice-Chancellor presented a paper on “Potential of traditional and modern knowledge in integration of animal agriculture in India” during the occasion.

    NSS ACTIVITIES

    An awareness programme on “Avoid Plastics –Save Nature” was conducted by NSS unit and Sanitary Services Section of MVC on 16.08.2018 at MVC Campus as part of creating awareness on plastic usage among public. A poster competition on the theme “Avoid Plastics-Save Nature” among the students was also part of this awareness programme. Dr. K. Kumanan, Dean i/c, MVC inaugurated the programme. A total of 80 NSS volunteers participated.

    A guest lecture on “Role of veterinarians in pharmaceutical industry” was oganised by the NSS unit of MVC for the benefit of pre-final year students in association with Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, MVC, Chennai on 09.08.2018. Dr. M.S Ram Prasad, Manager- Technical and Marketing, Virbac Private Ltd Company delivered the lecture and a total of 40 students participated in the programme.
