Sept. 30 meeting to discuss finances The congregation council, at its Aug. 21 meeting, called a congregational meeting for Sunday, Sept. 30, for the stated purpose of discussing income and expenses for the current year and possible ramifications for the budget year 2019. The meeting will begin at 9:45 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall and will last 45 minutes. Watch the bulletin board for financial information posted in the coming weeks. The agenda will be a brief overview of our financial situation, with time for questions. Members may submit questions in advance, anonymously if they wish. By Rev. Jeff Zell September 12 at 10 a.m. at Gloria Dei we begin anew our combined adult Bible study with First English. We continue our study of the Small Catechism using the by heart: Conversations with Martin Luthers Small Catechism. In the following Wednesdays our attention will be drawn to the sacraments of Baptism and the Lords Supper, the Office of the Keys and Confession, daily prayer and the Household Chart. I look forward to all of these subjects. We start with baptism because baptism is our entrance into the church. Regardless of whether we are baptized as infants, children, or adults, we mark the day of our baptism as the day we became a Christian. In baptism we receive Christs promise of salvation, forgiveness, continuous presence of the Holy Spirit, and eternal life with God. We baptize because Jesus tells us to. Matthew 28:18-20 is the command of Jesus to the disciples to go to the ends of the earth and baptize. Baptism is not simply dousing someone with water. The person baptizing always invokes the full name of God as water is applied to the person. Jesus says, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. So, the person baptizing repeats what Jesus says and baptizes in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Lutherans take their baptismal theology from the New Testament. Following Martin Luthers lead, we preach and teach what the Holy Spirit lays out for us in Holy Scripture. What follows are some of the New Testament references to baptism and baptismal theology. This will make for some interesting study on Wednesdays but also interesting scriptures to ponder during your devotions. Matthew 3:11-12; 28:18-20; Mark 10:39; Luke 12:50; John 3:22-26; Acts 2:41; 8:12-13, 36-37; 9:18; 10:47-48; 16:15, 33; 18:8; 19:5; Aldo, Romans 6:3-5; 8:9-11; 13:13-14; 1 Corinthians 1:13-16; 3:23; 6:19; 2 Corinthians 4:5-14; 5:17; 13:2-5 Bible scholarsresume inquiry into Small Catechism Our congregations are joining forces this month to participate in the Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter Habitat for Humanity project as the first step in what we hope will become an ongoing involvement with the local chapter of this humanitarian project, and there is an opportunity for members to experience the joy and reward first hand. Bible ‘scholars’ resume inquiry into Small Catechism

Our congregations are joining forces this month to participate in the Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter Habitat for Humanity project as the first step in what we hope will become an ongoing involvement with the local chapter of this humanitarian project, and there is an opportunity for members to experience the joy and reward first hand. Grace, Redeemer merging in October

Two Lutheran congregations in Elkhart became one last month. In mid-August, the people of Grace voted to merge with Lutheran Church of The Redeemer. Grace will be the continuing congregation, and Lutheran Church of The Redeemer will end English worship on Oct. 6. They will have a Holy Closure Worship on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 11:00 a.m., with Bishop Gafkjen preaching and presiding.

The Fall Cluster meeting of the

Women of the ELCA will be Sept. 29 at

Grace Lutheran Church on Marion St.

in Elkhart.

This will be Grace’s first time to

host the meeting along with Augustana

Lutheran Church. Sixteen churches are

in our cluster.

Registration and coffee will be from

8:30-9 a.m., followed by a few words

from Cindy Sawyer from CAPS (Child

and Parent Services) who will receive

the physical offering of baby items as

well as our money donations.

The vice-president of the synod-wide

women’s organization plans to attend

and give us the history of WELCA.

Our Bible study is “Let Us Pray”,

taken from the Gather magazine. The

sewing blitz comforters made the

previous week will be on display as well

as a sample to experience the process.

Register with Roni Hobkirk,

[email protected], 574-904-1617. The cost

is $7 paid at the door. “ We will have a

wonderful time and good fellowship with

Lutheran women from our area

churches,” said Roni.

Extending Christian sympathies, other noteworthy items

Longtime member Paul Scherer died

following an extended illness early

Sunday morning Aug. 26 as final touches

were being applied to the September

issue of NewsNotes.

Funeral arrangements were

incomplete at press time, and a full

remembrance of Dr. Scherer will appear

in the October issue.

We extend our Christian sympathy to

the Scherer family and also to Jeanette

Taylor on the recent death of her aunt,

Rose Niehaus.

Rev. Daniel Rift, director of ELCA

World Hunger and Disaster Appeal, sent

thanks for the donations on May 24 for

$200 toward God’s Global Barnyard and

for $1,105 sent on May 30 for ELCA

World Hunger.

We also received a thank-you letter

from Pastor Nancy Nyland, director of

Evangelical Mission for Indiana-

Kentucky Synod, for our financial

contribution of $3,500 through July 31

toward the Synod’s Mission Support.

The letters are on the bulletin board in

the Fellowship Hall.

Even though summer is still exerting

its strength, the members of Mary Circle

are making plans for the fall and winter

slate of programs and activities.

The circle will gather at church at

6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4 for an

organizational meeting. Please let the

office know you will attend.

Our Fifth Sunday project (Sept. 30) is our annual collection of clothing, personal care items, sporting goods and toys and games for the Wernle Home in Richmond. Look for a complete list of needed and appreciated items by the Fifth Sunday cross.

our shut-ins.

Those who have asked

for our prayers

include ….

perhaps bring knee pads for

comfortable kneeling. You may bring

a lunch, or the group may send for

carry-in.

Outdoor work is expected to

continue through October and

November, and the houses will be

ready for occupancy by early

December, so there is a good chance

that our group will return for more

work.

The joint social ministry committee

at first thought the project could be the

God’s Work/Our Hands project, but

the early September dates were

reserved for the major construction.

We are asked to create individual

volunteer accounts through a

dedicated link on the Habitat Web site.

Please contact the church office (288-

5266) immediately, and you will be

provided with registration information.

All members are welcome to join the

Sunday School class in assembling

personal care kits for Lutheran World

Relief, donations are most welcome to

help meet the goal of 150 kits

assembled, bundled up and forwarded to

LWR.

Personal Care Kits are shared with

people who have lost everything from a

natural disaster or life-threatening

violence.

The slogan is, “Give hope through a

bar of soap.”

Each kit will contain the following

new and unused items, which members

are asked to bring to church for the next

several weeks:

One lightweight bath towel in any

dark color (20x40 inches or no larger

than 52x27); two 8- to 9-oz. bars of bath

soap in original wrapping; three adult

size tooth brushes in original packaging;

one large sturdy comb with handle, and

one large metal nail clippers (toenail

clippers would be best).

The kits will be assembled beginning

at 9:45 a.m. Sept. 23, and there will be a

task for everyone.

Donations, assemblers needed for LWR personal care kits

On Sunday, Sept. 9, we are asking you to do God’s Work by calling, sending a card or stop-ping by for a brief visit with one of our shut-ins, or maybe someone you have not seen or talked with for a while. A list of members who would appreciate a warm hello will be available, and all we ask is that you return the card anonymously

letting us know whom you called, visited or to whom you sent greetings.
