Acting President’s Report

Dear Members,

I hope you have been enjoying our beautiful end-of-winter sunny

weather that just keeps on saying, “Come outside and enjoy

living!”

U3A members once again showed amazing teamwork at this

year’s I Age Well Expo held on Wednesday, August 21st during

Seniors Week at Venue 114.

Two of our ukulele groups contributed to the morning’s wonderful

entertainment in the outdoor courtyard. Tutors Richard Marman

and Lorraine Quinn encouraged their players to shine, with popular

tunes, backed by good vocals, sparkling with fun.

The photos of Pamela Woodrow’s tap dancers clearly show their

star quality and synchronized discipline, even though they were

unable to dance on the courtyard’s concrete surface. Next time,

we’ll commandeer the wooden stage floor!

With about 60 stallholders on the day, U3A was fortunate to be

given a prime corner stall to promote our organisation to interested

visitors – and our smiling volunteers were busy all day, chatting to

people, telling them about the U3A Sunshine Coast, and

encouraging them to join.

Thanks go to Management Committee members Margaret

Thomson, Terry Kirkland, John St. Smith and Wayne Curran for

helping to set up and staff our stall during the day.

Thank you too to volunteers Mark Stanton, Sue Graham, Bev

Schouten, Lorraine Quinn, Rosemary Solomons, Louise Taylor-Smith

(who also modeled in the parade), and Karen Macleod.

And thanks go to our own Administrative Officer Jo Evans, who

recovered from her cold to come along for the afternoon shift.

A great variety of workshops were on offer: Dr. Sanjay

Gangadharan’s presentation “Understanding Dementia: Is there

hope?” was a popular early morning choice, and some of our U3A

members stepped up to pose with him for the photo.

The day finished with a fashion parade, arranged and compered

by Jan Wild, with half a dozen joyous models, including two U3A

members, showing the audience a wide range of garments

sponsored by local fashion houses.

Now the I Age Well Expo has passed, it’s time to note the next significant event on our U3A calendar: our very

first “Master Lectures” day on Saturday October 26th. This will be held at the university, with two key

lecturers delivering fascinating presentations, the first on the role of U3A’s in maintaining our physical, mental

and emotional health, the second on a really interesting new venture into “Intergenerational Living” in

Gympie.

After the lectures, we will provide a delicious morning tea, and volunteers are invited to come along and help

us set up.

At their last Management Committee meeting on August 16th, the members passed a new policy entitled

“Social Media” which refers specifically to editors’ entries on Facebook. This has now been added to our

webpage, with a front page “Read More” link to the Policy.

Another exciting new initiative is the passing of our first Bylaw on Life Membership, with “the aim to recognise

a person or persons who have made an outstanding contribution to the ongoing success of our organisation

no matter what position they have held or hold.”

Both the Bylaw and the Life Membership Nomination Forms will be available on the U3A Sunshine Coast website

- and you will be able to obtain a hard copy of the nomination form from the U3A office.

The Management Committee will also be continuing the planning for the Strategic Plan mid-term Review when

our President returns from his three months overseas travel in October. Colin and Gaynor are currently exploring

North West Italy from their Airbnb base and enjoying a wonderful family holiday.

I hope you will carry on “Enjoying your Learning!”

Sincerely,

Glyni Cumming Acting President

New Courses!

Excel Spreadsheets

A course starting in Term 4 for people who want to understand how

to effectively use spreadsheets or need a refresher to update or

build on their current knowledge of Excel. This is a hands-on and

practical class with opportunities to work on a number of exercises.

Some of the topics include Excel terminology, common uses, basic

calculations, list manipulation, data types and formats, differences

between a calculation, a formula and a function etc.

Bob Lawrence has been using Excel for over 20 years, both in a

work and home environment. During this time, he has seen Excel

evolve considerably up to today’s Version 2016. The new features

and changes to Excel during this time have been very substantial.

When working, he used Excel on the job, primarily in administrative

applications. Since retiring, he has presented a number of classes

in Excel covering theory and using practical hands-on exercises

(the only way to learn Excel), to give people a thorough understanding of the uses of spreadsheets. Please see

more details of this class please go to the U3A website (Course Code 19COM412) or ring the U3A Office on 5430

1123.
