The Messenger King of Glory Lutheran Church 1 The Messenger - September 2019 Welcome The Reverend Debra M. Abbott Dear King of Glory Lutheran Church, The installation of Pr Deb Abbott will take place on Saturday, September 7, at 2:00pm! After worship we will have a reception with light refreshments for her in the Fellowship Room. This is a Kairos moment – a God moment in time – for our life as a congregation. After a year-long discernment and search, we are humbled and excited that God has called Pr Abbott to join God’s ministry in our congregation. We give God thanks! Please mark your calendars and make every effort to attend. Bishop Jim Gonia will be presiding over the installation. From the Pastor ELCA News Bishop Jim Gonia, Bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod has returned from his three month sabbatical. Read his blog about the Churchwide Assembly at bishopgonia.blogspot.com. We will welcome Bp Jim for Pr Deb Abbott’s installation on September 7. At the 2019 Churchwide Assembly in Milwaukee, bishops, clergy and lay people met and worshipped under the theme “We Are Church.” You may have seen in the news recently the ELCA passed a ‘memorial’ declaring itself to be a sanctuary church body. A memorial addresses broad issues or programs in the Churchwide organization. For example, a Synod could ‘memorialize’ the Churchwide Assembly to remember and take steps to address Veterans health and well-being. Becoming a sanctuary church body does not mean that every congregation will now house refugees or immigrants. Each congregation is able to choose from a large variety of options depending on their context. • In its simplest form, becoming a sanctuary denomination means that the ELCA is publicly declaring that walking alongside immigrants and refugees is a matter of faith. When we preach on Sunday that Jesus told us to welcome, we will use our hands and voices on Monday to make sure it happens. Welcoming people is not a political issue for us, it is a matter of faith. • Sanctuary for a congregation may mean hosting English as a second Language (ESL) classes, marching as people of faith against the detention of children and families, providing housing for a community member facing deportation, or, in some of our congregations, having thoughtful conversations about what our faith says about immigration. All of these are a step closer to sanctuary in our faith communities and sanctuary in our world for people who must leave their homes. • Except for our members whose ancestors were here before European settlement or others who were forced to come to the U.S. against their will, the ELCA is an immigrant church. Our decades-long work with immigrants and refugee is how we practice our faith in the world. Lutherans started Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, one of the nine refugee resettlement agencies in the U.S. King of Glory is already a sanctuary congregation because Pr Carlos led adults in a class on immigration – what it is Biblically, politically and from a faith perspective. If you have any questions or wish to speak with me about this issue, my door is open to you! Let’s Live Out Our Welcome! This fall please wear your name tags. We have new members joining us which includes Pr Deb. She will be learning all our names; while we only have to remember hers! It is name tag time! Welcome The Reverend Debra M. Abbott Dear King of Glory Lutheran Church,

The installation of Pr Deb Abbott will take place on Saturday, September 7, at 2:00pm! After worship we will have a reception with light refreshments for her in the Fellowship Room. This is a Kairos moment – a God moment in time – for our life

as a congregation. After a year-long discernment and search, we are humbled and excited that God has called Pr Abbott to join God’s ministry in our congregation. We give God thanks! KOG Music Happenings

Glory Singers and Glory Ringers will resume rehearsals on Wednesday, August 28, in

preparation for Rally Sunday, September 15. Times will be the same as last year: Bells at 6:00PM and Choir at 7:00PM.

Everyone in the congregation is invited to participate! I know many of you are good singers as I sit in the congregation. We would love to add bell players so that we can get to three octaves of bells. In both groups, we have a core of wonderful musicians, but we certainly would love to have more! Worship, Grow, Serve Sounds great, doesn’t it? That’s what we do at King of Glory. Over the next two months, you’ll hear much more about who we are, what we want to accomplish, and how we get there. Keep a watchful eye and ear for the information coming from our Generosity Team as together we ‘think generous!” Caring Eucharistic Ministers We have a many home-centered members who are not able to attend worship at KOG. We had two Caring Visitors who took Holy Communion faithfully the last several years. This team has now expanded and changed its name to Caring Eucharistic Ministers. They are excited to serve the Lord and our members in this way. We will bless them and send them from worship on the first Sunday of each month. If you know of a member who might enjoy receiving Holy Communion at home please let Pastor Ruth Ann know.

Marty MouseMarty MouseMarty MouseMarty Mouse

Marty has had a busy summer trying to stay cool in this heat! Luckily there are many shady places to nap around King of Glory. He was so excited on August 10th when he saw another pastor up on the altar! Marty listened carefully. Apparently her name is Pastor Deb. So keeping his nose to the floor, he soon discovered there were other changes too! The former conference room in the office was getting the carpet cleaned and there was a fresh coat of paint on the walls. He thought to himself, “I don’t like that smell!” But it looked lovely. One day the door went away and soon it came back with a new window in it! Several people worked very hard to get this new office ready. Marty is eager to get to know Pr Deb. Because he comes from a long line of pastors, he knows the importance of a good shepherd for God’s people. He’ll be listening! Won’t you?
