From Our CEO

The year is quickly gaining momentum and we are busy planning for the future. During the cold wet winter, Ben has managed to demolish three properties in the Scholz Ave precinct as part of our long term rejuvenation project. Over time we will continue to renovate, refurbish and rejuvenate our properties to ensure we provide quality housing for everybody.

Leanne and her finance team have been assisting our auditors in preparing our year end general purpose financial reports. The finance team do an exceptional job every day and because of this, there are never any financial adjustments done at the end of the year. This

is an important exercise as once the audited, financial accounts can be signed off by the Board, we can then hold our annual general meetings.

The Barossa Village resident Association (BVRA) are holding their AGM on the 14th of October at 1.30pm in the Joy

Rice Centre. I hope all of our ILU residents can make it. The Barossa Village AGM is being held at the Joy Rice Centre on October the 27th at 7.00pm. All members are welcome.

Matt and his team at the Residency are working tirelessly in managing the continually changing COVID directions and legislative requirements.

Staff at the residency who are providing direct care to our residents are now wearing masks on a daily basis to ensure we reduce the risk of COVID infections for our residents. Our staff continue to do their best during these difficult times. At this stage, we are in a very fortunate situation with no community infections in South Australia. The tough border controls are working in keeping COVID out of our communities. This still remains

a day to day proposition and hopefully when Victoria can get back under control, we might be able to breathe a little easier.

I encourage you all to remain vigilant. If you are experiencing any flu like symptoms, please get tested and self-isolate until your results come back. Social distancing still remains very important when you are out and about and of course, please continue to wash your hands rigorously when required.

Even though life has not returned to normal, we are still moving forward providing excellent person centered support for our residents and clients. Our staff continue to be focused on the job at hand while making sure the safety of themselves, team mates, residents and clients are paramount.

Another exciting initiative is our new marketing and advertising campaign that has just been launched. You might hear us on FiveAA or see us in the Sunday Mail, SA Life or Advertiser. We are close to launching our brand new website mid –September. Keep an eye on www.barossavillage.org

bedroom units available at the moment. Living in the Barossa is a fantastic “vine change”, add that to being part of the Barossa Village family, and there is no better place to be.

We have also created a new role for a Community Development Officer that we are currently recruiting for. This is a very exciting opportunity for Barossa Village as we can continue to improve our engagement with volunteers creating many new options for our volunteers to assist us in the important work we do.

GreetingsBy the time you are reading this it will be September and when I think September, I think springtime.

The images that come to mind are of blue skies, flowers in bloom, swooping Maggies and most of all warmer weather. It has been a challenging winter not only on account of the cold but also with what we have been experiencing as a community and country. Here’s to brighter times ahead.

Scammer Beware Information SessionsOver three Wednesday nights last month, Carl Helbig hosted information

sessions at the Joy Rice Centre for our residents, to fortify them with knowledge and confidence in our ongoing fight against scammers and cybercrime.

These were most interesting sessions and the material presented is

available for anyone in our community who was not able to attend. We will definitely look at running this course again at some stage in the future as scams evolve and new ones emerge. Well done Carl and remember “Zero Trust”.

IT information sessionsCarl and I will be putting on several IT support nights in October and November to provide assistance for our ILU Residents with their Laptops, tablets and phones.

These sessions are not about scamming but will focus on setting up and using your device, safe web browsing and troubleshooting. We

will have sessions for IPads/IPhones, Samsung/Android phones & tablets and Windows operating systems.

Booking into these sessions will be essential. We want to keep these groups no larger than 10 participants at a time. If you can’t get in on the first session don’t panic as we will plan more as needed.

The Windows operating system night will be Wednesday October 14, 7.00-8.30 pm , IPhone IPad session Wednesday October 21 and the Android Samsung Tablet session November 4.

Bookings at Reception in advance on 8562 0300. We will also advertise in the October Grapevine.

Counselling SupportAs I mentioned earlier we are in challenging times, for many reasons. The cold weather and all of the associated limitations it places on us will hopefully pass soon. The ongoing national and global situation is also fraught with concerning scenarios. All

of these things can contribute to how we feel in our day to day lives and as a community we need to acknowledge that keeping up a positive mental health headspace can be difficult during such times.

At this point I’d like to share the message that it’s OK to have bad days; in fact, it’s actually quite normal. As a community it’s very important to consider this when dealing with each other and especially when solving a challenge or a misunderstanding. Successful outcomes and helpful solutions are usually the result of good communications and sharing.

At The Lodge we have access to Louise Galanos, Counselling and Wellbeing Consultant. I look forward to sharing my interview with Louise which will be in our next edition of the Grapevine.

Volunteering OpportunityI’m looking for volunteers to assist with managing a few vegetable patches around Scholz Avenue. Let me know if you’re interested. It would be great to have your help.

We’ve continued with planned maintenance and have started work on the preventative maintenance program over the past month. Some of your gutters will be cleaner than before.

Works on the hydro pool have continued and it’s starting to look like a building now, with the units at 19A/B Scholz Ave and 1 Heidrich Court devoured by the ‘big yellow dinosaur’.

Among this progress, the most exciting thing for me has been working with Tom to facilitate “Tom and Ben’s Energy Forum”, which has recently been sidelined by Carl’s “How to Avoid a Scam” sessions, but there was a lot of great discussion and shared experiences that everyone can

benefit from.

We discussed:

Tapping into Discounts

In particular the SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer, free energy efficient products available under schemes like YESS (Your Energy Efficiency Solutions) and even medical concessions are available

Reading your Power Bills

Where to find key information on your bills, for example, identifying that you have received your discounts and where your power usage is recorded

Considering Solar Panels

How to work out your return on investment if installing solar panels. Generally for

a two bedroom two person unit, this will take between 5-7 years; bigger is not always better if you don’t secure good feed-in tariffs; Barossa Village is exploring an idea to see more solar panels installed.

Group Discussion: Energy Saving Ideas

This was a highlight and our ideas can be seen on the opposite page. This was a fantastic way for those that attended to share ideas, because at the end of the day the focus was on saving a bit of money with the added outcome of reducing our power consumption for the benefit of the environment.

Stay safe.

Page 7: September 2020 Grapevine · setting up and using your device, safe web browsing and troubleshooting. We ... IPad session Wednesday October 21 and the Android Samsung Tablet session

Switch appliances off at the wall

Use a power board to turn all things off at once

Use lamps or spot lights – they use less power

Use energy saving globes

Only turn on lights that you need

Thaw meat in the fridge rather than using the mircowave

Use lids on the stove top to reduce cooking times

Boil water with an electrical kettle rather than on the stove top

Use an economy cycle on the dishwasher

Set the fridge at 4-5 degrees and the freezer between -15 to -18 degrees

Use the washing machine when its full

Wash clothes with cold water

Spin clothes thoroughly before drying

Dry on the line instead of the dryer if possible

Get an indoor drying rack

Use warm water wisely

Use timers on lights

Close doors to unused rooms when heating and cooling

Energy Saving IdeasKeep blinds closed to reduce energy required to cool

Try a wheat bag or hot water bottle, an extra blanket?

Look after your cooling or heating system

If you have panels, use your appliances during the day

Use ceiling fans on the winter setting

Turn ovens off at the isolation switch

Get access to available discounts

Skylights for more natural lighting

When building, shorter hot water pipe runs and better insulation, roller shutter facing west

Get a heated throw rug

Avoid opening and closing ovens and fridges

Check the seals on your fridge and freezer to make sure that they are in good condition

Buy an inverter fridge

Don’t use blow heaters – high power demand

Set timers on your heating and cooling

Think about how many watts an appliance uses when operating – the higher it is the more it will cost to run.

The Grapevine Report

The 12th August meeting was very positive, a few apologies but attended by most reps. The highlight was Ben sharing with us, on screen, his working plan for annual preventative maintenance. It is an extensive list, far more than we have had inspected in years past. We hope he will address his plan with residents attending the Annual General Meeting to be held Wednesday 14 October. It affects our quality of life and will interest all residents.

Of the areas that concern us most, air conditioners will be cleaned every 3 months; gutter cleaning has been graded over three levels of need, depending on the number and type of trees nearby. Some inspections will only need to be done six-monthly, some annually. Ben is now tackling some of the issues we have been fighting for over the past few years.

You recently received a letter from Barossa Village seeking your permission to give to your Cluster representative your basic details so that they may relay to you quickly any information from Management that concerns your area. COVID discouraged us from door knocking, but a phone number or an email address will greatly assist. We hope you will return the form to the office quickly.

Another issue we have brought to Ben’s attention is the discrepancies that occur in some residential addresses, especially in Villages and particularly on private roads such as River Road. The concern, of course, is for emergency services to find the right address when called. This is not proving an easy task. Council or Police have not been able to help so Ben will now concentrate on SA Ambulance Service. If you have a key box do remember to give your code to the operator if you need to call 000.

Tom reported on recent information sessions. A summary of the presentation by him and Ben on Energy and Power (about seniors concessions, choices to be made and cost savings) will be sent to all residents. Carl has just completed three evening sessions on Scams and Cyber Security, greatly appreciated by the 25 who attended - an amazing amount of eye opening information! He’s open to repeats, and to developing new educational sessions.

But there was some bad news. Dean Galanos is retiring from the gardening team. We can hardly begrudge him wanting to enjoy what he has enabled us to enjoy in the last few years. We thank him and will miss him greatly, not just for the gardens but for the conversations we have been able to share with him. Dean, we wish you good health and another happy retirement.

The BVRA will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2021. The Constitution was based on one for commercial villages and could benefit from a review. We will put a motion to this effect to the AGM – and we will aim for a new Constitution to be written in plain English!

Carmel Devonish, Secretary, BVRA - September 2020.

We recently caught up with Robyn Cunningham, a resident of our ILU community in Nuriootpa since 2013.Robyn was born in Gawler, the second child in a family of four children, including two brothers and one sister. The family lived near Williamstown where Robyn’s father worked on building the South Para River Reservoir. They then lived in Lyndoch for a time before settling in Nuriootpa.

During the 1970s Robyn went into Nursing and worked at Angaston Hospital and then continued this role at the Freeling Nursing Home. Robyn loved this work and was saddened when she had to give it away due to a health condition.

Robyn then spent the next chapter of her life working at several wineries during that time including Orlando Wines.

In 1995 she married her husband John. Robyn’s father used to encourage her to get out to meet “potentials” and he always said to her, “He’s never

going to come knocking on your door you know, you have to get out there and meet new people.”

Ironically, that’s exactly how Robyn and John met. They were neighbours when John knocked on the door and they ended up together. Needless to say, Robyn enjoyed “reminding” her dad about this!

John and Robyn had 15 happy years living in Smithfield, but John sadly passed away.

Robyn moved to Barossa Village in 2013 to support her mother, long-time resident Pat, who has been a part of our Barossa Village family for 18 years.

Together, they shared the most wonderful adventure when they both traveled to the United States for a dream holiday. They went to Los Angeles and then to Memphis. Robyn and Pat have been huge fans of Elvis Presley over the years,

so they had the thrill of a lifetime visiting Graceland.

On their return from the US, they visited Hawaii where they enjoyed a Luau, something that Pat had always wanted to experience. It was made extra special because she got to do it together with Robyn.

For six years Robyn contributed to Barossa Village as a volunteer in our activities programs and we thank you and appreciate your service.

Good on you Robyn.

Barossa Village Independent Living Units Social Club NotesNineteen members ventured out for the August meeting of our social club. I think Bangers and Mash was the draw card. Kevin welcomed and thanked everyone for coming. Those attending were: Doug Fisher, Bette Kempton, Jackie Chapman, Bev Reid, Nita Jones, Kevin Prouse, Judy Richardson, Helen Roesler, Ruth Jarman, Judy Clarke, Carol McConnachy, Vi Mitchell, Jean Higginbottom, Yvonne Wuttke, Elaine Souter, Rita Dury, Jeannie Whitelaw, Christine Bassham and Magda Lausberg.

The meeting opened at 1.25 p.m. Apologies were sent from Ros Hayward and Di Coverdale.

Happy birthday was sung to Jean, Judy Richardson and Mike.

The minutes of the July meeting were read. Helen asking that they be accepted and Judy Richardson seconding the motion. All those who attended the last meeting agreed.

The members were then told of the activity for the next four months:

September 14th 2020 will be an auction. Please bring a new, wrapped item to the value of $5.00 or more to be auctioned after the usual meeting. This is the main fundraising activity of the year.

October 12th 2020 there will be a show and tell day. Please bring an item of interest that has a story behind it.

November 13th 2020 we hope to have Doug Venning to sing and play his guitar for us. Always good for a sing-a-long.

December 14th 2020 will be the Christmas luncheon. More information at a later date.

Vi read the financial statements for the year and the last couple of months because they were unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances. Vi asked that they be accepted and Judy Clarke seconded the motion. All who attended the previous meetings agreed.

Yvonne asked for a price breakdown for the previous catered for luncheon. It was quite a bit cheaper than going to a restaurant or hotel. She also asked if once used electrical appliances could be used at the auction. It was thought that they would need to be checked by a professional, so would be unsuitable.

As there was no more business Kevin closed the meeting at 1.45 p.m.

We were then entertained by “Bangers and Mash”. Lovely old tunes were enjoyed by all including a medley from “Sound of Music”, “I’m forever blowing Bubbles”, the theme from “Butterflies” and a cute little tune entitled “Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen by the Sea”, among many others.

We all had the best sing-a-long.

A cuppa and afternoon tea concluded the afternoon.

We are always looking for new members, so please come along at 1.15p.m on September 14th, bring along a plate of afternoon tea and for next month only, an item to auction. Thank you so much.

ring Community Lifestyle

Community Lifestyle programs continue to attract new clients and the team were very excited to launch an exercise program for Tanunda. An open day held on the 6th August, at St John’s Lutheran Church was very successful, bringing interested locals to see the program setup.

We continue to offer the exercise program at St Hugh’s in Angaston with the local community embracing the exercises and coming together for lunch and an afternoon activity.

It is great to see the smiles and hear the laughter of clients reconnecting with friends and providing support to each other during our weekly programs.

Exercising provides an opportunity to connect and socialise with others. You’ll experience the many benefits of participating and have the opportunity to connect with like-minded people who want to remain

independent and connected within their community. We have also planned many different afternoon programs with some interesting guest speakers visiting.

If you would like to find out more about our exercise programs, visit us at St John’s, Tanunda or St Hugh’s, Angaston and try for yourself. We can guide you through the various exercises.

Pictured right is Dianne Craig having a go on the peddler, and above is our

Residential LifestyleThe Lifestyle Programs continue to be enjoyed by our residents, with COVID restrictions in place.Life has changed somewhat in Residential Aged Care since COVID and recognising social distancing while attending Lifestyle programs is important to remember.

Residents are getting used to wearing appropriate PPE while cooking and sitting further apart while engaging in their favourite pastimes.

Everyone is using the alcohol hand gel prior to entering the Club Room or at the beginning of an activity. The Lifestyle staff are cleaning down chairs at the end of their programs so much, that are being re-varnished, thanks to Nuriootpa High School.

BasketballShooting a few hoops during Basketball Fun brought back many memories and lots of stories around sports that many residents used to play. Residents encouraged each other along and each goal counted, from a sitting or standing position!

This fun activity also exercises the arms, shoulders and improves hand eyes co-ordination. In between players, residents wiped down the ball with anti-bacterial wipes.

Italian DayTo acknowledge the cultural heritage of our residents with an Italian background, we held an Italian Day with residents enjoying the display of memorabilia from Italy.

Leading up to this day the craft group created decorations and residents made pizzas during a cooking afternoon.

For our Italian movie, we screened a cooking show that showcased different ways of cooking the beautiful food with wines to match. During the show everyone was seated the appropriate distance apart and gelato was served. Residents commented on the different texture of gelato compared to ice cream.

BingoEven when playing the perennial favourite game of Bingo, residents are seated apart with each marker and card wiped down after use.

Volunteers Thanks for all your hard work. Our residents really appreciate every one of you!

We are presently seeking anyone who can speak Italian to visit with two ladies at the Residency. Please contact Julie Cartwright, Lifestyle Manager, on 8562 0300 (option 1).

Pictured on the opposite page are our residents participating in Basketball, Bingo, cooking for Italian Day, enjoying gelato and a movie about Italian food and wine.

It is really easy to get focused on all the rules that we need to follow in the age of COVID we are living in

In this time there is a real sense that if you get it wrong the results could be devastating for everyone. That includes the people we care for, our staff and our wider community. There is also a sense that if we don’t do the right thing, there will be serious regulatory pressure placed on the aged care facility.

Throughout this period, Barossa Village has developed COVID plans,

acquired and planned how to manage our PPE supplies, established workforce management strategies and created flow charts for managing residents and staff who are potentially unwell.

All the while becoming more and more anxious about the possibilities and the responsibilities that are mounting upon us.

As we all go through this together, it is important to remember that we are dealing with people. The decisions that we make have a real person impact. Each time we ease or increase a restriction it changes how we can do our work and how you can interact with your loved ones.

We introduced face masks for staff at the end of August as part of Emergency Declaration Seven. Masks create a barrier that prevents the transfer of disease and they

also create a barrier for you to read my face, see if I am smiling or frowning. The decision for introducing this barrier was made by people who also share our responsibility. They understand what the risks are in making a decision or what could happen if they choose to idly sit by.

Looking at the Barossa Village logo, it states, “people at our heart”. If I am to have people at our heart I have to not be afraid when making decisions that support and protect people. I also have to be prepared for the consequences of these decisions and make sure that at they are supported with good evidence and a social and emotional conscience.

It is important that we have rules. Rules keep us safe and it is in the best interest of everyone to follow rules. Enforcing rules is difficult because it creates an environment where there is perceived power. What right do I have to tell any other person what to do? I believe that I am able to direct what happens at

Hard on Rules, Soft on People

Barossa Village by virtue of my role (i.e. that’s what I’m paid to do), but also as a member of the wider community we have the responsibility to each other to make sure that we are following the rules. If we all guide and support each, other we can share the responsibility of enforcing the rules.

Through all of this let’s remember that we are working with people. People who have feelings just like us. Life may not go back to normal, but life will go on and we need to be adaptable and accepting of this. During this time we need to be hard on the rules and soft on the people. As they say, “Rules are made to be broken” but in this case not intentionally. People on the other hand are easily broken and resilience is a commodity which is now in short supply.

My hope is, the post COVID world will be kinder and simpler for all.

. 21

The only child of Norman and Vera, Trevor was born on May 7, 1940 in Kings Park, Adelaide. At the age of three he moved to Gawler where his father worked for the electricity trust. After living in Gawler for six years the family moved to Angaston. Trevor’s schooling was completed at Gawler, Angaston and Nuriootpa High.

After completing school he furthered his education by becoming a Lutheran Minister which involved five years of studying Theology. As a Christian Minister, Trevor have always enjoyed passing the Gospel Word along, serving in the parishes at Cummins, Christchurch in New Zealand, Pasadena and St John’s in Tanunda.

Trevor met his future wife Gina at church and they married on October 3, 1964 at St Petri Lutheran Church in Nuriootpa. Their family grew, having two sons, Michael and Daniel and three grandchildren.

A keen sportsman, Trevor played in the 1961 Grand Final for West Adelaide where they defeated Norwood.

Well-travelled over the years, Trevor particularly loved Germany, Russia and Latvia, where Gina was born.

Trevor’s other interests included time spent tinkering in his shed and one of his favourite pastimes, which he is missing at the moment, getting in the car and going for a drive with Gina.

Trevor wants his family to know how much he loves them and hopes they will always remember him as a good husband and father.
