2 SPORTS REPORTER September 23 - 29, 2009

Recently I mentioned the word poodle, oftenused to designate a gutter ball, now also knownas a channel ball. Then I brought up the wordlily to identify the 5-7-10 split. Many readerswere unaware of either, and told me so.

Though bowling is generally considered a

sport that doesn’t change much, it seems thatthe bowling dictionary sure does.

An old friend of mine happened to dig up anold listing of bowling terms used a minimum of 50 years ago. You might or might not recognizea few of the following.

Bench Work---conversation intended to upsetor disconcert opponents.

Brooklyn---Ball striking to the left of the headpin. This started in New York and is now uni-versal.

Jersey Hit---What Brooklyn bowlers (right-ies) call a left hand hit. So do Eastern

Pennsylvania bowlers.

Belly Your Ball---To arch it more or toincrease the width of your hook from an insidestarting point.

Bowleds---Women bowlers.

CC---Two hundred game.

Grave Yards---Tough alleys. Usually thetoughest pair in an establishment.

Kegeler-Kegel---A synonym for bowler com-ing from the German kegel. In its Americanizedform common way of spelling is kegler, kegling, but many prefer kegeler or kegeling.

Mother-In-Law---The number 7 pin. Evolvedfrom the old western game of five-back inwhich you did not count pins knocked downunless you made the 7 pin.

Puddle---A gutter ball.

Pumpkin---Synonym for bowling ball.

Railroad---Two or more pins which remainstanding with intermediate pins knocked out infront and between. Most of the country usesthis term. In Wisconsin such a leave is called asplit. The Badger bowlers call a pin in the dark a railroad.

Sandwich Game---Same as Dutch 200.(Alternating strikes and spares for a 200)

Umbrella Ball---A nosy hit where pins seem tofly in every direction for a strike.

Woolworth---The 5 and 10 split or railroad,named after the 5 & 10 cent store.

Many of those terms evolved from leaguebowling, and were coined by average bowlers. These days most of the new words originate onthe pro tour, and have much to do with thepower of the young bowlers and the effects of the new equipment particularly the powerfulbowling balls.

Most of the pros probably would not recog-nize half of the terms used half a century ago.

But almost any bowler will recognize one of the following, Bedposts, Fence Posts, GoalPosts, Mule Ears, Snake Eyes and a number of unmentionables to identify the unwanted---thedreaded 7-10 split.

A new bowling season has arrived but there is one USBC rule changethat I am kicking myself for notexpressing my views. I am going toexcuse myself for my earlier silence

because it is a great rule in my opin-ion but parents have convinced methat it also was unfair because itwas not implemented in one-year segments.

At first I was elated when I readthat the USBC had decided toreduce the age of so-called junior

bowlers from 22 to 20 this season.Several years ago I wrote a criticalcolumn about bowling allowing 22year olds to bowl as juniors. I

pointed out that no other sport Iknew about allowed 22 year oldMEN or WOMEN to bowl in jun-ior competition. I thought then andI think now that 18 should be themaximum age for junior bowlers, unless they were still in high schoolor turned 19 after the league seasonstarted.

Remember, no high school Iknow about allows an athlete toflunk a couple grades so that he can

play his senior prep year in footballor baseball or basketball as a 20-

year-old. That column promptedone of my readers on www.bowl-ingdigital,com to write me a nastyletter that said I and his proprietor were wrecking junior bowling bytaking such a rigid stand about

bowlers who are going to be 21 or 22 years old this season.

I wrote back that I favor thereduction of the junior bowling ageto 20 and even would like to see itgo to 18 except in exceptions.

Then I got a letter from a bowlingmother who said that it was not fair that they reduced it to 20 withoutgiving two years advance notice. She said her son had planned his

college bowling career with the old22-year-old rule in mind.

I got to thinking and I think she isright, they should have grandfathered the 21 and 22 year old

bowlers who planned to bowl in junior leagues this season or nextseason in case for a 21 year thisseason who don't turn 22 beforeAug. 1, 2010.

But I still firmly believe that 18should be the maximum age for a

junior bowler -- worldwide. I have been a stickler on the age divisionsince covering high school sportsas a young reporter for The MiamiHerald.

In 1962 I covered the BPAA National All-Star Tournament thatran 11 straight days at the MiamiBeach Convention center.

A talented high school bowler from Kansas City by the name of Judy Audsley made the cut from222 women bowlers to 24 so thatmeant she would miss two weeksof high school. I wrote a storyabout her great bowling ability andthe Herald took a picture of the cuteteenager bowler on the stub lanestudying her school books.

After the tournament was over Iwrote a column and commented

that I thought the BPAA and bowl-ing was opening itself to a lot of criticism from educator by allow-ing any junior bowler under 18,whose high school class had notgraduated, to participate in such along tournament and miss twoweeks of school.

Ben Booke, a bowling proprietor inMiami who was on the BPAA tour-nament board, agreed and the BPAAadded the age rule the next year.

The PBA used a similar age rulefor many years.

In case you never heard of JudyAudsley, she later became a greatchampion and was inducted into

the WIBC Hall of Fame as JudySoutar.
