hen I first graduated fromthe University of Alberta,Faculty of Dentistry, I had

the privilege to practice with professorDr. Douglas MacDougall in Edmonton(EDDS President 1964). I remember to thisday that his highest recommendation toa new dentist was to join the Edmonton &District Dental Society. He said: “You willnever regret that decision; you willreceive some of the finest continuingeducation in dentistry, meet your fellowcolleagues, learn and grow with yourcommunity and be a lifelong learner.”That advice was not only true but asimportant today as it was then.

A SIMPLE BEGINNINGThe Edmonton & District Dental Society(EDDS) is Alberta’s oldest dental societyand one of the most well attended dentalsocieties in North America. In 1910, theforerunner of the EDDS, the EdmontonDental Club, was founded. It had elevencharter members and Dr. J. G. Robertswas its first president. The admission feewas two dollars. Three years later, thename was changed to the EdmontonDental Society with its first organizationalmeeting held on February 25, 1913. Aconstitution and bylaws were adoptedand Dr. J. G. Roberts again served as pres-ident. There were 23 charter membersand the meetings were held every secondmonth. The fee for the season was set atfive dollars. New members were requiredto read a paper to the society. The EDDS meetings were well reported

in the Edmonton Bulletin and sixteenmembers of the society volunteered theirservices one day a month to work in thedental clinic of the Edmonton PublicSchool Board. The willingness of pastEDDS members and their support staff tocontribute to their community and tothose less fortunate continues to this day.In 1915, musical entertainment was

provided at five meetings; solos and read-ings were presented by women. For manyyears there was an active “dental wives”social club. This demographic hascertainly changed over the last fourdecades as more women have earneddental degrees and become activemembers of the EDDS and the dentalprofession. Social functions, though, continue to be an important part of thissociety. In 1919, the first organized golf tourna-

ment was held and picnics and baseballgames were offered during the summermonths. Golf tournaments and a curlingleague have remained popular sportingevents enjoyed by many EDDS memberstoday. In 1923, a formal dinner dance washeld at the Macdonald Hotel whichbecame an established practice in thefollowing years. Social events such as thePresident’s Ball and Dental Wives Clubchanged over time, becoming less popu-lar and giving way to other events suchas the lobster fest.During two world wars, members leav-

ing to serve their country were honouredand, frequently, members of the CanadianArmy Medical Corps were guests. At the

conclusion of World War II, many soldiersreturned to Canadian universities tocomplete their education. A numberstudied dentistry and joined dental soci-eties across Canada including the EDDS.With military dental clinics in CFBGriesbach and Namao (now EdmontonGarrison), the EDDS has a close rela-tionship with our military colleagues.

THE SECOND HALF-HUNDREDThe past fifty years have been a transi-tion in many ways for the dental profes-sion, the EDDS and life in general. Wehave witnessed great innovations andimprovements that have and continueto shape us and our world:• Introduction of the air rotor and high-speed instrumentation including ultra-sonics and lasers;• Improved and advanced tooth andceramic bonding has changed how werestore teeth and address the public’sdemand for esthetics;• Introduction of implants, implanttherapy and the supporting bone andsoft tissue augmentation and surgicalprocedures;• Improved research and understand-ing of physiologic and pathologicprocesses and our ability to prevent andtreat disease; and• Introduction of computers, internet, search engines, cell phone technology, the way we communicate, digitalizationof film – photography and radiographs.Community and social responsibilities

have remained a very important part ofthe EDDS history. The EDDS and manyof its members have graciously donatedtheir dental supplies, money and time toprovide dental treatment for the BoyleMcCauley Health Centre and inner cityresidents who would not readily haveaccess to dental health care. The StartSchool Smiling initiative allows elemen-

tary grade children free dental check upsand teeth cleaning each September. OpenWide, where one day of free dental careis provided to those with high needs andlimited resources, is now provided bythe students and staff of the U of A,School of Dentistry. Donations and volun-teering continue in third world countrieswhere dental services are unavailable. Many EDDS members have provideddental services in such areas as CentralAmerica, South America, the Caribbean,South-East Asia and, most recently, inUganda.

AN ENDURING LEGACYDespite many changes and challengeseach board has faced, there are twoareas that are the EDDS’s enduring pillarsof strength: providing an unparalleledhigh level of continuing dental educa-tion, and its relationships.Continuing dental education is really

the rasion d’être of this society. TheEDDS has provided the best speakersavailable in North America, speaking onevery aspect and specialty of dentistryand other topics that have enriched thequality of our lives.Relationships are a more difficult

aspect to articulate, however they are avital part of the EDDS. We have an idealplace to meet with our friends and dentalschool classmates, meet new colleagues, invite our office and support staff tomeetings to learn together, an idealvenue for dentists and dental specialiststo interact and share ideas, and theopportunity for the dentist and allieddental health professionals such as assis-tants, receptionists, hygienists and tech-nicians to interact with each other. There has always been an important,

symbiotic relationship between theEDDS and the University of Alberta,Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry,

School of Dentistry. Many members ofthe EDDS also participate as clinical andacademic instructors, teaching staff orresearchers, serving in many differentdisciplines. In 1994, then president ofthe University of Alberta, Dr. PaulDavenport, recommended the closure ofthe Faculty of Dentistry as a cost-cuttingmeasure. The EDDS took an active role toprevent Alberta’s only dental schoolfrom closing, inviting Dr. Davenport andthe dean, Dr. Norman Wood, to a specialmeeting to hear both sides of the issueand have the opportunity to pose ques-tions. The School of Dentistry is now partof the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. The EDDS maintains a close relation-

ship with organized dentistry. ManyEDDS members and board membershave served in various positions withthe Alberta Dental Association andCollege and have also served in advisoryor governance roles with the CanadianDental Association. Each year, the ADA+Cis invited by the EDDS board to presentto its members about various topics ofmember and regulatory interest.I am proud of the dentists who volun-

teer to serve as board members and whocontinue to provide guidance and lead-ership for the EDDS. Today, the EDDSholds Alberta’s premier trade show andconference – the Northwest DentalExposition. This year, the two largest dental soci-

eties in Alberta – the Edmonton &District Dental Society and the Calgary &District Dental Society – celebrate 100years. Through their ongoing programs,Alberta dentists continue to improvetheir education, knowledge and skills.Ultimately, it is all Albertans who bene-fit from these societies, not just withbetter educated dentists, but throughimproved health and dental health. •
