Salt for the Week

Today’s account of the rich man

and Lazarus (Lk 16:19-31) is

stunning. No, not due to the

rich man’s purple clothes and

over-the-top lifestyle. What’s

stunning is the distance between him and Lazarus. The distance was so great, Jesus

described it as a chasm!

What’s stunning is, that the chasm was

the result of a decision.

The decision was that Lazarus didn’t merit

to be helped, much less acknowledged.

And now in the afterlife, the rich man is

separated by the chasm, the decisions

that he made while alive.

What about us?

Any chasms in our lives?

Any choices to separate ourselves from

those who desperately need our help, our

friendship, our noticing their hopeless

lives?

The time to help is now.

To think and see and act and decide for

those who are powerless

is something we all can do.

Let’s not wait for someone to come back

from the dead to get our attention…

because according to Jesus, it ain’t gonna

happen!

Peace—

PRAY AND FAST FOR AN END TO ALL VIOLENCE

Don’t forget the Saint Mary Fun Day this Sunday, with food starting at 11:30, kids activities at 12:15 and live auction at 1:00!

See you there!

The Emmaus Pastorate offers Spiritual Direction as a way of journeying with someone on your spiritual path. Sister Norma Jean Holthaus, OSF, comes to St. Mark once a month for direction times. If you are interested, contact Sister Norma Jean (319-750-6032 or [email protected]).

Congratulations to~ Levi and Courtney Keppler, whose

daughter Eleanor was baptized at St. Mark on September 15. We apologize to the Kepplers fo the error in last week’s bulletin. Vincent and Caileye Boock whose

daughter Ellie was baptized at St. Mary on September 21.

For Parents and Children

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

We encourage all parents to take advantage

of this weekly opportunity to engage their

children with the Mass and deepen their

appreciation for the richness of their faith

life.

This week, reflect as a family on how you can

share your wealth and your gifts with others

in need. Discuss how you may have failed to

act on behalf of others. Make an action plan

and follow it. Pray that all of you might turn

outward toward God and the people of God.

Discussion Questions

1. Think about times in your life when you

have failed to act and help someone. How

have you turned inward at the expense of

others?

2. How can you share your gifts with others?

To whom in your life can you reach out?

Act Now To Save on Taxes! If you are 70½ years old, have an IRA and don't need your full required distribution, instead of paying more in taxes on that distribution, use your IRA to help further our mission by transferring it to us, a qualified charity. You won’t be taxed on the transfer, and it counts toward your required distribution. Best of all, it’s easy. Contact us or your IRA administrator to see how you can roll over into tax savings.

The Power of Mass

by Bert Ghezzi

Reflections of Daily Attendees

“Celebrating the Daily Mass Community—I

delight in seeing the same elderly couples

each morning holding hands in prayer just as

they did on their wedding day. I’m

encouraged by our ninety-year-old priest who

celebrates Mass with deep reverence even

after sixty years and thousands of liturgies.

I’m thrilled that people know our family’s

names, ask about our children, and inquire

about our spiritual life. I used to constrain

my ‘spiritual time’ to a half-hour alone, where

I would read my Bible, and pray all be myself,

but I’ve since realized the great value of

praying, worshiping, singing, and communing

with others. A community of faith

strengthens its members as they edify and

encourage each other to new heights.”

Emmaus Pastorate NCYC Fund-raiser—This is our last fund-raiser for NCYC and it has multiple purposes—to help with all of the incidentals that go along with NCYC such as food, journals, trading items, etc. An even bigger goal is to bring the Emmaus Pastorate community together. We've been trying to get t-shirts for the entire student body and have not yet been successful. So we are going deeper. We are selling Emmaus Pastorate

shirts to the entire pastorate. These are the same color as the NCYC shirts with the same back. We want to sell as many as possible to show our support for our bigger community, the pastorate.

Please contact NCYC participants or Janine Berns or Lori Keppler to order your shirt. We are only selling for two weeks, so get your orders in by October 6. Orders will be passed out at the parish name on your order form.

Thank you for your support and let's all wear red to support not only our NCYC students, but also the Emmaus Pastorate!

Order forms will be available in the back of each Pastorate church!

October/The Month of the Rosary—Older Catholics remember October as a month of Mary, a month when we prayed the Rosary with our families each night. To promote the praying of this contemplative prayer, the Rosary Warriors of the Emmaus Pastorate will be teaching faith formation classes in the Pastorate how to say the Rosary. We

welcome everyone to join us at St. Patrick Parish in Colesburg at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9. Help the young ones learn to pray the Rosary!

Paul Dolan of the Emmaus

Pastorate is a member of the

diaconate formation process

for the Archdiocese of

Dubuque. His next step is

Institution of Lector, which will be

celebrated on Thursday, October 3, here at

St. Mark at 7:00 p.m. Archbishop Jackels

will preside at this special Mass. St. Mark is

honored to be hosting this great celebration.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Congratulate

Paul as he celebrates this special occasion.

Assure him that you will continue to pray for

him and his family as he continues his

preparation for ordination to the diaconate.

In two years, the Emmaus Pastorate will be

blessed to have a deacon.

Following the ceremony, everyone is invited

to the reception that will the held in

St. Mark Parish Center.

PRAY FOR THE EMMAUS PASTORATE.

Parish Life—Our September St. Mark Parish Life meeting was outstanding. Twenty-three people participated and had a chance to discuss the staffing at St. Mark’s office. We want to keep that ball rolling, so topics for future parish life meetings have been developed. For the October 14 meeting, Pete Buschmann will talk about how he stepped out of his boat 14 years ago to establish the Greeley Community Church. His talk is titled “Reluctant Pastor.”
