Aaron Nathaniel Reyes of Victoria was sentenced to 25 years in prison last week for his part in a violent home invasion in the Telfair subdivision nearly one year ago.
Shortly before 10 pm, on a Monday night in late September of 2012, a Sugar Land woman answered a knock at her front door of her Baldwin Crossing home to men purporting to be pizza delivery. As the victim soon learned, the men at her front door were not delivery
men of any sort; they forced their way into her home at gunpoint and beat her in the head in the process. The
men ransacked her home taking televisions, cash, jewelry, phones, and the family’s 2003 Toyota Camry. In December of 2012 Sugar Land Police identified Maydevis Molina, 23,

on the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan for the last 18 months and it is moving toward final adoption. The plan is an updated version of 2008's Hike and Bike Trails Master Plan and aims to create an urban trail system that would make it possible for residents to walk or ride bikes virtually anywhere in the city.

only public comment relating to the county’s new budget to be adopted in a matter of days has come from Kim Janke of Fairchild. Although a county agenda item addressed by Janke was not about the new budget but proposed pay hikes, the end result directly impacts the budget, which has been under development since the beginning

It’s important to note that Fort Bend County reports its budget reflects more revenue from property taxes than last year by $12,633,660, a 4.61 percent increase. These boards meet monthly beginning in January to begin their work preparing the budget so that on the night of the special joint budget meeting, there are no surprises. Next Monday, the City of Sugar Land will have solicited public input for its water master plan and if you make it to the meeting, you’re bound to know where water that runs from your faucet originates and much more.
The city’s process to update its Water Master Plan next week will include a variety of opportunities for the community to provide input and feedback, reports the city. Topics relating to drought management, water use and conservation are essential components of a water master plan that was last updated in 2007.

at city hall from 6-8 p.m. will include a presentation about the plan update, the city’s plans for future water needs, and there will also be a review of community input that has already been gathered, according to the city. Residents, who may have already been in touch

Bicyclist struck & killed in Stafford train fatality By Karen Daniels
Last Wednesday, August 28, at 7:40pm, a 72 year-old man by the name of Joseph Guerrero, was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Stafford, at the intersection of Hwy 90A and FM 1092.

Department said that during their investigation they learned that Mr. Guerrero, a Houston resident, was "known to ride his bike everywhere," however, the reason for his being out at this spot is not known.
This particular intersection in Stafford is a "Quiet Zone."

I’m thinking about using a DIY kit to refinish my tub. What results should I expect?

Compressed nitrogen has long been used to inflate the tires of race cars and aircraft. Regular air is approximately 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and 1 percent water vapor. The oxygen and water vapor can degrade tires and wheels, shortening tire life. Nitrogen
inflation is now available from many commercial and passenger car dealers.
Slower Inflation Pressure Loss - A tire inflated with regular compressed air will lose about one and a half to two psi of pressure per month. Most of the pressure loss is due to oxygen molecules permeating through the tire rubber. Replacing the air with 95 to 98 percent nitrogen reduces the pressure loss to less than one-half psi per month. Nitrogen will not cause the inner lining of a tire to degrade, extending its useful life. That being said, the use of such deadly force affects all of us who roam the same streets, grocery aisles, shopping centers and neighborhoods.
So now that we have the mundane out of the way, let’s get to the real meat of this subject; What to carry with your gun!
It’s all about the ensemble. For you guys, a nice leather holster tucked quietly into the waistband of your trousers in a nice touch; however there is always the other option, the shoulder-holster. That pancake holster, you might want to re-think that, just say’n.
And for the ladies, you are NEVER going to achieve that fashion statement you are looking for without the proper accessories. I beg you, never, never ever put a gun in your purse and expect to use it as a weapon. Unless, you intend to hit someone with it! About a year or so ago, I saw the perfect CHL accessory, Yep, it is Raspberry and ever so clever. It is a .380 caliber and made by a reputable gun manufacturer that could be set off with a nice zebra holster, yes’m now you have yourself a true fashion statement! And the crook you are going to arm with it, when they take it away - after your 4 hours of training…well, the woman in his life will appreciate it too.
There are some issues the Legislature forgot. Like how about giving the citizenry a heads up by making that handgun licensee carry that hog-leg where we can all see it? Shouldn't the public have the right to know who's pack'n.... so we can get away? Or at least contemplate where to tuck and roll if shooting starts and who 's got the guns.
While the four hours of classroom training will not stop accidental discharges, or stupid mistakes, it does reduce the amount of time that the CHL instructor can impress upon their students how pulling the trigger of a gun will forever change their lives. Few are against using deadly force in the protection of life but even in those circumstances that action lives with an individual forever.
In Texas, as in many other states carrying a gun is a personal choice, and with a CHL a legal one. However, the ramifications of that choice will have an effect on you, your family, and the entire community. Carrying and using a firearm can be a very heavy burden.

Light at the End of Carpal TunnelCarpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a painful hand condition caused by
the compression of a major nerve that is covered by a tunnel that occurs from the wrist to the hand. Compression of this nerve may lead to progressive pain, numbness, and weakness in the hands. People who suffer from CTS may feel tingling in all the fingers except the little pinky finger. Pain may radiate through the arm and shoulder. Many people have a tendency to drop objects because of the weakness in the hands. People who have certain conditions like diabetes and alcoholism may have a higher chance of CTS due to a higher tendency of nerve damage. Also, those who work with certain tools and in an assembly line may have a higher frequency of CTS.
While there is no cure for CTS, there are certain measures that can be taken to help reduce the progression of the disease. A wrist splint can be worn at night to help prevent any nighttime symptoms that cause awakening. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) can be taken to help relieve shortterm pain. Corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone may be injected into the wrist to help prevent inflammation of the nerve. Surgical correction of the condition may be an option for certain individuals with severe symp toms.

If a doctor’s authorization is not implemented for LTC, benefits for care cannot begin.

At $10.95 a plate, the sliced beef and sausage lived up to its reputation. Both could have had a stronger smoked flavor for my taste. The sides were typical fare, nothing outstanding. But hey, it’s about the meat, not the sides.
The sauce was red and thin, and tasted more like spiced up tomato sauce; lame to say the least and a little distracting. A perfect brisket should not require sauce, but for those who prefer it, it took away from the flavor of the meat.

The issue of damaged interior streets for the City of Meadows Place has been a real concern for some time now. At this month's City Council meeting, two ordinances passed unanimously to collect and hold a new tax to pay for future road repairs. This fee, assessed as part of the garbage collection, is $5 dollars per month, per resident.
Mayor Charles Jessup explained that the city does not have enough funds allocated for the excessive amount of road repairs needed. TxDOT helps with repairs to West Airport and S. Kirkwood, but it's up to them to repair their neighborhood streets. By year's end, the fund

of Houston, as one of the suspects in the case and said Aaron Nathaniel Reyes, 19, had been arrested for his participation in the home invasion on October 30.
During Reyes’ trial the victim testified that she opened the door to Reyes and his crew because she was expecting her son. While there was discussion at the door about not ordering a pizza, the four intruders forced their way into the home.
Testimony also revealed that Reyes had repeatedly kicked and pistol-whipped her in the head going so far as to knock out a tooth and cause serious injuries and extreme bruising.
According to the victim, she, her husband, and daughter were forced to the floor at gunpoint under threats of death
and sexual assault. All three family members were bound and blindfolded with duct tape. Testimony also revealed that the intruders were in the home for as long as thirty minutes before fleeing with the stolen goods.
A tip to Crime Stoppers led to the arrest of Reyes and another co-defendant, 19 year-old Tyler Quinn.
“The level of violence here was shocking to even the most seasoned of officers and prosecutors,” said Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Pfeiffer. He and Zahra Jivani Fenelon prosecuted the case. Richmond attorney Larry McDougal represented Reyes in the 268th Distort Court of Judge Brady Elliott. While Reyes was tried before a jury, he chose to have Judge Elliott assess his sentence. With a conviction of Aggravated Robbery where a deadly weapon was used, Reyes has to serve at least one-half of his 25 year sentence before he is eligible for parole.
Tyler Quinn is set for trial for this same offense on October 21, 2013.

recreation centers and areas of interest within Sugar Land's city limits. There are also longer range plans that include connecting Sugar Land's ETJ to the trail system.
"At the end of the day, it creates a great network that connects all parts of the city so you can literally go from one side of the city to the other on a bicycle," said Jim Carillo, Vice President of Halff Associates, a consulting firm hired by the city to assist with the master plan.
The 10-year plan calls for the city to construct or convert an additional 65 miles of bicycle side paths (wider than said that the elected officials’
salaries could be scaled down a little bit. Essentially, he was asking for some of the funds intended to be used for the proposed raises to also go towards employee raises, “those people that work for the people of Fort Bend County as you do.” He referred to them as “the janitors that clean your office, people that are doing our mowing, the people that are working for the drainage, those people are just as worthy.” He cited calculations about how a percentage of 11 to 12 percent on $100,000 is much more than 11 to 12 percent on $40,000.
County Judge Bob Hebert responded to Janke’s comments noting that the proposed increase in the judges’ salaries is dictated by state statute. The 12 percent increase in judges salaries comes from this year’s, the 83rd

Much of the city's current 65 miles of bicycle trails consists of shared-use trails constructed on the property of Municipal Utility Districts and Homeowner Associations. According to the task force, Sugar Land has just three miles of bike lanes as of 2013.
Challenges exist in figuring out ways to safely get pedestrians and bicycles across major barriers like railroad crossings, state highways and the Brazos River. The city is working with the Texas Department of Transportation to figure out a way to use the existing bridge along Highway 59 to get bikes and people across the Brazos.
"We're looking to use the space underneath the bridge itself that would be completely
separate from the traffic and provide a nice way to cross the river," said Carillo.
Part of the estimated $36 million dollar price tag would be offset by federal grants. Other segments would be paid for by developers in new subdivisions. The November bond election, which calls for $10 million to be spent on a series of bike trails in the city and directly ties into the master plan, would also provide a funding boost.
Legislature’s, appropriation of over $17 million per fiscal year for judicial raises. The funds reportedly cover raises and increases in retirement benefits for Texas Supreme Court justices, Court of Criminal Appeals judges, district judges, county court-at-law judges. For example, that is what led Fort Bend County to authorize the increase in district judges’ state paid salary from $125,000 to $140,000. The county further allowed for a supplement it pays which may be increased to $18,000 a year, when its budget is adopted this month.
As for other county elected officials, Judge Hebert said that like the judges, they did not get a pay raise for the last seven years and he also cited calculations stating that the proposed raise over the last seven years was an annual increase of around 1.5 percent.

Fort Bend County elected officials may receive close to a 9.5 percent increase in salary with county commissioners’ pay going to $112,000 from $102,350 plus a $2,400 supplement, the county judge’s salary will increase to $117,600 from $107,470 plus other supplements amounting to almost $10,000, district judges and county court at law judges may receive an over 11 percent bump.
Starting next month, Fort Bend County will be operating under a new budget, the one for fiscal year 2014. But first, the proposed budget will need to be adopted by way of public hearings set for next week, September 9 and 10, when public comments are solicited in accordance with a published legal notice.

It can start as a dull ache — barely noticeable — but by the end of the day you’re clutching your forehead in pain. “Most of the time, headaches are a nuisance and nothing to worry about,” says Rajesh Bindal, M.D., neurosurgeon and medical director of the neuroscience program at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “However, if headaches disrupt your life on a regular basis, they should be discussed with a physician.”
Headaches can come and go with no warning and no clear cause. Other times, they can be a symptom of another disease or condition. Knowing the symptoms of different types of headaches can help you get the appropriate treatment.
• Tension headache. Your headache might be due to tension if the pain is dull and achy. Tension headaches are also usually
accompanied by a sore neck and can often be treated with over-the-counter pain medications.
• Migraine. A migraine is characterized by throbbing, severe pain that lasts from four to 72 hours. The pain can also be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. If you feel the symptoms of a migraine coming on, rest in a quiet, dark room. A hot or cold compress on the forehead can help, as can trying to sleep. If home remedies don’t work, talk to your physician about other non-drug therapies or prescription medications.
• Chronic headache. If you experience headaches more than 14 days of a month, you might have chronic headaches. They can feel moderate to severe, and they may be a sign of an underlying condition.

year is $134,873. If the governing body adopts the effective tax rate for this year

Veritas will donate $3 for every lunch and $7 for
every dinner sold from its special menus as part of the Pretty in Pink-Town Square fundraiser, which is scheduled for Friday, October 11.

The Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce’s Education Division will host the 6th Annual State of the Schools Luncheon on Friday, September 13, from 11 am – 1 pm at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square.
The State of the Schools luncheon brings together the Superintendent of Schools from Stafford Municipal School District – Dr. Lance Hindt, Lamar Consolidated School District – Dr. Thomas Randle, Fort Bend Independent School District – Charles Dupre, to address issues and share successes in public education in 2013.
This event is a program of the Fort Bend Chamber’s Education Division whose mission is to provide a critical link between the academic and business sectors in the county

Please attend an intimate Tea Party at the historic Dew House/DeWalt Heritage Center in Missouri City, on September 14, from 2pm until 4pm., in Kitty Hollow Park near Sienna Plantation.
The house has been preserved to reflect the history and way of life--not only of the Dew family--but the families who lived in the area during a period of significant development in Texas.
The Docents of Dew House have chosen to present this event to reflect the 1920s. It was a time of great change in our country and the glory days of Dew House. While the Jazz
age roared in the big cities, Victorian traditions were still celebrated in many homes across the country.
While enjoying a tour of the Dew House, guests will learn about innovations in food, dress and culture of the 1920s. All guests are invited to wear their favorite hat or select from one of ours.
Following the tour, a formal tea will be served in the lovely dining room. Our menu includes traditional finger sandwiches, fruit, an assortment of sweet treats, lemonade? and, of course, tea.

Some consider Danny Nguyen a newcomer, but he’s been around the block and what a motivational speaker he’s become. He also happens to live in Missouri city, where he serves as a city councilmember. These days he’s been featured on what seems to be the makings of being on
a speaker’s circuit before corporate bodies and others.
Just last week, Nguyen was at the International Trade Center on Bellaire near us locally, presenting a powerful message with personal insights that had the attention of a business community making the realization that economic development vis a vis business opportunities have changed…for the better. Accept the global reality and benefit from it. That’s basically his message packed with personal experiences that inspire personal direction aimed at successful enterprises.
Most recently, Nguyen was in Panama with business
leaders encouraging good will and economic business opportunities for the local area, not in his capacity as a politician, but because of his business savvy. He’s also led delegations on trade missions to Indonesia and Vietnam.
“No one should be homeless in America,” he told his audience at the International Trade Center the other day.
Many believe he’s right. This commercial real estate company owner has a formula of his own and his successes are further helping shine the spotlight on Fort Bend County. Admirers continue to follow his developing story in search of the American dream he’s living. A dream he shared with Oliver North, when he was here.
