SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY XAVIERITE THE EYES AND EARS OF THE STUDENTS the Wednesday September 7, 2011 Vol. 81 No. 2 www.thexavierite.com p. 16 Cougars put Tigers to Shane p. 12 A review of the new Red Hot Chili Peppers p. 4 A message from President Wiseman Nurses fored to Orland Capus apus Paring iproes By Ruby Venus Senior News Editor By Genevieve Bonadonna Editor in Chief Saint Xavier University is nationally recognized as one of the top nursing schools in the Midwest. With the largest incoming freshman class that the university has seen and the increased interest in the nursing program, the School of Nursing has seen an accumulation in the number of students admitted into the program. With this gain in admittance, Junior I nursing students, or students in their second semester of nursing classes, had to be moved to SXU’s Orland Park campus. “This year, we’ve increased our number from 75 to 100 Junior I nursing students,” said Peg Gallagher, Associate Dean of the School of Nursing. “This increase meant that it would be difficult to accommodate the large number of students with limited classroom availability and lab space in the Chicago campus.” Gallagher continues to relate that the Orland Park campus offers available classrooms and high tech lab rooms, where students are able to practice their hands on skills before going out into the clinical setting. Gallagher said, “The two classes that Junior I’s are taking are nursing theory classes in preparation for their clinicals. Students who are taking classes in Orland Park will be there for the first six weeks of classes before they move on to the hospital environment.” Some future students were concerned about the idea of being shuttled back and forth from the Chicago campus to Orland Park. “I think that it’s unfair that they are being moved to the Orland Park campus and having lectures delivered to them through Skype,” said Laura Yach, a Sophomore I nursing student. “I’m potentially going to be in that position in about a year and I don’t really understand why they would bus students there to receive an electronic lecture.” In response to these concerns, Gallagher said, “Even though the lecture is shown via Skype, there are still instructors there that teach the hands-on skills. Orland Park is a facility that meets the needs of students and is there with a lab that is equipped for student use.” From the vantage point of Student Affairs, VP John Pelrine said, “We could use more facilities and faculty. We want the best for our students and this meant that we had to find a place to accommodate the large class size. Orland Park has a state of the art lab and students are offered a bus that takes them to and from the site.” Some of the nursing students are happy to have classes in the Orland Park campus. “I love the Orland Park Campus! It’s a beautiful campus. I’m a commuter, so to me the drive is not that bad. It only takes 30-40 minutes to get there,” said Monica Stoch, a Junior I nursing student. Another Junior I nursing student, Cezry Geluz said, “I am a commuter to begin with, so I don’t mind the drive to the Orland Park Campus. The campus is beautiful and is a great place to study during breaks because there isn’t a lot of people around to cause distractions.” While these commuter students do not find the drive that bad, some nursing students find it more convenient to drive in their own cars to get to Orland Park as the shuttle service only goes out once and comes back once. This often conflicts with athlete certain students’ practice and game schedules. Because these athlete nursing students are expected to be back in time for their practices and games, they needed to figure out a way to minimize fuel and time costs. Bob Heersema, head volleyball coach said, “The girls use the shuttle service once a week and only one way, I pick them up in the afternoon. We practice at 3:30p.m. and they get out of class well before the bus would pick them up. If the bus schedule was different they would use the service more. I pick them up to help with their gas expense.” The two classes that take place at the Orland Park campus, Therapeutics and Care of Older Adults, usually occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To make it less of a hassle to drive out to the Orland Park campus, the School of Nursing made it so that students could make one trip a week by combining the normally three hour long classes into a one-day six hour long class. “Students either come to the Tuesday class or the Thursday class, so instead of making two trips a week, they only have to go there once a week,” said Gallagher. In deciding how to best address the large number of students in the Junior I class, Gallagher said, “We met early last semester to plan out a way to best meet the students’ needs. Orland Park can accommodate the number of students we have, allows an access to technology, and a place were in-lab skills have been practiced for a few semesters now.” Another sophomore nursing student, Katie Munger said, “I personally am not experiencing this because I’m not starting my actual nursing classes until second semester, but I think its completely unfair. That’s a The Orland Park Campus. Photo: Saint Xavier University Parking on campus at Saint Xavier University has improved as students have gotten familiar with the campus, according to Public Safety Director Chuck Frazzini. “Every year, the start of the semester brings heavy traffic for the first few weeks,” said Frazzini. With the reality that fall 2011 has brought the largest incoming freshman class in school history, questions were sparked from some students over whether SXU had enough parking space. “I worried that I’d be perpetually late to class because I couldn’t find a parking spot those first few days,” said Elizabeth Klyczek, a senior sociology major and commuter student. “It got better eventually. I guess it evened out.” The highest amount of traffic occurs within the first three days of classes as students are just getting acclimated to the new semester. “The traffic moderates as everyone gets familiar with the campus or their new schedules,” Frazzini said. Monday and Wednesday morning classes bring the most amount of traffic There have been five reported accidents between Aug. 20 and Sept. 4, all involving drivers parking their cars,” according to Frazzini. One accident involved a vehicle backing into a traffic lane and striking a vehicle in traffic. The other four accidents occurred when drivers hit a parked car either entering or exiting a parking spot. All accidents that were reported no injuries. Frazzini compared incidents from Apr. 21, 2010 to Apr. 26, 2010 where four people reported minor accidents— an indication that vehicle accidents can happen at any time. He warned, “A little caution goes a long way,” Frazzini also advised going to the Pulaski Center, Lot No. 14, as an alternative option when parking is scarce. Public Safety is in charge of patrolling the campus and monitoring the traffic and parking conditions on a daily basis. They also assist people with finding their way around campus. A lack of language choices at SXU…students’ faults?

By Mary CraneCopyEditor

Manyofthenewfreshmenandtransferstudentsmayhavenoticedalackofforeignlanguage choices offered to them throughCLAWSthispastsummer .However,thisisnotanewsituationforreturningSaintXavierstudents.SomereturningSXUstudentsprobablyeventhinkeveryregistrationtime,“WhydoesCLAWSand theAcademicCatalog boast a varietyof foreign languages but in actuality onlyArabic, Italian, and Spanish are offeredduringregistration?” The truth is CLAWS says that itadditionally offers: Chinese, French,German, Japanese, Latin, Polish, andRussian. Yet, when students onCLAWSclicktoenrollinaforeignlanguagecourse, otherthanArabic,Italian,orSpanish, theyare barred from taking that class. WhywouldCLAWSlistlanguagesthattheschoolobviouslydoesnotteach? According toDr.Olga Vilella, thechairoftheEnglishandForeignLanguagesDepartment, “Foreign languages are onlyoffered due to students’ interests in aparticular language. Students have onlyexpressed interest inArabic, Italian, andSpanishoverthepastfewsemesters.Otherforeign language courses are placed onCLAWSduetocredittransfersfromothercollegesanduniversities.” However, many SXU students haveindicated amongst themselves that they

After 10 Years, it’s tie to unite

Let this World Trade Center Memorial serve as a rallying point for unity among all Americans.photo: sxc.hu

“The baseball nation--much like the rest of the United States--came to an abrupt halt for what seemed like weeks. From that day forward, there’s been an unmistakable bond, not only among our athletes, but our country as a whole. As the tenth anniversary of September 11th approaches, I’ll be thinking only of that day and all the innocent lives that were lost. They are never forgotten. God rest their souls.”-VinnieHughes,The Xavierite

“Loved ones of those who perished on that horrible morning ten years ago still feel their loss every day. As we move forward with our day-to-day lives, let us keep all those affected close to our hearts and forever in our minds. Perhaps as we question how such a tragedy could occur, we could find it within ourselves to let our anger and hate slip away--holding a grudge solves nothing and only leads to further pain and suffering. ” -GenevieveBonadonna,The Xavierite

When I found out what happened, my first remark was, ‘I think the U.S. might need to change its foreign policies.’ My classes that day were not cancelled but I remember one of the girls in my class who could not stop crying. I was definitely shaken up by the end of the day.” -ProfessorForrestPerry,faculty
