Syd Stamper - Secretary/Treasurer, Bill Muir - Member of

the Year, Hayden Kent - Unit President

I’m hoping everyone had a safe and enjoyable

summer. I’d like to start off by thanking the Over 55

and Retired Club for taking care of our flowers this

year; they look awesome! On behalf of the Unit

Executive, I’d also like to thank Bill Muir for looking

after the cost of the removal of the old shrubs at the

property we own next to our building and the planting

of the sod. This has certainly cleaned up the look of

our property!

I would like to thank the

Royal Canadian Legion #1

for donating the plaque that

we are proudly displaying

in the main lounge.

Back in July we celebrated our 68th Anniversary,

along with our Ladies Auxiliary. I would like to

personally thank the Ladies for their donation to the

Unit. We had a very good turn out from our members

and I thank you for your support! At the Anniversary

celebration, Dominion Command Vice President Ron

Smith presented Comrade Gord Criggar with the

Award of Merit, which is the highest award our

association recognizes. Gord, on behalf of our Unit

Executive and our members, we congratulate you;

you are most deserving of it! I would also like to

congratulate Bill Muir on his achievement of Member

of the Year, Duncan Manson being recognized as

Sports Person of the Year and Doug and Margaret

Rixen, along with Gord Ayotte, and Terry

Abrahamson on their Certificates of Appreciation

with Medal. Also to Diane Magrel for her Certificate

of Appreciation. Finally, I’d like to congratulate all

members who were awarded Long Service Pins.

Also in July we held our 55 and Retired Golf

Tournament, along with a BBQ and reception held

back at the Unit. I enjoyed being a part of this day

and was impressed with the turnout; a fun day was

had by all!

Unfortunately comrades, I was unable to attend the

annual Can-Am tournament in Grand Forks the

weekend of August 22nd. As you know, I always

enjoy this event but as many of you know, my

granddaughter has been receiving treatment and that

was a particularly difficult time for my family. I am

pleased to let you know that she is starting to show

signs of improved recovery and we are hopeful that

things will continue on the right track. I heard

through the grapevine that despite my absence, a

great time was had by all and I look forward to seeing

our American friends in June 2015 and then joining

everyone there next August. I’d like to personally

thank my First Vice President, Sheldon Clupp, for

attending and bringing greetings on my behalf.

I’d like to thank all those members who have signed

up to be a part of our sports program this fall. I’m

looking forward to seeing everyone back in the

Unit. A special thank you to those members who have

let their names stand for Sports Chair and Co-Chairs

and for stepping up and running the leagues.

In closing comrades, I’m looking forward, along with

your Executive, to attending our Dominion

Convention in Penticton in October. Just a reminder

that our next General Meeting will be September 18th

at 7:30 sharp! Enjoy your last few days of summer!

Hope everyone had a great summer and are looking

forward to a nice Fall. We are starting off to another

busy year with all our various activities.

The golf tournament between the Unit

and Over 55 was held on July 27th at the

Blumberg Golf Course, hosted by the

Unit, followed by a Steak BBQ at the

club. The Unit reclaimed the trophy.

At the Unit’s 68th Anniversary Party, held on July

12th, some of our members received awards for

volunteering. Member of the Year was presented to

Bill Muir. Certificate of Appreciation with Medals

were awarded to Gord Ayotte, Terry Abrahamson,

Marg Rixen, and Doug Rixen. And Certificate of

Appreciation was awarded to Diane Magrel.

Congratulations to all.

Thank you to Ed Mazur for the beautiful flower beds,

and to all who helped keep them weeded. Once again,

it is a job well done.

An afternoon of fun, games and food was enjoyed by

a group of our members who attended the

Charleswood Visitation on August 14th. Some even

took home prizes.

Thank you to our volunteers who worked the Deer

Lodge Bingo on July 23rd and to those who worked

our Meat Draw on July 25th.

The barrels that hold donations for our Craft and

Bake Sale are now in the Unit near the Nevada booth.

Please drop off any articles you want to get rid of and

non-perishable items for our Grocery Hamper Draw.

All are greatly appreciated. Sale will be held on

October 18th from 9:00am to 2:00pm.

HAVE A GREAT, SAFE,

LABOUR DAY WEEKEND

OVER 55 & RETIRED Marg Rixen

Page 5: September 2014 › archives › 8 September 2014.pdf · resume meetings and catering come September. Our time off included a lunch, attended by ten of our ladies at Assiniboine Downs.

Well, July and August are over and the ladies will

resume meetings and catering come September. Our

time off included a lunch, attended by ten of our

ladies at Assiniboine Downs. The buffet and

afternoon of small betting was great fun. Fran O’Neil

was our big winner with $46.00 on a $2.00 bet. Grey

Ponies and the Number 6 are certainly her favourites.

The rest of us either lost a little or broke even.

Some of our ladies went to cottages or just enjoyed

the deck and our city parks and visiting friends.

We did a Celebration of Life for Reg Baldwin and it

was a trip down memory lane with Reg’s family and

friends. The unveiling of Reg’s Bronze Plaque was

part of a very special afternoon for everyone.

All of our ladies will be looking forward to a nice fall

season as summer has been quite hot. Our Meat Draw

went off well on August 31st. It was well attended,

thanks to everyone. Also, thanks to Lito and his staff

for all their hard work while the ladies were

unavailable.

Our next Executive Meeting is September 9th at 7:00

pm followed by our General Meeting at 7:15 pm. We

hope to see everyone out.

Our ladies celebrate a special birthday in September

as our Doris Weber turns 90. This is a wonderful

event and we wish her many more, good health and

happiness.

Our sick and visiting is free from reports this month

which is a good thing.

To all our members who are shut-ins, we send our

good wishes and hope you all have a speedy

recovery. To our service men and women, our

thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.

Enjoy our lovely weather, drive safe and enjoy our

Unit events and camaraderie.

Sports sign-ups went well and our groups will be

starting up in September so have great seasons

everyone.

Remember all the Aims and Objectives of the ANAF

Veteran's Association.

“We Will Remember Them”

ANAVETS Assiniboia Unit #283 members & guests

are invited. I have a copy of their house rules

available. I have applied to the Manitoba Liquor and

Gaming Commission to cancel bingo on Monday,

October 13th Thanksgiving Day and Chase the Queen

Chase the Queen pot for September 2nd is $3846.00.

Queen volunteers for their assistance

selling tickets, setting up and putting

away.

LOTTERIES David Walker

LADIES AUXILIARY Elvia Furutani

Welcome back everyone! I hope that a relaxing

fun-filled summer was had by all. Here at #283 we

were happy to see regular groups of members come

through our doors each week. Thanks to my group of

trivia buffs who come in each Wednesday afternoon

for a pint and a few laughs. This has become

somewhat of a tradition for us and I know we all

look forward to it! Drop by Wednesday afternoon if

you’d like to partake in some trivia fun.

Bill and I were honoured to attend the Unit

Anniversary on July 12th. It was wonderful to see so

many members recognized for their special

contributions to the Unit. I’m quite certain there

wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Gord Criggar

accepted his award. Congratulations to all the

recipients!

WHAT’S NEW AT 283 Diane Humphrey

Page 6: September 2014 › archives › 8 September 2014.pdf · resume meetings and catering come September. Our time off included a lunch, attended by ten of our ladies at Assiniboine Downs.

1095 is the number of happy members who belong to

Unit 283. We are still trying to achieve last year’s

total. The members who have not renewed must have

forgotten. Please make the effort. We would greatly

appreciate receiving your renewal.

The Membership Committee congratulates all of the

members who received awards and long service pins

at the 68th Anniversary of the Unit. It was especially

gratifying to be in attendance and witness the highest

award, the Award of Merit, bestowed upon Comrade

Gord Crigger. This award is for distinguished and

extraordinary service in times of peace beyond the

call of duty. Gord, you truly deserve this award.

Also, congratulations to William ‘Tony’ Pelletier for

having been a member of Unit 283 for 65 years.

We hope that all members and their families enjoyed

the summer break and look forward to the fall season

and the many programs that resume in September.

MEMBERSHIP Leo Barron

Well fall must be coming, the farmers are now

harvesting, the pro is talking about closing golf

tournaments for members at the golf course, the

sports teams are starting another year of games and

as I write this we’re on our way to Grand Forks to

win our Can-Am golf trophy back from the

Americans who won it this spring at Elm Creek.

The Ways and Means portfolio is moving along

smoothly. Although our crowds have been down

over the summer, we are still making a profit.

Another sign of fall is Terry Murray has been

working on the Thanksgiving hamper baskets. The

sale of hamper tickets will start September 11th with

the draw being held October 4th. Also on October 4th

we will be having a seventh draw of all turkeys, just

in time for Thanksgiving.

Grey Cup tickets have been ordered and will be out

during the month of September.

At this time I would like to thank Barb Sadler, who

has spent a lot of time over the summer making sure

we have people to fill in for those on holidays, and

all the people who said “yes, we would be glad to

help”.

What a great club we have and remember it’s you,

the members, that make it that way.

If you would like to volunteer, please

let Barb Sadler or Terry Murray

know, and we will do our best to find

a spot best suited for your talents.

WAYS & MEANS Bill Sadler

Page 7: September 2014 › archives › 8 September 2014.pdf · resume meetings and catering come September. Our time off included a lunch, attended by ten of our ladies at Assiniboine Downs.

Hope everyone enjoyed their summer. Nice to see

more people around the Unit. Thanks for your support

of Red Friday and the Tuesday night 50/50 over the

summer.

PIPE BAND Barbie Sands

Hi everyone! The summer sure went by fast! Gale

Walker, Jimm Simon and I from our pipe band and

several others from Winnipeg travelled to Scotland

this past July with the Can-Am Pipe Band. Over the

course of three weeks we played in some beautiful

places including Dunnottar Castle, Scone Palace,

Glencoe, Eilean Donan Castle and Peterhead, just to

name a few. It was a massed pipe band with people

from all different provinces and a few from the

United States. I got to talk to several Scottish veterans

as they immediately noticed the ANAVETS crest on

my glen and bagpipe bag. A few of us on a day off

from piping went to a town called Grantown and

found the Royal British Legion Strathespey Branch

by accident while we were trying to get out of the

rain. The lady behind the bar told us that they sure

don’t have as many members as us but they draw a

crowd of hundreds on Remembrance Day. We stayed

for a beverage and bought a lot of their poppy pins

and key chains!

The Scottish people warmly welcomed us wherever

we went and enjoyed listening to our pipe band!

Pictured above is the Can-Am massed pipe band at

Scone Palace!

Our Thursday night band practices start back up in

September and we will start practicing for the Terry

Fox Run and Remembrance Day as we will be

playing at our Unit and at Riverview Care Home.

Thank you for supporting our 50/50 draws all

summer!

PUBLICITY Sheldon Clupp

Hope everyone had a great summer. I sure enjoyed

my first complete summer off in over 30 years.

The highlight for me and Joanne of course was the

celebration of marriage between our very beautiful

daughter Natasha and the handsome and always

charming Matt Grosvenor, grandson of Harry and

Jean Grosvenor. It was a gorgeous, and thankfully

very short, outdoor ceremony on a beautiful hot

sunny day at Bel Acres Golf and Country Club. They

are truly a beautiful couple and I wish them both all

the success and happiness forever.

Things around the club are about to get very busy

again with the sports starting up again and all the

meetings getting back on schedule. So I think this

would be a good time to go on a vacation. With

Dominion Convention in Penticton coming up in

early October, Joanne and I have planned a one week

holiday at Wolf Creek Resort in Eden, Utah before

the convention and another one week holiday after

the convention at Crestwood

Resort in Whitefish, Montana.

We’ll be in the mountains for

nearly a month. Should be a

very elevating experience.

So with Joanne and I gone, the

very capable Jon Miller will be

producing the October

news l e t t e r . Fo r t hos e

submitting reports for October,

please ensure that you get

them in on time and send them

to [email protected].

Congratulations to all those

who received an award at the

Unit Anniversary, all well

deserved. Sorry I was unable

to attend that night, especially

to witness Comrade Gord

Criggar receive his 'Award of

Meri t ' f rom Dominion

Command Vice President, Ron

Smith. Gord, a very special

congratulations to you.

TRI-SERVICE VETERANS R.G. Hemlow

First and foremost we would like to

welcome you all back from summer

vacation and hope you had a great

time. Well "S" is just around the

corner and you know what that means.

("S" is for September, what did you

think we meant?) This month brings

General Meetings, all sports start up again, plus the

Tuesday night meat/bake draw where we hope to see

all your smiling faces. Thanks to all who supported

us throughout the summer.

On the Friday evening of July 18th, we had the

privilege of meeting three amazing veterans, Steve,

Jason and Scott. Thank you for sharing your stories,

bringing much needed awareness to PTSD, plus

joining us and our comrades at ANAVETS. The Unit

presented them with pins and shirts and the Tri

Service presented them with our coins. A couple of

us went and walked about 5km with them where they

expressed so much thanks and appreciation to our

Unit and our association. We have kept in touch and

it has been stated that the awareness of this march

really took off after visiting us.

The Tri Service Vets volunteered to help at the

Canadian Trucking Magazine/Canadian Trucking

Show in support of Manitoba Special Olympics and

Manitoba Cancer Foundation. Then there was a trip

to Sturgis for pre-week were the scenery was

beautiful plus tassels and fun was had by all. As

always, the Tri Service Veterans Association would

like to thank you for your support.

at 10:00am. So come on out and cheer on the team

from Unit #283.

We had Sports-A-Rama on August 12th, it was great

turn out. The winner of the registration draw was

Gerry Lindal. The leagues will be starting back soon.

The weekend of August 22nd, I and a few golfers, 23,

& 11 guests went down south for Can-Am Golf with

our American friends. It was a great time. This time

the rain held off until we were off the 19th hole.

We will be getting new snooker balls for the start-up

of snooker and at that time we ask that 'NO

OUTSIDE SNOOKER BALLS COME INTO THE

CLUB' as we don’t want the snooker balls mixed up.

Remember if you like your freedom, HUG a Veteran.

LADIES SNOOKER Carol Reid

Well we are off and running for another year of fun

with the Ladies Snooker League. We have 10 teams

and are going to change our format this year. We will

be having two round-robins and one play-off round.

This should be much more fun, especially for those of

us who always seem to be at the bottom of the page.

We are going to be missing one of our most beloved

players, Gwenne Sorenson, who is now in Oakview.

We are definitely going to miss her great sense of

humour and her sometimes hilarious shots.

We would like to welcome two new players to our

league, Minna Orchard and Shannon Casey. They are

also new members at 283. We look forward to having

you with us on Thursday nights. We also welcome

back Gail Karman who was absent due to surgery.

We missed you Gail.

Our league officially starts on September 18th but we

will be holding a clinic on September 11th. A short

meeting will be held at 6:30 on the 11th with the clinic

to follow at 7:00. Our draw master, Kerry Miller, will

explain the new format to everyone and schedules

will be handed out at that time. Also, all members

who could not attend the Sports-a-Rama can register

at that time. Remember, you must have your ANAF

283 membership to play.

We will be hosting another Sadie Hawkins

Tournament. This tournament is open to any club

member and guest(s) and we can usually provide a

partner if you wish to sign up as an individual. The

date is Saturday, November 8th. The event runs from

9:30 to approximately 4:00 – depending on how

many teams we have and how good (or bad) they are.

The cost is $7.50 per person. We have prizes and we

have cake!!! Sign-up sheets will go up in the games

room at the beginning of October.

Our next meat draw is September 5th and the gals

working are Linda A., Bertha, Emily, Janice and me.

While summer has been somewhat disappointing at

times and at other times simply awesome, it is slowly

but surely going away. We hope you had a great

summer and we look forward to seeing everyone back

from holidays. Dare we hope for our

usual wonderful, warm Indian

Summer?

See you at the tables.

I can’t believe it is the end of August and moving on

to September. I trust everyone had a wonderful

summer filled with fun and good times.

We are gearing up for the curling season…BRRRR!

Oh well, so be it. There is a meeting scheduled for

September 4th at 6:00pm at 283 for all skips in the

Sunday morning curling league. If the skip cannot

make it, please send a team representative to join the

meeting. At this meeting we will discuss the date we

will start, team fees and a few other topics. I am very

excited this season as we have so far two new teams

joining the league. We need one more to make

twelve teams. So if anyone is interested in joining

our fun curling league, please let me, Judie Brown

204-294-6078 or Sheldon Clupp know and we will

gladly talk to you and your team. Please try to make

the September 4th meeting.
