Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, September 16, 10 a.m. at Margaret Duecker's home (604 Village Dr-behind Raley's)(251-7083) . Come for a meeting to discuss several issues, including 2018 officers, 2018 Program Book, Registration for the October 'UMW Celebration' in Loomis, and more. Our program will be led by Margaret D, with the subject of Mothers in Action. Lunch will be served afterwards. If you need a ride, please let Margaret L. (745-5571) know. Hearing Devices: Just a reminder for our new faces in our pews; if you need a listening device to be able to comfortably

listen to Sunday's services, please feel free to pick one up at

the back table as you enter the sanctuary. If you need a headset type or one that will work with the new hearing aids with a lanyard around the neck, please see Margaret L or Denny and we will be happy to get one for you.

It is getting closer, so be on the lookout for Operation Christmas Child Outreach notices. If you are want to participate again this year, Margaret L will be the point of contact and soon will have brochures to hand out so you can pack your shoe boxes with goodies for children around the world.

If you are at the church on Wednesday and the trash container has not been put on the street - Please put it there for us. Several times it has not been put out, and the extremely full container has not been emptied!

On World Communion Sunday, October 1, United Methodists will join Christians around the world to celebrate the global diversity of God’s children. This Special Sunday of The

United Methodist Church also gives us the opportunity to support education and empower students in need. Our gifts help provide scholarships for racial and ethnic minority students, removing the financial obstacles for young men and women for whom education is difficult, if not impossible to access. Through our connectional giving, many firstgeneration students will be able to attend college.

By now, you have heard that Bill and Bonnie King are moving to Texas. They have been regular volunteers to help Margaret Duecker and bring her to Church and home again. I can do it some of the time, but with what's going on in my life right now, I can't do it on a regular basis. Would someone else also please help with this ministry?Thank you for your consideration of this idea. - - Jeanne Hurst

Why?

I have been asking, “Why?” a lot lately.

Why is there so much conflict in politics? Why do I have to experience the aging

process? Why can’t I make everyone happy? Why is my golf game just as bad today as it was

40 years ago? Do you ever ask, “Why?” On Sunday, September 3, I will start a four-week series titled, “Why?” I hope that you will have ‘perfect attendance’ for these four weeks and that you will invite your relatives, neighbors and friends to join you as I share what the Bible says about these questions:

Why do innocent people suffer? Why do my prayers go unanswered? Why can’t I see God’s will for my life? Why does God’s love prevail?

On this

Sunday, September 3, we will also celebrate holy communion in worship and at 11:30am we will have a brief Church Conference for the purpose of electing a Nominating Committee that will work with

me over the next month to propose officers for 2018.

See you in church! Norm

When Pastor Norm gets a little depressed Linda says, “Isn’t there someone you can go visit?” because she knows that it boosts my spirit to do so. I love pastoral visitation but I do not just drop in and I cannot know whether you want me to visit unless you tell me. The visit can be in my office, a coffee shop or your home. O, yes, he doesn’t need a cookie!

While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a shoe box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased. The

minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.'

Out and About with Pastor Norm4

Bill and Bonnie King have shared the difficult news for all of us that they will be moving to Texas to be close to their family. They will be missed. - - - Dianne Trotter got out of the hospital on time to celebrate John’s birthday and their 46th wedding anniversary on Sunday August 20. Yes, they were married on John’s birthday. - - - -While Dianne was recovering Pastor Joe Carmichael and Dennis Yoder did the bulletin and media-shout. - - - - - I am enjoying getting to know Galt and I have signed up to do a ride-a-long with one of our police officers. Speaking of Galt, our church is now a member of the Chamber of Commerce and I will be attending their various events. - - - - - We have a wonderful new couple, Walt and Sue Buckmaster, who just moved here from Reno. They were recommended to our church because they were told by their Reno pastor that I was the best pastor west of the Sierras. Their Reno pastor is the best pastor east of the Sierras, I am told! - - - - - Have you met the Meehleis and McHugh families? The have been attending since July 9 when Lauren (Meehleis) and Shane McHugh attended on their honeymoon! Shane has his mother and father (Sean and Kelley) attending, his sister Kaley and her friend, and Lauren has her parents coming (Chris and Julie) here as well. Have you welcomed them? - - - - - - It is wonderful to have Ike and Margaret Luginbill back from a trip to Oklahoma and Texas. - - - - - Linda and I celebrated our 47th anniversary with a cake during the fellowship hour on August 27. - - - - - - Hasn’t the music been great thanks to all our regular and guest musicians. - - - - - - Mercedes Diego will soon be leaving us for school in Redding, CA. She will be missed!

Last month we reported some of the Church Council/ Trustees visions for future projects. The bulk of the meeting was a “Dream” discussion about projects and visions for the future of Galt UMC. Some of the

projects are easy and readily accomplished. Other projects may take more time, and money to accomplish. The Council/Trustees shared a list of projects: -

Fence between garden and neighbor property Disposal, or not, of garden property Painting social hall, kitchen, bathrooms Fixing carpet in sanctuary Removal of 2 pews at rear of social hall

Remove and disposal of white folding hanging doors (near kitchen) Repairs needed inside of church building Removal of 2 cork oaks in parking lot New air conditioning unit Memorial board to recognize individuals a n d Ceiling fans for social hall

We are pleased to announce that several of the projects have now been completed. Fence between garden and neighbor property. Removal of 2 pews at rear of social hall.

Removal of 2 cork oaks in parking lot. Memorial board to recognize individuals and gifts. Thanks to Tom Hulse. Removal of and disposal of white folding hanging doors (near kitchen).

The big project of the handicap ramp still awaits

Men’s Breakfast served biscuits and gravy at the church this month. Chef JR Stanley served up the goodies to 13 men.

Looks like Bonnie King has been doing her “decorating” thing again in the ladies rest room and a couple other places as well.

She’s even been at it in the men’s rest room.

The “Attic” story continued from last month

By 1965, it was obvious that a new building was a necessity. The side

walls of the 1927 building were

bowing out at the top and the building was held together with cables. A building committee was formed to look into a loan from the Church Expansion Division of the National Division of the UMC. On March 16, 1970, minutes of the Building Committee show the motion: “The Galt UMC to build a fellowship hall and shell of the educational hall (upstairs) and the Building Committee be given authority to proceed with securing a loan.” The loan was for $30,000 at 7 1/2 percent interest. An additional $10,000 at 1 percent interest on a 10 year deferred loan was secured from the Board of Missions. After the old building was demolished, Sunday services were held in the Woman’s Club House at 5th and E Streets. (That building was torn down and to this day remains an empty lot.) I was able to find the following photo of t h e ( t h

e n ) n e w building. You will

notice the area where the

addition of a sanctuary was to

be built in the future. The first

services in the multipurpose

room were held on Easter Sunday, 1971.The original loan of $30,000 was paid off in April, 1978. A $10,000 donation paid of the debt shortly after that. In 1978, a neighbor, Marshall Angrave, offered to donate funds for building our present sanctuary. In addition the church voted to expand the narthex and

added the church offices - our church home of today.

Galt UMC Prayer LiftSeptember 1 - 30, 2017

Jesus’ primary concern as he lived and ministered in this world, was to be obedient to His Father. He did this by living constantly and completely in His Father’s presence, by listening to His Father and speaking to Him. His relationship with His Father was the most important thing in His life. John reminds us in this epistle that “This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence.” (I John 3:9) Terry Teyki wrote this prayer of seeking His presence. Let’s make it our prayer. “Father in heaven, there are so many things to experience in life -- places, countries, cultures, foods, people, sounds. Yet, more than anything, I want to experience your presence. You are the unseen real, more real than all earthly things. Come, Lord Jesus, and let me sense the living God. Allow me to become more acutely aware of you at all times. Make me sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s residence in me. Lord, one minute in your presence is more valuable than a lifetime of success, wealth and exotic pleasures. In Jesus’ name, may I practice your presence. Amen.” (from Outside the Camp, by Terry Teyki) May you be blessed as you set your hearts on the presence of God, spending quality time with Him; listening, praying, singing, praising, glorifying Him.

Greeters please remember to get the newcomers names, address, phone # on a contact card when they enter. We do want to make further contact with them after the service. Contact cards are on the table in the Narthex and don't forget to do a name tag for them, also. Thank you.
