“Ensuring that each child and youth in Waterloo Region goes to school well nourished” September 18, 2009 How are we going to feed our children and youth? We have all asked that particular question during the past few months as the unemployment rate surged and in direct correlation, student nutrition program and need increased. I can’t tell you not to worry, but I can tell you that the Nutrition for Learning Board of Directors and staff are working hard to strategize and create action plans to increase donations and local community friend-raising support, develop fundraising support tools for schools and student nutrition programs, and create opportunities for collaborative sharing of best practices. The Sustainability Forum, September 26, 2009, is an event dedicated to a collaborative approach to learning and sharing with a special focus on financial sustainability. How are we going to feed our children and youth?

We have all asked that particular question during the past few months as the unemployment rate surged and in direct correlation, student nutrition

program and need increased.

SNACK PROGRAM PROFILE - Wilson Avenue Public School The Wilson Snack Program began in April 2009. Permission forms were sent home two weeks before the program began and asked for permission and a financial contribution from parents. The snack program was offered on Mondays and Wednesdays during the eating part of the second nutrition break but the vision is to increase the program to four days.

Parent volunteers distributed the snacks from two locations in the school and initialed beside each student’s name as he or she took their snack. The snack program ran 2 days per week for two and half months and students were asked to pay $5 (perhaps $10 in the future would be more appropriate). The desire is to keep the cost affordable yet have families contribute a reasonable amount toward the cost of food. Snack items included items such as carrots and ranch dressing for dip, apples, bananas, apple sauce tubes, fruit to go, fruit cups, yogurt tubes, cheese strings, nutrigrain bars, cereal mixes with craisins, raisins, dried fruit, etc.

Goodbye and thank you for all your help.

We would like to thank and say goodbye to Bob Cassidy and Gerry Clifford whose terms as Board Members have ended. Their support, guidance and leadership as a Board Member for Nutrition for Learning will live on for years to come.

Volunteer Sustainability & Development PartnerRBC has championed the cause of sustaining and developing our

volunteers with a goal of building sustainable initiatives that will increase the number of volunteers in 2009/2010. In addition this support will facilitate succession planning initiatives to ensure ongoing

program operations. RBC is supporting volunteer training through First Aid and Food Safety, fundraising, menu-planning and recognition programs. They are also a major sponsor of the SUSTAINABILITY FORUM in September as well as the Volunteer Recognition Breakfast in April 2010. Their support will also allow us to do advertising in local newspapers to inform the community about the services offered by Nutrition for Learning and the many varied opportunities for volunteers in Student Nutrition Programs in Waterloo Region. THANK YOU RBC for your continued support.

Friend Raising

Real Friends will volunteer, arrange for speaking engagements, they will provide in-kind gifts, and they will introduce you to others who might want to be your friend as well. They will sit on advisory panels regarding your mission and counsel you and your programs and, YES, they will donate cash.

We are not in this alone and should never be trying to service, prosper and sustain our programs alone. We are all looking for assistance and support and reaching out to new friends is a much easier and more successful way to approach sustainability and support.

Mary Corry

Mary Corry, Office Administrator, has decided toleave Nutrition for Learning to seek out her next adventure. Mary shared with all of us the following, "I have enjoyed working for Nutrition forLearning very much and am grateful for this excellent opportunity to facilitate, in one small way, nutrition programs in Waterloo Region. " Maryis going to be missed by Program Coordinators and the volunteers who workedclosely with her and the office staff will miss her engaging personality,

quick wit and willingness to help with anything. Mary had a special fondnessfor those who dedicate their time to nutrition programs. She explained, "Thestaff and volunteers of Nutrition for Learning and the nutrition programs inthe region are the best folks. I wish everyone the very best in the workthey undertake!"

We wish Mary an exhilarating walk about, ... and we'll truly miss her!

FEED THE KIDS CAMPAIGNKelly Sue Labus, Executive Director of Nutrition for Learning announces the 2009/2010 "Feed the Kids" Campaign, which will run from June 1, 2009 to February 28, 2010. There is a substantial increase in demand for Student Nutrition Programs for the 2009/2010 school year, in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Woolwich and Wilmot Townships. "We have seen a 25% increase in need, and in 2009/2010 we will be supporting over 100 programs. That represents approximately 9,500 students receiving daily nutritional support during the school year," states Labus.

This year's campaign objective is $400,000, which will ensure the delivery and support of Student Nutrition Programs in schools, churches and community centers across Waterloo Region in 2009/2010. The campaign began June 1, and the community has generously responded with approximately $43,466.25 in donations to-date.

Thank you to the RBC Foundation for donating $25,000 towards the campaign, as well as to the many other organizations and individuals, including: The Optimist Club of Lakeshore Village, RBC - Duke Street Kitchener, RBC - Jamieson Park, Cambridge, Kinsmen Club of Preston, Kinette Club of Preston, Monsignor William Gleason Elementary School - Mission Day, Elmira Maple Syrup Festival and several very special local residents.

As a way of thanking Nutrition for Learning for their efforts to make our community a better place for their employees to live and raise their families,Toyota donated $5,000 to sponsor the 2009 Nutrition for Learning “Feed the Kids Campaign”. "Toyota, a business leader in Waterloo Region, has shown time and again its generosity in supporting our community. We are very grateful for the contribution that will make a considerable difference to the children and youth throughout Waterloo Region, who rely on our programs," stated Kelly-Sue Labus, Executive Director, Nutrition for Learning.
