Commodore’s Report Ahoy OSC members and welcome back for the 2014/2015 season! It was great to see such a large showing at our kick-off meeting on Thursday Aug 21st, especially since it was still vacation time for many members. Many thanks to Ross and his family for inviting us into their home and for hosting our Potluck Dinner. The special recipe that Ross got from his grandfather and prepared for us was a perfect complement to the many dishes that our faithful members lavished on us. Ross, your home out there in the country is very beautiful and I heard more than one member suggest that it would make a perfect permanent club house. You don't think your parents would mind do you? ...... And the pool would be so great for Tom Barrett's remote-control sailing. Thanks also to our new officers for taking the time at the end of last year and prior to our first meeting to hammer out a schedule for the entire upcoming season. That calendar (with current revisions) which we reviewed at the meeting will be posted in this Newsletter. An attempt has been made to resolve as many conflicts as possible, which is why we tried to initiate it at an early date. If there are more conflicts that need our attention, please bring them up as early as possible. The objective of course is to help everyone plan ahead in this very busy life that we enjoy to live life to the fullest ... especially our precious time in the realm of sailing. We have also organized our calendar by category so it is clear to see how our sailing and socializing has been balanced. Both aspects are important in the tradition and diversity of our membership. Although we are unburdened with physical property owned by the club, we are rich in membership resources and lake access in many forms. This year, as you will note from the calendar, we have expanded our cruising events which includes sailing to restaurants on Crescent Lake and Lake Harris. We have planned our annual Harpoon Nationals and Lake Weir Invitational Regatta to return to our traditional location at the Kiwanis Club. Thanks to the efforts of Charlene Johnson, Jan and Bob Cole we have a contract securely in place for that event. Charlene Johnson, Vice Commodore, and Ken Renfro, Racing Commodore, will be instrumental in the oversight of our 2 formal regattas and our less formal racing events respectively. Our Spring and Fall Races have been fondly renamed "Rum Races" to shed favorable light on them from our not so apparent, parent auspices of our T.H.E. Admiral of OBRS. We also have dates for the "Lemon Point Sailing" gatherings so there are even more opportunities for those members without sailboats to easily jump on as crew and have more opportunities under sail. Let's get the many sailboats we have, out there! The Intra-Lake activities that occur in our region centering around Lake Weir, Lake Monroe, Lake Harris, Crescent Lake and the St John's River has been high on our list of planning also (see "2014/2015 Intra-Lake Races" on the schedule). Our participation in these racing events in the recent two years has risen from one sailboat to three sailboats: "Point Blank", "Pivot" and "For Play". And proudly, all of these sailboats have won trophies for placing in their class. There is room for more sailboats ( like John Hult's "Mayor Bombolono" hint, hint ) to turn out and anyone interested in crewing should inquire with Ed Sims who can help get you on board one of these vessels. We have planned much and we hope to keep you informed and your enthusiasm elevated through our

Newsletter, our OSC Website and our Evites. Please send articles and photos to Ross Martin, Art Twitchell and Jan Schumacher so we can try to include them on our Website and/or in our Newsletter. Speaking of photos, hope you will enjoy some of the photos included in this Newsletter covering some of our summer escapades. And I am looking forward to seeing you at our Buccaneer Night this month at Logan's Steak House and our annual Margartaville celebration at Wayne & Pat Birkenmeyer's home. Thanks for joining with us for another eventful year.

Your Commodore,

Art Twitchell

Vice Commodore’s Report

Greetings from your Commodore of Vice,

The officers have put together a great series of races and events this year – thanks to the Commodore’s leadership and to a STRONG foundation from past leaders – so you can mark your calendars well in advance for the whole year. As you’ve probably noticed, the past names of the Fall Series and the Spring Series, both of which have always been our in-club prep races for the spring Regatta, have all been changed to the Rum Race series! We are hoping that the Admiral of the Ocala Beer and Rafting Society will be much more favorable about this designation of a series incorporating the “R” word.

The Rum Race series leads up to our Spring Harpoon Regatta, our annual event which draws people from all over the eastern seaboard and as far away as Chicago and Jamaica. As the world’s only Harpoon regatta, we usually have a good number of participants, both for the Harpoon class and for the open classes. We have secured the Kiwanis club for our regatta once more. It has been completely renovated so we look forward to a classy location for a classy event.

Also leading up to the Spring Regatta will be our Annual Round-the-Lake Race. This is also open to the public and traditionally has excellent participation. EVERYONE loves to race all the way around the lake instead of short legs around buoys! This is done with a staggered start, in other words STARTED by handicap so that the once you are racing, you know exactly where you are in the race; you truly ARE beating folks (or not!!), rather than wondering whether they might have you on handicap. This too makes for a fun race day.

In the past we have had awesome racing committees and we cannot thank ALL of you for all of your support. As always, we will need volunteers again this year to help man the Committee Boat and the Chase Boats for these two Regattas. If you would like to support your club by working these boats, or

doing shore duty, please let either me or Racing Commodore Ken know. We can begin our name lists now so that later as we begin to create the job descriptions, we already know who can do what. Being a club is about the support of the racing as much as the folks who do the racing. We’ve always done well at this and we anticipate another great year of participation from all. Thank you for making this the best club in the United States . . . shucks, probably even further! J We look forward to working and playing with you this year. Let’s sail!!

From the Race Commodore

The time for sailing is upon us!

Yes, we as a club are ready to go sailing with a new Fall series: The Rum Race Series.

At a low, low fee of $5.00 per boat. All will be eligible to win a prize for your boat that enters in to the six

race series.

With the Sunday September 21st, 2014 start I would like to cook hot dogs and hamburgers at Sims’ Beach.

Just bring your own beverages.

Racing starts at 12:00 noon.

Food will be ready by 11:30 A.M.. All are welcome to eat and sail.

This is a club race with your sailing skills being tested and boat readiness being looked at.

Rum Racing is for all of us to get ready for the year coming up, so just come out and have some fun!

To be eligible for the Rum Race prize you will need to keep up with your own time for each race.

At the Margartaville Party, after some of Pat and Wayne’s hospitality, I will go over in detail about the

Rum Race Series Rules and Regulations.

Looking forward to seeing all of you soon,

Racing Commodore, Ken Renfro

P.S. We have some members looking to buy Harpoon boats.

If you know of any Harpoons or other sailboats to sell,

please list for sale in our newsletter or website.
