Industry icon Leland talks about his new launch.

44 The Colorist | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016 | thecoloristmag.com
Beauty industry veteran Leland has no shortage of career achievements
already under his belt, including hair color developmental consultant for both
Redken and Clairol; founder of the original Hair Color USA educational seminars;
recipient of a NAHA Lifetime Achievement Award; and co-founder of ARTec
Systems Group, which launched a successful color-depositing shampoo in 1989
and was sold to L’Oréal in 2002. Now, after a 12-year hiatus from the beauty
industry and four years of research and development, he’s back in the limelight
with the launch of his new company, Celeb Luxury, and two new Fashion Color
Care systems formulated to improve the appearance of hair color and prevent
color from visible washout and fading between salon visits: Gem Lites for brilliant
hair color shades and Viral for bold, fashion colors. Both lines include Colorwash,
which utilizes performance patent-pending Colorposit technology to add color
while cleansing. “Th is is not a color shampoo or color-enhancing shampoo,”
Leland explains. “In our industry we have demi-permanent, semi-permanent
and permanent color as categories. We started a new category: Colorposit.” Th e
versatile Colorwash can be used in-salon at the shampoo bowl for toning, foil
highlights, balayage, creating special eff ects or color correction. At home, it can be
used to maintain color when alternated with each system’s “clear” shampoo. Both
lines also include conditioners and a signature styling treatment.
Leland says that Gem Lites and Viral Colorwash are totally unlike color-
depositing shampoos of the past, including ARTec. “As a colorist and a chemist, I
can be a visionary with what I want to make, but I just didn’t have the technology
before,” he says. “Now, the technology has caught up. Th e proprietary Colorposit
technology is unlike any other.” Th e diff erence, he explains, is that the formulas
have a high tinctorial strength with low dosages of pigment, which means they
provide the right amount of color—from the palest blondes and richest browns to
extreme, high-fashion tones and pastels—while minimizing or eliminating staining
to the skin. “In addition, the sulfate-free surfactant provides delicate cleansing;
rich, creamy, high-lather; and intense conditioning for soft, satin hair,” Leland says.
To ensure the products’ effi cacy, Leland says
that thorough testing was a critical part of the
development process, with more than 500 people
in diff erent climates and geographies tested.
“We’ve conducted multiple statistical tests with
a third-party, independent lab to substantiate
our claims, including instrumental color testing,
strength testing, shine testing, comb testing and
repeat grooming,” he says.
With Celeb Luxury, Leland stresses that his
mission is to create innovative, superior products
that inspire and empower hairdressers to raise the
expectations of their own creativity. “For me, it’s not
just about creating a product,” he says. “It’s about
creating, dreaming and inventing what should be
that’s not and giving hairdressers and colorists the
tools to be more successful and refi ne our craft,
while at the same time, increasing our revenue.”
