Maegan Kingston – Our Rose of Tralee
At the start of this summer, I was fortunate enough to spend five wonderful days in
Portlaoise, Co. Laois Ireland with the Rose of Tralee Festival. I was fortunate enough to be
selected to represent the community of San Francisco in this event, but as a native of Oregon,
I was also proud to represent the Irish communities of the Pacific Northwest as well.
Each day of this incredible journey was filled with tours around Portlaoise and seeing
local sights such as the Killenard Golf Course, Emo House and Castle Durrow. The Roses met
the people of Laois during trips into town to visit local shops, meeting the elderly residents of
St. Vincent’s Hospital, participate in the Street Parade, and attending Mass. Each night was
filled with group social gatherings for all of the 54 Roses from around the world, including the
on-stage interviews.
These were the busiest five days of my life, and some of the most memorable. Taking
part in the Rose of Tralee has taught me what it means to be a strong female role model to the
numerous young girls who look up to you; and how to always put my best foot forward to make
sure I’m living up to those dreams. It has taught me so much about my Irish heritage and to
strive to learn more. Finally, it gave me the incredible gift of showing my family here and in
Ireland a different side of my personality and the looks of pride that I saw in their eyes will echo
in my mind for the rest of my life.
I would like to thank each and every one of the members of the All-Ireland Cultural
Society for your support and encouragement. Your well-wishes were with me every step of the
way. I am so thankful to be a part of this wonderful Irish community, and I hope to help support
future generations of Irish and Irish-Americans in their pursuit to embrace their heritage and
their dreams.
